Dove Self-Esteem Project x Steven Universe: Teasing and Bullying
Dove Self-Esteem Project has been helping young people build positive body confidence since 2004. Now, the Dove Self-Esteem Project joins Cartoon Network to take on body confidence and self-esteem issues! And who better to teach us a few lessons than the Crystal Gems from Steven Universe?
Remember this great video? I don’t, because I scheduled this post when it came out. Let’s enjoy it again, together!
Padparadscha predicts everyone is about to enjoy the one-year anniversary of her first appearance!
It’s been a busy few days, but I’m hoping to get back to blogging soon. I realized that I’m not done with Your Mother and Mine yet--I have a bunch of great fanart to reblog, and I want to talk more about the Off Colors. Then I can get to The Big Show, which was such a great episode.
I do have some exciting SU-adjacent news, at least. In a case of life imitating art (or at least, art-vaguely-pretending-to-be-life imitating art-that’s-pretending-a-LOT-less), this past Sunday, an enormous wrestler named Braun Strowman couldn’t challenge for a tag team belt on his own, so he picked an actual child “at random” from the live audience (actually a ref’s son), and teamed up.
Then, since it’s wrestling and not real life, they won! That made 10 year old Nicholas the youngest WWE champion of all time, before the two of them handed in their belts the next day due to “scheduling conflicts”.
It’s not quite Tiger Millionaire, but it’s not far off!
Your Mother and Mine airs tonight! If your household counts for Nielsen views, pleasewatch it on TV. If not, watch it anyway! Or play it again on the app (app views = best views).
I’ve already posted a lot about it, but I did enjoy this article’s take: Steven Universe Recap: Your Mother and Mine by Vrai Kaiser.
The episode opens with each of the Off-Colors telling a version of Rose Quartz’s legend, and Garnet responds with her own legend. Not the real, messy truth, but the version these outcast gems need to hear in order to value themselves. Garnet doesn’t tell them any lies, which distinguishes her story from the false propaganda being told on Homeworld, but she elides the details that make history messy. She tells them about a hero, not a person.
We’re so used to the show being from Steven’s perspective that it’s sometimes easy to forget that not everything revolves around him. Garnet isn’t telling her story to Steven, this time. He’s there, but this story is for the Off-Colors.
I still think Garnet doesn’t know the full truth of what happened to Pink Diamond, of course. Or the full truth about Rose. But we know she does remember just how awful the war was, and she leaves that part out.
It’s very interesting that Lapis presents Homeworld’s armies as diminishing towards an inevitable loss in Same Old World, while Garnet presents the same scenario here for the rebels. I suspect that neither Pink Diamond’s shattering, nor the Corruption Attack, was driven by those logistical concerns. But we will see.
The Big Show airs in a week, so I’ll start posting about it today, I expect. Please block either “su unaired” or the episode title itself if you want to avoid spoilers.
Oh my god, so what if Steven really did drain Rose’s energy while she was pregnant with him, and that was when she realized she wouldn’t survive? Man, that would mean that the moment she “gave birth” would be the moment she didn’t even have the strength to hold a physical form. Imagine the kind of strain she got on her body every time he had a growth spurt, with no time for her to adjust. I’m sure the way he distorted her physical form was difficult as it, as well as maintaining the shapeshifted organs required for his growth for nine whole months. I’m tired just thinking about it!
Thanks, I hate it.
(if she was planning for him to have her Gem then she knew they couldn't both exist, tho)
In the corrupted gems get healed post, what's the white diamond image from and what's the theory in that one? It's one I haven't heard before!
imma try to summarize, but uhh the image is from “serious steven”, of the corrupted pyramid/obelisk gem. some theorize that that gem is WD. some points/speculation i’ve seen for it are:
white’s energy, as seen in YMAM, is light, which is what makes every gem. if YD can control the stability of the gems form, making them unable to form, and BD can control the stability of their emotions, then white might be able to directly manipulate the light of a gem, and the information in it. and, if she’s the one able to control that, and this is the first time she attempted the corruption attack, then it’s possible she was also affected, and fell to earth.
the gem looks a LOT like a white diamond, with an identical/v similar shape to yellow’s gem
the obelisk features similar aesthetics/details to WD’s mural, such as a white shape on the forehead, and two hands coming together to hold something near the solar plexus (in the obelisk, it’s her gem, in the mural it’s an unknown round object, rumored to represent homeworld)
it’d explain her absence on homeworld - she isn’t purposefully missing out on many important happenings like the trial of rose quartz, she literally can’t be there.
the pyramid gem had an absolutely HUMONGOUS form for a gem. I mean, corrupted gems in general are really big, but the pyramid gem was it’s own structure, with a control room, a central chamber, and several other rooms for the gems to get lost in. presumably, only a very large and powerful gem could have a form that big when corrupted.
the pyramid gem has the mural inside it, which seems to depict a scene from the war with rose quartz presenting a diamond to the remaining diamonds, white, blue, and yellow. this would obviously be a v important event in the war if all 3 were present, so maybe there’s a reason white would choose to have this on her form.
also the fact that, in the “serious steven” development art, the obelisk was originally a statue with 5 pointed hair very similar to how WD is currently presented in all her depictions (thanks to a /sug/ anon for this pic):
the most damning piece of evidence i’ve seen against it is that, if she is WD, than why hasn’t WD been struck from the diamond authority symbol. the best explanations i’ve seen are that either yellow and blue don’t know, they know but they don’t want homeworld gems to know TWO diamonds were lost to earth. additionally, there’s the issue of her gem maybe being a bit TOO small in “serious steven”, but that’s something i believe could be changed/retconned, if the diamond’s sizes were changed
personally, i think the idea of the first gem steven healing being WHITE DIAMOND would be amazing. she is presumably, for all intents and purposes, the opposite of steven - he is an organic hyper-empathetic being fighting for freedom for the life on the planet earth, she is the queen matriarch of the gem species, disgusted by organics and hybrids, and only working towards expanding her and her species’ empire. would they get along at first? would she forgive him, or ally with him? would she immediately attempt to contact her fellow diamonds, or call them back to earth? would she try to unleash ANOTHER attack?
Considering the mural in Serious Steven puts Rose and her opponent (possibly White Diamond) at about the same height, I would say that the the height/size change is a good possibility. I mean, their idea for the Diamonds’ heights even changed between YD’s debut and her second appearance, where the height was solidified.
See her Pearl came up to her knee in Message Received.
But both her and Blue’s pearl fit in the palm of her hand in Message Received. I also find the idea of the Diamonds getting bigger as the crew try to soldifiy their characters to be kinda hilarious. Like I can just imagine Rebecca pipping in like “okay, that idea is pretty good, but what if we make them taller?”
YOOOOOOO
Anyway, we know from Peridot that Homeworld has no idea what corruption is. Yellow and Blue may not understand what happened to White. All they know is that she wasn't shattered, while Pink, presumably, was. So they left her in the symbol?
Doesn't explain why they'd leave the Cluster to destroy her later, unless they somehow didn't know she ended up back on Earth.
While I agree that the design of the Sand Castle fits much better with what a ziggurat looks like, the desert is never referred to as a battlefield. The Strawberry Battlefields however... We know Rose lied to the CGs she lost Bismuth at the Battle for the Ziggurat, and upon being show the Strawberry Battlefields, Bismuth says she was 'just there'. So presumably it was one of the last places Bismuth was seen (after which the confrontation between Bismuth and Rose took place)
Perhaps, but I still don’t think the pyramid has anything to do with the battle for the ziggurat, and was more a fixture that was added closer to the end of the war (bismuth went missing 300 years before the war ended), if not when the Diamonds were retreating. I say this mainly because of the Diamond insignia inside it:
Which is the same one they use in Era 2, post Pink Diamond:
But Centi, who was active until the very end of the war, drew the Diamond insignia like this:
it’s the old symbol, but without Pink being represented, meaning that they didn’t have time to make an established symbol that everyone was aware of after she was shattered. I can’t really think of an explanation for this besides the theory that the corruption blast bounced off Rose’s shield, hit White Diamond, corrupted her (full or partially), and Yellow and Blue trapped her gem in that dungeon like room and sent it down to Earth where no one would ever find her (but they didn’t have the heart to actually shatter her, I guess). Otherwise, idk.
That's a really good point about the Diamond Authority symbols (and more details that confirm the pyramid post-dates Pink Diamond and suggest that the mural shows her being shattered).
But my wacky theory was actually a bit more off the wall than that: I was suggesting that White Diamond got Corrupted before the corruption song. Not by the rebound off Rose's shield, but from the way Pink's gemstone was shattered (the Mural may show Rose, Pink's gemstone, and White).
Pearl does refer to the Strawberry Battlefield as where they made their stand against Homeworld, but that could have been long after Bismuth went missing (as long as there was an earlier visit there for Bismuth to remember). I doubt Rose shattered Pink before Bismuth invented the Breaking Point, or else Bismuth would have said something about double standards and hypocrisy).
You know I always wondered if there was any significance about the fact that Pearl couldn’t open the service door at the Zoo. Why was the panel of that door so different to the others, so much that Pearl couldn’t figure it out? maybe only PD or her court could open that door?
(another point to the theory that Pearl was NOT PD’s personal Pearl, maybe?… In fact, even the other doors at the Zoo, she opens them but with some difficulty. Pearl doesn’t appear to be as familiar with the facility as I expect PD’s Pearl was *thinking emoji*)
I assumed with the interactive screen like peridot’s limb enhamcers/the controls on era 2 ships, homeworld has upgraded its tenchnology. the zoo also has era 2 ships there, and robonoids got steven “ready” to enter the zoo (still waiting for someone to check the records and realize “rose quartz” was a human at the zoo) so even if no one visits, it’s not left technologically isolated.
also remember that it is heavily implied that ROSE was the one who entered the room through that door. maybe all the other ones are the same but that particular one changed.
Rose probably punched her way in and that panel had to be replaced.
ACTUAL JASPER CONTENT
because its my sworn duty to transcript this stuff:
amethyst: people say that words can’t hurt but I know from experience that’s not true.
jasper: you look so small, you look so weak-
director: jasper, a little to your right
jasper: oh (shifts a little towards the right) YOU LOOK WRONG!!!
amethyst: so I’m short, I stayed in the ground a little too long. got a little smushed (jasper laughs) but maybe I’m okay like this and maybe she’s blowing things out of proportion because she’s got her own issues to work out
jasper: what.
amethyst: who knows but what I do know is I can always say “hey, I don’t appreciate that!”
jasper: WHO CARES WHAT YOU THINK, RUNT!!!
(jasper starts destroying the set like a drama queen)
amethyst: just be you! it’s up to them to realize they’re being a bully
(jasper yells and bursts out of the rubble, slightly awkward gasp before returning to the stage)
jasper: NO ONE DESERVES TO BE MADE FUN OF BECAUSE OF HOW THEY LOOK!!! IF YOU CATCH YOURSELF MAKING HURTFUL COMMENTS MAYBE….. THINK ABOUT WHERE THAT ANGER’S COMING FROM.
director: great, cut.
jasper: how do you keep your cool like that? this is so much pressure….
amethyst: pressure made me who I am
jasper: wow….
Here’s the first video (“teasing and bullying”) with a full transcript, again. Can’t wait for the next five!
This is a long press release, but it’s worth the read. Some highlights:
“Dove announces a two-year global partnership with Cartoon Network’s Steven Universe to educate young people on body confidence through the cartoon’s themes of inclusivity and empowerment, world and characters - going directly to them in a medium they know and love, something that has never been done before.”
“The partnership will come to life in a series of six short animated films directed by Steven Universe creator Rebecca Sugar, the first of which premieres today. Working with the Dove Self-Esteem Project, all content has been carefully co-created and grounded in scientific evidence by body image expert, Dr Phillippa Diedrichs at the Centre for Appearance Research at the University of the West of England in order to make a meaningful impact on a young person’s self-esteem and body confidence.
Later this year, an original song featuring the cast of the show, an accompanying music video, and an educational eBook will also be launched adding to the Dove Self-Esteem Project’s commitment to create a media landscape for young people that is inclusive by acknowledging every person’s uniqueness and representing true diversity.”
“ “Cartoons are a powerful medium when it comes to empathy and understanding, which is why my team and I take great care with Steven Universe to reflect real issues that affect our audience,” says Rebecca . “I’m grateful that I will have access to a plethora of research on body image and mental health thanks to this partnership with the Dove Self-Esteem Project. This is an issue I have struggled with personally and I hope this will be a chance to amplify positive messages about self-awareness and acceptance.” “
y'know I was just thinking. a very important element that’s missing when discussing rose’s lack of empathy is the fact that all gems have little to no empathy.
like peridot for example had to learn the concept of “hurting someone’s feelings” as part of her redemption arc. she needed steven to tell her that other people had feelings like her.
and that’s really the default for all gems. while gems are capable of love and compassion for others but empathy is a learned skill for them.
A big part of this is because gems are taught that they’re all both interchangeable and replaceable. When you live in a world where no one (else) is an individual, you don’t think about other gems having individual thoughts, feelings, or ideas.
Even gems like Topaz and Topaz, who discover their own individuality in each other, think that they’re both secretly defective. That somehow they, and only they, have this shameful secret. It doesn’t occur to them that all gems, everywhere, have the same rich inner life.

Great news! You can now read Connie’s paper here:
Raccoons: a Masked Menace?
This seemed like a more pleasant way to celebrate April Fool’s Day than any kind of prank. And for those of you who celebrate Easter in the modern fashion, I have included several “easter eggs” for you to find.

I just realized today we’ve never had a Jenny-focused episode. We’ve had a Buck-focused episode, a Sour Cream-focused episode, a Kiki-focused episode, a couple for the Pizza family and the Cool Kids, but never one just for Jenny.
I suspect we might get one soon!
LIKE MAYBE ONE ABOUT HOW MUCH SHE LIKES SADIE THAT’D BE PRETTY PEACHY KEEN IN MY BOOK
Simple plot: Jenny likes Sadie romantically and tries to express it, thinking that her affectionate and flirtatious gestures will be understood. Sadie explains away everything Jenny does as just being friendly or kind because she is living the Tumblr oblivious lesbian cliché. Eventually Jenny realises Sadie doesn’t have the confidence to believe a cute girl is into her without being Very Directly Told. So she tells her, maybe with a heavy metal love song.
(steps up to the mic) “This is a song about a girl I know. (pause) Called Sadie. Sadie Miller. Standing right over there by the prop coffin. That one, specifically, and these lyrics should be taken literally. ONE TWO THREE FOUR!”
I, LIKE, LITERALLY ROMANTICALLY LIKE YOU
a song by Jenny Pizza feat. Buck Dewey and Sour Cream
HEY GIRL DO YOU WANNA GO OUT SOME TIME WE COULD SEE A MOVIE OR TWO A SCARY B-MOVIE LIKE WE BOTH LIKE BUT NOT LIKE I LIKE YOUUUUU
(Buck and Sour Cream: NO!)
BECAUSE YOU CAN’T MAKE OUT WITH A MOVIE NO YOU CAN’T MAKE OUT WITH A MOVIE WELL YOU COULD TRY BUT THAT’D BE WEIRD AM I BEING CRYSTAL CLEEEEEEEAR?
I, LIKE, LITERALLY ROMANTICALLY LIKE YOU! I, LIKE, LITERALLY ROMANTICALLY LIKE YOU! I, LIKE, LITERALLY ROMANTICALLY LIKE YOU! AND IF YOU DON’T LIKE ME THE SAME WAY THAT’S OKAY I CAN DEAL BUT I’M TELLING YOU HOW I FEEEEEEEEL
(Buck and Sour Cream: UNAMBIGUOUSLY!)
‘CUZ I GET THE IMPRESSION YOU’RE NOT GONNA FIGURE IT OUT ON YOUR OWN BECAUSE YOU HAVE CRAZY LOW SELF-ESTEEM AND I KIND OF WANNA PUNCH WHOEVER MADE YOU FEEL THAT WAY ABOUT YOURSELF WHEN YOU’RE SO SMART AND CUTE AND FUNNY AND THIS PART OF THE SONG DOESN’T RHYME AT ALL BUT IT’S SINCEEEEEEEEEEEERE
BECAUSE
I, LIKE, LITERALLY ROMANTICALLY LIKE YOU IF WE WERE BRITISH I’D FANCY YOU IF WE WERE JAPANESE I’D DAISUKI YOU IF WE WERE WEREWOLVES I’D SAY AWOOOOOOO LET’S WATCH GINGER SNAPS AND SMOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO…ch.
(smashes guitar)
#tho Jenny might not destroy the guitar ‘cause that shit ain’t cheap
It was a fake balsa wood one with a flash squib inside. She thought about that. Plus she debuted this song at a rehearsal (as opposed to the secret rehearsal she had with the boys to get it ready) with just their friends there because she figured if there was a whole audience Sadie would probably be too embarrassed and bolt.
(as the last note fades away and Jenny and Sadie’s eyes meet)
Buck and Sour Cream: we’re not here we’re not here we’re not here…
(exeunt, dabbing supportively)
This is incredible. 10/10 concept. 11/10 lyrics.
