The goal of Transformers: Elite is utilizing the numerous female characters that have been established then dropped over the years to create an exciting, cohesive story. Our goal - beyond getting to squeal over our favorite ladies being BAMF - is showing that there is no correlation between the gender of the characters and the series’ recognizably as part of the Transformers franchise.
On more than one occasion, we’ve said that we look forward to the day Hasbro takes the reins and uses the women already in its possession to the fullest, since we can go back to being lazy nerds then. However, if we’re being honest, we’ve always been a bit sarcastic when we said it. It’s been hard to believe the ladies could ever have the same staying power across Hasbro’s shows and comics that the guys do.
We still don’t think we can say “mission complete” but Windblade #3/Combiner Wars #5 was the first time we’ve ever thought, oh wow, it might actually happen.
Seeing a balanced set of background characters alone was amazing but then, at long last, THE QUEEN returned. While Elita One has technically been utilized before now, she has been combined with another female character on two separate occasions. Her other appearances are minor, widely unknown, or foiled by RL events.
As disappointing as that was, ultimately, now may be the best time ever for her return. The franchise wasn’t ready before.
We’ve enjoyed Nautica and Strongarm. We’re excited for a ladyformer in Rescue Bots and Victorion is going to kick ass! But they only inspired limited confidence in us. Transformers: Elite exists because, while Hasbro has always known how to create fascinating female characters, they’ve struggled to make use of them.
However, in just the last few years, we’ve seen a change. Female characters are sticking around in their stories then, more importantly, they’re appearing other series. They have staying power.
Before now, Arcee and Blackarachia were the only ladies you could count on to reappear. However, in the currently running series, we have Windblade, Chromia, Firestar, Moonracer, Airrazor and Elita One showing up for another iteration of their characters. It’s mind boggling that we’ve come this far.
Transformers: Elite isn’t ready to pack it in just yet! These ladies are giving us hope but we need to see their execution before we render any final judgments.
Nevertheless, seeing Elita One smirking like a badass on her throne inspired us like nothing else. For the first time, we can see a future with an Elita One who is every bit the missile-catching, triplechanger-face-kicking, time-stopping action hero that she was in G1.
