Scared of the Dark - PROLOGUE
Hey, after a looong break from writing i've decided that this is what i should be doing instead of studying for my chemistry finals lmao, i hope you'll enjoy the prologue<3
This day could not be longer. As if waking up at 6AM to school wasnโt inhumane enough, having to wake up at that hour for one of your exams sure was. To top it all off, it was a chemistry exam. You tolerated chemistry but it wasn't in any way something you would do willingly early in the morning. If that test wasnโt like, a thirty percent of your final grade, you wouldnโt even bother, but unfortunately, it was. The feeling of absolute misery was only amplified by the weather outside. As if at least the Sun couldnโt be on your side and brighten up your day a bit, but no. That gusty wind that almost made you lose your balance at the bus stop only reminded you that hoping for a single ray of sunlight in February is asking for too much in San Fransokyo. Well, at least the buses were heated inside.
Getting off the bus physically pained you as the crispy air hit your face again. Your chemistry notes almost got blown away, and as much as you were getting sick of looking at them, they were your last hope of passing the exam. Your hands were freezing cold from holding them in front of you, as there was still a walk from the bus stop to the university ahead of you.
โIf a reaction releases more energy than it absorbs, the reaction is exothermic,โ you read out loud under your breath. โIt basically means it releases heat. Oh, to hold onto an exothermic reaction now...โ you quipped to yourself, your frozen, stinging fingers, that miraculously havenโt fallen off yet, reminded you of how cold you were.
Opening SFIT doors felt like opening the gates to Heaven itself. A wave of warmth washed over you and you sighed contentedly. There was one drawback to this sudden heat though โ the stupid fog that suddenly materialized on your stupid glasses. You were blind as a bat and the only one item that helped you to see also turned against you in that unfavorable weather. You cursed under your breath. For safety reason you chose to stand near a wall, so that you wouldnโt bump into any of the students. After all, not everyone gets the privilege of a good sight.
Being already disappointed in your day, you took off your glasses to clean them up. Your eyes automatically squinted so you could see at least shapes and not stumble into a wall or someone.
โMorning! Prepared for the test?โ suddenly a voice boomed from behind you. Your brows automatically shot up, a yelp escaped your lips, and you were pretty sure you just went into a cardiac arrest. It was a miracle, that the glasses didnโt end up on the floor. Being already agitated, this was the spark that could make you legit punch someone square in the face in the middle of the schoolโs corridor. When you turned around to do so, you were met with someone familiar. At least thatโs what you could deduce, since your sight still wasnโt a reliable source of information.
โDamn it Tadashi,โ you cursed your friend out, โI thought we talked about sneaking up on me?โ a giggle could be heard.
โOh, ha ha. Very funny. Apparently, my misery is hilarious to you,โ your tone suggested annoyance, but you smirked either way. Staying mad at Tadashi for longer than three seconds was impossible.
โHere, let me do it for you as an apology.โ Your hands met as he took the glasses from you and wiped them with a handkerchief he stored in the pocket of his jeans. You on the other hand lowered your gaze on the floor, feeling slightly warmer on your cheeks. โItโs just how he is, just being polite thatโs all,โ you reasoned with your mind.
โTo answer your previous question, Iโll never be ready for chemistry. Thereโs always something that I forgot to study and then I get lost in the notes and-โ you ran your hand through your hair with a growl. Even ranting about chemistry made you anxious. Everyone has their weak spots and your happens to be one of the most important classes on your degree course. Your motivation to push through emerged when you realized that each and every test, every finished semester and every breakdown and tear brings you a step closer to fulfilling your dream. Helping people. Changing the world for the better, making an impact while also saving lives. That is what brough you and Tadashi closer when you first met during the first year. Now, you are just inseparable.
โHey, I know youโll ace it. Remember how you fell asleep on your microbiology book and then was the only one who actually passed the exam? I feel like you just absorb knowledge through your skull,โ he humorously pointed out. It did make you feel like a badass.
โYeah, but this timeโฆ I don't know man.โ when Tadashi gave you back your, now finally useable, glasses you started walking towards chemistry class. โBy the way, how's your work on Baymax?โ you inquired, desperate to change the topic. Baymax was Tadashi's project on a healthcare robot, which you found super cool and also very in-character for him.
โGoing great! He actually blew up on me yesterday,โ he replies as if it was a standard occurance for him, which wellโฆ it kinda was.
โI thought Baymax was a healthcare robot, not an assasin robot,โ you chuckle slightly, โI'm glad my project is not that explosive. At least for now.โ
โFair point, but AT LEAST Baymax is not so easy to lose,โ he dragged out the last word and looked at you knowingly with a smirk.
โHey! I told you it was an accident! I'm not a professional spider keeper, let me live,โ you rolled your eyes at him, but he had a point. It wasn't very responsible for you to lose a spider, that you recently had proved having a radioactive activity. โAnd also, may I add, it probably just hid in a dark corner and died there, no biggie,โ you tried to play it down, but deep down the thought of a spider of an unknown species chilling in the SFIT gave you anxiety.
โOh, but of course,โ just as those words left Tadashi's mouth, the two of you have arrived at the doors of chemistry class.
โI'm crossing my fingers for you,โ Tadashi reassured you and patted your shoulder awkwardly.
โYeah, maybe instead you should look for a nice coffin for me,โ pushing your worries to the side for a moment you sent him a quick smile and entered the class. Here goes nothingโฆ
~-.-~
The sun has already set, basking the horizon in beautiful shades of orange and pink. You didn't get to admire it much, because right after classes you went to the Nerd Lab, muttered a quick โHiโ to everybody and headed towards your little, private room behind matted, glass doors. You stopped in your tracks when you heard your last name being called.
โHello, how's my favourite student doing?โ a male voice boomed behind you. You immediately recognized it as one of your professors who taught you bioengineering. A little unusal subject for your medical course but you enjoyed it either way. You also grew close with the professor. His passion to the subject was truly unmatched and you found it impressive.
โProfessor Octavius, hello. I'm doing fine, thank you. How's your research going?โ you could see professor's Octavius eyes lit up despite his dark glasses that he always wore. You found that odd from the start but guessed that bright minds tend to be like that so you never questioned it.
โOh, that's the reason I was looking for you! I wanted to show you my newest additions to my new project!โ it was heartwarming to see a grown man passionate like this, but unfortunately you had your own project to work on.
โI'm sorry professor Octavius, I'm super busy right now, but maybe tomorrow?โ you felt bad to decline but it do be like that sometimes. No one will stand between you and your precious spiders. The man politely nodded his head and practically ran off to his own lab. I want to be like him when I'm old, you thought.
When entering the lab you were immediately greeted by a glass box standing on a little chair.
โHello my little abominations,โ you politely acknowledged the spiders inside. Putting on some rubber gloves, you approached the box and lifted the lid. Taking one spider you carefully placed it on your hand and briefly inspected it. The night prior you had to conduct an experiment, which included cutting one of its legs off. Despite your resentment towards animal cruelty you did it for science. And now, you couldn't believe your eyes. The spider was complete again! All of its legs were there! All eight!
โThat'sโฆunusual,โ you commented under your breath and blinked a couple of times. You have never seen something like this before and it made you even more determined to examine those spiders. Also, it made you less guilty for handicapping it the night before. Those little creatures were special, that's what you knew for sure.
You wasted no time and turned on your microscope. The goal was to look up close on the spider's joints and look for a clue on itโs incredible regeneration abilities. You took out a glass dish with a see-through lid from a shelf above and placed the spider on it. Then, you picked up the lid with the intention to close the spider up, but the dish was suddenly empty. No way it happened again, you thought to yourself and frantically scanned your surroundings for the little guy. A wave, or more of a tsunami of relief washed over you as you spotted it on the table beside the microscope. You held it down and finally covered it with the lid. That was weird. The spider seemed to be relatively comfortable on your hand but only escaped when you intended to prepare it for microscopic observation.
โA precognition skill? Impressiveโฆโ you muttered while looking for your notebook where you stored all your observations regarding the project. After noting your newest observation in a hurry you went back to the microscope.
A stray piece of your bangs fell into your eyes and you blew it away. There was no stopping until every last inch of the spider wasn't thoroughly looked into and you were about halfway there. Being reliable with your inspection was one thing, but keeping it as stress-free for the animal was another. You tried to be as fast but as precise as you could, but it was easier said than done for sure. The glass cover minimized the spider moving so at least there was one obstacle less in your task.
โI'm so sorry buddy, but I promise I'm almost done here,โ you muttered, convincing mostly yourself rather than the spider. โLet me just take one more quick look and- OUCH, shit!โ a stinging sensation in your hand interrupted your train of thoughts. Quickly pulling away from the eye piece and taking off your glove you glanced at your hand where it was hurting. It was the outer side of it, closer to the thumb. The area was visibly red andโฆ was that a bite mark?
โWhat the fuckโฆโ you cursed under your breath and took a couple of steps backwards. Something crunched under your left boot. Lifting it up you spotted your one that got away. Literally. It was the third, โlost" spider. It seemed like it didn't go far since you have lost him. It was the thing that must have bitten you, by its anatomy you had previously confirmed that the spiders were venomous, so it was capable to bite like that.
โYou little bitch,โ you cursed the creature out, โI gave you a little, cozy house and a purpose and this is how you repay me?โ The clock hanging on your wall suddenly went of, signalising it was already midnight. Which also meant you began to run short on time. Glancing at the bite spot you've decided to worry about it later and for now some disinfectant should do the job, so you could carry on with yours. Taking out a new glove, you resumed your work without thinking much of the event that took place a moment prior.
~-.-~
โHey guys, I hope I didn't leave you waiting for too long,โ you sheepishly apologized to your friends that were pulling an aalmost-all-nighter as well at SFIT and were kind enough to give you a lift after all of you were done.
โDon't worry about it, get inside,โ the blonde girl who went by the nickname Honey Lemon reassured you. She was a real sweetheart and being a major in chemistry you couldn't possibly count how many nights youโve spent with her while she tried to help you study for an exam because of your chemistry-repellent head. โWe are still waiting for Tadashi either way.โ You nodded and entered the car. The heating was on, so again, your vision was restricted by the damn fog. Only an annoyed sight left your lips as you took them off. You felt a pair of dark eyes watching you through the rear view mirror.
โWhy won't you just wear contact lenses?โ the raven haired girl โ Gogo โ that was observing you with a raised eyebrow asked.
โI tried, but I don't know, they're uncomfortable,โ you truthfully answered. You felt weird with an object stuck to your literal eyeball so you chose to stick with the pain that is wearing glasses in winter.
Soon after you finished that sentence Tadashi entered the car and all of you could drive off. Everyone started chatting, joking and catching up with how their day went, but you just couldnโt seem to focus on anything that left anybody's mouth. Your head was pounding, you blamed your long, exhausting day that you had on that. In a desperate attempt to ease the pain a bit you rested your head against the car window. It felt incredibly cold. Well, it was cold outside, but not on the inside, especially with the heating on. Suddenly, you felt a hand on your forehead. Turning to your side you saw Tadashi's concerned face. You raised an eyebrow as a reaction to what he was doing.
โWhoa, your forehead is very hot,โ he commented.
โThank youโฆ?โ
โNo, I mean really. And your face is red too. I think your coming down with something, take some medicine to fight down the fever when you're home, okay?โ classic Tadashi, crossed your mind. โAnd if it doesn't help, PLEASE could I have Baymax scan you? It would be useful information for his database.โ He looked at you with pleading, puppy eyes.
โY-yeah, sure I think,โ you replied weakly. First, because of his genuine concern your heart kind of melted, and second, because you actually felt as if you were about to be ill. Unconciously you rubbed at your bitten hand. It was stingy, and you could almost tell without looking at it that it was inflamed. It was hard not to suspect that it had something to do with the way you felt. What you didn't know was that it was just the beginning.

Scared of the Dark
This is a teaser for series "Scared of the Dark" i am planning to do. I hope it will catch your attention enough to read the first chapter when it's out!! In advance: sorry for any possible mistakes as english is not my first language. Enjoy<3
The tiny eight โ legged creature scurried across the floor as the young woman stood in front of her work station, her back facing the room. She fumbled with some of her gadgets she used to keep track of her little experiment. Well, the only little thing about it was the size of the subjects she worked on. Other than that, it was a pretty huge deal. It was supposed to be her final project just before summer break and coming up with creative ideas under pressure turned out not to be her strongest side. SFIT may not be a luxurious school but to say the students were competetive would be an understatement, which only gave her extra anxiety. They were especially try-harding on her degree course โ medical. So, after a certain potentially biohazardous factory got shut down it was like a blessing from the heaven itself. She hoped to find there some mutated rats, stray cats with two heads and maybe even glowing lizards to experiment on. But the only living beings she found in the abandoned building were spiders. Out of all things, those appalling creatures. Exactly three of them. It was better than nothing, right?
Turns out the answer was no, not entirely. You see, working with them wasn't the problem here. The real issue began when the three spiders she obtained became just two. In simpler words, she lost one. A radioactive, likely venomous spider on the loose at the university.
But don't worry. It didn't go far. It stayed close, as if it was observing, waiting. She worked and studied the two remaining bugs but never expected what came next.
Her brows knitted and her face displayed a focused expression of a goal โ ridden mind. She blew a piece of her bangs away from her eyes as she had to look into the microscope. She was well aware of her lost specimen but decided to let it go as looking for a spider around the whole campus would surely make her seem like a madwoman. She decided to stick with her two loyal subjects instead.
But then, her train of thoughts came to an abrupt stop as she felt a sudden stab in her hand. The only thing not covered by her thick lab clothes, but only a thin rubber glove. She yelped and quickly stood back from the microscope. After taking of the glove, she inspected the area of the pain that continued to spread. The back of her hand was red, as in, inflamed or irritated. Other than that, it didn't swell and she was too stressed by finals to care so she decided to disinfect it and to leave it to heal. She almost forgot about it untill evening, as she started to feel feverish, her back was covered in cold sweat and she herself was uncontrollably shivering.
That night was a restless one, but she didn't wake up tired. She didn't wake up hurt. She woke upโฆ different, changedโฆ
Mutated.
I love everything about this.
