☆ - happy headcanon

Moorhees had a really happy childhood and he is trying to give Rita a happy childhood as well without forcing her into a recreation of his own happy memories. There were other village kids to hang around and play with, and a nice mix of farming duties -- school duties -- playtime, and different activities in the different seasons, and plenty of food to go around (there were bad years on the farm sometimes but his childhood was a particularly prosperous period and the first time he remembers actually going hungry was when he was in his teens, which weren’t as happy a period as childhood for him for many reasons); it was Fuckin’ Idyllic, honestly, especially in context as a corner of the Fallout world :V

As an adult he is easily made happy, too, and he likes simple pleasures like having a beer or a hard cider and going fishing or doing little craft things with his daughter (they’ve done pottery-making and painting and stuff like that which they can make work with or around Rita’s one-handedness; a good craft project involves making a mess) or messing around with animals or whatever

Oh, man. Ah, jeez, that’s, like -- I mean, it’s some complicated shit, right? I mean, I love my kid -- I love the hell out of that kid, you know, if we’re just talking love in general, but. Like, I’m from a small town, you know? Like, I was kind of the village gay and I mean, I’ve been on dates, but mostly with women? And I liked them, like as people, but then I figured out, you know, this whole love thing, it’s probably not gonna happen with a lady, and with guys I haven’t even been on a date -- well, maybe a couple of times, but I’m not real sure if the other guy thought it was a date or not, and that’s not -- I mean, what, are you gonna ask? That’s gonna make it weird either way, like, either it’s a date and now you look like an asshole for having to ask about it, or it’s not a date and now you look like an asshole for having to ask about it, you know what I mean? So it’s, you know, it’s complicated. I mean, I’m sure it exists -- love, I mean, like as a concept and shit, I’m not like one of those old men on the porch with the cane saying there’s no such thing because he was stuck in a shitty marriage for fifty years or whatever, but, like, I don’t know, you know?

Approaching the mayor in what was apparently his current home had worried Moorhees a little bit. (Regarding it being his current home -- well, it was supposed to be pretty dangerous and maybe not the greatest place to bring up a kid, but the rest of the area didn’t seem much better, with smaller settlements being less likely to take in newcomers and also more likely to be beset by the various raiders and gangs and vicious wildlife of the region; Diamond City was supposed to be pretty safe and all, but he wasn’t sure he wanted Rita to be exposed to the blatant social stratification they had there. Sure, back home there was the Patroon and then everybody else, but at least everybody else pretended they were all equals, and snobbery among their own wasn’t really tolerated, much less openly embraced like it seemed to be in DC. It would be better for her to spend some time getting used to ghouls and other types of people and stuff like that, right, instead of living in a place where they’d probably be looked down on for being outsiders.) 

Anyway, approaching the mayor of Goodneighbor had worried him a little, mostly because he was pretty much a stranger and only a little bit because he was worried he might accidentally end up saying something rude and ghoulist or something. (He was still spending some time getting used to ghouls and other types of people and stuff like that, honestly -- they didn’t have any back in Sleepy Hollow, and he could barely remember the last time they did, when he was a little kid and old man Van Allen had moved out after that hunting accident where he fell down the Greater Falls into the mill-pond and got a heavy dose of rads.) Oh, sure, everybody knew the mayor here, and everybody was full of praise for him, but you kind of had to be full of praise for the guy who runs the place, right? But yeah, his response to Moorhees’ inquiry was friendly and polite and shit, a good politician, way nicer than the Patroon usually was (but, after all, Van Rensselaer was kind of a prick even when they were kids, wasn’t he).

Moorhees’ round, beardy face got even rounder with a smile, eyes squinting into little slits above ruddy apple cheeks. “Great! That’s great, glad to hear it, great to get some support. I’m hoping to get around and maybe find some of the people who have kids, like, get them in on it too, you know -- and I mean, the people who don’t have kids can get in on it too, also, of course, it’d be best to get some pretty like, community-wide stuff going, you know -- it takes a village, right, ha! But I wanted to run it past you first, make sure it’d be a good idea, you know. So thanks, yeah! Hi -- “ he added, aimed over the mayor’s shoulder toward his bodyguard, suddenly feeling really rude for having ignored her the whole time.

Pretty good, pretty good! Not great, okay, I’m not the world’s best hunter, I’m not the first one to see the stag or the goose or whatever when we’re out there with the guns and shit, but pretty good.
