My newest #Superstition is that i don't like calling riichi in east 1. let's wait for the pot to boil a little first before i put my food in.

Been playing a lot of mahjong in both real life and in the video game Mahjong Soul lately and the contrast is so funny. In real life it's like:

I'm having so much fun playing and making new friends 😁 I'm learning so many different styles (Hong Kong, Taiwan, Pinoy, etc.) and having such a great time connecting with my community 😊 I love mahjong so much I've even bought a wonderful book (Mahjong: House Rules from Across the Asian Diaspora by Nicole Wong) and I'm going to buy a vintage set of tiles when I find the perfect one 🥰

But in Mahjong Soul it's like:

I once won a game with 95600 points. I lost another game with -3000 points. There are cute anime character avatars. Some of them are endearing like a shiba inu man. Some are THE MOST EGREGIOUS GOONERBAIT I'VE EVER SEEN. It's a fucking gacha. What an absolutely outrageous video game.

And yet! I still highly recommend everyone learn how to play mahjong, whatever style you prefer with whoever you like; when everything falls into place and you call out your winning tile and then show off your hand, it's a truly delightful experience. Come join me in the pit 🀄️🀄️🀄️

i finally convince you to play strip mahjong. you think this is going to be the slowest strip game ever. you are so wrong. i take my first draw. tenhou daidangen suuankou. your clothes explode leaving you fully naked in an instant. you are so turned on right now.

riichi mahjong terminology is kind of hilarious because of how it's an incomprehensible mix of japanese and chinese and a little english iirc with reach/riichi and it makes trying to learn the terms insane. like even the names of players what do you mean kamicha is derived from the mandarin term 上家 and shimocha is derived from the mandarin term 下家. what. what do you mean chiitoi is based off the mandarin term 七对子. i imagine it's worse for people who know japanese but it's bad enough knowing even some mandarin and being like. okay that's only barely how that's pronounced. hashtag loanwords. hashtag fuck me i guess

Possibly interesting situation here. Insta-riichi a three tile hell wait for value or wait for pinfu upgrade to improve wait?

I'm firmly in 2nd here but calling riichi brings me within mangan tsumo distance of 3rd, etc etc. I'm not gonna learn how to calculate the exact scoring just yet I'm focusing on the basics, short story is that a direct hit ron can be half the value since they gain the same amount of points you lose. I think anyway. I'm not that good at riichi mahjong. But anyway I'm sitting on a mangan if I insta-riichi the shanpon and win on the 7s or tsumo 5s, and if I riichi the pinfu upgrade it's only a mangan with tsumo. Riichi gives me haneman potential that'll get me first, but a direct hit ron mangan with dealer bonus means I'll also get 1st.

The luck of the tiles meant that I drew an 8s next turn and called riichi, but this game I didn't win the hand and stayed 2nd. What's interesting is that establishes to me a pattern—it's not worked out most of the times that I've riichied on a dora indicator ryanmen, and I don't know whether I'm going insane or I'm onto some kind of gambling truth. Although it's not like it's statistically improbable given that ryanmen has less tiles to win on, not least because it's dora connector tiles and people might defend (but everybody loves dealing in more, including Mister Gambling...)

But there are some crazy strats that aren't that insane. Like how dora tanki waits have a surprisingly high expected value and honour hell waits too since people tend to use honours as safe tiles. We'll see how my pet theory pans out... Okay don't listen to me...

Now i'm honestly thinking whether I should've been damaten with the pinfu to hedge for a direct hit ron on 1st. Perhaps I riichi more pinfu hands than I should but there's nothing more pitiful than a cheap damaten pinfu by someone other than 1st when it's not enough ... Meaningless dama... It's like you hate value...
