Okay so apparently anxiety meds would solve like 99% of Loid and Yor's problems.
SxF Chapter 136
What if this is the start of a potential identity reveal? Hear me out.
So 2 weeks ago I was thinking that if Twilight went ahead with trying to tranq Yor it would obviously fail and he'd put all the blame on Franky. So my thoughts were that if Twilight starts blaming Franky (or cutting his funding as we saw in today's chapter), what if Franky gets so upset by this, and he cares a lot about his money, that he'll start trying to prove his invention DOES work. Which leads him to investigate why it didn't work on Yor. He's also the one who knows and believes in the existence of Garden so he's already one step ahead of everyone. I can genuinely see Franky being the first one to find out and this seems like a good segway for that.
To me this moment feels like a good opportunity to start heading in the direction of an identity reveal. What do you think?
YOR I'M SO PROUD OF YOU GIRL!!!!
She openly says what she wants
She does it calmly
She does it without any kicking involved
Also she decided to try without more alcohol
I love the dichotomy of this chapter so much. Yor is so aware of the areas she needs to work on to become more emotionally mature and she's so determined to get there.
Enough with the alcohol! Just put your arm around him. You'll get used to it eventually.
It may be foolish, but I'm still holding out hope that we'll see her bridal carry him someday.
Meanwhile Loid is doing the exact opposite. We've reached the point where YURI is doing better than him.
Fucking YURI
Bro is cracking and running low on scotch tape.
Now this is a real confession 😌💕
Our favourite spy is starting to feel cute things for Yor so now he considers her an obstacle, yeah sounds complicated but so is he.
Spy x Family Chapter 136: The Core Fear
Let me talk to you about something I learned recently. People with a mental health condition like anxiety disorder or OCD are not truly afraid of what they think. For example, a person afraid of heights or the dark or germs is not truly afraid of those things. On the outside, fear manifests every time they are exposed to that trigger but in reality, they are afraid of something else, a core fear, buried deep inside.
That's exactly what's going on with Twilight. Let's dig deeper and find out his core fear.
These last chapters, Twilight has been completely out of control. Obviously, being surrounded by SSS agents was a huge trigger for him, BUT I think the possibility of Yor telling Captain Curtis about their previous interrogation was even a bigger trigger. Why? Because that would make a member of the SSS suspicious of everyone close to Yor, which in turn opens the possibility of losing his family. That was the real trigger.
If you read chapter 134, Twilight was actually holding up well under the circumstances. Although the SSS was interrogating him, he remained composed. However, the moment he remembered he had disguised himself as Yuri’s captain to interrogate Yor, he completely lost his nerve. Just look at his face—the man was utterly terrified.
After that, he totally lost it and began to act recklessly. We see Twilight ruminate in a constant state of panic and come up with countless scenarios as well as crazy ideas that would put him at risk such as:
Using force to keep Yor away from Captain Curtis. In Twilight's mind, that Captain is more dangerous than the Director of the SSS.
2. Drugging his wife with a tranquilizer gun IN FRONT OF COUNTLESS SSS AGENTS! Seriously? What was he thinking? If it was any other person and under any other circumstances he would know that was too risky.
3. Starting a fire. No comment on that.
Do you see what I mean? He was not only risking the mission, he was risking his life. That's exactly what triggers do; they make people act recklessly; all to avoid getting into the situation that they fear the most, which brings us back to...
Twilight's Core Fear
Do you want to guess? Let's analyze some of Twilight's fears:
Being caught by the SSS. Nope, it's not being caught by the SSS, nor being killed in action. He had risked his life plenty of times and he knows that could happen to him. It's part of his job.
People discovering his identity. That's not it either. If he gets discovered, he knows he can run away.
War between East and West. Warmer, but that's not it. This, however, is what Twilight tells himself. He thinks this is his biggest fear, but it's deeper than that. We're getting close.
I'll give you a clue:
This was the worst moment of his life. A traumatic event so big he can't even remember it. It was a moment of total despair, vulnerability, and most of all, fear.
When Twilight says he became a spy so no child has to cry, he is sincere about that. However, what he really means is tied up to his core fear: Twilight is afraid of losing everything and finding himself in a situation of total despair, vulnerability, and fear again.
So yes, he'll do everything and risk anything to avoid going back to that. He thinks that if he prevents a conflict between Westalis and Ostania, this will never happen to him again.
And, if we add something to the mix, we can get something even more specific:
If we combine that deep fear with his upbringing, it's easier to see why he has that need for control.
What does his core fear has to do with Yor?
She's the antidote. Their relationship is part of his healing. Yor represents safety and that's exactly what a person like Twilight needs. When you see it like that, it makes total sense that he would risk everything to keep his only safety.
Look at him being vulnerable. He can only do this with Yor:
Do you see it? Yor is the only person he trusts 🥹
And I think he's starting to realize that too:
This small panel is very telling! He KNOWS he's relying on her. And he WANTS to rely on her. And probably he feels ashamed of that need because for many years he has relied on no one but himself.
His struggle with vulnerability is what drives the story forward. I've written about this before here. Slowly but surely, Agent Twilight is starting to crumble but also he's begining to heal.
The Twiyor goodness continues 🥲
First thought that came into my head after finishing this chapter was that the latter part had some parallels to the end of the mole hunt arc; in both cases, Loid not only comes home exhausted from a mission, but his interactions with Yor - that is, him being forced to acknowledge his feelings about her, ends up pushing him to his limits.
In the mole hunt arc, he realizes that he refused to shoot Yuri because it would make Yor sad. While he doesn't explicitly say this, it's obvious that he considers his actions of not shooting Yuri when it was important for his mission, a weakness.
In this chapter, he realizes his confusion about how he truly feels about Yor. Again, he doesn't explicitly say it because, well, that's just how he is, but it's clear he's conflicted about her role in his mission, and ultimately, his own feelings.
Then of course, we have Yor telling Loid that she's happiest when she's able to help him. In the mole hunt arc, she expressed this by doing the chores and such the next day so he could rest, while in this chapter, she helped support him while they walked back home.
It's interesting how Loid seems a bit less open to acknowledging his feelings in this chapter than in the mole hunt arc. While in the latter, he at least admitted to himself that he has a weakness, but in this chapter, as soon as he starts debating about whether Yor is a help or a hindrance to his mission, he shifts the blame for everything onto himself, saying that he wasn't perfect enough, etc (exactly what Yor doesn't want him to be).
If we look back at everything that happened in this arc, namely, him putting himself in danger to protect Yor and also telling the SSS officer that he loves her (without any deception apparently), such uncomfortable feelings must have been a lot for his emotional constipation to deal with. So at this point, when he's on the verge of collapsing, it was easiest for him to default to everything going wrong because of his incompetence as a spy rather than to truly confront his feelings about Yor. But of course, that can of worms is fully open now, so I'm sure he'll have to reflect on it again one way or another...something for him to think about while in the hospital after this 😅
Speaking of which, we had two character deaths in this chapter. Tragic.
(Yuri lost his teeth again too, lol. He really should have a dentist look into that condition)
There were some good tidbits in the Japanese version of this chapter. Firstly was Chloe calling Yor "onee-san." While it's a term used for your older sister (Yuri calls Yor a more casual version, "nee-san") it can also be used to address a young woman, kind of like "miss." I'm glad that Chloe seems to like Yor after their first meeting!
The word that Yor uses when she tells Yuri she wants to "cuddle" with Loid is "icha icha," the same word that Anya always uses when the says "Papa and Mama are flirting" 😂 It means a variety of things in this context - "necking, flirting, cuddling, etc."
Yor dodging the darts without even having to think about it, she's just like 😑 And I knew it wouldn't feel like more than a mosquito bite to her!
I really thought Yuri was gonna get shot by Loid here. But in the end, it was Yor who took him down!
Speaking of Yuri, I like that he kept his development from the previous chapters and didn't revert back to hating Loid again.
I want to say that this is officially the end of the TV station/house party arc or whatever we want to call it, but I've been wrong about that for a few weeks, so who knows! I don't think we'll actually see Loid going to the hospital like Martha said, and him collapsing was just an unserious gag to end the arc with. But who knows? Maybe we'll get a short mission or something with Loid having another flashback in the hospital? Regardless, the next new chapter isn't until July 5th. Typically Endo doesn't take breaks between arcs unless something unexpected happens, so that makes it more likely we'll be starting a new arc next time.
Anyway, quite a lot happened in this arc that will affect the future of the series: Loid saying that he loves Yor (speaking the truth, if we're supposed to believe the SSS officer's assessment), Yor getting more comfortable being physically intimate with Loid, Yuri witnessing Loid's love for Yor firsthand, Chloe and other SSS people meeting Loid and Yor...it will certainly be interesting to see where all this goes!
