@missy-mistress
I am constantly thinking about this
This mild Wikipedia sentence is like the understatement of all time
Here are some crazy grasshopper mouse facts for those who are not familiar with the most badass mouse species on the planet
- They are primarily carnivorous, and their diet is made up of not only bugs but also snakes, lizards and other mice.
- They hunt like true predators, slowly stalking and creeping up on their prey before ambushing them. They will sometimes let out a screech as they attack.
- Like wolves, they howl to establish territory and have a specially developed throat to produce louder vocalizations. They will stand up on their hind legs and throw their head back to howl- a sound that can be heard from 100 meters away!
- Grasshopper mouse behavior is linked to lunar cycles and they are more active during a full moon.
- These mice have been hunting bark scorpions and evolving alongside them for so long that they’ve evolved a mutation where scorpion venom that is lethal to other animals is converted into a painkiller in the grasshopper mouse’s body.
Things in a video that make me instantly skip it the second I see it:
"Watch til the end" (unless it's for like a fundraiser)
"THIS-"
Shocked emojis or someone making an exaggerated shocked face
"You NEED to try-" / "you NEED to buy-"
the word "viral" in any capacity
"Sponsored"
Where there's no indication that the person in the video is sponsored but they suspiciously keep putting a specific product with the label front & center for the camera in multiple, long shots
People who yell everything they say to try make the content seem more exciting than it is
I have more
The video doing any kind of guilt tripping or reverse psychology shit to try get me to watch it or buy a product etc (like "scroll away. I know you won't support my music-" you're right, I won't. Bye.)
Starting the video off with ragebait specifically for engagement as a hook before switching up, especially if it's bigotry. Like something like "gay people shouldn't have jobs....... is something I WOULD say if I was an asshole!"
The poster purposely mispronouncing a word specifically so that viewers will wither A) laugh about it in the comments or B) correct them, bc the algorithm means any kind of engagement = their account is pushed into more audiences
People who do the fucking aggressive point at text or photos in the screen
Came to add more
Accounts that do book reviews or talk about literature and then self promote their book at the end of the video. I'll never read your book now because I hate sneaky advertisement or engagement tactics
Artists or book vloggers who start the video by showing you the back of the canvas or the paper side of the spine instead of just showing you the title/artwork once again, to meet the engagement timer
"I didn't expect THIS-"
aggressive finger wagging and pointing at literally everything
Ad blocking/reporting should have some sort of an "I never want to see this fucking ad again and if you fail me and show it to me again I will track down where you live and fucking kill you" option.
Earlier this week we had a mom come in to drop off a prescription for her teenaged son. And she let us know that they'd recently legally changed his name so it was different on the prescription. My pharmacist was like that's fine, we can change it, we don't need to see the court order we just need to make sure it matches the insurance for billing, etc. And she said "his name is James* now but it's in your system as Kenna." And I (other side of the pharmacy) went "Oh, good for him." And she zeroed in on me and yelled "YEAH! GOOD FOR HIM! :D"
Anyway after she left my pharmacist was like "I'm not entirely sure what's going on here." And I had to be like "Dude. He's transgender."
Today is the start of the "quiet period" before the midterm election, a longstanding legal protection for eligible voters.
Forty-four states, plus Washington, D.C., are banned from doing mass purges of voter rolls within 90 days of a federal election under the 1993 National Voter Registration Act.
There's a ban on most states systematically purging voter rolls within 90 days before Election Day. Republicans are pushing courts to reinte
With an active legal fight over the quiet period's scope playing out in the courts, election experts recommend eligible registered voters be vigilant about checking their registration status before their states' deadlines.
Find links for checking your voter registration status here:
For the 2026 elections, NPR has collected deadlines and information on how to register to vote — online, in person or by mail — in every U.S
I strongly recommend that all US folks click on the above link to the tool; it is not an article, it doesn't gather any data from you, it's just a fast way to view all the information about registration for your state.
Remember that even if you have not moved or changed your information since last voting, it's still worth checking your registration.
racist white canadians and europeans want you to believe the slave trade worked like this
it did not. it is public knowledge the slave trade worked like this
and in fighting antiblackness within canada and europe it is so so so important to acknowledge these places's participation in and benefit from the transantlantic slave trade. Slavery is not just the US's dirty past, it is a triangular industry lasting centuries that white people in the united states, canada, and europe benefitted from and continue to benefit from to this day. Slavery was good for white canadians and white europeans. They liked it. they encouraged it. they had slaves, they profited from the slave trade, and they used products grown from US slave labour in every day life. The slavery of Black people would not have been possible on the sheer scale at which it happened if it were not for active, consistent participation from europe and canada.
there's something so deeply dystopian to me how tech companies don't understand that a forced convenience is not a convenience at all. i'm sure autocorrect is helpful for many, but a function that forcibly changes my actual written words and punctuation is taking away my language. photo filters can be nice but i need to choose using them myself or else i have lost the ability to take the picture i want. i don't want a machine to draw or write for me. taking away the option for me to do things manually feels like violence!!!! all this talk of endless opportunity, why are you RESTRICTING me
Disengaging or opting out of these layers of forced AI is time consuming & frustrating. Everytime there's a system update Big Tech sneaks another layer in forcing the user to track down where - in the system - to toggle it off.

this same regular asks if we're hiring at least twice a week. the real answer is virtually always yes but none of the managers will give him the time of day because he never cleans his table up after himself. The interview really does begin the second you walk through that door...
times are tough i know but we all fantasise about running you over. you don't want to work here. we'll cook you. you'll be food. we'll sell you.
