Wowee, all the Never Trumper Republicans who earned cool street cred by reinventing themselves as “liberal” pundits are really showing their asses on this whole Roe debacle, huh.
Let’s start here, shall we?
Steve Schmidt is a former lifelong Republican operative whose main claim to fame was masterminding Sarah Palin as John McCain’s running mate. Come Trump, he finally decided that was a bridge too far, and is the co-founder of the Lincoln Project, which ran never-Trump advertising material during the 2020 elections and has continued to target the seditionists who voted to overturn the results, even AFTER the January 6 attack. I’m not going to say that there is no value at all in these efforts; after all, the vast majority of the Republican party still has their lips surgically attached to Trump’s shriveled orange rectum. It does take courage to go against the crowd and reject your previous opinions, so sure, they can all have some genuine credit for doing this. But this is a galactically, mindbogglingly, unbelievably bad “both sides!!!” take that doesn’t have the defense of being the smallest bit correct, and it’s even more depressing that the majority of the replies to this tweet agree with him.
Children, the story of unabashed right-wing Republican fuckery with the Supreme Court starts all the way back in 2000, with a certain case called Bush v. Gore. The closest presidential election in history did not produce a clear winner thanks to ballot fuckery in Florida (quick, everyone look surprised that it was Florida!) Despite Al Gore winning the nationwide popular vote by a narrow majority, Bush v. Gore ordered a halt to the ongoing Florida recount and decided that George Bush had won the Electoral College, and thus, the presidency. This happened at the instigation of the Florida Secretary of State Katherine Harris, a Republican, even though later analysis found that a full statewide recount would have confirmed Gore won Florida and thus the presidency. As a result, in 2005, President Bush nominated Samuel Alito to replace Sandra Day O’Connor, the first woman to serve on the Court. (This was after he had originally nominated Harriet Miers, a Texas lawyer with very few qualifications aside from being a good buddy of Bush and viewed as a reliably malleable conservative mouthpiece – in short, the first Amy Coney Barrett). Bush was forced to withdraw Miers’ nomination and replace her with Alito. John Roberts, another Bush nominee, also joined the Court at this time, replacing Chief Justice William Rehnquist.
So first stage here: Bush loses the popular vote AND even the state of Florida, but thanks to Supreme Court intervention and the Electoral College, he becomes president anyway (gee, it’s funny how often the EC, exactly as it was designed to do, benefits conservatives and in the modern era, Republicans). He nominates Alito and Roberts.
In 2008, Obama became president, winning – for a change – both the popular vote AND the Electoral College in a landslide. He nominated two justices, Sonia Sotomayor and Elena Kagan, two well-qualified women who currently make up two of the three liberal justices on the court. At the time, they joined Clinton appointees Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Stephen Breyer, Reagan appointees Antonin Scalia and Anthony Kennedy, Bush 1 appointee Clarence Thomas, and Bush 2 appointees Alito and Roberts. However, my friends, this is where the Story of Republican SCOTUS Fuckery REALLY kicks into overdrive. Hang on.
In 2010, the Democrats lost the House in the midterms, and in 2014, they lost the Senate, thus beginning Mitch McConnell’s rule of terror as Senate Majority Leader. Aside from blocking every single Obama initiative and doing his best to ensure that any and all legislation that might actually benefit the American people went to die a slow death, McConnell had his eyes on the prize: seizing the Supreme Court for a generation, thanks to the Republicans’ accelerated strategy of packing all levels of the bench with hard-right Federalist Society and John Birch Society activist wingnuts who were determined to remake American jurisprudence in their own horrifying originalist image. Since at this time, the issue of the judiciary was largely a non-starter for Democratic voters, this evil plan did not encounter much resistance.
Anyway, in February 2016, Scalia finally died. The presidential election was a full nine months away, in November, but McConnell refused to even hold hearings for Obama’s pick, Merrick Garland. He just wouldn’t fill the seat, arguing that it was an “election year” (please remember this argument later) and it wasn’t valid for a president to have a pick before then. Of course, McConnell’s gamble paid off when Donald Trump, despite losing the popular vote by over THREE MILLION VOTES, won the Electoral College and became president. He immediately appointed Neil Gorsuch to fill Scalia’s seat. Gorsuch was a wingnut, but he was at least superficially qualified and had an actual legal philosophy. Like all of Trump’s SC picks, he lied to the Judiciary Committee about whether he considered Roe to be settled law, but at least he was a real judge.
The veneer of remotely sane choices was, however, not to last. While McConnell jammed through unqualified right-wing nuts to lifetime appointments at all levels of the judiciary as fast as Trump could pick them, in 2018, Justice Anthony Kennedy announced his abrupt retirement under mysterious circumstances. His son had some still-unexplained connection to money launderers extraordinaire and top Trump financer Deutsche Bank, he stepped down, and now the gloves were off. Despite being a Reagan appointee, Kennedy was generally regarded as a moderate swing vote, and wasn’t a hard-right neocon. Trump and Company fixed that quickly by nominating Judge Beer Can Rapist… sorry… Brett Kavanaugh, who was the wingnut they were dreaming of. Despite making a spectacle of himself in his confirmation hearings, sniveling and crying and claiming he just couldn’t remember what happened in college, and being credibly accused of sexual assault by Christine Blasey Ford, the Republicans didn’t care. Nah. After Kavanaugh promised Susan Collins, the Republican senator from Maine who was doing her usual thing of being Concerned, that Roe was settled law, she voted to confirm him. Oops.
So then, in Septembr 2020, RBG finally died at the age of 87. The right wing almost wet themselves with glee, while the dirtbag left – who tends to treat any and all Democratic women as if they personally murdered Bernie Sanders in a woodchipper – instantly blamed her for not retiring earlier. Because you know, a feminist icon who argued (and won) some of the most landmark cases in women’s and gender rights, and one of the most brilliant and accomplished jurists ever nominated to the bench, was obviously to blame for not quitting her job earlier, even though the Senate had been under Republican blockade since 2014 and RBG had still been in perfectly good health at that time. HOW DARE SHE NOT SEE THE FUTURE AND QUIT NOW!!! HORRIBLE! TERRIBLE! TARNISHING HER LEGACY!!! Clearly she should have left six years ago, because obviously McConnell would have given her successor a fair hearing and there’s no way that relying only on one elderly justice to survive multiple bouts with cancer to protect the civil rights of an entire country can backfire. Nah, forget all that sexism stuff, this is RBG’s fault alone for not quitting a job to which she had a lifetime appointment and was still more than qualifed to do. Oh, and at the time, nobody was yelling at BREYER to retire, even though he was only a few years younger. He likewise refused to do so until just this year, clearing the way for Ketanji Brown Jackson’s nomination. Breyer was a fine jurist and served well, but he wasn’t RBG. Yet something… let’s see… being a man…. stopped him from being subjected to the same WHY DIDN’T RBG RETIRE NOW!! drumbeat.
Of course, because Republicans have absolutely no principles apart from the ruthless pursuit of power, and even though millions of people were already voting in the November 2020 election, Mitch McConnell forgot everything he had ever said about not confirming SCOTUS justices during an election year. RBG died on September 18, and the GOP-controlled Senate jammed Judge Handmaid, Amy Coney Barrett, onto the bench on October 26, barely a week before the November 3 general election. So let’s see! That makes five justices – Alito, Roberts, Gorsuch, Kavanaugh, and Barrett – appointed by a Republican who lost the popular vote and yet, thanks to the Electoral College, became president anyway. Two of them (Gorsuch and Barrett) were forced onto the bench after deliberate manipulations by McConnell to make sure that Democrats couldn’t fill the seat at any cost. With the exception of Roberts, they all just voted to overturn Roe, and after all three Trump appointees assured the Judiciary Committee that it was settled law. They joined Thomas, who is currently embroiled in one of the biggest judicial ethics scandals in the history of the Court, but nah, who cares about that.
So anyway, we now have the RBG Is To Blame For This crowd out in force, because losing women’s rights has to be a woman’s fault somehow, as if that argument remotely makes the smallest amount of sense. Not content to leave it there, Schmidt also decided to bag on Dianne Feinstein for contributing to making politics “sclerotic, geriatric, and extreme.” Should Feinstein retire? Yes. Did she disappoint Democrats by lending legitimacy to the Kavanaugh and Barrett hearings? Undoubtedly. Is it utterly, utterly absurd and reeking of desperation to accuse RUTH BADER GINSBURG AND DIANNE FEINSTEIN of being at fault for the Republicans loading the court with extremists thanks to unelected presidents who squeaked out Electoral College wins, and which represents the culmination of a decades-long political strategy to punish women and undo the entire hard-fought gains of the feminist movement?
Yes. Yes, it goddamn fucking is. Shut up, Steve Schmidt, and anyone else who thinks he’s making a Savvy Political Point that Shows How Both Sides are Bad. Shut up forever. Thanks.

#MLKalsoSaid via Twitter
[ID: A collection of screenshots, mostly of tweets dated from 2015 or 2018, each detailing a quote by Martin Luther King Jr. Every tweet is tagged with #MLKalsoSaid [M L K also said]. The quotes are as follows:
However difficult it is to hear, however shocking it is to hear, we’ve got to face the fact that America is a racist country.
Large segments of white society are more concerned about tranquility and the status quo than about justice and humanity.
America is going to hell if we don’t use her vast resources to end poverty and make it possible for all God’s children to have the basic necessities of life.
We can never be satisfied as long as the Negro is the victim of the unspeakable horrors of police brutality.
I have almost reached the regrettable conclusion that the Negro’s great stumbling block in his stride towards freedom is not the White Citizen’s Counciler [sic] or the Ku Klux Klanner, but the white moderate, who is more devoted to ‘order’ than to justice.
The trouble is that we live in a failed system. Capitalism does not permit an even flow of economic resources. With this system, a small privileged few are rich beyond conscience and almost all others are doomed to be poor at some level. And since we know that the system will not change the rules, we’re going to have to change the system.
But it is not enough for me to stand before you tonight and condemn riots. It would be morally irresponsible for me to do that without, at the same time, condemning the contingent, intolerable conditions that exist in our society.
The white man does not abide by the law… His police forces are the ultimate mockery of law. #ReclaimMLK
Yes, yes, we must stand up and say ‘I’m black, but I’m black and beautiful.’ This, the self-affirmation is the black man’s need, made compelling by the white man’s crimes against him.
The United States military is the greatest purveyor of violence on earth.

It’s disgusting and just indefensible, the way these hypocrites spew out scripture to their supporters who are just as full of shit as they are.
Isn’t there something in their bible about people who have words but no deeds?

How can a disease with 1% mortality rate shut down the United States?
Franklin Veaux - updated 6 hours ago, professional writer
There are two problems with this question.
1. It neglects the law of large numbers; and
2. It assumes that one of two things happen: you die or are 100% fine.
The US has a population of 328,200,000. If one percent of the population dies, that’s 3,282,000 people dead.
Three million people dead would monkey wrench the economy no matter what. That more than doubles the number of annual deaths all at once.
The second bit is people keep talking about deaths. Deaths, deaths, deaths. Only one percent die! Just one percent! One is a small number! No big deal, right?
What about the people who survive?
For every one person who dies:
19 more require hospitalization.
18 of those will have permanent heart damage for the rest of their lives.
10 will have permanent lung damage.
3 will have strokes.
2 will have neurological damage that leads to chronic weakness and loss of coordination.
2 will have neurological damage that leads to loss of cognitive function.
So now all of a sudden, that “but it’s only 1% fatal!” becomes:
3,282,000 people dead.
62,385,000 hospitalized.
59,076,000 people with permanent heart damage.
32,820,000 people with permanent lung damage.
9,846,000 people with strokes.
6,564,000 people with muscle weakness.
6,564,000 people with loss of cognitive function.
That’s the thing that folks who keep going on about “only 1% dead, what’s the big deal?” don’t get.
The choice is not “ruin the economy to save 1%.” If we reopen the economy, it will be destroyed anyway. The US economy cannot survive everyone getting COVID-19.
THIS THIS THIS
And that’s not even talking about how many widows, orphans, and single parent families a 1% death rate will create.
How many more people are dying of non-covid illness because they’re either choosing not to get treatment or there aren’t any beds?
How many households are going to lose their primary breadwinner?
How many disabled people are going to lose their caretaker?
How many couples are going to divorce after losing a child?
How many senior citizens are going to have to move to a nursing home after losing their spouse, or their adult child?
And that’s just personal dynamics. Consider the social.
How many kids are going to drop out of high school rather than repeat a year?
How many kids won’t be going to college because they don’t feel safe on campus?
How many students are deciding against nursing school because they figured out long ago that no amount of clapping is worth getting assaulted by a maskless patent’s family demanding horse dewormer?
How many teachers saw parents spitting on their colleagues at PTA meetings and decided this was their last year in the classroom?
This isn’t something we bounce back from like a recession or a bank failure. This is an atom bomb: this is going to be felt for GENERATIONS.
"The US economy cannot survive everyone getting COVID-19" and yet the attitude with omicron is 100% "everyone's going to get it."
Also, even putting aside the deaths and disabilities caused by COVID, there’s also just the problem of hospital capacity. Yes, we’re in the middle of a pandemic, but like. That doesn’t stop people from needing surgery, or chemotherapy, or breaking a leg, or needing stitches, or having a hangnail get infected badly enough to threaten sepsis. And if all the hospitals are full of people with COVID, even if every single one of those patients recovers just fine with no complications, then guess what? People are still going to die. Because that’s what happens when hospitals are overwhelmed.
During the ebola epidemic, y’know what the deadliest part was? Motorcycle crashes. Because the medical system was overwhelmed with ebola patients, and so motorcycle accident victims couldn’t be reached and cared for fast enough to possibly save them.
And knowing that the hospitals are full of COVID victims ironically makes the emergency rooms more overwhelmed, because nobody wants to go near a hospital in the middle of a pandemic unless they absolutely have to*. So when people get hurt or sick with something else, they’re not going to go to the hospital as soon as they realize something’s wrong - they’ll go to the hospital once the problem’s gotten bad enough to make it clear that they have no choice but to go to the hospital. Which makes things harder on the ER staff, because normally if someone realized they had a bad infection, they’d go to the hospital right away and could be sent home with a bottle of antibiotic pills that’d take care of the problem, and they’d never need to go back in. But now if someone gets a bad infection, they’re not going to head right into the hospital, they’re going to wait and see if it’s actually bad enough to warrant it, which means the infection has a lot more time to progress and get worse, so by the time the poor bastard finally goes to ER they’re well on their way to sepsis, oral antibiotics can’t help, and so they need to start coming in for daily IV antibiotics, and multiple re-assesments for a doctor to check the infection and make sure it’s responding to treatment, because now the patient is at very real risk of needing amputation.
...Which I know, because near the end of 2020 I got an infected hangnail, and didn’t bring it to the ER until it was approaching sepsis, and spent a week as an outpatient for daily IV treatment. And on my last day at the hospital, while I was waiting six hours for my final assesment, when the ER nurse re-took my vitals she outright told me that the reason I was waiting so long wasn’t because the ER was swamped with COVID patients, it was because people were waiting to take non-COVID problems to the hospital, which made treating them much harder and time consuming, plus icy roads meant they’d had some car accidents come in that day, AND the rest of the hospital staff was swamped with COVID patients so they couldn’t get more doctors down there to help.
Like, even ignoring the risks of COVID, overwhelming the hospitals with epidemic patients is still extremely fucking lethal.
*idk if this applies to America, since your healthcare ‘’’’system’’’’ means everyone is already unwilling to go to the hospital before it’s obvious they absolutely have to. but in the rest of the world, if somethings wrong, you go to a doctor ASAP, and people not doing that anymore is pretty bad.
This is a comment based on living in the US, but I’m going to keep this generic-sounding to protect some family members, but yall. The hospitals aren’t just running out of beds for sick patients, they’re running out of caregivers. Doctors, nurses, fellows, residents, the janitorial staff… they’re all getting sick too even with double shots and boosters*. When one person on a care team gets sick, it puts that entire team on watch and mandatory testing. If you only have so many staff to cover NICU babies or oncology peds and then suddenly three are out? Five? How many positive cases until that entire unit is down and there’s no one to care for the patients? When that net breaks, more people will not make it and those numbers above will trend higher. More people will have lasting illnesses or even death from preventable causes like an asthma attack or treating sepsis from a hangnail or a receiving care after a motorcycle crash.
The real fear is yes-everyone is getting sick. I sat at the kitchen table on new year’s day and listened to a list of how many different groups had exposures and how many units were missing team members-and THAT was terrifying. So please, if you are able and I know it can be hard with jobs and commute and the US is an absolute hellscape, do your best to stay safe and put pressure on your politicians to actually take action (hello, 2022 is a midterm year please vote). Get your shots, wear your masks, don’t just brush this off. We’re all exhausted, I’m exhausted. But I’ll be damned if I don’t do what I can.
*Not sick to the point of hospitalization, the vaccines ARE working to protect from harsher bouts of COVID/death but the breakthrough cases are rising. These caregivers are usually contracting COVID from unvaccinated patients in the hospital. Please get your shots.
Also the death rate is higher than 1% - y’all can’t do math.
Additionally you can get Covid over and over. A lot of people are dying right now on their second or third round of Covid. Even if the death rate was 1%, by the time you’ve had Covid 100 times your chance of being dead would be approaching 100%
Get your damn vaccine and wear an N95 mask.
Or go, just see whatever movies you like and don’t let anyone else tell you what you should or shouldn’t like. Play whatever video games you want read whatever books or comics you want watch whatever you want just enjoy something and don’t tell other people what to like or dislike or do or not do
Or don’t do what I said above since I know I contradicted myself
This happened on Oct. 5 and not one major news source covered it. This is the end goal of the anti-choice movement.
An autopsy report stated Poolaw’s child died at 17 weeks gestation.
LAWTON, Okla. (KSWO) - A woman has been found guilty of First-Degree Manslaughter at the Comanche County Courthouse.
The jury returned around 6:30 today with the verdict in Brittney Poolaw’s case.
The jury began deliberating around 3:45 p.m.
An autopsy report stated Poolaw’s child died at 17 weeks gestation.
The report showed it tested positive for methamphetamine, amphetamine and another drug in the liver and brain.
An OBGYN testified on the stand Tuesday as an expert for the state.
The doctor confirmed the fetus was at the gestational age of about 17 weeks and that methamphetamine use can have an effect on the pregnancy, though he said it may not be the direct cause of death for the fetus.
A nurse and medical examiner both testified to seeing congenital abnormalities on the fetus.
Poolaw was sentenced to four years in prison.
Say it LOUDER!!!!
im not christian, but i have encountered so many transphobic christians that actually hearing someone in a position of authority in their religion actively support trans people makes me feel like maybe there is hope
non autistic people shut the fuck up about elon musk he doesnt deserve to be defended and i hope he dies
like as an autistic person i literally promise you there is countless ways to support us without licking the heels of the literal richest man on the planet who uses child labour and exploits millions of people
also ''aspergers'' isnt real and that hasnt been an official diagnosis for over a decade now and it was only called that in the first place because of a neo nazi eugenicist who sent autistic children to their deaths unless he deemed them ''smart enough'' to get the 'aspergers' label. also "high functioning" and "low functioning" autism isnt real. you are literally just autistic or you are not
non autistic people reblog this actually especially if you think even for a moment about defending the epic racist child labour billionaire lol
What is going on with the world??
In a move that has sparked outcry from archaeologists, historians and locals, the Peruvian government has approved a multi-billion international airport near the famed site of Machu Picchu, Peru’s single most important tourist destination. Bulldozers have begun to clear millions of tons of earth for the project, which will be located in Chinchero, a picturesque Inca town.
Building the airport in this location will destroy an ancient landscape, one shaped by the Incan people with terraces and routes.
Critics also suggest that planes flying low over the nearby village of Ollantaytambo and its archaeological park filled with ruins and a massive Inca fortress with large stone terraces, would cause incalculable damage to fragile Inca ruins there and destroy the peace and beauty of the area.
The new airport will make access to the site much easier, and thus encourage greater numbers than ever before to visit.
But Machu Picchu is already overwhelmed by almost double the limit of tourists as recommended by UNESCO. [see also India’s Taj Mahal - an incredible site simply reeling under a relentless, ineffectively managed tourist, both domestic and international, onslaught]
It’s the constant battle between protecting the past and profiteering from it.

What the actual fuck
how about NO
Opinions are divided in the agrarian town of Chinchero, where the airport is slated to open in 2025
PLEASE REBLOG!
hey! peruvian here
to be completely honest, there is probably nothing anyone can do about this at this point because it has been in the works since the 90’s. as you can most likely tell, our government is a fucking joke. still, this needs international attention. a lot of it. this is my country’s history, culture and one of the most beautiful things we have to offer at risk.
our best bet is at the very least causing somewhat global outrage to spread awareness and perhaps make this into something bigger amongst the middle and upper class people in the central cities as sadly the lower class and indigenous citizens (the majority of the country’s population) go widely ignored by the government and the former (middle and upper class) tend to also ignore shit unless they perceive it as affecting them directly
Everyone should know the international sign for Help Me. Let’s make this famous!!
Interesting; I didn’t know this was a thing.
It’s apparently a thing, but it’s a very new thing, so it may need some help being known.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Signal_for_Help
The Signal for Help (or the Violence at Home Signal for Help) is a single-handed gesture that can be used by an individual to alert others that they feel threatened and need help over a video call, or in-person. It was originally created as a tool to combat the rise in domestic violence cases around the world as a result of the self-isolation measures related to the COVID-19 pandemic…
The Signal for Help was first introduced in Canada by the Canadian Women’s Foundation on April 14, 2020, and on April 28, 2020 in the United States by the Women’s Funding Network (WFN). It received widespread praise from local, national, and international news organizations for helping provide a modern solution to the issue of a rise in domestic violence cases.
The signal has been recognized by over 40 organizations across Canada and the United States as a useful tool to help combat domestic violence.
Addressing concerns that abusers may become aware of such a widespread online initiative, the Canadian Women’s Foundation and other organizations clarified that this signal is not “something that’s going to save the day,” but rather a tool someone could use to get help.
found this YouTube video where the person is making a nature documentary about Zelda bokoblins and the production quality is astounding
Thank you, Congresswoman Bush 👏👏👏
“I believe the Republican members of Congress who have incited this domestic terror attack through their attempts to overturn the election m
Ya know, I’m hearing SO MUCH “this isn’t American!” garbage rhetoric from the Republicans legislators that the ABC news people are talking to in their riot coverage, so let’s all take a moment to remember the “no true Scotsman” logical fallacy:
These rioters and MAGAts are very American. Their hate, rage, white supremacy, violence, weapons, contempt, and ill will are, in fact, UNIQUELY American and I need all my fellow white people to wake up to this.
This might be unprecedented but it IS STILL American.
We’re staring in a fucking mirror here, Americans, so now what???
