the thing with tommy killing arthur is also that tommy wouldn't have killed arthur in s6, he also wouldn't have killed arthur in those four years, he literally only killed him *because* it was very likely an accident. there was never any fratricidal intent on tommy's part (and on arthur's, though i have some thoughts on that) like ever lol no matter how bad their relationship might have turned arthur being dead was never part of tommy's considered strategies for dealing with arthur - it only happened when it happened.

A preview, a sneak peak, because I’m still after a year trying to write this damn chapter:

Quinn was thrilled when they ended up at an Indian place in Shoreditch.

The smell of the food as soon as they stepped foot inside the restaurant made her mouth water. The air hung with warm spices and idle chatter, and a quick exchange with the host had them seated in the back of the restaurant without much fuss.

“It’s none of my business,” Isaiah began, settling into the seat, jacket discarded over the back of the chair, “but, what was that about?”

Quinn sighed, swallowing hard as she stared down into the Chai, eyes flitting over the menu as she tried to sort her thoughts.

As she sifted through years of muddled thoughts, she tried to organize the memories that surrounded Luke.

There were a few that came to the surface. He was a friend of Gianna’s and took a spot at the shop for a few months during her apprenticeship, but she went in one day, one very hungover day if she remembered right, and it was like he had vanished into thin air.

I’m not even sure if this will even end up surviving into the the final wrangling of the chapter but I’m just going to leave it here.

I think the problem with talking about Tommy and delusions is that if he’d started shouting to Johnny Dogs that Ada was dead before they got to Birmingham it would look exactly like a delusion. Same with seeing Ruby and finding that scarf. Now maybe Kaulo planted the scarf for him to find, but he saw Ruby lead him to it?

Not saying he doesn’t show delusional behavior in s5-6 just that it’s very much mixed up with cultural beliefs and now we have concrete evidence of actual supernatural events. Makes things messier and fun.

(Didn’t want to hop on your post and derail it @peakyblinderstho since you’re posting about something specific right now! But it made me think of this.)

Always feel free to derail! This exact subject is constantly on my mind lately. I'm sooo obsessed very specifically with the confusion surrounding delusion versus the spiritual... and how that only makes things so much harder for Tommy! Part of him thinks it's all in his head and another part of him is like "no it's not". I think we see that tension very clearly on Tommy's face when Kaulo first appears in his house, because she looks like a dead person he recognizes, and he INSTANTLY becomes very visibly upset by that, because she doesn't LOOK like a hallucination. She doesn't look like a ghost. She looks REAL and that fucks him up SO bad before she explains she's Zelda's twin. The acting from Cillian there is fascinating. It really to me highlights how off balance being able to see spirits while (presumably?) also suffering from psychosis (at least in the past?) makes Tommy feel. And then when he sees Ada, it's like... this horrible mixture of confirmation of a spiritual gift, while at the same time also probably HOPING it's just a hallucination? Like. My god.

Like also going back to season 5-6 and analyzing things like what he was thinking and seeing, and the potential of a mixture of real spiritual gifting with psychosis, so that the two things actually trigger each other. Like what if in the sanatorium in 6x03, part of Tommy freaking out is because he IS being warned about something legitimate? Halford was someone connected with the sanatorium! His plan to pass Tommy fake x-rays doesn't necessarily work without inside cooperation, and Tommy's surrounded by the hospital staff! One or more of those staff may very well have gone on to assist with deceiving him!

In 6x01, when he panics, we see the lights flicker! He also says it's cold! Polly was there! Was she warning him that Ruby was in danger? Or was it just a coincidence or we as the audience were seeing a hallucination from Tommy's perspective? Kaulo and Esme also make very interesting parallels. Kaulo could have planted the scarf or the scarf could be signs of a spiritual presence! Esme could have staged the grave (by asking one of the people she was with to do it), or it could have been a coincidence, or it could be real and she was telling him something that really happened!
