every day my fear grows that the only difference between "good" and "bad", to most people, is whatever they're personally willing to live with. i'm afraid that morality is subjective and that the concept of morality is being abused to oppress others.

more often than not, i see people - no matter their belief system or political leanings - use "good" and "bad" as replacements for an "in" group and an "out" group - using these labels to justify inhumane treatment towards people that they feel "deserve" it. it's not about good and bad.

it's about identifying and labelling socially acceptable victims, while absolving themselves of all guilt by labelling themselves as paragons of morality that can do no wrong because *all of this is for the greater good*.

it is healthy to doubt yourself. necessary, even. because if you have no doubt in your mind that you are not capable of wrongdoing, you lose all capacity and opportunity for self reflection and are at risk of becoming the very thing you claim to despise.

i could get into it more in greater detail, but i fear that this is already going to be misinterpreted by people who aren't willing to engage with the content in good faith

a lot of people act like bad self esteem is a purely internal problem that can only be fixed internally, which i feel has some degree of truth to it - but i rarely see during these discussions the acknowledgement of how our environments play a large factor in shaping we see ourselves.

being raised by narcissistic parents, or being surrounded by bullies/fake friends who do nothing but tear you down with backhanded compliments and constant passive aggressive statements attacking your character, eventually you might start getting gaslit into believing that the things they're telling you are true and that maybe you might even deserve the way that they're treating you.

bad self esteem doesn't generally come out of nowhere. sometimes it is the product of a systemic/social heirarchy that is designed to keep you down no matter how many times you try to claw your way up. it conditions you, wires you into thinking that you aren't good enough and that you deserve the mistreatment. plus, constantly being treated like you're subhuman is bound to affect anyone's self image eventually, in some way shape or form.

working on yourself is always a good thing, but lasting change imo is only truly viable if you also change the environment you're in. you need to break the pattern. it is easier to build yourself up when you don't have people around you tearing you down all the time.

honestly the hyperfixation on bad self esteem being a purely internal problem can sometimes get borderline victim-blamey to the point where it's almost made out to be a personal failing or flaw of some kind.

i'm not speaking to all cases, and i certainly don't mean for any of these things i've said to be generalized; but speaking from my own experiences, i just thought that this was an angle worth thinking about.

sometimes, the reason you dislike yourself so much might be because you are surrounded by people who are actively trying to make you feel that way about yourself for their own benefit. it is important to recognize this and remove yourself from the situation instead of immediately turning to self-blame and feeling like a failure.

do not mistake being failed for being a failure.
