my general opinion on what people should be "allowed" to portray and what topics they should be "allowed" to explore in fiction is that you can make whatever art with whatever themes you want but i'm also allowed to think the way you handled it was tasteless and should've been done differently. my negative opinion on your handling of sensitive topics is the price of admission for publicly showcasing your work. this is not a pro-censorship stance because i am not The Government
"Many white people like to think that racism is really just a Southern problem. Sure, there are ignorant people everywhere, and yes- occasionally- racist incidents happen in California or New York, but those are exceptions. The South was the place that wanted slavery, and the rest of the country fought to end it, right? So how bad can it be once you leave the South?
The answer is very bad. Rodney King was not beaten in the South; he was beaten in Los Angeles. Eric Garner was not choked to death in the South; he was choked in New York. Laquan McDonald was not shot sixteen times while walking away from police officers in the South; he was shot in Chicago. I could, to my great despair, go on for quite some time.
Although white people in our progressive cities and towns may pat themselves on the back for having never called anyone a nigger, many of them also hope we will not notice the strict racial segregation of neighborhoods and schools, the overpolicing of Black and brown neighborhoods, the job discrimination, or the persistent racial wealth gaps.
The concept of race in America was created for the subjugation of Black and brown bodies for the seeming benefit of white Americans. There are no pockets of America that are exempt from this. There is no liberal utopia that got a different memo. The story of hardships that people of color have faced in this country does not end when Black people left the South, and the story of white supremacy doesn't stop at the Mason-Dixon line."
Chapter 4- Mediocre, Ijeoma Oluo
if you want butterflies, you need to live with caterpillars.
i am not being metaphorical, i work in a garden center, stop buying plants 'to bring in the bees and butterflies' and then immediately poisoning every caterpillar that dares to consume a single leaf
you will not get butterflies if you kill all the things that turn into butterflies! what are you doing!
getting a lot of responses to this going 'ok but it would be good as a metaphor though' so I will accept a metaphorical interpretation as long as you ALSO (!) promise to be considerate towards larval forms of insects specifically and biodiversity in general, deal?
I’ve been reading about werewolves on Wikipedia and I just have to say. “Werewolves are warriors that descend into hell to fight demons” kicks unbelievable amounts of ass as a concept
basketball dracula isn't real dude he can't-- *sudden squeaking noises from the shadows*

All I'm saying is that if you have spent more time watching porn of a minority group than you have sharing a meal and conversation with a member of said minority group, then that might maaaaaaybe possibly could perhaps influence how you feel about them and how you see them and your political disposition towards them.
Maybe be aware of that. Or fix it.
I think this is true even of non-porn media. If your primary exposure to a minority group is through fiction/entertainment, it's going to bias you.
I was reminded of this article I can no longer find from early in the Obama administration about how white people think of Black people as automatically "cool" because the only Black people they know of are entertainers.
I liek drawing him……….
As a (white) person with schizoaffective disorder (for those that don't know, this is basically schizophrenia + a mood disorder), I've done a lot of research into schizophrenia and it used to be primarily diagnosed in white women and then suddenly in the 1960s/70s it magically became (and continues to be) most prevalent in Black men. And that's ~*~coincidentally~*~ when it picked up the cultural stereotype of murderer, scary psychopath horror movie villain disease that it also continues to have to this day.
There's a lot more to say here but basically cops wanted reason to arrest and discredit Black men and women during the civil rights era.
Anyway, saw you mentioned schizophrenia, thought I'd say the thing I know (that surely you know more of). Probably every one of these more Black-prevalent diseases has a history like that. It wouldn't surprise me.

Tis on my ever-long and tad bit overwhelming reading list!
I'm not necessarily anti-psych (If these meds make me feel better I'll take them forever), but as with literally everything in this society, racial bias is not absent from psychology and psychiatry. If you have a field that can call enslaved people running away or not wanting to be slaves mental illness, it stands to reason that the same field will still hold on to a bias that Black people are simply "paranoid and crazy" for speaking up against a systemic issue that many white folk don't believe is "that bad" or there at all.
"You're overreacting", "you're crazy", and "it's not that serious" are traditional and violent responses of Whiteness to the calls of injustice from Black people about their experiences.
hey did you watch the philosynoir video on pitbulls? i feel super vindicated for thinking that pitbull hate and the way people talk about them doesnt pass the sniff test.
I hadn't seen it before now, but I have talked about and shared this very topic and in fact many of the sources he uses to draw mostly the same conclusions.
I am someone who is fairly frank about aggression in dogs, being that aggressive behavior in dogs drives a significant portion of my hobby Dog Attack Simulator. I spend quite a lot of time around dogs that do actually want to bite people, and I am constantly a little frustrated with the way people who do not engage in this hobby or profession act like you have to force the dogs to behave this way. Aggression is just as genetic as any other instinct-based dog behavior. The difference is what we as humans consider appropriate forms and contexts for aggression, and what we consider inappropriate.
The American Pit Bull Terrier was created in and for bloodsport. This is not an untrue statement. As a result, many of them are at least somewhat intolerant to other dogs and I find many of them to be pretty bad communicators with other dogs, while also being prone to emotional highs and rough play. This isn't necessarily a bad thing- in fact these are all traits that I find endearing in the pit bull clients I've liked over the years.
They also were intended to be incredibly safe to handle because often times the dog fighters are standing in the same ring or pit as the dogs are going at each other, and need to be able to do so safely without getting drug into the fight or onto the floor- which is an incredibly dangerous place to be as predatory drift is very likely to trigger once you're in that state. As much as humans are omnivorous predatory animals, we act a lot like prey once a different predator has hold of us, and that does include dogs (and is why the most serious maulings often result in death or disfigurement as the dogs tear off pieces and consume them- predatory sequence is real). To prevent this, the goal was to create a dog that would A: fight without stopping B: not be discouraged by pain (we call this "game" or "gameness" and it was the actual point of the pit bull, with dog fights simply being a means to test gameness in a dog) and C: not bite the fuck out of the human pulling it out of the fight once there was a clear winner. Fights were not always to the death- in fact most fights did not end in death even for the loser dog.
But that does not mean that pit bulls are uniquely evil or dangerous or aggressive. As mentioned in the video, many other breeds have been used for dog fighting and many additional breeds have been used primarily for the maiming and mauling and, yes, even killing and consumption of human beings. And yet, while there may be breed bans and heavy suspicion of the safety of those breeds as well, pit bulls seem to be what most people get stuck on and focus on when it comes to aggression and human injury.
To put it simply, the Belgian malinois has been used for years as a police and military dog, is known to be heavily inclined to biting without prompting, exists on a hair trigger, and often delights in biting for the sake of biting. In the world of bitesports, protection, and working dogs, these are traits that are lauded and celebrated. And yet for some reason I have had *malinois owners* who are happy with these traits tell me to my face that they will never trust a pit bull and think they should all be destroyed. I'll let you guess the average color of skin someone with a malinois might have.

When I was 15 I was very negative. Of course I was, I was 15.
But I noticed I was negative. And I didn't like it. I didn't like the way it felt inside to be me, and to live like me, with all those negative thoughts all the time.
I had read somewhere that you could train yourself to be happier. That you needed to force yourself to think positive thoughts, until it became a habit.
I remember those few months of high school where I used to catch myself mentally complaining about something, and then forcing myself to find something positive to think about the person or situation. Again, and again, and again.
And it worked.
It became easier. And I became lighter. It was just nicer to be me, to live my life, to navigate through my days. I still remember the moment I noticed my life had become brighter.
And decades later, it still works. The muscle is still there. Now I know the word is neuroplasticity.
But at the time, it was just a 15 years old girl who was tired to be in the dark all the time, so she made light in her own brain.
IM LOSING MY FUCKING MIND

ok my turn to freak post.. . i am not immune to tomodachi propaganda and im really hungry for anything gas station ever. this is the perfect recipe for me as a starving tftgs fan.
i need to tack on that i did a shitty little pet rita too. please look at her.
i think i said this one before but i remember we used to go to church and one day on the way i just out of the blue asked the car "how do we know god is real? what if people just made him up" and the adults all got super mad at me and gave me generic answers like "we just know" and stuff and my ass was fucking CURIOUS so when church started i asked the Sunday School teacher and she was like "well the bible was written about him" or something like that and i was like "but someone wrote Curious George and hes not real, what if someone made him up too" and she was like irritated but was like "he's a talking monkey of course hes not real, children just like fun stories" or something like that and i don't remember exactly what i said but it was something very close to "but adults like stories too! how do you know he's not made up so because adults want to believe in something too?" and she got SUPER mad and i had to apologize in front of the church but i saw an opportunity so i was like "but no one answered me so i still dont know and i guess you guys don't either" and [everyone] got super mad and none of us could go to that church anymore
the adults were okay to go to church again but me and my siblings had sundays off from that point on and that was kind of a catalyst for the way my brother and sister perceived religion
One thing I've been thinking abt is how would Muppet sex work?
I heard theories about them being an asexual species and having to do some sort of hand manifestation ceremony to get their young Muppets to come alive
but like if we go with them being able to fuck, then how does that work? like do they just rub their null sections and hope a young Muppet spawns during?
idk what you're talking about the Muppets are totally normal talking animals with legs and everything, I assume they just do it the expected way!
(yeah irl they are just. puppets but the whole joke is that people treat them like they're not. anyway you just gotta get creative I suppose!)
