Galaxy NGC 1277 hasn't formed stars in over 10 billion years.
The strongest-ever silicon signal that's inside of it could indicate the remains of the first stars of all.
At 240 million light-years away, galaxy NGC 1277 hasn't formed new stars in over 10 billion years. Could it contain the first stars' ashes?

ASTRONOMY PICTURE OF THE DAY May 24, 2026 at 05:00PM What are these strange space globs? Situated in rich star fields and glowing hydrogen gas, these opaque clouds of interstellar dust and gas are so large they might be able to form stars. Their home is known as IC 2944, a bright stellar nursery located about 7,600 light years away toward the constellation of the Centaur (Centaurus). The largest of these dark globules, first spotted by A. D. Thackeray in 1950 using a telescope in South Africa, is likely two separate but overlapping clouds, each more than one light-year wide. Along with other data, the featured Hubble palette image from the El Sauce Observatory in Chile, indicates that Thackeray's globules are fractured and churning as a result of intense ultraviolet radiation from young, hot stars already energizing and heating the bright emission nebula. These and similar dark globules known to be associated with other star forming regions may ultimately be dissipated by their hostile environment -- like cosmic lumps of butter in a hot frying pan. It’s Fossil Friday! Take a bite out of the weekend with Dilophosaurus wetherilli, a carnivorous dinosaur that lived some 194 million years ago during the Early Jurassic. This dino acquired its name, which means “double-crested reptile,” from the paired crests on its skull. They were possibly used for display. This specimen was found in 1942 at the Kayenta Formation in Tuba City, Arizona. You can see it in the Museum’s Hall of Saurischian Dinosaurs! To spot Dilophosaurus and other dinos, plan your visit. The Lake Placid funnel wolf spider (Sosippus placidus) is a species with an extremely limited distribution, found only in certain tracts of sandy scrubland in the vicinity of Lake Placid, Florida.
Most wolf spiders are roaming hunters or burrow dwellers that do not build any sort of web, but Sosippus build a funnel web where they ambush prey, similar to unrelated funnel weavers like Agelenopsis. Florida is home to a few other, more common species of Sosippus, but S. placidus is considerably larger than the others and has a unique black and orange underside.
The range of S. placidus is contained within the Lake Wales Ridge geological formation of central Florida, which has arid subtropical conditions unlike any other habitat east of the Mississippi. These dry, harsh scrublands are not as biodiverse as the swamps and forests covering most of Florida, but because the habitats are so unique many plants and animals have evolved here that are found nowhere else on earth.
Development, agriculture and fire suppression threatens to destroy what little remains of these scrublands, and the current political forces that control Florida (and the entire country for that matter) aren’t too keen on environmental conservation. So if you think this spider is cool I recommend making the trip to central Florida to get a good look before it’s gone forever.

E. fasciatus caterpillars are heavily polymorphic and come in several different color morphs- those stripy rainbow ones are from the same population as the green one.
another neat thing about these guys is that most caterpillars drown easily, but since water primrose (Ludwigia) usually grows in standing water, E. fasciatus caterpillars have a propensity for swimming and are often seen wriggling their way through lakes when they need to come ashore to pupate.
I haven't been able to stop tearing up about Artemis II. How beautiful is this planet, this galaxy, this whole space? How beautiful is creation? How beautiful is it to see humans gather and celebrate science/STEM? To break records for mankind in being the farthest distance from Earth recorded?
Reid Wiseman, the commander of Artemis II, lost his wife Carroll in 2020 after a 5 year long breast cancer battle. But Carroll and their two daughters encouraged Reid to continue following his dreams of being an astronaut. Today, as they went around the moon, they announced one of the brightest moon craters to be named Carroll.
“It's a bright spot on the Moon. And we would like to call it Carroll."
What a day to be alive, to be human, to be part of this creation we call life.

A 10 000 Kilometer Galactic Bridge : With this creative astro-collaboration you can follow the plane of our Milky Way Galaxy as it bridges northern and southern hemisphere skies. To construct the expansive composite nightscape, skies over Observatorio El Sauce in Chile (top) were imaged on the same date but 6 hours later than the skies over the Saint-Veran observatory in the French Alps. The 6 hour time-lag allowed Earth’s rotation to align the Milky Way above domes at the two sites. All exposures were made with similar cameras and lenses mounted on simple tripods. A faint greenish airglow is visible in the dark Chilean sky that also features the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds near the observatory dome. In the French Alps light pollution is apparent, but the distant Andromeda Galaxy can still be spotted near the horizon in the northern night. On planet Earth the two observatories are separated by about 10,000 kilometers. via NASA
