I HATEEEEE YUNMENG SHUANGJIE <person who's entire blog is yunmeng shuangjie
just made myself sick imagining a demon slayer inspired au of mdzs. in which the jiangs are attacked by a demon while jiang cheng is the only one out and when he returns everyone is DEAD. yes yanli is dead too. but he finds a still alive wei wuxian. who is turning into a demon. who is the only one who survived. who has become the exact same thing that killed them, killed HER. and of course jiang cheng is gonna try and save him but imagiiineeeeee how mixed the feelings must be.
(yes this is basically "what if yanli didn't survive the massacre" with a twist)
you must imagine that first fight where wei wuxian first wakes up as a demon and attacks jiang cheng on sight. this jiang cheng knows how to fight but he is caught by surprise bit his brother (is it his brother?) is pinning him down by the throat (yes i am imagining that choking scene after the fall of lotus pier reversed) and there is no light of recognition behind those eyes (is it still his brother?)
and what do you think brings wei wuxian back in this scenario? would it be jiang cheng calling his name with fear in his voice? would it be jiang cheng calling him by a nickname only their sister ever used? does wei wuxian think, for a split second, that yanli survived and is calling him and that's what brings him back? is it that jiang cheng himself is not enough, never enough to come back for? does he think about it? does it matter?
jiang yanli deserved to do weed
as a rule it's always more interesting when two people who know each other outlive a third person that they both loved and then their relationship becomes So Much Weirder and more emotionally fraught, entangled, and charged when that third person dies
I do think it's interesting how Meng Yao doesn't use his Customer Service Face with Nie Mingjue ever while he's in Qinghe. He uses it with the captain, of course:
He's a little more subdued earlier when he's talking with everyone at Chang Manor--he looks pleasant and disarming (which makes sense, given that these people don't know him and he doesn't want to look like he's talking over Nie Huaisang, who should technically be the authority there on his brother's behalf), but it's not quite so forced.
But when he's actually interacting with Nie Mingjue on the clock, he's neutral to almost stern.
Even when he's trying to convince him to change his mind about something (obliterating Xue Yang on the spot, in this case), he talks to him... not quite as an equal, exactly, but as an adult.
And when Nie Mingjue ultimately agrees with him, he doesn't fawn or thank him or anything, he just gives this businesslike bow of assent.
And politely but firmly orders two guards over himself to help him escort Xue Yang to prison.
...and then once he leaves the building (and Nie Mingjue's field of vision) he encounters the captain and immediately goes into his Customer Service Mode, with his smile getting wider and more strained the more the captain disrespects him.
I just think it's interesting! I'm not necessarily arguing that the way he interacts with Nie Mingjue is his natural way of being; it's possible that Meng Yao simply clocked that Nie Mingjue values plain-spoken competence and adjusted his mannerisms accordingly.
But if this directness is what Nie Mingjue was accustomed to seeing from Meng Yao, imagine how unsettling he must find the obsequious rictus smile that Jin Guangyao wears 24/7 in his father's service.
#NMJ just sitting there going 'what the fuck what the fuck' as JGY 🙂s his way through an excruciating meeting#increasingly upset and failing to connect the dots that this is part of being on the clock bc HIS employees don't do that!#as far as he can tell his erstwhile work spouse got an entirely new personality and he doesn't like it one bit!!!#<prev EXACTLYYYY#and then jgy is just like *smiles even harder* because he can't do anything else he's got EYES on him#mdzs#meng yao#jin guangyao#nie mingjue (via @lgbtlunaverse)
I can tell if someone grew up with a brother or not by the way they talk about the twin prides
I do have to say, from the reread it also becomes quite clear that, while harsh in tone and a bit paranoid, Jiang Cheng is constantly thinking about every single one of his actions. Almost everything he does is prefaced by some sort of ‘he couldn’t be too mad right now,’ ‘he reigned himself in,’ ‘he held himself back.’ Like. Thinking constantly about his actions is a blatant Jiang Cheng character trait
The most obsession inducing trait a character can have for me is knowing somewhere in their heart That They Are A Bad Kid
This isn't necessarily literal. It can apply to characters who aren't children too. But there's something about characters who are either certain of the fact, or terrified of the possibility, that they are just fundamentally wrong and bad at their core
It is also important to me that it is not true. No one is fundamentally broken and evil.
you wanted everything about home except me, didn’t you
[Image ID. Gifs from the Burial Mounds. Wei Wuxian holds a bowl of wine, reaches for lotus sprouts, and holds a pendant from Jiang Yanli. Jiang Cheng looks over at Wei Wuxian with a pained expression. Jiang Cheng bleeds from his mouth as behind him Wei Wuxian clutches his wound. End ID.]
people out there on ao3 writing wangxian mpreg in constructed languages apparently
There is an objective answer to which one of the MDZS characters should be at the club and it’s Jiang Yanli. She was born betrothed to the guy she married. All she ever did was take care of the people around her. If SOMEONE deserves to go dancing and drinking and to go kiss a few boys and get stuck in bad situations it’s Jiang Yanli. 👏Let👏her👏out👏

here's my quick jiang yanli contribution
i need this woman in ways her brothers would find offensive
nvm im talking about it Whyyy do so many people not seem to realise the fundamentals of how wwx functions as a guy and character like time and time and time again he has 2 possible responses to loss/grief/trauma its either
1. absolute & horrific vengeance, which might offer some personal closure but makes everything 100 times worse
or
2. instantly decide that its over and shes moved on, which isnt actually processing anything its just ignoring it and hoping it goes away, which does typically just make things worse in the long run
& that interacts with the ways she conceptualizes familial love as a responsibility to repay a debt she owes. like his number one way of showing he cares is being Useful and if he cant be useful then he just gets out of the way so hes not a Burden. so when she tells jiang cheng "its over and done, we dont owe each other anything and theres nothing i could do to fix this, so im going to move on and get out of your way" she thinks thats the mature and healthy way to resolve their conflict!
& so when jiang cheng, with his (relatively) normal concept of love, hears that as "i dont really care about you anymore and want to avoid you forever" and goes "Oh Okay. fuck me i guess but Okay" thats! respecting his wishes and not pushing his boundaries! PLUS he realises that bringing up how he sacrificed himself to save her would unbalance the debt in her mind and make her feel Obligated to stick around against her will so it would be a dick move to use that as leverage to prove he cares about her. jiang cheng is being a grown ass adult whos Actually willing to forgive & forget, while wei wuxian is being a traumatized 20 year old who hasnt learned that emotional repression is bad for you yet. reconciliation as in being in each others lives again can Only happen when wwx breaks, not the other way around. come the fuck on

Якби могли повернути час
І покохав би тебе ще раз
Якби ми зустрілись не в цьому житті
Можливо, прожили б до старості...

If only I could turn back time
And love you all over again
If only we’d met in another life
Perhaps we’d have grown old together...
