Day at the Daycare || Heather&Avery

Upon hearing Avery’s laugh, a bright red colored Heather’s cheeks. She knew the fear was irrational but she’d really thought that she’d done a better job of hiding it from him. But who was she kidding? Her shoulders were trembling for Arceus’ sake. 

Once Torch was over by Avery, though, Heather relaxed just a bit. 

"A Masquerain? I’ve never seen one, only a few Surskits." Her eyes sparkled, meeting new pokemon was always exciting. And Kit sounded feisty from Avery’s tone.

The breeder’s proposal took her by surprise. It was a pleasant surprise, though. A slow grin graced her lips, “I’d love to meet your other pokemon! Do you mind if I bring my team along?” She asked, not wanting to leave the other three behind or they’d get jealous. 

Going with Avery promised to be interesting and educational. Heather was sure she’d learn a thing or two through the air by just being around him, but actually dealing with pokemon with him had to teach her more than a few things. Hell, maybe Heather would even be able to teach him something.

The couple had made it safely to Icirrus aboard flight Paxton. The Swellow made a better impression on the nurse than Torch. With his wings tucked in, the bird showed off his feathers and allowed Heather to take a seat comfortably on his back. Pokemon obviously lacked the proper safety, so what better support to hold her in place than a cute southern boy? Just hold on, a'ight? Avery instructed her with a reassuring grin. And by hold on, he meant for her to keep her arms wrapped snugly around his waist. Paxton was easy on the turbulence, smooth on the turns. He flew fluidly, knowing the route expertly. 

He made a soft landing on top of a hill, in front of a small cottage. It was definitely homey, definitely fit for Avery. Welcome to my home sweet home, Miss Heather. He scraped his boots across the welcome mat before opening the door. Just in case. What lied beyond the front door was always a mystery--calm or chaotic. But Avery wouldn't be embarrassed to show anyone how he allowed his Pokemon to roam the rooms and how they acted amongst one another. 

The click of the doorknob alerted Kit. The screeching of the Masquerain commenced, and a blue blur could be seen darting about. Kit, settle down. The Breeder called firmly, loud enough for her to hear. But she knew her trainer had brought a guest and her tiny body could not contain her anticipation. Her excitement. At least she wasn't invading the kitchen, knocking over bowls of berries and of medicines that were only in the experimental stage. She was always one to make a mess of things.

Abigail's hooves echoed throughout the home, clicking against the hardwood floor like tap dancing shoes. Vincent was yet to be found, a shyer Water-type that would find underneath tables and other inconvenient spots as appropriate places to take a nap.

As Avery led Heather by her hand through the tiny cottage, he held an apology on his tongue. Sorry for the mess, Miss Heather. Just tryin' some new things. 'N' I didn' expect any company, in all honesty. Measuring cups and spoons littered the counter top. Herbs and fruits laid out on cutting boards. But would the Nurse notice how there were no recipes in sight? How the bookshelf in the living room lacked what it was meant for? But those were just menial details.

The jittery Masquerain had found her target--the brunette stranger whose hand was still being absentmindedly held by the Breeder. And oh, this didn't settle well with Kit. Her screeching started again as she darted straight for Heather. The Water-Bug inspected the girl, fluttering around her head. A hummingbird to a flower. Normally, a trainer would allow their Pokemon to inspect things that piqued their curiosity, but Avery was well aware of Kit's impish intentions. Kit, settle down. He repeated, passing Heather an uneasy, apologetic smile as the Masquerain sped off somewhere else.

; Guidance || Lyra and Avery

A sunny, bright day. Days like this, Lyra loved. It’s always fun to go out and do something in her opinion. And—of course—that was her objective. Just finishing up a Pokeathalon, the girl stepped outside the large building. She didn’t win; so the girl was in a rather pouty mood. Lyra knew losing wasn’t a big deal, but nonetheless it still dampens her spirits for a little while.

Arms crossed over her chest, the girl slowly went for the exit. Walking beside her was her Ampharos. Lyra loves using it often, and it’s always funner to have a Pokemon outside of it’s Pokeball, right? It feels less lonely that way. There was no convincing her otherwise. It was cheerly walking; the moods of it and it’s trainer were obviously different. But when Lyra looked at her Pokemon, there was no fighting the smile she gave it before petting it’s head. 

Sighing as they reached the gate doors; the teen began to ponder where to head next. Ooh… Probably the National Park…!! With that, Lyra’s frustration began to ease a bit. The National Park is always a very exciting place crawling with Pokemon.

But before heading that direction, she spotted a very lost looking trainer. The brunette wondered if they needed some help. Either way, she skipped on over to them.

"Uh, hey," Lyra began, tapping on the stranger’s shoulder; gaining their attention.

She wasn’t really bashful when meeting somebody new, but the brunette didn’t want to accidentally overwhelm them. It has happened before. The teen does admit to having an over-energetic attitude. And by now, she’d completely wiped away her bad mood.

"You look kinda lost…" She continued, though it was just stating the obvious on her part. Then suddenly, her eyes widened. "Do ya’ need some help?  Ooh, I can help you if you want!"

Naturally, she’d want to help. Lyra wouldn’t pass up an opportunity to help somebody and to possibly make a new friend.

Goldenrod City, Johto, was a place Avery had never ventured, had never seen himself visiting. But it was summer now, and a customer had dialed his PokeNav inquiring about if he had those things from Johto that help with contests? The Breeder scratched his head, pausing for a moment until the young trainer progressed further with the explanation. They’re like.. acorns..wait, no Apricorns! He knew jobs requested by those in Hoenn usually consisted of PokeBlocks, but perhaps they were going out of style. He was trusted with the duty of familiarizing himself with the unique item, as well as getting a shipment to those in Hoenn as soon as possible.

But no job seemed too much for Avery. The Breeder now found himself outside a large dome, walking in circles across the tiled perimeter. The first step was done—find the Apricorns. There was a woman selling them at her booth, mixing the best ApriJuice you ever tasted! Avery had asked her about the fruits, where he could find them and if there was anyone he could talk to for more information. That’s when she shoved a map against the pocket of his overalls, instructing him to go to Azalea Town and talk to a man whose name he’s already forgotten. But for a visitor, someone who couldn’t read, those instructions weren’t clear enough.

'N' how do I get to Azalea Town, miss?

The woman rushed to fill cups with the sample of her juice blend. It’s just right down that way. Can’t you see I’m kind of busy? Goodbye now. 

Clutching the useless map, Avery let out a defeated sigh. And he began his umpteenth circle around the dome. That was, until a gentle tap on his shoulder caught his attention.

You look kinda lost…the young girl had no trouble speaking to a stranger. Especially one that was an apparent foreigner. Avery eyed her Ampharos, the condition in which she kept it. It’s positive health was evident. Ooh! I can help, if you want.

Scratching the back of his head, Avery decided this was a fateful opportunity, a chance for him to complete his mission. I’m just lookin’ for a place. Azalea Town? Ya see, I’m not from around these parts…

"I suppose the makes sense," She muses, thinking over Avery’s words. "That’s probably the sort of thing trainers want to know, huh?" Heather felt slightly daft for not thinking of it before, but she didn’t dwell on it, choosing to instead focus on Avery and the pokeball his fingers were hovering above. 

While Avery had a calming presence, that didn’t stop the knot in her stomach, Heather hadn’t given herself time to mentally prepare or anything, this was the same tension that usually irked bird pokemon. They seemed to require a firm hand and a confident trainer, her nerves simply put them off. 

Then, without warning, a light burst forth from the pokeball as the Combusken decided to make his own entrance. 

She felt herself go stiff as the pokemon wasted no time in leaning in. If Heather was thinking rationally, she would have registered the fact that Torch was simply surveying his surroundings and Heather was new, of course he’d examine her. Instead, a slight tremble moved through her shoulders and she breathed out a slow, shaky breath. 

See, he ain’t gonna hurt ya. Avery’s voice brought her back from being cornered by combusken to being in the room with a few pokemon and a very skilled breeder. “Right, of course.” She offered him a nervous smile, while he didn’t appear the type to tease her too harshly, she’d rather not give him the ammunition. 

Slowly and deliberately, Heather straightened and forced her knees not to shake as she regained full composure. He ain’t gonna hurt ya. She ran the words through her mind a few times to steady herself. On her shoulder, Flareon pershed, careful eyes on Torch. She couldn’t tell if the pokemon was reacting to her trainer’s own tension or simply to a new and so obviously dominant pokemon in the room. Either way, they both jumped when Torch squawked, a quiet squeak escaping Heather’s lips. 

"He certainly seems bold," She managed, determined not to let her shakiness show. Something about Avery made her want to not be such a wimp around a simple bird pokemon, not to mention she didn’t want that energy feeding into Flareon and making her belligerent.

Avery couldn't help laugh at the Nurse's reaction, release a chuckle from deep in his chest as Heather trembled around his Combusken. He knew how Torch was, showing off his talons and feathers yet he'd never hurt a Beautifly. It was all an act, courtesy of his given Nature.

Back home I got an Impish one. Masquerain. Kit's damn trouble-maker I'll tell ya that much. The two Pokemon never got along. He was constantly treating burns, healing wounds and wrapping bandages. Mostly on Kit. She ain't know when to quit. Perhaps the introductions of his other Pokemon would ease Heather's tension. Maybe she'd be more comfortable getting to know the rest of the crew. 

Ya could always come back to my place 'n' meet the gang. Find Flareon a friend or two. Avery didn't mean to be so abrupt, only polite and transparent. No negative intentions lied beneath his proposal. The subject was Pokemon, becoming familiar with their individual personalities. It would give the trainers a chance to bond as well, perhaps share tips and tricks over coffee or tea. Platonic.

There was a glimmer in Avery's honey eyes when he looked at Heather, admired the bond between her and her Fire-type. Whadaya say?

Berry Season // Avery & Reagan

When it came to the tree trunks, Reagan chose not to risk it. Simply put, he called forth his Inkay and had it use its psychic powers to lift him up. Reagan floated past the water and followed Avery.

Reagan floated along, listening to Avery’s words. He wrote a few notes down, mostly about natures and how he’d have to look them up later.

"Let me get this straight," Reagan said. "So if I wanted to breed my Noibat, I’d need a Pokemon that was in his Egg Group?"

"This is great. Maybe I’ll try and breed a Pokemon like you!"

From behind the trunks, there was a squeal. Rustling from above, something small climbed to the top of the shrine. It was a Shelmet, standing proudly and observing Avery with fierce eyes. “Shel.”

There was a pang of pride within Avery when Reagan juggled the possibility of breeding a Pokemon. Just. Like. Him. Had he influenced this kid somehow?

Abigail huffed at the Shelmet, at the trees before them. She turned away, showing her trainer and new acquaintance that it was better off if they did not enter the clump of trees. Her muzzle was aimed towards the sky, towards the position of the sun as it lowered onto the horizon. Evening was approaching, about to welcome the city with a blanket of warm hues. Yellow. Orange. Pink.

But the beauty came with a price. Once the sun went down, the waters became more treacherous, dangerous. The depth was a mystery, the location of Pokemon. You could step on a Shelmet. A Tympole. Wounds were inevitable when trekking through sodden, slick grass and mud under a darkened sky .

Abigail thinks we better get goin' on home.

The Breeder agreed, adjusting his grip on the bucket's handle. He turned towards the city, trailing close behind his deer. 

Ya should join us, Reagan. Don't want ya out alone at night, ya hear?

Day at the Daycare || Heather&Avery

"I’d say Flareon is stubborn, Ninetales is the vain one."  She smiled easily at the breeder. “But I didn’t know those led to better stats, just a couple of hard headed fire foxes.” The pokemon curled around her neck pawed at Heather’s face gently, a plea for attention.

Sassy nature? Someone was quick on the uptake. “How do you do that?” She asked, eyes narrowing just a bit. Not in malice, just in scrutiny as if a closer look would reveal Avery’s secrets. 

A gentle shrug. “I suppose we’re trained to spot different things.” Sure, Heather knew the natures and could identify pokemon with them, but it took time. Avery had managed it in mere minutes. 

Flareon seemed to take well to the scratches she was receiving from Avery, pushing up from Heather’s shoulders to press her head further into the breeder’s hands. Heather was impressed, to say the least. While Flareon wasn’t particularly hard to appease, he’d entirely distracted her from the eevee and won her over. 

"Combusken?" Heather’s eyes lit up. Torchic was one of her favorite starters, and there was something truly alluring about a fire and fighting type. Of course, she didn’t have the best track record with bird pokemon, but Avery seemed to know what he was doing. What’s the worst that happen?

                              Just a couple of hard-headed fire foxes...

Avery chuckled once more at the brunette. Her passion was evident, her curiosity.  Not to mention the pure soul that lied within her. She was open to learning Avery's secrets and tricks, brown eyes lighting up. 

                             How do you do that?

The Nurse wondered, but the Breeder simply shrugged. Just gets easier to tell a Pok'mon's Nature the longer you're workin' in this profession. Again, he flashed a smile at Heather. Now, another smooth southern snicker, Torch is Bold 'n' ya notice that fairly quickly. He reached for one of his PokeBalls.

As if he could feel his trainer's touch, Torch broke out, surrounded by a red light. When the beam subsided, Torch emerged in a valiant stance. He fluffed out his feathers, eyes squinting as he surveyed the room. His trainer. The Nurse that knelt before him. He could sense something was off in the way she tensed. What exactly was setting her on edge? As if searching for the answer to this question, the bird Pokemon leaned closer, tilting his head as he inspected the stranger.

See, Avery assured. He ain't gonna hurt ya.

The Combusken shifted his attention to the fellow Fire-type on its owners shoulder. His gaze tightened, wings twitching and adjusting. He was getting inquisitive, defensive. And he wanted to be the dominant one in the room. The Day-Care Center was Avery's turf, his turf. The Combusken released a low squawk before dashing back to the Breeder's side.

"Oh, if we’re talking hometowns, I’m from Snowpoint City in Sinnoh. Just living in Unova." Heather informed him with a smile. “Oldale is over between Littleroot and Petalburg, right?” She inquired, it had been years since she traveled to Hoenn but she had found the region rather charming.

Not to mention she really, really liked Torchic and all of its evolutions. But then again, she didn’t get along too well with bird pokemon, even if the pokemon was a fire type. 

It took a moment for Heather’s eyes lock onto the oddly colored Eevee. An instant grin sprang to her face.

"Is that Eevee a shiny?" She was already crouching to extend a hand to the pokemon for it to examine her. There was a special place in her heart for Eevees since that had been her first pokemon, though she was a Flareon now. 

"That’s just absolutely amazing. Did you manage to breed a shiny or are you just taking care of this cutie?" The Eevee movie to nervously examine her hand and Heather was careful to remain still as not to spook it.

As if on cue, her Flareon bounced in to perch on her should and ultimately surprising the small shiny. Heather’s hand moved to automatically scratch her Flareon behind the ears while she eyed Avery suspiciously. She curled around Heather’s neck, deciding to keep eyes on the stranger from a safer distance. 

It seemed interacting with the Eevee at the moment just wasn’t plausible, so Heather stood back up. "You have some jealousy issues," she told her Flareon fondly, chuckling softly to herself.

Did you manage to breed a shiny or are you just taking care of this cutie? A grin across his lips, Avery admired the way Heather's fingers crept gently towards the Eevee, her tender touch. She had a way with them, that was for sure. And it was refreshing for the Breeder.

These Eggs all hatched the other day, but the trainer 'n' I've been workin' together for quite a while.

Enter stage right. Attention directed towards the fiery fox that curled around the Nurse's collar. You have some jealousy issues, she declared, an airy chuckle escaping her lips. She was noting the narrowing of Flareon's eyes and the intensity of the glare. But the Breeder tilted his head with nothing but pure interest in the Fire-type. Somewhat stubborn? Or somewhat vain? Both traits are proven to improve that Special Defense.

But the Flareon didn't ease up, no matter how cautiously Avery inched a tender finger towards it. Sassy nature, eh? His gloved finger swooped low, stroking the Pokemon under the chin and making a straight shot to the back of the ears. It was a move he's used before, one that calms the Pokemon, as well as assessing introductions.

Avery looked up at Heather, just a trick I learned. My Torch is the same way. Fiery lil one, that rascal. But ain't uncommon for a Combusken.

Berry Season // Avery & Reagan

Not much of a writer? But the man was wise, with a humble and honest view that spoke from experience. Even if Reagan didn’t agree, it still made him think. He was curious as to why he wasn’t a writer, but decided to shake off the feeling. He was probably just busy will all his work, and writing for 20 Poke-cents a word would just be a distraction.

"I would love to look around," Reagan said. "And maybe you could also tell me about Breeding? It would make for a nice story."

And one more thing. “Oh! And maybe, could you also show me some of the local Pokemon later?”

Avery wiped the sweat that gathered along the brim of his bandana.  A look around Icirrus, inside the art of Breeding. That didn’t seem too hard. Some terminology the boy might not be used to, but nothing that would stump him for long. Avery was well aware of Reagan’s sharp mind, its eagerness to expand. The amount of potential, of passion, he had was evident. Clear.

Without a warning, Avery began making his way deeper into the Moor. 

                   Ya see,

                                      there’s a bit more to Breeding than jus’  tossin’ in two Pok’mon 'n' hopin’. How the parents act is important. If they ain’t gettin’ ‘long, no use in forcin’ them to make an Egg.

He picked a Pinap Berry from a tree and added it to his bucket. That’s a Stunfisk, Avery interrupted himself, pointing at the brown fish that splashed, broke the surface of the water. But Avery had already warned Reagan of their bite, or worse, a mighty Discharge. Painful Thunderbolt.

He continued on, effortlessly crossing the water by balancing on sawed tree trunks that portrayed steps, emerging from the water’s surface. As if it was second nature to him. Breeders like to refer to species of Pok’mon as Egg Groups. Helps label the product, yanno? 

On the other side of the marsh, Avery stretched his back. Abigail slunk up beside him, nudging his arm to get a taste of their supply. Yanno, Nature is important, too. Trainers come to me lookin’ to hatch a specific Nature. Tells how they grow. His fingers trailed across the deer’s muzzle as she continued nudging. The Breeder grinned. Kinda gets easy to tell a rascal’s Nature after workin’ in this profession. 

Avery led Reagan through the Moor, over the pools of water, and through sodden dirt. Grass that stuck to the sides of their shoes. A few trees huddled close, casting an eerie shadow. Down here’s a clearin’. A shrine, they call it. He tilted his head, leaned forward to examine the meager gaps between trunks. Ain’t that gotta be good for your story?

The Breeder takes a deep breath, letting a slow stream of air out from the small hole his lips create. Pink always reminds me of...uh... that actress., yanno? Chali Dan...

Berry Season // Avery & Reagan

The Reported had noted Avery’s sudden change. How he was beaming, ranting on about his profession and then out of nowhere, his features fell. He grew quiet. Reagan offered him a Tympole, possibly expecting to see the Breeder at work. But all Avery did was pinch its tail delicately between is fingers, and lower it into the marshy waters. 

Yeah, yeah, I’m okay. Avery swatted the air, as if to push the problem aside. It’s just… you wanna stay honest when pursuin’ your career. Modesty ain’t a bad trait to have.

Maybe that was some advice Reagan could put in his column, listen up coordinators, Pokemon Breeder Avery says don’t let it get to ya head.

Reagan did in fact consider adding that in the paper. “You should write the advice column in the paper, you sound so smart about it.”

But then he put down his pencil and asked, “But what’s wrong with having a little pride in your work? If you work hard and help people, then maybe it’s okay to let the modesty go for a bit?”

And while Reagan talked, a few Emolga were landing in the trees. One of them was attempting to grab a Wiki Berry from a branch. Another was trying to perch in  Abby’s antlers.

Avery had never thought of that. Hell, maybe this kid dealt wiser words than he. The job of being a Breeder came with the satisfying feeling of helping people and Pokemon. Of doing good. And he was damn good at it! He had pride in what he did, in what he accomplished at the end of the day. Somewhere deep down, he thought Avery Maples, Pokemon Breeder Extraordinaire rolled right off the tongue. Sounded pretty damn good.

Abigail's huffing and shaking of her leaves caught his attention. What had Reagan said? That he should write in the paper?

Writing. Could the editor make out the jagged lines etched roughly into paper? Could they make it through the fragmented sentences and grammatical errors and still look at him thinking, this guy's a genius? People would second-guess his proclaimed skill, peer down at him from their up-turned noses and ask someone else to care after their Pokemon. Illiteracy was the skeleton in his closet. The obstacle he tripped over, refused to get up and try again. It wasn't as easy as admitting he had a lot to learn.

Politely, Avery flashed Reagan a smile. I-I'm not much of a writer...  He knew changing the subject wasn't going to wane a Reporter from getting the truth, but it was worth a try... but I know this place top to bottom, why don't ya let me show ya 'round?

new headcanon !! + When Avery started practicing Breeding, he was practically illiterate. Not the richest people live in Oldale, and his parents could not suppprt six boys and afford Trainer School all the way in Rustboro City, an obviously more affluent place. This supports why all of the techniques he taught himself are not found in textbooks. and why he experimented on himself. He still hasn't found the motivation to learn to read or do more complex math than just simple calculations, but the words he knows are ones he needs to succeed in his profession. This is also why he relies on Paxton to fly him places because he has trouble reading maps and directions. This is also why he talks the way he does, not only because of his accent.
