College is wild because it really isn’t about intelligence or the ability to understand the material at all. It’s literally just a test of executive function and abled-ness. I had good attendance. I participated in class discussions…possibly to an annoying extent, I got A’s on my tests. When we did group work in classes, it was usually me knowing the answers and everyone else just writing them down from my paper.

But I watched those same people who copied my in-class work and who barely passed tests and who only understood the material enough to regurgitate it, not to expand on it, graduate while I flunked out. Why? Because I didn’t have the executive function to do homework outside of class. That’s it.

when I was a teen dealing with chronic illness, I was just abled enough to go to school and do the work in class. I got As on all my in-class work and tests. I understood the material. when I got home everyday, I was so exhausted I went straight to bed and didn’t get up until it was time to go to school the next morning. I stopped hanging out with friends or having any free time, and I dedicated every ounce of energy to school. but, on the basis of needing to pass out as soon as I got home everyday, I was unable to do homework (I also had missed more days that I was supposed to, but again, I passed every test and hadn’t fallen behind in the material). despite having As in everything except homework, I failed every class and had to drop out of high school.

our education system is structured less around an actually well-rounded education (which would look different for different people depending on their needs) and more around conformity to neuro-typical, abled standards that prepare you for being a worker under capitalism, which itself enforces these standards in the attempt to drain as much profit from the individual as possible. even people who are “lucky” enough to be NT and abled enough to survive in these environments deserve more than to be treated like a renewable resource.

Here's a secret that the school districts and universities don't want you to know. You could apply for an IEP or 504.

Chronic illnesses are covered under IDEA (Individuals with Disabilities Education Act)

For executive functioning issues, if you have a diagnosis, you're also covered under IDEA and section 504.

If you don't have a diagnosis, depending on the school district and their social worker, you may be able to take a battery of tests to show your disability.

And, even if you didn't have one in HS, you can still get an IEP/504 in college if you apply (and qualify)

Education is Not just for NT abled people. That's just what the school districts want you to think. Education is for all of us. The resources are there if we know how to fight for it.

And even if you failed out the first time, that doesn't mean you can't try again. If you work a few years in the middle, your grades from the first try tends to be easier to smooth over with talk of being "more mature and able to balance the stresses of life with schoolwork"

I was talking to a friend who wants to quit her job and just “take care of the house” while her husband works, and through the conversation it was clear that she wanted to do the things she took pleasure in and not do the things she didn’t (so cooking every meal from scratch was a go, but vacuuming was a no). (Her husband is against this, because he also wants to quit his job and separately recognizes his wife is an extrovert who will start to break down if she doesn’t have constant plans with people.)

Anyway, it crystallizes for me what I think the actual issue is here, and why women buy into this, and it’s that we’re starved for leisure. We’re working 40 hours a week, usually at jobs that aren’t fulfilling, and we want some outlet that lets us feel at peace and connected to nature and all that cottagecore.

But that’s not life. Cows are hard. Keeping apple trees alive and fruiting is a chore. There is no ethereal feminine to connect to. We’re just burnt the fuck out, and any work we can romanticize sounds better than the work we’re currently doing.

So instead of depending on our boyfriend or husband to have that well paying job so we as a women can rest and relax (spoiler: a lot of the housewifery isn’t restful or relaxing), how about we fight like hell to get to the world where we all - men, women, non-binary folks, everybody - have more leisure time. Maybe it’s a 25 hour work week, maybe it’s a UBI, maybe it’s a combination of the two. But joy isn’t found in unpaid labor - it’s found in meaningful labor. And meaningful labor doesn’t remain so if you’re trapped in the feminine domesticity because you have no money to escape it when it becomes monotonous and dreary and drab.

Ooh good question! I can't believe I've never thought about this! No they do not. They don't have a uterine lining to shed because they don't grow their babies inside their bodies like we do. But if they DID get periods, their period blood would be blue because their oxygen binding protein, hemocyanin, has copper in it, which makes it blue (compared to ours, hemoglobin, which has iron in it, making it red)!

i think it’s so cool when a friendship lasts so long you’ve both essentially turned into different people. neither of you are into the thing that connected you in the first place. you’ve gone for such different paths in life. you like different books and different shows now; they hate some of the stuff you love and you hate some of the stuff they love. you are quieter now, less angry, more contented; they are more vibrant now, less like the kid you remember and more like the adult you both dreamed they would one day become. and yet, underneath all of that, there is still so much love…  you’ve both changed so much and yet you still understand each other so well and completely, because it may have started over a book or a band or a mutual friend or just complete chance but what connects you now is not as flimsy but steel strong. a friend like that is so special. a love like that is such a enduring, strongwilled thing. it makes me really happy

to clarify about fan fiction

to clarify something chuck said in post about being PRO FAN FICTION, some buds have asked if i misspoke when i said ‘fan fiction is part of the original art’. i did not misspeak. i really truly believe this.

if i write a story and you read it an this moves you to paint a picture of snabe and harriet porber, that WHOLE EXPERIENCE FROM ME TO YOU is its own mixed media piece. the medium is motion (getting up and getting the paints) visual (painting) literary (reading the book in first place and then writing your own commentary when you post about it later). it is drama and performance. it is meditation. it is dance in its own way.

i very much mean this: art does not begin and end on the canvas or the page. it is what you had for breakfast the morning you wrote those words, or the story that stuck in your head after watching a show the night before. art is the buckaroo who was moved to pen a whole five page romance story about your characters having a kind picnic in the part.

we are here to create as we push back against the blank empty void, and we prove love is real every time we fill this blank space with little pieces of us. i will not stand in the way of that, and it is an honor to fill this space with this web of inspiration from one bud to the next. ALL OF THIS TIMELINE is a piece and we are one big writers room. there is no shame in this and it is a group project i am proud to be a part of.

Hey PLEASE be wary of Dr. Gallagher and spread the word. Rylan (testosteronejew on Twitter) got top surgery from her in August. Here's the thread he wrote about his horrific experience.

He had severe complications that were completely dismissed by Dr. Gallagher. She kept telling him everything was fine, that it was because of his weight, and made a joke about him "menstruating" as he was bleeding from a torn incision. When he was rushed to the ER weeks later, he had over half a foot of dead tissue removed. He could have died from the infection (that she blatantly denied he had).

And in Rylan's own words, "My only desire is to keep our community safe. There are so many trustworthy top surgeons in the world. One of them saved my life. Transition is a beautiful process and we deserve safe access to it. I do not regret top surgery. I regret choosing Dr. Gallagher as my surgeon."
