Alternatives to Hemingway

There were several people who indicated that an alterative or two to the editing program Hemingway would be welcome. 

EditMinion: EditMinion is a robotic copy editor to help you refine your writing by finding common mistakes. (suggested by a-darker-star)

ProWritingAid: ProWritingAid is your free online writing editor and personal writing coach. Of course it checks your grammar but it does much more to help you improve your writing, including an online grammar and spelling checker; an online plagiarism checker; help finding overused words; and a check for consistency of spelling, hyphenation, and capitalization. (suggested by damaged-mind)

There’s nothing wrong with these editing programs, per se, but I hope you will always take a computer program’s opinion of your writing with a grain of salt. Like anything else, these are just tools. You can use them (or not). They can present you with data about your writing which is helpful (or not). It’s your writing; it’s up to you.

As well as these other programs, I also wanted to include some editing and critiquing blogs featuring real people who will edit your work:

Some iOS/OSX suggestions:

- IA Writer Pro (iOS/OSX), which is waaay too expensive on Mac, but more affordable on iOS. It highlights verbs, adverbs, adjectives, etc

- Marked (OSX), a Markdown preview app. Useful because you can add your own list of words/phrases to highlight, which can pick up your own overused tropes, cliches and nothing-words

- Phraseology (iPad only, AFAIK). Also lets you drag your paragraphs around, if you want to change the order of sections/parts of your story.

Personally, I use Scrivener + Marked for everything.

What’s Scrivener for? Just checked out iA writer and it is an amazing replacement for hemingway which is buggy for the online app, and somehow not recommended for the paid app.. But I don’t think iA Writer supports marked down does it..? Can’t find the option.

I don’t usually code with function as an argument. But it’s interesting to see how you can execute a function using a while loop (:

JS: Math.max and Math.min with arrays

Somehow, native Math.max and Math.min do not support arrays?! I know right, wtf. It returns NULL if you do it the normal way. The way to do it with an array is this... js Basics

1. No Global Variables! Define variables locally within functions. 

2. When using += etc, don’t need to redeclare it as a variable. just variableName += whatever assignment. 

3. In Javascript, String values are immutable, which means that they cannot be altered once created.For example, the following code:var myStr = "Bob"; myStr[0] = "J";cannot change the value of myStr to "Job", because the contents of myStrcannot be altered. Note that this doesnot mean that myStr cannot be changed, just that the individual characters of a string literalcannot be changed. The only way to change myStr would be to assign it with a new string, like this:var myStr = "Bob"; myStr = "Job"; 

Unlike strings, the entries of arrays aremutable and can be changed freely.

Example

var ourArray = [3,2,1]; ourArray[0] = 1; // equals [1,2,1]

4. Push is a function. myVariableHere.push(”my parameter here”); 

5. Parameters vs Arguments

Parameters are variables that act as placeholders for the values that are to be input to a function when it is called. When a function is defined, it is typically defined along with one or more parameters. The actual values that are input (or "passed") into a function when it is called are known asarguments.

Here is a function with two parameters,param1 and param2:

function testFun(param1, param2) {  console.log(param1, param2); }

Then we can call testFun:

testFun("Hello", "World");

We have passed two arguments,"Hello" and "World". Inside the function, param1 will equal "Hello" andparam2 will equal "World". Note that you could call testFun again with different arguments and the parameters would take on the value of the new arguments.

TLDR: when declaring variable in function = parameter, when using function = argument. argument can change values. 

6. return will exit the function. DO NOT put the return in the loop when you want it to repeat!
