The first Playboy Jazz Festival, August 7th - 9th 1959, at Chicago Stadium.

The line-up included Coleman Hawkins, Ella Fitzgerald, June Christy, Louis Armstrong & His All-Stars, Nina Simone, Sonny Rollins Trio, Stan Kenton and His Orchestra, The J.J. Johnson Quintet, Count Basie & His Orchestra, Duke Ellington & His Orchestra, Joe Williams, The Ahmad Jamal Trio, The Jimmy Giuffre 3, The Oscar Peterson Trio, Joe Williams, Miles Davis, The Dave Brubeck Quartet and The Dizzy Gillespie Quintet.

Despite this incredible line-up, the second festival did not take place until 1979 when it was moved to the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles, where its been held ever since.
