“Who’s that guy?” you heard people whispering as you exited your lecture hall, exhausted after a long day of classes.
“He looks kind of scary.”
“Do you think he goes here?”
Curiosity peaked, you stood on the tips of your toes to look over the many heads of your peers, wanting to see the guy that everyone was murmuring about. When you spotted Jay leaning against his motorcycle –clad head-to-toe in black, and scrolling through what you assumed was his Instagram feed– your lips curled into a smile.
“Jay!” you hollered, causing your boyfriend’s head to snap up in the direction of your voice. He grinned instantly, which brightened his expression and made him look significantly less intimidating than when he wore his natural frown, raising a hand to wave excitedly at you. You returned the gesture, delighted to see him.
As Jay put his phone and bucket hat in his pocket you squeezed through the crowd of people, ignoring their stares and whispers with a roll of your eyes, and raced down the steps towards your boyfriend. “Hi,” you greeted, slightly out of breath from your sprint. The moment you saw his deep brown eyes up close, your knew your heartbeat wasn’t going to slow any time soon.
“Hey,” he replied, sounding equally as breathless despite the fact that he hadn’t moved in nearly fifteen minutes. “I missed you,” Jay added, a minuscule pout forming on his face.
You wrapped your arms around his waist, pulling him in for a hug. “I bet you did,” you teased him, pulling away enough to look him in the eyes. “What are you doing here? I thought you had to work late tonight.”
Jay lifted a shoulder in a shrug. “I lied,” he confessed. “I just wanted to surprise you. Are you surprised?” You nodded, feeling an overwhelming sense of tranquility take over your body. Ever since you met him, Jay always managed to both calm you down and make your heart race. “Okay I don’t mean to sound conceited but it feels like everyone is looking at me.”
“Maybe it’s because of your hair,” you joked, reaching a hand up to fix what the bucket hat had mussed. “Let them stare. They’re just judging you by your looks. If they stay any longer, they’ll realise that you’re just a huge softie.”
“Then we better get going before you tarnish my reputation,” Jay replied with a wink, pecking you on the forehead once before releasing you from his hold.
You snorted. “Right, your reputation,” you agreed sarcastically, accepting your motorcycle helmet from him when he passed it to you. “Let’s face it, anyone who knows you has seen you baby Jungwon often enough to know you’re not so scary.”
Jay mockingly repeated your words in a terrible imitation of your voice, eliciting peels of laughter from you as you got onto the motorcycle behind him. Wrapping your arms around his torso, you called out: “Go forth, trusty steed!”
Jay laughed, wondering what on earth he did in his past lives to deserve you. “You’re so lame.”
