Last year, I befriended a Catholic seminarian. We've gotten to be pretty decent friends. Seeing as he was staying in town for the summer and I wasn't, I entrusted him with caring for my plant.
He did a wonderful job, but as he was returning my plant to my custody, he explained "I watered her every other day, I gave her new dirt, moved her into the sunshine, prayed the rosary-"
"What?"
He looked at me, confused. "Isn't she a plant you pray with?"
"No," I said slowly. "She's a prayer plant. That's the... colloquial name of the plant."
Upon seeing his stricken face, I realized something went wrong. Turns out, this entire time, he's been including my plant in on his prayers and leaving her near icons.
Listen, totally cool. My plant becoming Catholic is a great deal for her not dying over the summer. But now I must navigate this interfaith household. Keep me in your thoughts.

It seems like Edgar Wright and Simon Pegg have started working on their next movie together and Iâm so back on my bullshit with these guys.
First Edgar and Simon both posted this to their separate instagram accounts.
Then Simon posted this a few months later. If you donât know the song he attached to it, look it up. Itâs very clear Simon chose it intentionally.
Thereâs no way to predict what itâs going to be about but Iâve heard whispers that it might lean more towards drama than their other works so I wouldnât be surprised if it deals with mental health.
Both Simon and Nick have been very open about struggling with depression and trying to slowly kill themselves, Simon with alcohol and Nick with food, due to feeling isolated (Simonâs depression is more of a hormonal disorder while Nicksâs is a reaction to trauma and PTSD) which was why Gary was a depressed and suicidal alcoholic in The Worldâs End.
Theyâve also been very open about their queerplatonic relationship thatâs far deeper and more physical than a regular friendship.
By now most people know about them sharing a one-person bed for nine months out of necessity when they were young and occasionally sleep and cuddle in the same bed for comfort even to this day, but also when Nickâs mom died he collapsed on the floor of his hotel room crying and screaming for Simon who rushed in to hold him and it didnât even occur to them that Nick was naked the whole time until afterwards.
But also having to acknowledge that while theyâre each otherâs biggest comfort they havenât always been the best for each other when it came to coping with their mental health. They had to get better separately to be happy and healthy together later.
Simon especially has talked about how being part of the Mission Impossible franchise saved him because it surrounded him with people who knew how to help him overcome his alcohol addiction.
Seeing how both Simon and Nick likes to play roles that are adjacent to their own situations and Edgar very much encourages them to normalize talking about mental health as well as be ambassadors for non-sexual male intimacy I wouldnât be surprised if they lean into that considering the post Simon made. Everything around that is a complete mystery tho.

But did you know that "-er" is a masculine suffix, for which "-ster" as in "sister" is the feminine equivalent? Baker means a man that bakes, the historical feminine equivalent is a bakster, a webster is a female weaver. Some words already have the feminine as default, youngster, teamster, mobster, but most? Trying to be a principled feminist has you saying shit like goonster

for real! Lots of other examples too, anything "patr" comes from father, "patriarch" is the obvious one, but patriot, patron, patronym all would need "matr" for mother is instead. Pope and Papacy derive from "Papa" and would be Mome/Mamacy if you want yuri catholicism (hellworld!!) it's EVERYWHERE
My favorite example, beyond the obvious ones like lord/lady, waiter/waitress, steward/stewardess, is housekeeper, which is now the more acceptable term for a maid, when maid, of course, just means "woman" and keeper is masculine, would be keepster or keepess but (to my knowledge) neither were used historically because, well, keeping wasn't something women got to do!
Likewise, waitress has fallen out of favor for host or server, which are also both gendered terms. (hostess or serving girl, respectively. Servant is also gendered, maidservant and servantess were used)
There's been a concerted push with a lot of these to phase out the feminine variants of these words and just treat the masculine variants as neutral, or find neutral alternatives like fireman -> firefighter (even though fighter is also gendered) because the feminine variants are seen as inherently lesser, which, yeah that's how women are seen.
There is a line you have to draw somewhere of "okay let's just treat this and below as gender neutral because, frankly, most words that just mean "person" mean "man" historically because women weren't (and still largely aren't) considered people, and otherwise we're going to shred the whole English language" and I get that.
BUT. I think a lot of folks draw that line at the start and insist that man/guy/dude/bro can be gender-neutral which is obvious stupid. And I think it's always worth having this investigation and questioning how we speak, it shapes how we think about worlds and people real and fictional.
Okay one last silly aside about barista, which is supposed to be gender-neutral from Italian but men got weird about it and then invented baristo so now -ista is kinda feminine? Typically it's just borrowed into English to sound Foreign (Sandinistas leading to the exonym Corbynistas)
Bucket, Captain Lieutenant are gendered masculine btw, it'd be buckette captaine and lieutenante. It's not just an issue of suffixes being "ignored"(masculinized) when borrowed from french because we write Debutante with the e. Multiple times a month I stumble into new examples, the battle never ends

Took me a minute but I finally think I can articulate why I hate the whole âThis is a psyopâ argument whenever infighting happens (besides the obvious, itâs used to silence people talking about bigotry)
Itâs the refusal to distance from the supposed feds.
Like people will reblog from someone, be informed the person is question has said horrendous shit about trans men and nonbinary people, they will scream about how all this transandrophobia and exorsexism discourse is a government psyop to divide the community and ârealâ queers donât believe those things, then continue reblogging the bigot.
Like, whether you like it or not. Youâre admitting you would rather platform what you (supposedly) believe to be a government agent wanting to tear apart the queer community from inside, then stand with trans men and nonbinary people. Same with all the queer infighting before this.
You would rather be buddies with a fed than with trans men. You would rather be buddies with a fed than with nonbinary people. You would rather be buddies with a fed than with bisexuals. You would rather be buddies with a fed than with asexuals/aromantics. You would rather be buddies with a fed than whatever identity people have decided is this yearâs punching bag.
Honestly I think people should start calling that out. If a person says some infighting is just a psyop then proceeds to reblog from people known for this shit, say theyâre friends with a fed. my main issue with "transandrophobia (within the trans community) is a psyop" is that it takes the preseure off of individual trans people and the community to actually make the trans community and trans spaces hospitable to trans men. like when i was a kid the whole deal with bigots in the lgbtq community is that you cant just say "theyre not a real gay person, we dont claim them" when a gay person is bigotted because it takes pressure off of lgbtq people to actually hold bigots in our communities accountable and not accept that sort of treatment for the most oppressed in our communities. when you see a transandrophobic lgbtq person and you say "we dont claim them" youre not actually denouncing transandrophobia and supporting trans men and transmascs, all youre doing is washing your hands of it and claiming that "real" queer/trans people arent bigotted so that you dont have to put in the work to hold the bigots in your communities and spaces accountable
in order to combat bigotry in the lgbtq community, we must first accept and understand that somebody being lgbtq does not exempt them from being bigotted, including to other lgbtq people and even people in their own communities (trans men can also be transandrophobic and its not even that uncommon). saying that they're "not one of us" or are "feds/psyops" doesnt make our communities and spaces safer and more hospitable to trans men and transmascs, they are still in our spaces isolating us from our communities and cutting off our access to social support and allyship. all people are doing when they say that is allowing the lgbtq community to not take responsibility for the transandrophobia and antitransmasculinity in our community and continuing to allow community spaces to be unsafe for trans men and transmascs. yes, real queer and trans people are transandrophobic. its not a psyop, its not (exclusively) terfs pretending to be trans to sow division, there are real queer and trans people who hate trans men and advocate for us to not be able to transition and to be detransitioned, among other (often times very violent) things, and we need to acknowledge that and act accordingly

Back in the day I worked at a certain very famous and very high caste art museum in the US as a junior curator. Part of my job was to catalog the objects in the museum database. This includes details like provenance, measurements, and a visual description of what the object looked like.
Like I said, the museum was a pretty snotty institution. Itâs got a LOT of objects itâs way famous for possessing, but nobody knew about the absolutely massive collection of Moche erotic pottery it had because the curators were totally embarrassed by this stuff.
Some examples:

They never, ever put any of this stuff on public view or published it in any catalogues but - we legit had like several hundred pieces of Moche ceramics in the âdirty potsâ category. Anyway, I was left alone to just do my job with regard to the database for several years, ok? And I figured, well, theseâre accessioned objects in the museumâs collection - better get down to bidness.Â
I catalogued every goddamn bestiality, necrophiliac, cocksucking, buttfucking, detached penis, and giant vulva drinking cup in that collection. Iâd be like,Â

I visited the museumâs online public access database a few years back and - every single description I wrote of these pieces has been totally neutered to say something like Male figural vase.Â
Long story short? Just call a dildo a fucking dildo. Itâs all gonna be ok, I swear.

Museums should have sections dedicated to artifacts like these with a warning that says âThereâs a lot of private parts in here but weâre dedicated to displaying history so we wonât censor these. Enter at your own riskâ or something. Itâs prudish to deliberately hide history because of some ding dongs.
