âSome people just wanna watch the world burnâ
justiceinnocenceâ:
âYou can go to bed whenever you want.â Nanako said, her voice as flat as it was when they had first met what felt like a life time ago.âItâs only 6, and I want to watch cartoons until bed time.â
She seemed to have no give in her voice, like this wasnât something she was willing to negotiate on.Â
âYour room is upstairs, you can go to bed there.âÂ
âOh? Well, well, Iâm terribly sorry.â He replied sarcastically and shook his head, looking at the girl as he shrugged his shoulders. âI forgot youâre a big girl now. Though, my belief is that watching too much TV will rot your little brain, do whatever you want. It doesnât concern me.â
Her tone of voice had changed dramatically, no doubt because he was a big influence on her. Standing up, he added, âGood night, Nanako.â and left for his room where he attempted to sleep all night, but couldnât. Nightmares of Adachi betraying him haunted him and he woke up feeling like trash. He cursed himself mentally and went to the bathroom before slowly going downstairs. Had Dojima returned yet?
justiceinnocenceâ:
The coldness of Yu seemed to finally reach Nanako, and her bubbly joy simmered to nothing, as she turned her attention back to the TV. She just shakes her head, keeping back her tears, much like she did with Dojima. She didnt want to be yelled at, which she felt like Narukami might do.
âIâll eat later, Im not hungry anymore.â She said, not looking at him. âBut if youre hungry you can go out, dad probably wont come home tonight..again.â
She changed the channel again, trying to find something cheerful to watch, to boost the mood.
âIâll probably go to bed early, so make yourself comfortableâŠâ
Closing the fridgeâs door, he dismissed the fact that she looked like she was about to cry and examined the kitchen area for anything thatâs edible, but luck wasnât on his side today. Pitiful, really. How did the two of them live in this place anyway? How did he become comfortable here?
He eventually gave up and sat down at the table, fingers drumming impatiently on the table as he listened to her meek, obviously scared voice. Heâd never been this rude to her, so of course, itâs no surprise. âNo, I donât think I will. The shops donât have any more customers because of the fog, so thereâs no point in wasting my time.â
Narukami threw a quick glance at the TV and found it disappointing she was still glued to it. Sheâs lucky sheâs still a preschooler and not an adult like himself. âGood little girls like you should sleep early. Now, go. Iâd like to get some shut-eye myself soon.â

ââŠtch. As odd as it seems youâre as bad as me in talking with other people about sore spots.â He huffed and mentioned how it was precisely like that and how that work had driven her insane, without her most likely realizing that. The aftermath was this: a runaway son and remaining daughter. Gladion was sure how they both knew the pain yet were reluctant to talk about it in more detail, which he didnât complain about at all. Heâd rather try to deal with this later and get a proper job instead of sales clerk at Junes after graduation.
He mentioned how that did sound risky but he was known for not really following the rules here and didnât really have any big plans to actually stay here. The only thing he wished he to was to finish his studies here and apply for an university of his choice in somewhere else. âA ghost town wasnât in my plans at all when running away or changing schools in a whim. How on Earth are you here as well, if you claim itâs insane?â
âHmph. Iâll take that as a compliment. Iâm an introvert, thus, I never speak to people if they donât initiate a conversation first.â He stuffed a hand in his pocket and looked at the blond teenager. Admittedly, deep inside, he was a bit curious to learn more about his family situation. That is, if he was his old self and didnât fall into that manâs trap. Now he was forced to live in paranoia, but enough about that for now.
He raised a brow. He expected that question, of course. âHow? Well, letâs say Iâve taken a liking to this town than when I first got here.â Looking up at the foggy sky, he let out a sigh. âLong story short, itâs quiet here. I like it. I do have a very important reason for being here, but thatâs one of my many secrets. Nameâs Souji Narukami.â He figured he might as well introduce himself since the other looked just as stubborn as him.

âI told you not to get too close to me.â âFrom the day we met, I knew Iâd hurt you eventually.â âI wish you never had trusted me.â âI told you to leave, but you didnât. I gave you the chance!â âWe were never friends. Iâm so sorry.â âI did something terrible.â âIt was inevitable, but I regretted it every step of the way.â âIâm mainly sorry that somewhere along the way, I started to care about you.â âI guess this is a lesson in not trusting people, right?â âHow long?âŠSince the beginning.â âI wish I could just make a wish and become a better person.â âNone if it was real, but I wish it was.â âDo you think I liked hurting you?â âI hurt people. Itâs all Iâm good at.â âI did it because I had to, not because I ever wanted to.â âI -did- care about you, I just had no other choice.â âYou should have walked away when you had the chance.â âIf we had never met, it would have saved us both some grief.â âI know it hurts, but Iâm still glad we had the chance to know each other.â âHurting you was the hardest thing Iâve ever had to do.â âI didnât want it to be like this, but I had no control!â âI guess Iâve just never been a trustworthy person.â âI donât blame you. I wouldnât want to forgive me either.â âSo? Arenât you going to say something?â âIf I tell you what I did, weâll probably never see one another again.â
âWhen were you going to tell me about this?â âWhy me? Of all people, why me?â âYou planned this all from the beginning?â âI wanted so badly to think you were different.â âHow could you lead me along like that?â âNone of what we had was ever real, was it?â âSo, our friendship didnât mean anything to you?â âI would have done anything for you, but youâve ruined all of that.â âAll of the things I sacrificed for you didnât mean a thing?â âI wish I had known when we met that you were such a vile person.â âIf I could go back, I would just walk away.â âI forgive you, but Iâm not going to forget what you did.â âNo. I donât accept your apology.â âAfter all your lies, how do I know you mean it when you say youâre sorry?â âI hope you realized what you did was cruel.â âI still care about you.â âJust tell me that your feelings towards me were genuine.â âWhat on earth is worth betraying someone who loves you?â âIf you want to regain my trust, you have to earn it.â âDonât just say youâre sorry. Show me that youâre sorry.â

âDad is always busyâŠâ She comments sadly, but by then Narukami had gone upstairs. So Nanako set herself back up to watch TV. Like she always did.
She was happy her Onii-chan was back, but something about him didnt feel the same. He feltâŠcolder? He wouldnt even smile at her.
Nanako sighs softly, changing the channel to some cartoon she enjoyed, waiting for Yu to return to the downstairs. When he did, she turned and smiled at him.
âUh-huh!â She smiles widely, answering his question. âIve done all my chores! And Im getting really good grades! I bet Dad would be proud of meâŠif he knew. But heâs so busy with work againâŠBut youâre proud of me, right big bro?â
For a moment her tone wavered to that of sadness, but when she directed her question of pride at Yu, it returned to an upbeat happy tone once more.
âMy teacher says I might be in the top three of my class this year!â
Souji looked at her, tilting his head at her question as he rested on the sofa. After a long silence filled the room, he spoke, âIf youâre good, then yes, I am. Iâm sure Dojima-san would say the same.â That came out colder than he anticipated, and he would apologize if it wasnât true. Overall, he hated rowdy children.
A sigh left his lips as he turned his attention to his watch- 5 PM, in other words, dinner time. âLooks like itâs dinner time. I hope your dad bought something, otherwise... you wonât eat anything at all.â
He spoke as he got up to check for food inside the fridge-- anything that would feed him and his cousin. âHm... microwaved dinner... you eat this rubbish? Please tell me you actually have something edible in this hellhole.â Turning to gaze at her with a frown upon his lips over his shoulder, he shook his head. âIâm too tired to cook for you if thatâs what youâre thinking.â
Merry Christmas Eve
lovers-chokerâ:
Well, at the very least, he didnât have a place to go. A little sad, considering tonight was Christmas Eve, so he should have a place to come back to, right? He was buying medicine⊠Then again, he could be by himself and all.
âI was just trying to be friendly, I guess⊠It felt like the natural question.â She could be wrong, of course. He could always be just wandering, for no reason other than⊠just that. There wasnât much to do with the fog still up. âIâm headed home, but rest assured, I donât mind nor care about your reasons.â
She shrugged, seriously, because she wasnât really interested in getting to know the guy, and she was sure he felt the same way. âIâm not interesting either.â
He let out a sigh he had been holding in for a while. âOf course you were. Everyone here is kind and love gossiping about anything and anyone behind their backs.â He clicked his tongue, mainly out of habit and wondered if any of the survivors had any interesting tales besides the usual âWeâre going to dieâ attitude. Not that he cared. âThe only good thing about this town is that itâs eerily quiet, unlike my hometown.â
Her response was expected and he nodded firmly. âGlad we agree on this, then. Naturally, the people who claim that means that theyâre lying through their teeth. Weâre all interesting in one way or another. But Iâd rather do things my own way. I never was good with people as you can tell.â
justiceinnocenceâ:
Things had returned relatively back to normal for Nanako-chan. Though she was sad that her big bro had left without a word, she set herself back to doing the domestic tasks while her father worked himself into an early grave.
âHuh..we arenât expecting visitors?â Nanako hums, hearing the door bell ring. The now 9 year old was cautious, of course. But she heard her Onii-chanâs voice, and she couldnât help but throw the door open.
âBig bro!â She said excitedly, immediately throwing herself to hug Souji. âYou came back! We werenât expecting you.â
He breathed in and braced himself for the worst when Nanako jumped on him, causing him to stumble back a bit. âThanks.â He patted her head while thinking of a good excuse to explain his surprise visit. âI... like Inaba a lot more than Tokyo, so I came back.â He spoke, not a smile visible on his face as he stepped inside the house and looked around for his uncle.
âOh, your father is busy again, I see...â Good, he thought if he was here heâd ask all sorts of questions in regards to what happened last year and why any conclusive evidence couldnât be found. âIâm gonna go unpack my stuff and Iâll be back, okay?âÂ
He told her and without waiting for an answer, went up the stairs and into his room to do so. While also contemplating everything, his head was a mess. Taking out the lighter he got from his partner in crime out of his pocket, he sighed while clutching it into his hand. âDammit,â Narukami muttered under his breath and soon put it back, climbing down the stairs into the living room. âHave you been a good girl while I was gone?â
