you'll get the urge as an artist or a writer to say out loud the things you're worried about "the proportions are off" "kind of out of character" "i'm not good at summaries" "didn't get as much detail as i wanted" "i made a mistake and here's how" and that's the self-conscious part of your brain telling you "it's bad and if you don't tell them you know it's bad then they'll think you're stupid" but you've got to ignore that little voice and pretend you think it's good or else that little voice is going to ruin your life
Some of the best advice I have ever gotten was from a creative writing professor. She said never apologize for your work. Never critic it before someone else does.
Her reasoning was you are the creator. You made your work from nothing and can see all the flaws and seems and holes. But your audience may not see any of it. Maybe they will; maybe they won't. But if you TELL them about the holes and the mistakes and the problems....they will 100% see them. So don't tell them. Don't sabotage yourself just because you think you're not good enough.
I loooove ominously giggling when I'm getting my friends into smth new. They ask me a spoilery question and I get to do this
Nature Documentary: these deep sea creatures can withstand crushing pressures of thousands of pounds per square inch!
Me: they’re not withstanding a goddamn thing. The pressure is a part of them. Their interiors and exteriors are equalized. Just because your respiratory system is built around a pair of fragile poppable bubbles-
is it just me or have people really stopped writing tags under art reblogs

Contemporary art haters will be like "i don't get it" and then not read the title or artist statement or the medium or the year or
How to "get it":
Ask yourself, how does this piece make you feel? (No wrong answers)
Look for an artist statement nearby. What does it say about the artist and their relationship to their work? What does the artist say that they are trying to convey with their art? What contextual clues can you pick up from what they say about their background, or what they omit?
Look at the title of the piece. What is the artist saying about their work by naming it that, either explicitly or implicitly?
Look at the medium. Is there anything about the piece that stands out to you, knowing what it's made of?
Look at the year it was made. What cultural events might have been happening around this time? Was this piece part of a particular art movement? What was the purpose of that art movement, and what was it trying to say?
Accept that sometimes, you still might not get it. This is perfectly okay.
i was just gonna comment in the tags but! i wanna talk about it! cuz this is a cool topic! and that's a really good post! there are so many ways to appreciate art!! many layers in which you can approach any work! at all !!!
you can and Should engage for a moment with a piece! actually look at it! give it some thought!
art is a two-way conversation between the dumb shit i drew and your thoughts in your head!!!!! that's the whole point !!!!!!!!!!
this is true even if the art doesn't hold any meaning on purpose by the artist! it's still very engaging to think about why we like how the colors match, or how it all fits nicely within the borders of a page! it's good and healthy to consider why we like the things we do, and why we might not.
Aw he’s just looking for love
are you his beautiful wife? you are not his beatiful wife? sad snooting
pelican ring holder/jewelry dish for my gf. first time melting broken glass down in the kiln - it very fun and turned out well!
given the current climate this pride especially i feel i must mention that i love my trans friends, i stand with trans people in the fight against transphobic legislation and those who would enforce it, and this blog is not a good place for you to be if you do not vibe with that
Gotta catch em all
awww the like button turns into a rainbow when you press it! that's so cute...hey staff what's with all the trans women you keep nuking?
i think we should be ridiculing them more for this. you don't get to try and go all "queer website" when your staff likes to go on nuking sprees targeting the trans fem users
would be remiss not to mention that the rainbow notably straight up just removed the trans flag colors from it. like they’re gone. it’s the progress flag minus the trans flag colors.
that’s not the whole flag, now is it
hey staff what the fuck
hey staff don't you think you're being too on-the-nose
HEY STAFF DONT YOU THINK YOU'RE BEING TOO ON-THE-NOSE
i know this is nitpicky, but it's the philly pride flag, which features the traditional rainbow colors plus black and brown at the top to highlight the unique struggles of queer people of color. it dates back to 2017 and was introduced as part of the city's “More Color More Pride” campaign:
In 2016, after a number of high-profile stories exposing racism in Philly’s Gayborhood, people — especially people of color — started demanding more inclusion and intersectionality in Philly’s LGBTQ community. Both individuals and groups joined the call for change, when the neighborhood — a place that’s supposed to support and welcome LGBTQ people — was shown to be causing harm. “We were not popular. It was not sexy, it was not glamorous,” says journalist Ernest Owens, who exposed much of the racism. “People forget that [the flag] was inspired by a small group of rebels and Black queer people that just really wanted to speak out against something that was impacting their lives.” (source)
it's certainly telling that they picked that one instead of something more explicitly trans-inclusive, but it's a popular design with its own significance and history. they didn't just. vandalize the progress flag, as that comment suggests. the progress flag was inspired by this design.
Off the cuff but on my end the trans flag follows the regular pride flag on the same animation. I'll try to grab a screenshot
yeah! i just saw this post. there are like 10 different animations for different pride-related tags
happy pride month 🏳️🌈
