On The Flipside | Slater
Those times when Slater’s friends had managed to drag him out of bed long enough to step outside he’d managed to scour all of New York on his skateboard. Weaving seamlessly in and out of the busy streets headed back towards Brooklyn after a day fucking around in Central Park or nearly getting hit by cars for lying in the streets at three in the morning stoned taught the brunet the ins and outs of the city. The greatest place for a plate of curly fries when he got the munchies, the museum with enough hidden corners he could get his hand up a girl’s shirt unnoticed and who’s got to be working the shift at the skate shop to get him a discount. It all led to the discovery of that little Chinese joint tucked away into the corner of New York. Hidden away from the bustling city lights, it consisted of two floors; the bottom floor was purely food and the cash register while the upper level was a secluded downscale cafeteria made up of a random array of tables and chairs with a bathroom hidden off to the corner. All of which he’d rambled euphoric thoughts of as he led Eli to the place.
“It’s a fuckin’ sanctuary, bruh,” Slater slurred as they entered the place, holding the door out for Eli. His stomach was immediately grumbling at the sweet smell of General Tso’s chicken that seemed to carry over the humid air. He smiled at the frail old Asian woman behind the counter so used to his face she knew him by name, his fingers picking up a plate as he started shoveling food onto it. “Seriously though, try one of these.” Slater pointed to what he assumed to be the egg rolls, his wrist busy rubbing at his heavy eyes.
Eli listened. He was always good at listening and even though Slater wasn't facing him he kept glancing back over his shoulder in an attempt to include him still. It was nice to be honest. He was perfectly content with watching Slater's hands fly about as he talked with huge enthusiasm for the little place he'd managed to find while Eli himself tried desperately to not let his mouth salivate too much considering drooling everywhere when going out to eat was sadly quite unattractive. He almost felt bad for betraying the Red Dragon so quickly, yet there wasn't much he could have done- not much more anyway. He could have quite possibly been their only revenue so for that he let it slide. Eli decided he'd try and chide himself later with a stomach full of heaven. That was the only part of this place that he couldn't yet prove- the quality and taste of their food. Only it wasn't actually the best quality stuff that Eli liked most, a little grease was more than acceptable and as long as it was neat he didn't mind. What he couldn't stand was ridiculously tiny portions for stuff that tasted too nice and too clean to be New York takeout. On the opposite end of the spectrum was the microwaved-probably-came-out-of-a-freezer-after-a-few-years crap that was sloppy and had no flavour at all.
Damn he needed to get his noodle on. Seemingly only a few moments after they'd set off Slater veered off toward the place in question and Eli peered up at it "Mhm, sure sounds like it" he murmured vaguely and ducked in when Slater held open the door "Thanks" he muttered quietly as the warmth of the place hit him in the face. Then the smell. He watched Slater's familiarity with the joint with earnest and smiled, his ears and nose pink from the cold. He copied what the 17 year old in front of him did, picking up a lovely warm plate and staring down at everything the place had to offer. He quickly located his chicken chow mein with bean sprouts, then taking it upon himself to grab a couple of egg rolls that Slater suggested. He turned on the spot when he'd finally finished piling up his plate, two chopsticks drowning in a sea of food and soy sauce.

A lazy smile crept up on his lips at Violet’s mannerisms. The way his hands kept wringing around inside his jacket pockets, eyes everywhere and voice barely leveling off. He really wasn’t much different outside the classroom than he was in it, Slater figured, minus the lack of dress pants and a tie. “Just two friends eating together, right? Unless we decide to get naked.” Slater chuckled. He wasn’t all too worried about exactly how he was behaving in front of Mr V because he was 1) too high to really give a shit and 2) he knew Violet was cool. The dope kind of teacher who told stories that amused the brunet and apparently had favorite Chinese places.
Slater knew Brooklyn a little well for a teenage boy. He knew the ins and outs of what he liked to call his city from every crack in the sidewalk to brick on the buildings. And trust a street-smart seventeen year old punk to know at least ten fucking amazing Chinese places in Brooklyn alone. Slater nodded at his ginger Calc teacher. “There’s this place like… right around the corner. Guarantee the best spring rolls you’ll ever have, bruh.” Slater explained, motioning for Mr Violet to follow him as he started to lead the way.
The stupid smile on Slater's face made Eli twitch his lips upward nervously, he raked a hand back through his hair the silver band on his left index finger glinting in the Thai food place's bright lights as the sky above Brooklyn slowly darkened. Eli watched one street light down the block slowly blink into life. He tugged absently on the sleeves of his ridiculously big jumper underneath his coat, it was burgundy and clashed horrifically with his hair tiny little patterns in orange, white and blue threaded across the chest of it and it had a few holes here and there. Nearly all of them made by cigarettes. It was definitely his comfort clothing but how Slater was managing to make him so uncomfortable while wearing it was beyond him. His grin jarred a little "Aha yeah" he smiled instead "I suppose". He gnawed on his bottom lip, already wanting to bury his hands back in his hair for some kind of purchase on the situation because he honestly felt like he had none. At all.
If anything Eli knew that he'd be fed well. Slater was a genuine Brooklyn guy and even though Eli'd been around NY for a good 8 years he knew that it'd be nothing compared to someone Brooklyn, born and bred. He himself came from New Jersey, although not that far from the city itself was considerably quieter and homier. And boring. But Eli was bad for that, he hardly had any back up places considering as with everything he was always stuck in his old ways. He barely managed to listen to anything other than the music he'd liked back in College or maybe even High School. He'd always had the same apartment, better cheaper places became available but the hassle of moving and the big burn of a dropped iron on the linoleum in the kitchen (he was definitely not getting his deposit back) spurred him to stay. Eli liked familiarity and routine and he was pretty sure his body was so used to being sustained on Chinese food and pizza he'd rupture something if he ever dared to even try to cook anything. "I'll hold you to that" he smiled and tilted his head as he followed behind the brunette, weaving through the crowd at a thoroughly New Yorkan pace.
DAILY DOSE OF MATH - e (Euler’s /oy-lers/ number)
Our Universe is ruled by a list of mathematical equations - many of them involving constants, such as Pi, Planck’s Constant, g, and e. But what is e? Everyone associates it with math, but many people have no idea what it is.
Usually, e is defined as:
While that may seem really fancy, the concept behind it is fairly simple. As the value of n increases in that function, all the way to infinity - your answer becomes closer to e. So if you plug in 1,000,000 as n - you will add a relatively small value to 1 (because 1/1,000,000 is so small) and then it will be raised to the 1,000,000th power! While this may seem huge, the value is still close to 1 - so multiplying it by itself will not increase it’s value by much. e is approximately equal to 2.71828.
Sometimes called Euler’s number, e was first studied by Leonard Euler in the 1720s - though its existence was known over a century beforehand. If you are familiar with logarithms, e is the base of the natural log (ln.) Most commonly, e is found when dealing with compound interest - the interest starts off at a low amount but gradually increases.
If you have taken Calculus, a fascinating note is that the derivative of ex is, that’s right, ex. Because of it’s interesting exponential growth shape, ex is it’s own derivative!
e also makes many appearances in Nuclear Science, because the gradual behavior of a substance’s half-life can be explained very well using this constant. Quantumaniac
