The Sandman Love Interest Headcanon
Imagine, if you will... an unexpected Sandman love interest
There’s a maid who works for Roderick Burgess
She accidentally finds Dream’s prison in the basement and is hauled away by the security
Curiosity got the better of her, so she sneaks into the basement and visits with Dream every day, careful not to get caught
The maid tells Dream about her day and the goings ons in the world while trying to get him to converse in return
Dream never says a word, but always listens intently
Her visits become the highlight of his day - every day
The maid confesses to Dream that if she were in his situation, she would hate humans because they’re selfish and destructive
She sympathizes for him and wants to help him
Dream begins to care for her deeply and is moved by her willingness to help him
When she finally attempts to aid him in an escape, Roderick Burgess catches her and confesses that he knew about her daily visits
He allowed the visitations to continue so that Dream would become attached and he would have leverage to persuade Dream to do his bidding
Roderick threatens that for each day that goes by that Dream does not provide him with wealth, immortality, or an audience with Death, he would tear the woman apart, piece by piece
In an attempt to harm her, the maid struggles and Roderick smacks his head on the glass, resulting in his death
Alex comes to his father's aid and doesn't know how to handle the situation
In fear that Dream would enact vengeance upon him, he comes up with a compromise
Instead of releasing Dream, he builds a larger cage - a makeshift bedroom
Alex renders the maid unconscious and carefully manages to place her in the cage as well
Alex feels that he's done Dream a service by providing him with company and hopes that Dream will forgive him for murdering his raven and failing to release him
The former maid is distressed when she wakes and discovers her fate
She's terrified of Dream because she thinks that he will take his resentment of humans out on her
But it turns out to be the opposite. He seems indifferent at first, trying to keep his emotions in check in fear that Alex will become like his father and threaten to harm her
When she realizes that he means her no harm, she relaxes, but doesn't know how to cope with her new living situation
Over time, they grow closer and eventually Dream even speaks to her
They fall in love and plot an escape
Madness ensues
And also sex (Maybe? He might be asexual? But if he wasn't, yes)
The end.
(This is the first headcanon I've ever done - I hope I didn't overdo it)
