Welcome to Mogai Around the World

This is a blog with the goal of making the MOGAI community less centered on white USAmericans. This includes sharing cultural identities, news, and personal experiences from non-Americans and American POC. I will make it very clear that I myself am white and originally from the US but since leaving have noticed how little there is in the way of non-English posts, posts taking the rest of the world into consideration, and true appreciation for cultural diversity and identities within queerness.

This is a personal thing I'm doing for fun as a part of my special interest in world cultures. I am not going to invest undue time and effort into it, so expect long absences.

While I'll mostly be reblogging cultural identity flags, I also want to hear from you! Tell me where you're from, what it's like to be queer in your environment, how that impacts your identity, anything you want!

About Me

I am a sociology graduate of mixed Swedish, Irish, and Cajun descent. I grew up in the American South and have lived and traveled across Western Europe. I have had an intense interest in the world's human cultures since I was a small child, and have devoted myself to the study of the world's cultures and languages. I currently identify as an unofficial Episcopal (baptism hopefully dropping in 2026!) and also have a personal history with non-theistic Satanism and Norse Heathenism. Through this blog I hope to connect people with labels, flags, and art outside of the assumed default identities of white, culturally Christian atheist, USAmerican so often seen in MOGAI spaces. I am doing my best to be as objective and sensitive as possible, but given that my own background obviously does not relate to everyone and does check some of those "default" boxes, I am likely to make some mistakes. Thank you for joining me in this space and helping to shed more light on the beautiful diversity of our queer community.

ARIRANHA ;; a presentation term for queer brazilians who are actively seeking other queer brazilians in gringo spaces as an attempt to find community

MEANING ;; "ariranha", or the giant river otter (Pteronura brasiliensis), is a south american mustelid, known for being extremely social. MOGAI and microlabels in general aren't well known - or accepted - in the mainstream brazilian queer community, so logically we are more active in gringo spaces, and yet, we are always seeking other brazilians, other brazilian terms, even though we're not even in a brazilian space. Like giant river otters, we seek our kin.

Two identical flags, each with seven stripes running horizontally. From the top down, the first stripe is a bright pink, the next stripe is a dark pink, the next stripe is a dirty purple-pink. The stripe after that is muddy purple. Under the muddy purple stripe, the three colors prior are mirrored. All stripes are equal in width other than the two dirty purple-pink stripes. The only difference between the two flags is that one has a brown of David in the middle and the other does not.

These are both genders from Jewish culture, so we decided to just combine our submissions here. Tumtum (the flag on the left) is where a person’s gender is hidden or private, and is closest to agender. Androgynos (the flag on the right) is where a person is intersex or otherwise has qualities of both a woman and a man, and thus would be closest to bigender. Both genders are assigned to children if they are born as intersex.

Unfortunately, the most that you would see of tumtum and androgynos is discussions of how to deal with the child’s genitals (as in, whether or not to perform surgery; tumtum is usually assigned to intersex conditions where the genitals end up covered by skin, and androgynos is assigned to intersex conditions where they are a mix of the usual two). Either that, or these two genders are treated as mere “what if” genders for certain laws (for instance, if a law states different treatment for women and men, how would it apply to someone who is both or neither? That sort of thing).

Although there are only two of us in our chatroom (I am tumtum, my friend is androgynos), there is definitely a movement IRL to bring more attention to these two genders. We encourage any nonbinary Jewish people who are reading this to consider if tumtum or androgynos may be fitting for them. Or at least reblogging this so that the information may spread! For helpful links, again, there isn’t too much other that repeats of what I’ve mentioned here, but this is a wonderful autobiographical account of a tumtum rabbi and their dealings in promoting these two genders as viable Jewish nonbinary genders!

For the symbolism of the flags, we put the white and blue bars on both to represent a connection to Judaism. In particular, blue is considered a divine color, associated with the sky and G-d. Meanwhile white has a general symbolism of purity, as it does in many other cultures. The grey for tumtum is because I’ve found grey has an association with agender, which as I mentioned is probably the closest English equivalent to tumtum. Not to mention, grey can be seen as some obscure/not specific/hiding, similar to the idea of tumtum gender. For the androgynos flag, the blue and red bars represent man and woman, thus how androgynos is seen as a mix of the two.
