Every time I spend money I feel ripped off.
I've been so busy lately doing things out and about, I've missed this. I love street community events, I love obscure transit options, I love going out of my way for my friends and interlocking lives for a few hours. I joke that I want to live on a commune or in a cult but I just want an in person community and that costs far more than I have. I want to live alongside friends but they are scattered and I'm forced to stretch myself thin between so many places. I sometimes get so caught up in the happenings elsewhere I forget where I physically am. It's odd.
I made sure to look out for a lot of the younger kids while I was in high school, I love that they still think I'm cool. The older kid at the Queer Club who smiled at them while we passed in the halls. I'm so glad they appreciate the small gestures. It wouldn't have registered to me if they forgot but they didn't and I appreciate that.
Plan for today at.. 4pm.
Clean room (nothing crazy just put stuff away for now)
One hour on each subject (two)
Then I still need to sort out my mint backups cos I have them across three drives and I want to make them nice and organized so I can actually find stuff!
After that I should watch one of the Ghibli movies I borrowed recently. Probs avoiding 'Grave of the Fireflies' for now but 'The Wind Rises' and 'Pom Poko' should be good.
āspicy pillowā jokes aside, I think @flowerkroneāās tags deserve a serious reply:
#my old phone looks like this on my shelf lmao #im too scared to touch it to throw it away #idk what trash this even goes into when its at this point
The pillow-shaped object here used to be the phoneās battery. Itās not a battery anymore. Now itās a balloon full of corrosive, pyrophoric chemicals and hydrogen gas and itās one puncture away from burning your house down. I am 100% serious. You should be scared to touch it.
But you gotta touch it, because you gotta get it out of your house before the pressure builds up to the point where the balloon pops. This isnāt going to happen soon ā there is no need to panic ā but it will happen eventually.
And, indeed, it doesnāt go in the ordinary trash. You put this in the ordinary trash and youāre gonna set the garbage truck on fire. Donāt do that to the garbage collectors, their job is hard enough already.
The first thing you need to do is get a fireproof container. The most common household item that qualifies as a fireproof container is a cast-iron cookpot with a cast-iron lid ā often sold as a āDutch oven.ā Any other cooking container thatās unreactive, has a very high melting point, and has a lid made of the same materials will also work: enameled or stainless steel, Pyrex with glass lid, etc.
However: Do not use a pot with a PTFE-based non-stick coating. If the battery does explode, the fire will probably be hot enough to degrade a PTFE coating, producing toxic smoke. (Not that you should breathe the smoke from the battery fire either, but PTFE breakdown products are worse.) Do not use a pot made of aluminium or copper. The fire might even get hot enough to melt those.
Whatever container you use, you might have to throw away along with the phone, so donāt use your good Dutch oven for this. Go to a thrift store and buy a cheap one.
Once you have the fireproof container:
Gently pick up the phone and put it in the fireproof container. If possible, gently tape the phone to the bottom of the container to prevent it from bouncing around. Donāt put any padding in there, thatāll just make a fire worse if it does happen. Put the lid on and tape it shut.
Put a label on the container, something like āDEFECTIVE LI-ION BATTERY ā FIRE HAZARDā.
It is now reasonably safe to move the container around. However, if the battery does explode, the container is very likely to leak smoke and get hot, so keep it in a well-ventilated area and away from things that will be damaged by heat. Donāt leave it exposed to the weather, either.
You need toĀ find either a hazardous waste disposal site, or an e-waste recycler that will accept defective Li-ion batteries. I canāt help with that because I have no idea where you live.
However, your local fire department, if you have one, will probably be happy to help. Call their non-emergency number. Nothing is on fire yet, so this isnāt an emergency, but things that can easily start a fire are still within the fire departmentās responsibilities. Tell them you have a phone with a bulging lithium-ion battery, you put it in a fireproof container, and you want to know how to dispose of it safely.
If the fire department tries to tell you this isnāt dangerous or itās okay to throw it out in the regular trash (with or without fireproof container), hang up on them and write a cranky letter to your local government representatives, then keep looking for a proper disposal site.
When you do find a a hazardous waste disposal site or an e-waste recycler, call them and make sure they will take defective Li-ion batteries, before showing up. Thatās also a good time to ask if they will let you have the fireproof container back.

Reblogging because I would have had absolutely no idea what to do, either.
Anyone else remember the years when everyone started getting foleather couches and when they would disintegrate people would put tape on them that would peel them even more and it would just be an endless cycle and it left couches with sticky parts on the arms and almost rubber parts where people sat. Y2K core!
Sticky TV remotes when the plastic had a coating on! They would attract so much lint.

Oh, to have that program work you need to download this other one, we are going to show it on screen for three seconds, three, two, one, now go and look up that string of eight or more letters that doesn't make an instantly readable word in one of several locations and download it. Easy. :)
Thatās Louis Rossman, a repair technician and YouTuber, who went viral recently for railing against Apple. Apple purposely charges a lot for repairs and you either have to pay up or buy a new device. Thatās because Apple withholds necessary tools and information from outside repair shops. And to think, we were just so close to change.

Have an iPhone and are in need of repairs
Have a friend with that problem
Hate Apple and are more than happy to spite them in some way
No one will know which is it
This guy inspired me to repair my own macbook. First of all, you should know that I am not⦠like, I have to look up HOW to look up what my computer specifications are. Tech, that ware either soft or hard, is not a subject in which I experience comfort or competence. But my puppy peed on my keyboard, and I asked the apple store, or the fucking mac cafe, or the godsdamn Computer House Chill Zone or whatever cute ass name they have for their bullshit store, and they said it would be TWELVE HUNDRED DOLLARS TO REPLACE MY KEYBOARD. Iām not even exaggerating.
So I asked the internet, well how hard IS it to repair? And I saw this guyās video, and while I am no techie, I AM fueled by spite, so I was allĀ āoh, they do that shit on purpose specifically so they can charge me $1200 bucks or make me buy a new computer hunh? FUCK THEMā and I bought all the tools I needed for about $25 and I bought all the parts I needed for about another $25 and I watched a few tutorial videos, and I replaced my own keyboard.
So, once you are doing the actual deed, it becomes pretty obvious that they are finding creative ways to make this much harder than it has to be on purpose. On thing that stood out to me is, instead of all the tiny screws being the same size, there are about two dozen very slightly different sizes. They could easily be all the same size, or like, two sizes at most, but no.
These mother fuckers will take a panel that screws into place and theyāll use a different size screw for each corner. They are so close that you almost cannot tell them apart visually, but they each will only screw into the matching corner. Like, itās a pretty clear āfuck youā to anyone trying to do repairs.
anyway, this guy is also fueled by spite, and doing holy work, and I have mad respect
This is awesome. Man is doing good ass deeds 24/7 because heās giving people control.
How dare you not leave a link to his channel, this guy is the savior of the modern world.

Fuck Apple, Fuck every big tech company
iFixit is a global community of people helping each other repair things. Let's fix the world, one device at a time. Troubleshoot with expert
And if you need the āproprietaryā tools; go here!
I Fixit is actually how I repaired my dadās old iphone 12 and then claimed it as my own!
ifixit also makes kits and instruction for nearly every part for consoles, computers, phones, tablets, just about anything. Weāve replaced multiple parts on our old 3Dses at this point. Itās not nearly as hard as you might assume and very worth it to learn how to repair your own electronics.
Getting in on the Fuck Apple train
I don't have the bust for the dress I got. Why must standard sizing suck, can we go back to custom clothes please. I want stuff that fits.
You can still get custom clothes. They just either cost a ridiculous amount of money, or a lot of effort at the sewing machine (as well as money for the fabric)
The easiest thing to do is get off the rack clothes that are a bit large and get them tailored. That said, Iām still considering learning how to make clothes, because I want to make a pair of non stretch jeans that actually fit. Stretch jeans just donāt last as long.
Highly recommend learning clothes making there is something amazing about "where did you get that?" "Oh, I made it myself."
Iconic.
I feel ya on the stretch elastics is something so many places cheep out on so everything just dies so fast.

Good point, my fabric stash needs using up. I over brought for a cosplay recently, thank goodness it's mostly cotton so should be versatile. Where I live there are only a few places that make or alter clothes and that's the plan for the dress but I'm just going to do it at home because, dress was in USD it took a lot out of me.
