crying hard as bae could cry | Gus & Phoebe | January
Now this was more up their deserted, seedy alleyway. Practically speaking, at least. Neither Octavius nor Phoebe were the least bit interested in babysitting as a living but they both had enough practice at it to make the whole ordeal smooth and enjoyable. Gus should say he felt for the child. It would be the decent thing to do, feel sympathy for someone who had befallen a great tragedy, however small the person was. But the childĀ was tiny. A little boy (Octavius had confirmed with his supervisor) dressed in nice clothes that were probably dry-clean only. It was hard to feel sorry for the child who, on the surface, seemed blissfully unaware of the events that had taken place and the long term effects they would have on his life.
"IĀ remember when Martin was this tiny." Octavius mused, watching the child play in the series of bubbles he had recently blown. He paused to make sure a stumble did not turn into a tumble and changed his previous statement. "I remember whenĀ youĀ where this tiny. Always matching with Hermia because Aunt Mal insisted on making the pair of you twin sets. Though it was easy to tell which were yours. Scorch marks meant Hermia's. A bit dirty but otherwise unharmed meant Phoebe's."
Intern Evaluation: Octavius Pratchett
Weaknesses of Intern:Ā Not nearly quick enough for my standards, but I suppose my standards are pretty high compared to most. This is the welcome desk though, and quick is how we must do things.Ā
Strengths of Intern:Ā He was a rather friendly fellow, though he could use a good little push to get him out of his shell a bit more. He was also a fairly good listener, there were only a couple instances where I needed to repeat myself.Ā
Overall Thoughts:Ā All in all, Mr. Pratchett was better than most of the interns I get sent my way. He did what was asked of him, and I never heard him complain once.Ā

āWell, we doĀ have enough siblings and cousins to populate a mid-sized country āā at IeastĀ oneĀ of themās got to have some degree of musical talent, right? And if not, we can always bully Martin into the job. Poor darlingāsĀ quiteĀ terrified of me.ā
Just imagining Gabe, Elena, Hermia, or even little Martin composing a song in their honor broke his stoicism. The only one he could honestly see composing was Phoebe herself only hell would freeze over before she would commit to that much work. Still, she had the clever tongue for it.

āSo, Gustopher āā Iāve been doing a lot of thinking, and Iāve come to a very important conclusion.ā
āIĀ think we need our own theme song.ā
Octavius laughed at that. It was so his sister. Which is what made it terribly perfect in every way.
"Oh yeah? And what are we going to do once we have one? Get someone to play it everytime we walk into a room together?"
whitehall | gus & rose | january
"Whitehall." He breathed the word to no one in particular. Octavius did not make it a habit of speaking aloud, not even to himself, but he could smell something stirring today. Something about the conclusion felt right enough to voice. He seemed not to notice there was anyone else in the corridor and gave the explanation to the ceiling and walls as if they had requested something further than the statement.
"Normally I would say Richmond to Westminster and venture off from there but no...today is a long sunset of Whitehall, I think."
break room | open
Joelle enjoyed the break room. It was social and lively, an excellent break from the fast-paced environment of St. Mungoās. The day, spent with a fairly inflamed young boy, was hectic. And long. Jo was just happy for a break. The girl got a cup of tea and took a seat near a corner. There was another intern sitting not too far from her. She knew he was reading a book, and common courtesy dictate that she not interrupt, but upon seeing the title, she could not help saying something.
āPardon me, I am quite sorry. I just wanted to compliment your choice of reading material.ā
Here it was! Approached by another intellectual. Surely this would spark life into the hidden social flame that was deep inside Octavius Pratchett...right? The messy haired intern lowered his copy of "Magic and Muggles: A History of Magic in Muggle Folklore" briefly to register who had spoke to him.
"Thank you." He returned his attention to the book.
break room | gus & adrian | january
During his second day on the job, Adrian had found himself in the breakroom at I.M.P HQ rather than the cafeteria at the hospital. Donāt get him wrong, the cafeteria food at St. Mungoās was by far some of the best heād come across, but after spending that morning with complete strangers, filling out mind-numbing record after record, he was looking for someone he was at least a little familiar with to talk to.
Standing in the doorway of the breakroom, a brown grease stained bag in one hand and a coke in the other, Adrian scanned the group of interns, looking for a friend to sit next to. It didnāt take him too long before his eyes fell on Gus, sitting in the corner with his nose buried in a book. Were Adrian someone a little more adept on picking up social cues, he probably would have left the boy alone, since clearly thatās how he wanted to be. But Adrian sucked at picking up on social cues, and hey there was a seat right next to Gus, so why not?Ā
"Yo, Gus!" Adrian called out as he walked towards the other boy. "You decide to ditch the cafeteria too?"Ā
Octavius looked up long enough to put a face to the voice. He gave a short smile before looking back down at hisĀ book. Regardless he did not seem distracted from Adrian nor what he was reading. The oldest of six. He was quite used to multitasking.
"Hello, Adrian. Yes, I brought a lunch. I thought I might be able to eat with my sister but her break is different."
True that. I am the one with the smokes. But Iām assuming thereās a reason why you even considered taking one?
Not sure if Iāve introduced myself. Mason.
Ā "AĀ good traveler has no fixed plansĀ Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā and is not intent on arriving."Ā
"Octavius...not the quote. That's me."
No problem at all. Tough day with the program, or just needed the smoke for the heck of it?
"I just came out for some air. You're the one with the smokes, mate."
There is something cheeky about the way he says it.
Not too much. Iāve learnt to just smoke at home or outside. Placates people a lot more. but some people are always going to be anal about it.
Here you are. Free cig, as promised.
The young stranger looked the man boldly in the eyes as his fingers took the cigarette. The man before himĀ confirmed curious and had a weighty, shifty sort of vibe. "Cheers, mate."
Octavius shifted next to him wordlessly. He let his back rest against the building behind him feeling bigger thanĀ he should.Ā
Before you ask, yes Iām smoking. Itās the main reason Iām outside.
And I take it youāre standing around because you are either appalled by the fact I smoke, or youāre here to join me. Do you want one?
"Get a lot of shit for smoking then?"
Octavius found himself intrigued by the introduction. He held out a hand to accept the promised free fag.

The break room. A place to come and relax. A place where interns from all walks of life can socialize in peace. And then there is that one jerk in the corner, ignoring the people in favor of a book.
st. mungo's welcome desk | the answer man | self para
The morning was jittery or perhaps that was just Octavius. The first day of a new adventure was always s w e e t and fresh. Again, there was honey on his tongue that could not be stirred into mere words. So, no words did Gus form to express how he felt. No words did he form at all in the first half hour but a short good morning and a brief exchange ofĀ introductions withĀ Lady CombsĀ {whose name was honey in its own right}.Ā She showed him the oughts and ought nots of the job inĀ elegant efficiency. He listened in quiet content. Octavius heard yet he retained more than just instruction. Lady Combs herself quickly became an object of heartfelt interest. She took her job seriously, a persona of bloom and summer shone through her like a winking sun betwixt cloud and cloud again. She was the light at the desk of suffering and despair, not that everyone wanted a cheery welcome when they were missing limbs or growing new ones. That was something he quickly discovered. The troubled and the troublesome came through those doors on his first day at the welcome desk. Some, it would seem, were regulars to St. Mungo's by all fault of their own. A man that could not keep his hands away from his neighbors garden of the poisonous and the carnivorous entered to call Lady Combs by name. He needed no direction, he had been pointed many timesĀ afore. There were sorts of all kind and all kinds of sorts. Accidents both tragic and comical. DomesticĀ disputes ending in oddities of magic. Those with dangerous jobs suffering overdue results. ThenĀ there was the incurables. The ones there to be told how to live slightly longer. Octavius could smell the sickness on them.Ā But no matter the who or the what there was one thing that was constant {aside from Lady Comb and her cheerful glad tidings}. It was simply this: One and all came to St. Mungo's for answers. Directions, remedies, or treatments...they were all answers of a sort. Gus was at the Welcome Desk to provide the first of many answers. The most mundane of answers, the harmless factsĀ that would shift only slightly with each case. Level, department, ward.Ā They needed a where and he had theĀ answer.
Octavius Pratchett preformed his task that firstĀ day. He was not, perhaps, as chipper as his Lady director but he put on a smile, moreĀ genuine in nature. They came to Gus but never saw him. Not like he saw them. He observedĀ their panic or their resignation, content to keep the gates of Healers.

No? Iād say āshameā, but Iām glad you didnāt name the poor thing āPicklesā. Ā And naw, I like meat. I donāt think I could really be vegetarian. Uh, do you enjoy the smell of broom closets..?
"No but I know who does, the bizarre little dear. You like meat but do you hate ice cream?"
Depends, is there a hooker involved?
The only response he had to that was laughter. Free, endearing laughter.

Oh its no bother, donāt you worry. And actually, I do have a fair amount of it but alas, that one is not one of my facts.Ā
You donāt happen to have a cat named āPicklesā do you?
"Not really an animal person. Though animals in general tend to come to me. No idea why. Are you a vegetarian?"
