[image description: tweet by Netchimenās Reverie that reads āTolkien describing places that are evil: no trees grow thereā /end description]
This is doubtless because of his experience of the trenches in the Great War.
Like, this is what things looked like to soldiers who fought in that war (image in black and white of a solitary soldier walking across a muddy wasteland pocked with puddles):
Hereās Delville Wood, the site of a battle in 1916 (sepia image of a wasteland dotted with broken and dead trees):
Hereās an image from the Battle of the Somme, in which Tolkien participated (image of soldiers standing above and inside a trench or earthwork in a grey wasteland; smoke from artillery is on the horizon)
So yeah: no trees = evil was Tolkienās own direct lived experience. Itās precisely why Mordor and the wastelands around it look like they do in his books.
the plateau of gorgoroth, the heartland of mordor, is described as being scarred by countless pits dug by orcs the true seat of evil is full of foxholes and trenches
Thereās a lesson to be learned here.
I hope Tolkien would be happy to learn that a hundred years on, trees grow again here:
From The Atlantic.
I think that Tolkien would be very happy to see that.
The trees have reclaimed the land in which hell had been brought
i couldnt decide on the colors for this one but i think this is good

ābe quietā i think the f not
the animation here is so fucking satisfying and fun to watch
i was reading up on this short last night and i love this little excerpt
The film is notable for featuring a sort of "in-between" interpretation of Daffy. He is not necessarily the zany, impish interpretation used famously by Tex Avery and Bob Clampett, nor is he the greedy, self-centered version that Chuck Jones later popularized in the 1950s. As Paul Dini said in the DVD audio commentary for this cartoon: "[In this cartoon, Daffy] is really kind of almost like a sprite. He's just a little, almost elfin creature who's not really out to hurt anybody or has any ill will or malice toward anybody. He's just completely out of his mind."[2]
some of the wwii era looney tunes shorts are so funny because you have some announcer like āamericaās defense effort! here we see our brave young men marching out to battle. go forth, heroes!ā and then it shows porky fucking pig waddling around with an oversized rifle like āgee i sure hope i donāt step on any l-l-l-landmines :)ā
bob clampett has the best cats. love them all
You know Iām kinda in awe at how funny Looney Tunes was? Like itās been almost a century and the humor still works so well. And Mel Blanc was such a good actor and the animation was so good Iām glad youāve shown me how rad old cartoons were š„ŗš„ŗ
I FUCKING KNOW iām BLOWN AWAY i didnāt give it a chance sooner. the humor is fucking impeccable. people who are like ā4TH WALL BREAK!! 4TH WALL BREAK!!!!!ā would be foaming at the mouths if they sat down and watched it. like itās amazing i started watching the cartoons from as far back as 1937 and 82 years later they hold up so well. and RIGHT????? mel blanc was AMAZING itās just SO BAFFLING TO ME that he voiced basically everyone. his every delivery is so spot on and great. and the animation is SUPERB the screenshots and even videos i post just donāt do it justice. i truly think it is one of the best animated cartoons to ever come out in this lifetime, ESPECIALLY during its golden age in the 40s. it holds up so well after all these years and i know will continue to hold up well. iām glad i can help spread interest in it! iām super happy i decided to watch it
