What does "moving an appointment forward" mean? - Results
At the time of writing this there are in total 264 responses to the form with participants native to the following 22 (!!!) languages: Arabic, Bengali, Danish, Dutch/Flemish, English, Finnish, French, German, Hebrew, Hindi, Hungarian, Icelandic, Italian, Malay, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Slovak, Spanish, Swedish, Tamil, Turkish.
If you haven't filled out the form yet but want to, you can still do so here. To maintain some form of scientific integrity please do that before reading further (<- me pretending that all of us having heard dnp talk about this hasn't already biased us in any way <3).

Question: What do you personally think "moving an appointment forward" means?
The cool thing about this is, it matches the results from Moli @tetrapaec's poll with 680 votes almost perfectly + I found some random survey on reddit with over 2,000 votes that also came in at about the 70/30 split.

Okay hi, now that I have your attention, here's the linguistic theory behind this (because yes, there is theory, this isn't just some random misunderstanding on phil's part, this has been studied).
To keep it very short, in English there are two perceptions of time (Dan actually kind of got that right in the podcast):
moving-time: we are stationary and time moves along us (like a conveyor belt) -> if something is moved forward (in the direction of the movement of time) it happens earlier
moving-ego: time is stationary (like a road) and we move along it -> if something is moved forward (in the direction of our movement) it happens later (McGlone & Harding, 1998)
Why is this relevant? Because that shows that there isn’t really a right or wrong, it genuinely is linguistically ambiguous.
What I was mainly interested in was how a) the native language of participants and b) for English native speakers the home country affects how you understand that phrase.
Alright, let’s get into it.
The main question asked was: “What do you personally think "moving an appointment forward" means?”
With the options:
The appointment is preponed (it happens earlier than planned).
The appointment is postponed (it happens later than planned).
I’m not sure
Results - English
(Note: the percentages you can see are for within the rows, to showcase the differing opinions within the language (or country in this case))
I got by far the most responses from US and UK English speakers (apologies to the not explicitly listed English speaking countries, that's fully on me trying to make that form in like 20 minutes, I didn't expect that many responses lol).
US-Americans are more split on this than people from the UK. This is interesting in that dnp are, well, British, so the most interesting number for their context specifically is the 85% of UK English speakers that would disagree with them and say that "moving sth forward" means it's earlier.
Australians on the other hand seem to agree much more on what that phrase means, but there were also significantly less participants.
Not shown in this table but also interesting is that 9% (10 participants) of US-Americans said they hadn’t heard that phrase before. Only one other English native speaker outside the US picked that option. Filtering out the responses of those people only minorly changes the result of the question above.
There has been an experiment on this phenomenon specifically that found that English native speakers tend to favour the moving-time perspective (McGlone & Harding, 1998), which is in line with the results of this study. However, the methodology of that study isn’t comparable with this one (it may surprise you, but they didn’t just haphazardly throw a badly thought through form at people) + it’s from almost 30 years ago. So it’s nice to see that at least the tendency of our data is the same, although our results appear to show a stronger lean towards the moving time perspective.
Some general sentiments from the comments:
You should always clarify what the new time is.
“Moving forward” reminds of moving the time forward for daylight savings.
No one says “move forward” just use “move up”.
“Move forward” is very clearly earlier???

Other languages
The results of participants with a native language other than English were 4% for “not sure”, 42% for “later” and 54% for “earlier” with 76 responses in total. However, those percentages don’t really tell us much because the responses were fairly heterogeneous between different languages and much more homogenous within the languages. That’s why I split the results into four groups.
If there is any background given that is specific to the native language, I put them under the respective tables (+ some results from a review paper that I found (Feist & Duffy, 2023))
Languages with at least 2 participants that largely (>75%) agree that forward means earlier
German:
“This seems to be a common thing in other languages but I never experienced any confusion when someone in Germany said that a Termin must be moved forward. We would say. Der Termin muss nach vorne verschoben werden.“
One notable thing about German in this survey is that (after English) it is the language with by far the most responses and all 19 of them agree. This is in line with previous studies (compiled in that review paper) that show that up 95% of Germans think that way.
Languages with at least 2 participants that largely (>75%) agree that forward means later
Spanish:
“In English I would 100% assume it means move an hour later, but thinking about it, in Spanish we say "adelantar la cita" which literally means "move the appointment forward" and it does mean moving it earlier”
“in spanish "mover [un evento] para más adelante" (to move an event forward) means to postpone but "adelantar [un evento]" means to prepone.”
Swedish:
“I think i'm influenced by how we express things in my native language here. Moving an event forward usually means forwards in time (so later), we would say "we'll put this earlier/meet earlier" or something”
A study cited in that review paper supports this and showed that 80% of Swedish speakers have this linguistic perspective on time.
Languages with mixed responses
Dutch:
“I guess the English translation of the Dutch saying is 'were bringing/pulling it forward' which language wise paints a more 'moving something closer to you' picture. Similar when an appointment is being postponed one talks about pushing something away. So I guess the image that the words used provoques make it so that's hard to misunderstand which way the meeting is going.”
A note on that from the review paper mentioned above which explains our results pretty perfectly and that I am citing very incorrectly: “Belgian speakers of Dutch tended to adopt the Moving Ego and Moving Time perspectives at chance levels in response to the construction voorwaarts verplaatst (moved forward), speakers of Dutch from the Netherlands tended to prefer the Moving Time perspective in response to another translation of the probe, naar voren verplaatst.”
Finnish:
“I dont think we in finnish have this saying quite the same. I think you can say ”siirtää eteenpäin” (move forward) but it feels weird idk if anyone says that and i defo would take it as postponing but it would be strange. Usually we would say ”siirtää myöhempään/aikaisempaan” (move for later/for earlier) or ”siirtää lähemmäksi/kauemmaksi” (move closer/farther). I can see both ways but personally to me forward is linearly to further from me.”
Languages with only 1 response
Mandarin Chinese:
Not listed as but also interesting:
“grew up bilingual eng/mandarin chi - it might be ambiguous in english but in mandarin it's a lot clearer, we say things like "2 weeks front" (literal translation) to mean "2 weeks ago/before" or "one year behind" for a year later. also i advocate for just saying what the new date/time is”
Again, this is in line with a study that showed that 85% of Mandarin Chinese speakers adopt the moving time perspective (aka forward = earlier).
Language families
Because there were only so few responses for many languages I tried to look if there were any patterns within language families.
Within all other language families (Romance, Germanic, Uralic, Indo-Aryan) there weren’t any clear patterns. Plus, special shoutout to Malay, Tamil and Turkish that didn’t have any close language relatives (from what I could find in my brief Wikipedia research at least).

Oh god there is more
I also asked if people had worked in a corporate setting before. If you filter out the people that haven’t worked in a corporate setting the results shift slightly towards more people saying it means earlier (69 -> 74%) and for only the English ones from 75,5 -> 78%.
In conclusion
(and this sentiment was heavily echoed in the comments) you should probably just clarify the time when talking to someone instead of moving or pushing it anywhere. Especially when you’re working on an international level. But also, Phil is very clearly in the minority with thinking the way he does in the UK.

I didn't know how to print signatures of a pre-existing book pdf so it's a purely glued spine where I tried (and failed) to align all my papers as straight as I could (passed the gay test lmao)... And then when I went to make the cover I fully miscalculated my spine dimensions and ended up with this giant gap LOL
This book changed my life in a million ways though, and not just for finding-new-hobbies reasons, so I'm infinitely grateful for where I started almost 4 years ago, where I am now, and where I'm going!
(and I've already got my next project all picked out cuz I have ZERO chill lmfao)

But first, let me just say (once again) how much I adored natigail's story and the way they enhanced my favourite cosy game of all time SO much that I'll never see the Valley the same way again.
I'll always walk through town and see Phil's B&B and I'll imagine playing pool with the gang at the Saloon and I'll take a moment at each festival to say thank you to the Adventurer and to the Magician.
And now I'll be able to pick up this book and disappear into this world whenever I need to, because the magic of Stardew Valley finds you whenever you need it the most.
Y'all've already seen how Stardew!Dan and Stardew!Phil kiss when the book is closed, but I just need to reiterate how fucking cool that is and how much Sierra's art elevates the vibes!

Season colours as designated by the B&B owner! I borrowed my wife's fancy markers to add some colours to each season based on a conversation Dan and Phil have in the story, and I'm obsessed with how you can just barely see the colours from the edges!

Each season also has its own corner art, and each month its own icon! I had so much fun matching up icons to themes or events or vibes from each month (even if it made the typesetting and organising for printing so much more complicated lmao!)

I've been bookbinding for several years now, and even though my supplies and my skills remain significantly amateurish, it is one of my favourite hobbies of all time. As I've already said a billion times, this was my most ambitious project by far, and at almost every step I was like...wait, how do I DO this though??? But I'm SO thrilled with the result, and I'm ecstatic for this life-changing phanfic to join my collection!
A note for anyone out there who might consider phanbinding this Stardew AU: consider breaking it up into 4 volumes!!!! This bind would really suit having an independent tome for each season, plus then you can design 4 different covers of ~vibes~! I had already printed everything before I realized it would be so much easier to do in volumes, and by then the signatures weren't organized for easy restructuring so I just had to commit to the full thing lol
(And if you bind this or anything else, I wanna see!)

The 13th annual international gender census, collecting information about the language we use to refer to ourselves and each other, is now open until 13th August 2026.
It’s short and easy, for most participants it takes 5 minutes or less.
After the survey is closed I’ll process the results and publish a spreadsheet of the data and a report summarising the main findings. Then anyone can use them for academic or business purposes, self-advocacy, tracking the popularity of language over time, and just feeling like we’re part of a huge and diverse community.

hes 19, with unlimited power, and he ain’t got a gf. the only time we see him interact with any women his own age is when he’s rejecting like 7 of them rapid fire. he pretends to date pacha in a gag that lasts like 10 solid minutes. listen to me god damnit
Okay, but just in case anyone is coming to tumblr dot com for my hot takes on 20+ year old kids' movies: Kuzco super WAS gay (or at least coded as such) and of course, I didn't get it until I watched it as a gay grownup.
He is played obviously camp and dramatic, for a start, and there is the aforementioned "hate your hair/not likely/yikes yikes yikes/let me guess you have a great personality" summary dismissal of all his potential brides. Then he spends dinner asking Yzma about Kronk ("so he seems nice? He's what, in his late twenties?") and otherwise being slightly obsessed with him.
Then there is the whole Adventure of Doom with Pacha, him being ever huffy about the Kiss of Life, and then the restaurant gag where Kuzco takes to playing Pacha's fake wife and dressing up in ladies' clothing with great gusto (reinforced by the waitress' "bless you for coming out in public" remark when Pacha says they're on their honeymoon). Then when he is finally de-llamafied, we don't see him paired off with the obligatory girl from the lineup earlier, as might otherwise be expected in a Disney movie. Instead he is still single, but goes to found family it up with Pacha, Chica, Kronk, etc, which dare we remark is a very queer trope.
In short, I have no idea how a Disney movie with no white people (all the characters are Indigenous/people of color), a gay king, cross-dressing jokes, and the most offbeat plot of all time actually ever got made (can you imagine the Family Friendly Mouse doing that today? Let us also talk about Kronk because he is a brilliant deconstruction of both toxic masculinity and the musclebound henchman stereotype.) Other than that this was the Chaos Hour of animated movies in the late 90s/early 2000s, and yes.
So yes. There you have it. I will not be taking criticism at this time.

Haiii yes I'm working on a fanbind of Broke Gay and New in Town by @natigail cuz why not bind almost 1400 pages of absolute joy and whimsy and magic !!! The moment I read it I knew I needed it on my shelf.
I just finished a version of the typesetting, gonna do a print and mini-bind to make sure I'm happy with everything before committing lol
This is the most ambitious design I've ever done, each season has a different corner design and each month has its own pixel art by the page number that corresponds directly to the chapter (screenshots below the cut!)
I don't know what I'm gonna do for the cover yet, that's almost always a game-time decision haha (but those portraits might end up as part of the endpapers!!)
