I submit Elaine Brown, the only woman chairperson of the Black Panther Party, and author of this riveting memoir I never gave back to my friend Jamie after borrowing it.

They have been harassing Black people and treating them like their rights don’t matter for the last 250 years.  White people instead of getting mad at those cops for being guilty are choosing to get mad at Black people for not acting out on their behalf.

33% of black people killed by cops in 2014 were unarmed, against 18% of whites. 

We have a problem with the overall relationship between citizens and police force, but Black young males  are the most-affected demo of all.

“My father died when I was six. He drowned on a fishing trip. My mother had to raise five of us in North Philadelphia. I remember being twelve years old and going to a market on the corner. My mother had sent me with a note, asking for some credit so we could buy some food. The owner made me wait. There were other people in the store, and they were paying, so this guy is just skipping all over me. He’s making me beg in front of everyone. He’s saying things like: ‘Your mom still owes me. She never pays.’ My mom was my queen, and he’s running her down in front of all these people. It was degrading. I hated that he had that power over me. Like he had water, and I was thirsty. So I screamed at him and stormed out. I kept thinking: ‘One day I’m going to buy that store.’ But then I calmed down, and I realized that I just spazzed on the one guy who could help us. So I walked up to some of the dope boys on the corner, and asked them to let me earn. They thought I was too young at the time. They wanted to protect me. So they just gave me the money.”

Join BYP100’s NYC Chapter, Black Lives Matter: NYC & FIERCE! at 7pm tomorrow (8/25) between Flatbush Ave and Atlantic Ave in front of the Barclay’s Center as we come together in response to the #BlackTransLiberationTuesday call to action, to collectively mourn and speak out against the extreme violence that our Black trans and gender non conforming women, girls & femmes face on a daily basis. With five trans* women that we know of being killed in the past week alone, we recognize that we are in a state of emergency and that the time to speak our grief, rage and love to power is now! There will also be a Twitter Chat on Tuesday at 12pm EST to call attention to the violence Black trans women face, and to discuss what we can all do to honor the lives of the Black trans women and femmes whose lives have been ended too soon, as well the lives of those who continue to fight for the freedom to survive and thrive every day. The Black Liberation Movement is not a movement until it steps up to demand the freedom of us all. As long as Black femme lives continue to be under attack, we will continue to stand up and fight back. And until all of us are free, we continue to proclaim and demand that #BlackTransLivesMatter!! #SayHerName #BlackTransLiberationTuesday
