We're back. The True Final Ascent begins.
We have master hand and crazy hand at home Master Hand and crazy hand at home:
Making a quick trip to the cafe to stock up on green tea, because...
Flowery’s here. I presume we’re about to have our final battle with him.
“Kris… Susie… Ralsei… So you finally made it. The Fountain’s just a step away now. Come here.”
“Fate should say we are destined to fight… But… I believe in you three. I believe you have the power to change that fate. So… will you use it? Or will you prove your fantasy stronger than ours?”
He’s right, of course. Kris, Susie, and Ralsei have the power to change fate. But as usual, he’s saying it for entirely self-serving ends.
“So you made up your minds… Listen. Since the beginning, we were love… Your father grew us, a rainbow bouquet of seven flowers… as a proposal to your mother.”
Nothing we couldn’t already infer. Why else would Asgore care so dearly about these specific flowers above all the others he’s grown? And of course it’s ironic. He pushes aside these flowers, symbols of his love for Toriel, in a desperate attempt to get her, and everything else he once had, back.
“Flowers, that were only supposed to live for one smiling day… And yet, he did not let us go. He kept us alive, alongside his love… Every day, he watered us. He talked to us. He sang his dreams to us. And each day, we wished we could do something in return. His friend grew sick, and we could do nothing. His money ran out, and we could do nothing. His family left him, and we could do nothing. And yet he still cared for us…! Weak, useless flowers… flowers that could do nothing in return! But now… our time has come! For flowers to be the heroes! And build a world… where all his kindness can be repaid!”
Again, nothing we couldn’t already infer. The flowers were motivated by Asgore’s kindness, by wanting to repay him for the years and years he cared for them.
“Kris! This is your final chance! If you really believe your world is better… Then stand against us!”
Ghostly figures of all the enemies…?
“My RECRUITs! Lend me your power!”
OH SHIT HE’S GOING FULL ANIME ON US HE BETTER NOT BUST OUT ANOTHER ANIME CUTSCENE LIKE HIS INTRO
WAIT THERE'S LYRICS ALSO RALSEI IS FUCKING PISSED
YOUR BEST FRIEND I HEARD THAT
The Absolute God Of Hyperdeath reference… Also a very Homestuckcore way of talking about Hope. Hope making an illusion real. The illusion becomes less fake the more you believe in it.
I don’t think I like this SOUL mode. If you dash too late you don’t have time to charge up one for the next time you need it. Also Ralsei’s downed sprite I noticed in the Pink fight. And this flavour text goes hard.
“Flowery holds onto his dream.”
YOU CAN’T SAY THAT FLOWER MAN YOU’RE NOT ALLOWED(Also the lyrics would seem to indicate that Flowery was the Flower Man mentioned in the prophecy… I guess the real asylum was trying to get Asgore Dreemurr to deviate from his mission…)
HEY YOU’RE NOT ALLOWED TO ACT ON US
Also Seth and Aqua are here!
“Flowery shows Aqua how to safely hold a knife” YOU MEAN SHE DIDN’T KNOW BEFORE NOW!?
“Flowery shows Seth how to be more confident!” That’s slightly less concerning.
“Flowery looks on at Aqua and Seth proudly!”
“Orange rides on Flowery’s fist as they punch together!” That’s an incredibly cool mental image.
Yeah I get the way it plays out next it’s gonna be Blue and Yellow and they’re both gonna get cute interactions with Flowery in the flavour text before he looks on at them proudly.
I HATE THIS SOUL MODE AND THESE ATTACK PATTERNS WHY ARE YOU PUTTING AN ATTACK I CAN’T DASH THROUGH DIRECTLY AT THE END OF THE ONES I CAN YOU CANNOT JUST THROW THOSE AT PEOPLE THEIR FIRST TIME WITH A NEW MECHANIC
First death and... we're not dead?
PERISH YOU STUPID FLOWER. Between this line and those stupid attack patterns with the orange SOUL mode all my earlier dislike of this fuck is back.
Can you believe I didn’t trust them when they gave us food in their and Orange’s area?
Lmao. Valid question given that he must know that they were pulling punches against the Knight. Unfortunately I simply have a skill issue and also the attack patterns are bullshit ESPECIALLY FOR A BRAND-NEW MECHANIC that nothing of the sort has appeared in UTDR before.
Round two, asshole. You’re not catching me off guard with that bullshit SOUL mode this time.
Well duh, Ralsei. Everyone knows this. Not sure what you're trying to achieve here.
Oh wait nevermind he’s trying to convince Yellow to stop fighting to spare him and Blue.
Unfortunately, Flowery has a counterargument, and it looks like we’re now down a healer.
Flowery knows Kris has changed. He doesn’t know what their plans are, though. He doesn’t know they’re involved with the Knight.
SUSIE HAS AN IDEA BUT KRIS IS DOWN FUUUUCK
ANNNND I COMPLETELY FUMBLED RIGHT WHEN I THOUGHT I WAS STARTING TO GET THE HANG OF THE SOUL MODE ENOUGH FOR THE FIGHT TO NOT BE TOTAL BULLSHIT.
Oh well. At least Ralsei’s back.
“This isn’t a school for weaklings. Kris, you can train in an other life. …this one’s already over.”
Too late for that Ralsei, he already said it. But we ARE going to make him pay for it. If attempt three goes south we’re resorting to beating the shit out of him. He deserves it.
Actually nevermind because we’re back to Susie’s idea. Last attempt was NOT a fluke.
…Of course her idea was to distract Flowery with the ol’ “Look over there” ruse and then fucking throw Kris. Never change, Susie.
HE’S ANIME POWERING UP WITH THE OTHER SIX FLOWERS
Apparently, he hesitated. Which, with how close to the ledge Kris is… Yeah, we wouldn’t have beaten him without his hesitation.
“It’s not right!! We have to defeat you!!! We have to!!! Get up!!!”
Asgore is here. Despite his earlier attitude, I don’t think he’ll take kindly to Flowery having beaten his child unconscious three times over.
“Wh… What are you DOING!?” “A-Asgore!? Asgore, I…”
And to absolutely nobody’s surprise, Asgore IMMEDIATELY runs over to Kris to make sure they’re okay. I presume that seeing this will make Flowery realize the errors of his ways in trying to replace Kris and the rest of Asgore’s family.
“...Flowery, didn’t you say they went home…” “I… I thought… if they wanted to prove…” “How could I have let this happen… I was so obsessed with finding out about the Dark World… that I didn’t make sure you were…”
Thank you for the healing and the perfect line, Blue.
Kris is sitting back up and Asgore is predictably relieved
“Kris, Kris! Thank goodness you’re okay!”
Oh? The sun just set. And everything else faded away. That’s not ominous at all.
“I think… I owe you an apology. Not just you, but… everyone, as well.”
Is this just about his behavior today, or is this epiphany induced by seeing his obsession get his child directly hurt bigger than that?
Oop. Black screen except for the dialogue and Asgore’s motif playing again.
“Kris. …ever since that horrible day… I’ve… only blamed myself for what happened.”
YOU CAN’T HIDE THAT BIT OF BLACK KNIFE FROM ME.
IT ALL WENT RED WITH THE SAME SOUND EFFECT AS EQUIPPING THE THORN RING IN CHAPTER 4
Was to prove it wasn’t my fault.”
Okay fading back to the regular black screen but WHAT THE FUCK WAS THAT ABOUT.
“To make sure it would never happen again. That it was all because of… ”
A dark fountain just appeared.
Asgore silhouette in yellow at the base of the fountain.
“But now that I’m finally here… It makes me realize
How pointless that all was.”
The fountain’s gone, and now a little cyan Kris silhouette is beside Asgore.
“None of you ever blamed me.”
Asriel, in green, next to Kris. I presume Toriel is next, and Carol, Rudy, and Noelle will also pop up?
“None of you ever said it was my fault.”
Yep. There’s Toriel, in purple.
“Even so… seeing the aftermath of my failure…”
Nevermind. Papers, papers everywhere.
“Made my self-hatred consume me”
And isn’t that just how it always goes with Asgore Dreemurr? No matter what world it is, tragedy will find its way to him, shattering his family, and his grief-driven reaction will only shatter it further, leaving him alone to stew in self-hatred for years on end.
The Papers all connect to the Asgore silhouette with red strings with C4 thorn ring equip sounds.
“One that ultimately drove your mother away. I thought if I could just prove it… prove I was right. It would fix everything.
Toriel is gone, unsurprisingly. Asriel and Kris will most likely follow.
“But even when I finally found that “proof” I wanted… …I still failed to protect you.”
We’re back to the regular overworld cutscenes and the music is done. That was intense.
"When Asriel comes home… … I would love to see the both of you together. Even… without your mother, if she prefers.”
Is he… doing it? Is he letting go of Toriel, to salvage his relationship with his children?
“...and, Kris? I’m immensely proud of you.”
“It seems that while I wasn’t looking… You’ve become courageous… wise…”
Susie and Ralsei are here. Ralsei has his hat on. Valid, gotta check on Kris but doesn’t want Asgore to see his face.
“And made many wonderful friends. Kris… It’s your time now. End this dream… won’t you?”
Interesting that Asgore chooses to refer to the dark world as a dream, despite knowing perfectly well it isn’t. Though perhaps he meant his dream-turned-nightmare of proving his innocence.
Asgore’s walking away. Flowery is begging for his attention. And Asgore hits him with what might be the thing he least wants to hear.
“Flowery… …You do know I was just playing along, right? My only goal was to find the truth. If anything, your actions towards me… made me realize, well… how it feels to receive… such unasked-for attention.”
Flowery made Asgore realize how he made Toriel feel.
“Asgore, listen! This world, it’s perfect for you! I’ve seen how alone you are! You want to go BACK!?” “Flowery. Even if I wanted to… I couldn’t stay.” “Why?” “Back in the real world, my shop is waiting. It’s not right to leave it empty.”
And those words. Those simple words. A variation of the thing UT!Toriel, and UT!Asriel, once said, about the flowers on Chara’s grave.
Toby really is a master of dialogue, because I saw it coming and it still hit me emotionally.
And thankfully. Flowery accepts this. In his words, “If that’s what he wants… that’s what he wants.”
Cutscene’s over. And Flowery is waiting to say goodbye.
…Or not. We’re saying goodbye to ALL the flowers, it seems.
Aqua thanks us for watching her dream of playing and having fun.
Green thanks us for watching their dream of being a chef.
Yellow thanks us for watching his dream of being a cowboy.
Blue thanks us for watching his dream of feeling movement in his limbs.
Orange thanks us for watching her dream of having courage and fighting to protect what she loved.
Seth thanks us for watching their dream of learning as much as they could, even if they couldn’t be as much of a genius as they wanted.
“Flowers have dreams too. The darkness lets us fantasize a higher form of consciousness. But dreams are… dreams. It’s time this capricious reverie came to an end. Kris… the fountain is waiting for you. This dream was always set to end. Even if we defeated you… We knew that flowers, left in darkness, will perish. But, if we could give Asgore a glimpse of a perfect world… … it would make up for everything he had done for us. After all, we weren’t supposed to live for more than a single day…”
Despite everything, I don’t hate Flowery. I certainly dislike him, he’s an asshole, but he’s an excellent character and he means well. Yet maybe the opposite of “I miss Tenna” was, “I don’t forgive Flowery. But I understand him, and I’ll still miss him, in a way.”
…We’re at the Fountain. I don’t trust this. Not for a second. Kris may have opened this fountain, but they didn’t do it on a whim. It’s something they planned with the Knight, and last time there was a clear strategic reason for why Kris was the one to open the fountain. Even if the Knight is late again, I don’t buy that they aren’t on their way, and this is its last chance to show up.
Asgore is going to keep taking care of the flowers for his own sake.
He wants to reassure Kris that the two of them can tell Carol everything they saw, so that she can do anything she can to help. “The more people who are safe from this, the better.” And he can’t say enough how sorry he is. “But… you’ve grown up a lot, haven’t you? When your brother finally comes home… I can’t wait to see how proud he’ll be of you.”
He is NOT fooled by Ralsei’s hat. But he’s also not fooled by his resemblance to Asriel. Maybe before, before he let go of his obsession, he would have been, but regardless, now he’s perfectly capable of recognizing that… “The longer you look, the harder it is to tell if they’re a monster at all.” And regardless, Kris accepts Ralsei. Asgore hopes Ralsei realizes that he doesn’t need to hide himself. Which is sweet, even if he doesn’t realize Ralsei already has realized that.
He and Toriel worried that Asriel would end up Kris’ only friend. But they’ve met someone wonderful. Someone who would fight by their side through danger… but also has an interest in flowers. Susie is welcome to come to Asgore’s shop anytime, and he’ll give her a free snapdragon. Because of course that would be the flower he’d give her.
I reiterate. I don’t trust this. I don’t fucking trust this is the ending at all. But there’s nothing else to do, no more stalling to be done.
It occurs to me… this is the first time Ralsei has been in the room for the fountain sealing. But no matter.
“(It was as if your very SOUL was glowing.)”
Annnnnnnd goddamn it I was right. This isn’t over. We cut this here.
Also Ralsei’s hat is gone again.
