Seo Moon Jo & Eom Bok Soon:

Their dynamic has always fascinated (and traumatized) me. I think Moon Jo and Bok Soon deserve their own prequel, similar to shows like Succession. Moon Jo’s behaviors, his subtle traits around Bok Soon and Bok Soon’s behavior towards Moon Jo….. there can be multiple books written on just their dynamic

In SFH, we don’t see much of a background for both Moon Jo and Bok Soon. However ……. SO MUCH stuff is implied and I believe it was done intentionally. Good metaphors, symbolism and implications are hallmarks of good psychological thriller. This is the caliber and expertise of director Lee Chang Hee and screenwriter Jung Yi Do… they managed to imply so much with symbolism.

When it comes to Moon Jo’s behavior with Bok Soon, there are some traits that are repetitive and noticeable. One of them is him going constantly “do you still not believe me ?” Throughout the series, we see MJ going repeatedly, on different instances “do you not believe me ?” , “do you still not believe me ?” People say, it’s just manipulation. Maybe a little, but is it fully manipulation ?

Let’s look at another thing. Moon Jo’s clinic. He named it Saemteo Dental Clinic after Saemteo Orphanage. Why ?

He’s clearly not fond of his supposed “friends” who he grew up with (the twins). He and Bok Soon definitely don’t share quintessential mother child bond. So why ?

Furthermore, let’s look at another thing

In this scene, Bok Soon tells him “when are we gonna move ? And what are you gonna do to room 303 ? You failed once, I don’t wanna risk it. Are you sure ?”

And then Moon Jo gets up and goes next to Bok Soon. Her face, visibly satisfied because she knew that she was able to get under Moon Jo’s skin through that comment. Moon Jo, even though secretly seething inside, says “I’m sure, just wait a little” and leaves

And we see this kinda interactions again and again throughout the series. Bok Soon constantly trying to undermine Moon Jo and Moon Jo visibly frustrated.

No matter how successful a child is, how much validation they get from outside society, a child ALWAYS needs validation and praise from parent or parental figure. Always. Especially from Mothers. In Bok Soon’s own words, she found Moon Jo when he was a kid and supposedly dying. And then raised him. And other than accounts of her chasing child MJ occasionally with a knife and him hiding in a room as a kid, shaking in fear ….. we don’t know much about how MJ’s childhood was with his “mom”.

My guess; even after everything, Moon Jo wanted a mom. Above all, above everything, he wanted validation from his mother. He wanted his mother to believe in him, his abilities and he wanted to show his mom that “look, I’m actually devoted to you”. He became someone who is successful career wise, he became capable in his mother’s “business”, he even tolerated Eden people and their behavior which, judging from Moon Jo’s expressions, annoyed the hell outta him.

MJ literally would have done anything and everything if Bok Soon gave him even a shred of validation and praise, like normal mother and son. And he most likely did do anything and everything, to show his devotion and loyalty to his mom. He even stayed in that awful goshiwon and named his own private business to showcase that.

But things were different on the other side. Bok Soon, even though she raised Moon Jo, didn’t consider him as a son. She raised him for his potential as a right hand man. And then, like any narcissistic parent, when Bok Soon saw he actually became capable…. She started seeing Moon Jo as competition. That dynamic was very clear in this scene

Bok Soon’s behavior towards Moon Jo is always ……. passively condescending. Always doubting him, somewhat mocking him, highlighting his failure rather than successes. Even when Moon Jo says not to mess with Jung Woo, Bok Soon and her gang don’t really care and mess with him anyways. Eden people don’t fully take him seriously, even when he kills 2 of them.

Nothing Moon Jo did, seemed to be enough to appease and satisfy Bok Soon. A narcissistic parent can never praise or validate their child properly. And as a result, the child becomes desperate. They become desperate to do ANYTHING just so their parent would actually praise them and validate them. For same reason, I think Moon Jo and Bok Soon’s dynamic is similar to the webtoon Bastard, but that’s for another day

A child who wasn’t fed love on a spoon, will lick it off of a knife

And Moon Jo ultimately did that. He was practically living in prison, but at some point he tried to … “normalize” that just so his mom would notice and praise him. But nothing seemed to work ultimately. So after everything he did for his entire life, if there was STILL nothing….. then he would rather break that bond. Lots of children go no contact with narcissistic parents later in life. Moon Jo couldn’t just go no contact like that. Bok Soon has implied multiple times that she would throw him under the bus.

Somehow, whether by accident or coincidence, he got that validation from Jung Woo, an aspiring crime thriller author. JW’s novel’s protagonist is surprisingly similar to Moon Jo and he wrote it even before meeting Moon Jo. Being the muse of a crime thriller author…… Moon Jo was extremely flattered and rightfully so

Sometimes I wonder, how things would’ve gone if Bok Soon actually liked Moon Jo. If she actually treated him like a son instead of an investment and competition. If Moon Jo got that from his mother figure, how would things have gone ? He became extremely protective of Jung Woo at some point because they belonged together, would it have been similar for Bok Soon if Moon Jo had a sense of belonging with her ? I guess we just have to wonder …

Moonjo watching Jongwoo, whispering through his wall, calling him honey and someone important to him—all before ever having met his beloved officially. There might be some flaws in this idea, though.

The one who watched Jongwoo through the hole in the wall had to be MJ, yes, since there's no way MJ would let anyone get to his bedroom. But the one who stalked JW the first time he arrived at Eden could be anyone. In the 2nd gif it was Kihyuk's voice. But the voice came from MJ's room. The director had been consistently (and interestingly) making Kihyuk and Moonjo interchangeable from the very first seconds of the series. The most unmistakable one was in the scene (ep.3 on 15.33, MJ said hello before joined JW in the shower) in which the director let us hear and see the glimpse of what we thought was Kihyuk, but once the camera was focused, it turned out to be Moonjo. So in conclusion even though we heard Kihyuk's voice, it was actually Moonjo's. Someone "important" could refer to Jongwoo, Kihyuk, or even the detective (tho the last one was very unlikely). He might already plan to anesthetize Kihyuk to kill him, therefore the syringe (which was in line with the theory saying Kihyuk was decided to die anyway, regardless he made a big mistake by killing the detective or not)(but he brought way too many syringes just to kill one single person, so I dunno. Did he routinely bring home syringes every couple of days?). Even with all those flaws, I still would like to think that it's canon. After all, it would explain perfectly why in their first meeting Moonjo seemed to already know Jongwoo inside out, understand him, and even take a liking to him.

Ok, so for the time being I’m just scanning the pages. I have a few days off next month, so I’m gonna thoroughly read the book then. I finished translating (with Papago) episode 3 of SFH and started episode 4. Here are my rough takeaways:

1. Jung Woo is definitely an unreliable narrator. Some parts of the script is written in a way where it seems like Jung Woo is writing a scene and then the camera pans out to it. Also, our Jung Woo sshi probably imagined this Moon Jo face (I LOVE this face of him 😍😍😍 he he )

2. Moon Jo doesn’t sweat even in sweltering heat

3. Moon Jo seemed to be listening to music while he was eating Tupperware meat. In series, he was just sitting.

4. Jung Woo seemed to have fallen ON Moon Jo ? In the dead cat in the bag in alley scene. Moon Jo tapped his shoulder so JW gets up. In the series, JW gets up by himself

Overall: the script is deliberately written in a way where it seems …. a bit ambiguous. It IS meant to be open ended. The confusion is intentional. The storytelling is absolutely amazing !!!!! And so far, no mention of MJ having a wife and kid (I have heard this theory so many times before) . If it’s mentioned later, I’ll post. So far, no background information on Seo Moon Jo is given in the scriptbook

You were done

That is the only phrase you had to say about your state right now. You took another look at your desk- papers spread randomly, 3 cups of coffee, laptop heating up because of doing multiple tasks at the same time.

You looked up at the clock '5:42 pm' it read, you had no idea of how the time passed.

"God, I came to the library at 9:00 am" you thought.

You stood up, stretched your body and you heard small popping noises which was the result of sitting for 8-9 hours straight.

You had skipped lunch and your stomach grumbled at the thought of food, you looked at your laptop and found out that you have still more pages to write, you had to submit your research for extra credits to your college professor.

But still food won, you went to the nearby Cafe and ordered a sandwich. You couldn't keep your eyes off from the chocolate truffle cake, so you bought one too.

You ate the sandwich and cake. You were on your way back to the library. You saw someone sitting in your place and scrolling through your research papers. You rushed to your spot to give them a piece of a mind on about how they shouldn't touch other's belongings. But you stopped midway when you identified who was sitting in your place

It was your boyfriend, Lee Dong Wook . You guys shared a class 3 years ago, then you became close and went on dates, 1 month of going on dates without knowing the answer for ' what type of relationship are they?' , finally Dongwook asked you to be his girlfriend.

Now that you were close enough to see his expression, he had a proud expression in his face. He must have felt someone staring at his profile as he lifted and turned his head to face you, his blank expression turned to a bright smile. His smile made you smile automatically and you wondered how even after 3 years of dating you guys could make each other hearts beat.

"Your research is amazing, darling" Dongwook praised.

" Don't be ridiculous, its basic you know" you replied, not believing his words.

" No, its not only amazing but your ideas are also fresh, you are one of the best students i have seen in my entire life, your dedication and respect to the subject always leads to beautiful output, never let anyone say otherwise, you are my brilliant girlfriend" He said.

Your tired brain couldn't tolerate his sweet words so you went straight to him and pulled his collar to kiss him. Your stomach filled with butterflies and cheeks red from the intensity of the kiss.

Dongwook was shocked but immediately responded to your kiss and started to lead it.

Your tongue and his tongue was embracing themselves and they seem to not want to let go of each other.

Both of you realized that you are in a public place and reluctantly pulled away but still stood in each other's embrace.

His collar was displaced and your shirt was crumpled a little bit but both of you didn't care.

You were just looking at each other and communicating through eyes, he found out that you were tired and helped you pack up.

As you reached home he carried you bridal style and placed on the bed. He went to the bathroom to fill the tub with hot water, infused with lavender bubbles and bath salt. He left the room so that you can bath in peace.

After the shower you went to the kitchen to see him making popcorn and arranging chips on a plate. He saw you standing in the Kitchen.

"Choose a movie for us to watch, its been long since we had a inhome date like this" he said

" Do have any preferences?" You asked

" I would say horror, so that you will stay on my lap the whole movie" He replied.

You laughed and said "Whatever the prince wants, he gets, i will go and choose a good horror film" you said.

It is good to say that you spent the whole movie on his lap, closing your eyes every 5 minutes and sleeping the whole night in his arms.

When did life become some light and how the hell did you find a guy like Lee Dong Wook♡.
