Opening The Spellbook Once More?

Hello hello!

Firstly, heed the question mark in the title, nothing is definite, however I admit I have an increasing passion for Homebrew once again. Its been a long time since I made anything for this blog for you all and I’ve learned a lot as both a player and a DM in the past 2-ish years. I was thinking perhaps I could revisit this ol’ war horse and patch up my horrendously unbalanced old works with the ideas I’ve been working on in my spare time.

This brings me to a handful of questions. Firstly, will there be enough demand for this blog to re-open? Of course, that’s up to all of you and if y’all actually do want some new homebrew then I’m absolutely willing. Second, not sure I liked the format I used to use, and I worry about people takin’ my good ones and posting them elsewhere. I actually found my own stuff hanging around on Pinterest a few months back and it was admittedly flattering but still irritating. I don’t like having to slap a big ugly watermark on my free to use homebrew stuff but I cannot think of a smarter alternative. Third, if I did start this up again I don’t think I’d be able to keep up with regular posts since I’m a student and I have a job and I’m very easily distracted. At the very least it’d prevent me from burning out and quitting though!

Should you read this, feel free to let me know what you think! Also this is a bit of a personal request from me but if my old homebrews have affected a campaign, either your own or one you’ve been in in any way, I’d love to hear the stories!

That’s all, I’ll think about it more but I’m not 100%. Might look into a new logo for the blog too. Thanks to all’a you for staying followed despite the silence!

Hey, I am always open to new homebrew stuff and I am happy you wanna try again.

At first I want to say credit where credit is due, if you need to watermark your stuff then it needs to be done. You can also put your stuff on dmsguild if it is for dnd 5e; this way you can have an easy way to control the access to your brews and you cand set a price tag on every item if you like.

And second: if you need more time for making brews due to work and study then take all the time you need. Thats ok, we will be here.

A Year-ish Later

Hi! I’m not dead! Mostly!

I was bored and opened up this blog and started reminiscing. Its been near-enough a full year since I stopped posting on this blog now, and some of you may be wondering “Hey, idiot, why did you stop?” Well! There’s a few reasons! Firstly, like, all of my stuff was unbalanced, pretty badly, to some extent. Either very underpowered and useless or overpowered and game-skewing. On top of that, half of the archetypes I didn’t really want to make, but I said I would make one for each class and so I did. For those of you that dislike the Rogue, Wizard and Fighter archetypes trust me when I say I don’t blame you. I think my Monk, Warlock and Bard ones were okay though.

I wanna thank so many of y’all for, even way way after I stopped posting, following and liking this blog anyway. I think when I stopped I was at like 1,500 followers and now I’m at 2,600? Seriously you’re all great, I’m glad you found things you liked in this shitstorm!

Seeing this post now, you might be thinking I’m coming back. Ehh sorry but, no. I won’t delete the blog, it’ll still be here, but fact of the matter is I’m not good at homebrewing, and after being in several D&D servers I learned that people will aaabsolutely rip you to shreds if something isn’t balanced. There’s also a constant lack of motivation in my life derived from illness based apathy that stops me from wanting to run a blog with consistent content. On the other hand, what I am half-decent at is running a campaign, so for whatever cursed reason you think that I am a good person to talk to for ideas or advice or any of that stuff, do feel free to message me on this blog, I will probably reply in a day or two.

I didn't see your post talking about ask/reblog/reply, so I'm sending again. About your ring of pride. I was thinking in putting some kind of penalty as the user loses hp, as if it was losing its pride in the 1v1. Do you have any idea?

Ah that sounds fair, pretty good idea. I’d say maybe once you’re below half of your HP, you start rolling attacks with disadvantage. If you’d rather use temporary bonuses/minuses instead, maybe for every 10% HP lost, -1 to attack rolls, or something along those lines, it’s an idea it isn’t really very balanced so go nuts!

Could you give any advice on creating a class based on mutations? I have this woke thing sorta worked up with elixers, but that's... Honestly as far as I've gotten.

I like the idea, but I definitely see where you’d struggle with it.

Here’s a few ideas that might help:-you could give the option to prioritise elixir potency/duration-Maybe give options to make elixirs to gain abilities from certain types of enemies-Being able to make elixirs for allies to use, like how artificers can enchant objects with spells?

Honestly I don’t have much myself, mainly because there’s a lot you could do with this. There’s plenty of potential though so keep at it!

Hey, first time GM here. I have a few players who are struggling to make interesting characters and I was wondering if you could offer any advice or give some examples of characters you have interacted with. I'd also like to know how I can encourage player characters to bond or how I can get them to develop their characters. My campaign is very story oriented so I'm trying to include the player characters as much as possible. Sorry if this isnt the kind of question youd expect, thanks in advance

No problem! Its a problem a lot of GMs have. I’m lucky my players made opportunities for themselves to develop or I’d have more problems like that.

First of all, for a character to be interesting (by my standards at least) your players are gonna need 3 main things: Personality, Backstory and Motive.

With no personality they’ll end up being more of a player avatar than a character. It doesn’t have to be a stand-out eccentric as can be type, hell it can be edgy and dark or even just an asshole (though be careful of that last one in case the player starts becoming their character).

Backstory is important for you and for them. Once they have their backstory, make sure it has a place in your world. Tabletop RPGs are a story told by players AND the GM, its important for them to respect the world you have in place, but also important that you respect their character’s chapter of the story too.

Motive is arguably the most important. Usually part of the backstory, it tells both you and the other players why this character is doing what they do now. Do they need money for family or friends? Do they need to avenge someone? Is there a curse that forces them to stay away from their home? Of course in a party there’ll be clashes of ideals, but that’s not a bad thing, it’s an opportunity to develop.

As for encouraging your player characters to bond, you can’t force your players to and in the end if they do or don’t its up to them. BUT, there’s a few things you should know that’ll up the chances of them being interested:

-1st of all, let the players get into character. Its a Role Playing Game, and (I doubt you’re this kind of person but for everyone else reading) don’t make fun of players for role playing. I’ve been in sessions where I’ve been nervous to get into character because I felt as though I’d get the piss taken out of me for doing so. Its discouraging as hell, moreso than you’d expect.

-2nd of all, give them reasons to bond. They’ll experience both the good and the bad of the world through their adventures, sometimes they’ll need to comfort each other and sometimes they’ll need to vent. When players realise that one character is upset/excited etc. they’ll start asking about it.

-3rd, consider their motives. Why does each character want to stay with this party? Are they obliged to, or do they want to? If so, why? Do they like the other PCs or do they just respect their abilities? Etc.

This ended up being a much much longer reply than I expected. At the very least I hope all of this helps! If you need any more advice feel free to send an ask or PM, I don’t mind. Have fun with your campaign anon!

I really like your content and I have a question about your contest. Would you be willing to do like a superhero based class?

Mmm... Depends. If its based on a specific character or similar to one then no. I know infinity war just came out and everyone's obsessed with it as they are every marvel film and want to play as their faves. If it’s original then I’ll considering, but like I said it really depends on what you’re asking for.

That makes total sense now. What I was going to have it for would be a mini boss type enemy to have and use this ring against the party. Making the boss just strong enough to knockout a player or two before dying. My intentions with this are to make the party afraid of the creature, but to also have them think outside of rhe box on how to deal with it.

I’d like to change the lust ring, so that if the person is bi or pan, the ring gives +7 when the weather is initiating the charisma, but a -7 to resist charm/charisma saving throws

Actually, that’s pretty creative in itself. Fair enough! None of my PCs are so I didn’t really put much thought into it. I like the ruling though, so if need be I’ll use your idea. Thanks!

Looking at the ring of lust, modifiers aren’t really in the spirit of 5e. This edition tries to limit the amount of math done by introducing advantage/ disadvantage. I would recommend having advantage on opposite gender and disadvantage on the same. This way its easier to keep track of, and advantage equates to a +5 so it evens out anyway.

That’s fair enough, I suppose I was just tired of using advantage/disadvantage for everything. In the end its your choice to change it if you use ‘em, if you think that’s better then fair enough! And yeah, I guess it is easier to keep track of too

Great idea for gift/lure for warlocks with the corresponding Fiend patron.

Or maybe a shape-shifting Druid becomes more inclined to a specific animal. E.g. an x% chance to become this beast instead.

Question: Is the mounted movement speed increase an action/bonus action? Because if not then I think Reliable talent+expertise would allow for multiple assured increases in a single turn, which would be kinda crazy

You raise an excellent point, I didn’t really think about that. That’s part of why I made the risk of it failing if you try more than once. For the sake of balancing it’s probably best to leave it as an Action.

Because people asked for more items, here are more items! They aren’t magical mind you, but I’ve had them made for a while and my players managed to completely miss all of them, so have fun with them!

EDIT: It occurs to me I never wrote down the range of these weapons when I made them. I guess the Longbow and Heavy Crossbow would have the same range as they usually would, while the Harpoon Gun likely has a range of 100/400.

So, I made an archetype for a friend and his Bard. He wields a cello, and I got an idea similar to the Hunting Horn in Monster Hunter. Also, a musical Smite at level 14 basically.

It’s for a not-super-serious campaign so if you’re expecting something serious out of this post then uh, don’t.
