January 18, 2021. New York

Police made two demonstrations violent by charging, injuring, and arresting people at protests for police accountability and workers striking for a $1/hr pay increase. Over 30 people were arrested at the two actions, double the number of arrests of white supremacists who stormed the Capitol in DC.

The Teamster workers arrested have since all been released and are striking again.

NYPD PBA tweeted this the same day they beat and arrested people demonstrating for Black lives and for higher pay.

One of the tattoo artists under Kat’s employ did a Q&A on IG and he was asked if he worked with dark skinned clients. His response was to say he did not because his work wouldn’t look good on dark skin due to the tattoo style and technique he uses.

Another tattoo artist saw this and sent him a private message. This message was completely polite and professional. They very respectfully said “hey, this answer is not ok. It contributes to the culture of tattoo racism and alienates black clients. If you’d like to know more I’m available to talk about it.”

In response to this, he blocked them and then put them on blast on his socials for tens of thousands of people to see.

Kat decided to reach out to the tattoo artist who called him out and this was her response

Kat then made a 12 min long video dismissing tattoo racism and saying that it’s impossible to do white or color tattoos on melanated people because “that’s just science” and we need to focus on “real racism”

So that’s the situation, now I’m going to commentate on it. Essentially what this man is saying is that he turns away all brown skinned people At the door. He doesn’t even try to accommodate or work with brown skinned people at all and is saying “well my tattoo pigments don’t heal well on darker skin.” And kat is doubling down and saying that “science” means brown skinned people have “muddy” tattoos. This way of thinking isn’t based on science. It’s literally just racism and other tattoo artists are telling her this. This idea that you “can’t” do things with black skin only lends to a culture of racism that says it’s ok to not ever try, to not ever develop techniques that do work with black skin. Dark skin is never going to look the way light skin does, but that doesn’t mean you can’t do any and all tattoo styles on it. You have to learn and develop these techniques and there are people out there who absolutely are doing that. So this kind of language and excuses are nothing but racism.
