Phillip Graves had been gone for the past two and a half months. Unfortunately for you, it was normal for many soldiers to be gone for months. He was the CEO of the Shadow Company, it was almost guaranteed he'd be gone for weeks or months.
Phone calls and messages from him were rare. He tried his best to call whenever possible, but being in a foreign country with little to no cell service made it hard. The last message he had sent was from over a week ago. It was a picture of the cutest dog you've ever seen. After that message, he was radio silent again.
The night he returned was unexpected. He wasn't actually supposed to be back for another two weeks but his mission had ended earlier than expected.
As he drove himself home, he passed by all the landmarks you would usually point out if you were in the car. Driving past each one, he knew he was getting closer to home. To you.
The neighborhood was quiet, only the hum of his car engine could be heard. Once he parked his car in the driveway, he turned it off and got out. Phil looked at his house. It was a big suburban house he bought with you a few years ago. You had actually been the one to pick it out, something about the color and the design of the house drew you in.
Phil reached into the trunk, grabbing his duffle bags. He tried to be as quiet as possible when he closed the trunk and locked the car.
As he walked up the small steps of the front porch, he noticed a colorful bed of flowers near the bushes. A small smile appeared on his face as he admired them. He was glad that you found something to do while he was gone. He trusted you always to make the house look as nice as possible.
When he walked in, the house was dark and quiet. He figured you were probably asleep, considering it was the middle of the night. He placed his bags on the floor, wincing at the soft thumps of his belongings when they hit the floor. He crouched to remove his shoes.
He didn't notice a figure walking towards him while he was crouched down.
The noises he was making weren't as soft as he thought. He had woken you up. At first, you thought there was an intruder but when you heard nothing other than the soft thumps you assumed something just fell over. Since you weren't fully asleep, you decided to check it out. Not your brightest moment; getting out of bed in the middle of the night to investigate a sound.
You were surprised to find Phil by the door. He wasn't supposed to be back yet, and he didn't seem to notice you.
"Phil?"
Phil's head snapped up to find you standing in front of him dressed in one of his shirts. He stood up to his full height, opening his arms for you.
You didn't hesitate to walk right into his arms, allowing them to wrap around your waist. Your arms reached over to wrap around his neck. His vest still contained most of the stuff he needed for missions. It was bulky enough that it stopped you both from being pressed chest to chest. He wouldāve left it at the base but he wanted to get back to you as soon as possible.
As much as you would've loved to stay in that position forever, you pulled away first, moving your hand up to cup his face. Your eyes scanned over his face, searching for any injuries. Thankfully, you found nothing except for that old scar on his cheek. Your thumb brushed over it gently causing Phil to lean into your hand. You could feel the tears forming in your eyes as you process that he was alive and well.
"I missed you," you said. Your voice was quiet and wavering a bit as if you couldn't believe he was actually standing in front of you. "You weren't answering and I thought you weren't coming back for another week or so."
"Change of plans, darling." Phil leaned in to kiss you. It had been far too long since either of you got to be in each other's arms. This time he pulled away first, he brought his hand up to wipe away a few stray tears from your face. āIām sorry for the lack of calls. I know it worries you, but I thought a surprise would be nice.ā
You sighed. You can always count on Phil to scare the shit out of you when he doesnāt answer. As long as he came back to you after a mission, you could put up with it a little longer.Ā
āWhy donāt you get that vest off?ā You tugged at the vest with a smile. āTake a shower. Iāll heat up some leftovers for you.ā
Phil nodded. He was always grateful that you were willing to treat him so well when he came back even if you were tired. He did feel bad considering he hadnāt been around and left you to do all the work around the house. He gave you another kiss before grabbing his things off the floor and walking up to the bedroom.Ā
It wasnāt long until you heard him coming back down the stairs while you grabbed a plate out of the cabinet. You turned your head to find Phil walking towards you, his hair was damp from the shower. He walked up behind you, placing his hands on your hips and leaning in to place a few kisses on your neck.Ā
āYouāre amazing, you know that?ā he mumbled into your neck. You let out a small laugh as you plated his dinner.
You grabbed the plate and turned around making Phil lift his head from your neck. He could only stare at you with love. āYou tell me every time you see me. Come on, eat.ā
Phil grabbed the plate from you and went to sit down at the dining table. To say he was hungry was an understatement, he was starving. The meals he had on base werenāt as good as your cooking. If he could, he would just eat whatever you made for the rest of his life. Although he probably wouldnāt share with his Shadows, he knew heād lose your cooking to them.
As you watched him eat, a part of you couldnāt help but think that this was all a dream and he would be gone when you woke up the next morning. A selfish part of you wanted to keep him from ever going back to the military. You wanted him here to yourself, knowing he would be safe from any harm. However, you knew nothing would keep him from that life, he saw the Shadow Company as his brothers, a second family, but of course, he saw you as his first.
āHow long are you staying?ā You were scared of his answer. Knowing his line of work, he could leave at any time.
Phil looked up at you, putting his fork down. āNot for a month at least. Iāve got some people handling things so I have more time with you.ā
You smiled. A whole month. Itās shorter than you liked, but a month was a month. You werenāt going to take any of it for granted. Phil stood up from his seat, grabbed his plate, and walked over to the sink. You heard the clink of the plate being set down.Ā
āIāll do the dishes tomorrow, let's get to bed,ā Phil said, walking back over to you and holding his hand out. āIāve kept you up long enough.ā
You grabbed his hand and Phil led you up the stairs and into the bedroom. You saw the bags and vest he had haphazardly thrown in the corner of the room. You decided that it was tomorrow's problem, you just wanted to get into bed and sleep. The two of you crawled into bed, immediately wrapping your arms around each other.Ā
āHow about I take you on a date tomorrow, darling?ā Phil asked. His southern accent was a little stronger because of how tired he was. He knew itās been a while since heās taken you anywhere and he wanted to make sure you knew just how loved you were.
It seems like you had a smile permanently etched onto your face. You havenāt stopped since heād gotten home. āThat sounds great.ā

š Graves did try his hardest to hide his affection to you from the other shadows but they caught on quicker than you did.
š Graves was overly touchy, especially with you. Pats on the back were replaced by lingering touches on the small of your back and waist. Once after a successful mission he picked you up, spinning you around like a Disney princess, you had shrugged it off as a gesture of a job well done while the shadows snickered on their way back to the barracks.
š He felt some need to protect you, keeping you away from dangerous missions no matter how hard you pushed, observing your training from afar. With this urge he felt like confessing to you would jeopardize your safety, he was a very wanted man after all, but he couldnāt sway his gaze from you.
š Eventually he figured it was time to man up so on a slow day of paper work and training he pulled you aside.
š heād be lying if he said his heart wasnāt racing, hands sweating as he spoke to you with faux confidence.
š During your relationship this man is absolutely WHIPPED. Heās lovesick and everyone, including the 141 knows about you. He sings your praises to the shadows over drinks and god forbid anyone dare to shoot a rude remark to you.
š Graves is a PDA enthusiast so trust standing near him in briefings, or really anywhere, will get some giggles from recruits. Often times itās a hand on the small of your back sliding down to your butt, or his fingers tightly intertwined with yours, or an arm pulling your waist snugly to his side.
š He absolutely brings you home for a true southern Christmas, flaunting you to his parents and siblings.
š He keeps a picture of you in his wallet, as every good man does, he keeps one in his helmet and vest as well. Just in case he loses one of course.

I talk a lot about Graves being a barbecue connoisseur, but he really strikes me as someone who can make some bomb-ass food in general, especially when it comes to breakfast.
Whenever he's home, he's the one who does all the cooking, wants his darling fed well, and you can bet your sweet ass that you'll wake up to the smell of coffee (he drinks his black), pancakes, bacon, eggs, sausage, and some fruit to top it off in the morning.
Graves wakes you up with a soft, "Food's in five, darlin'," before kissing the top of your head and back to the kitchen he goes. You come in and the food's all set for you on the table.
Surprisingly, meals are always a peaceful affair with Graves. You're shooting the shit, enjoying each other, and he's chuckling over the rim of his mug at the stuff you say.
After y'all clean up together, you just... laze about, mainly in the living room, enjoying that huge ass sectional y'all got. You're watching TV while Graves is using it as ambient noise as he goes through reports. Might cut the grass later depending on how he feels. You'll definitely go out later to the local farm to stock up on some produce and vegetables, get that cobbler y'all like so much, grab some takeout, and come back to the comfort of your home.
Just another easygoing day in the Graves household.
You had woken up this morning to a sharp pain in your abdomen and wet sheets below you. At first you embarrassingly thought that you had wet the bed, but when another wave of pain hit you quickly realized what was actually happening.Ā
Looking towards your left you see your husband, Phillip, still sleeping soundly beside you. Reaching out to him it only took you softly calling his name and a light shake of his shoulder for him to wake up.Ā
"Wha- What is it? What's wrong?" He asks with concern once he notices how you're clutching your stomach.Ā
"It's go time!," You hissed in pain, "My water broke and the baby's coming!"Ā
Without another word Phillip is instantly out of bed, and by your side helping you stand. āIām here, sweetheart, Iām here. Letās get you to the car now.āĀ
āItās not time yet though; the baby isnāt due for another 2 weeks.ā You hold on tight to Phillipās arm as he leads you out to the car. Realistically you knew that the baby coming 2 weeks early is completely normal, and something your doctor had even brought up as a possibility during an appointment. Your pained and hormone filled brain couldnāt stop thinking about all the negative reasons the baby could be arriving early though.Ā
"Sweetheart, everything is alright with the baby. We're getting to meet them a little earlier than planned." Phillip says soothingly to you as he helps you inside the vehicle. Once you're fully inside you watch as your husband runs back inside, and grabs the hospital bag before climbing inside as well.Ā Ā
The entire ride to the hospital Phillip was doing breathing exercises with you, and doing his best to comfort you. You didn't even realize you had arrived until your door was being thrown open by Phillip who was now ushering you to sit in a wheelchair.Ā
It only takes a few minutes of talking with the nurses for them to lead you both down the hall, and get you set up in the delivery room. You start to feel much better now that you're in the hospital knowing that the professionals are there to help you.Ā
The doctor comes in almost immediately after you've changed into the hospital gown. They say you're about 2cm dilated right now, and encourage you to try and get some sleep since it's the middle of the night.Ā
"Well you heard the doctor, sweetheart. Baby's not coming anytime soon, and you need all the energy you can get." Phillip sat beside your bed; one hand in yours and the other on your stomach.Ā
"So do you," You nod towards the couch in the room, "Get some sleep; I'll be fine laying here."
"That is not how this is going to work. I'll sleep once I know you are." He states, his voice not allowing any arguing of any kind. "I'm here to help you with whatever you need. Now, tell me what can I do to help you sleep?"Ā
"Just- Just hold my hand." That was all you needed right now. To know that the person you loved most was by your side during one of the biggest and scariest moments of your life.Ā
And for the next hour or so that is exactly what he did. Phillip didn't leave your side for more than a few seconds at a time getting whatever you needed to feel more comfortable until finally you fell into a sleep.Ā
You wouldn't say it was deep sleep, but even the few hours of sleep you got did manage to calm your panic from before.Ā Your head felt more clear, but now the pain was worse - 5cms dilated now, the doctor said.Ā
For the next 6 hours Phillip did everything in his power to make you comfortable, and help with the contraction pain. He put on music, gave you a massage, and even helped you with your exercises on the birthing ball. Until finally it was time to start pushing.Ā
"Just keep breathing, sweetheart. You're doing amazing." Phillip whispers to you. He's currently leaning towards you, and his hand is being crushed in yours. He doesn't complain once about you doing so - encourages it even.Ā
Phillip spends the next hour of you pushing standing by your side. Whispering praises into your ear; wanting you to know just how much he loves you.Ā
For as long as this whole thing was, it was worth it when you finally heard the shrill cry of your baby taking its first breaths - it's the most beautiful sound you've heard. With the baby now resting on your chest you take this chance to close your eyes and breathe. While you do so Phillip has grabbed a damp rag, and begins wiping your face of all the sweat and tears.Ā
"She's beautiful!" You stare teary eyed down at the newborn in your arms before liftingĀ your head to meet Phillip's gaze.
"She is," He instantly agrees with you. His eyes now move from the baby to you. "How did I end up with the two most beautiful girls in the world?"
You give a breathless chuckle before telling him, "I love you so much."
"I love you too, sweetheart. I love you too."
The rest of your time at the hospital was filled with you and Phillip taking in the presence of your new baby. This was something the two of you had wanted for so long, and it felt magical to finally have it.Ā

Definitely not, he definitely wants a wife who has traditional values, but he doesnāt believe in the, āwoman stays at home and the man worksā.
Graves has met multiple working women in his career, from his time in the military to Farah, Roze and more. He would absolutely love it if his s/o was a soldier and would work alongside him, in fact he would kill for an s/o like that because she could travel with him and stay with him wherever he is.
Though does that mean he wouldnāt be okay if his wife wanted to be an housewife? Absolutely not, he would be happy with whatever his wife wants for herself, what I am trying to say is that he wouldnāt hold a specific belief against her and want her to be a certain way, she can be whatever she feels the most comfortable and happy as, he would be just as happy if his wife wanted to be a housewife as he would be if she wanted to work alongside him.
would phillip graves allow his shadow wife to still be friends with 141 after the betrayal? like would she still be able to talk to kate or soap etc?
Now Graves isnāt one to be controlling, he wouldnāt tell his wife, āyou cannot speak with themā, but he would dislike it very very much if she did and question her loyalty. Most people donāt understand just how big of a deal that whole situation was for both, Shadow Company and the 141, Graves obviously really dislikes the 141 after they tried to kill him, and considers them an enemy.
When I speak of how much Graves values loyalty when it comes to his significant other, I am not just talking about flirting with other guys or cheating, but also situations like this. He wants an absolutely devoted and loyal significant other. The āYour enemy is my enemyā kind, and he is the same way back, it is definitely not one sided at all.
If his significant other was still speaking with the 141 after all thatās happened, it would lead him to question her loyalty to an extreme level, because that is his enemy, even if things did die down after awhile, he would still not be okay with his significant other remaining contact with the 141. Also, I personally feel even the 141 would not want to remain contact with her as she is Gravesā s/o.
Price and Graves were created to be exactly opposite of each other
Graves: a man who was once a soldier who felt limited in his abilities so he left that life to become a mercenary, giving him more freedom but ultimately showing that he cared more about the money, following orders he was given not caring if it harmed people.
Price: a man who is a soldier who felt limited in his abilities so he worked his way up the line becoming a captain in a role where he was trusted with making decisions that were morally difficult but allowed him to do what he believed was the best outcome for saving people and lives.
This is so fascinating to me because Shepard indirectly calls Price emotional more than once but also refers to Graves as a dog with a bone. A blindly obedient killer vs someone who actually cares.
having a child has taught me that every toddler is completely justified in their frustrations and tantrums because learning how to do something you have literally never encountered or heard of before is insane. and being expected to be completely calm in the face of this constant barrage of overwhelming information is doubly insane.
i got charlie a sticker activity book and it occurred to me i have to TEACH someone how to unpeel stickers. it's SKILL that requires DEXTERITY and FINE MOTOR ABILITY. i thought it was obvious that you have to curl the page a little bit to create a break in the cut so the sticker comes up.
obviously a fucking BABY wouldn't know that because they have no background experience to inform their thought process. OBVIOUSLY. and OBVIOUSLY the LITERAL BABY wouldn't get it right the first few times. it would OBVIOUSLY take practice. lots of it.
i hate this feeling. it's so obvious. why are children treated so badly when they're learning everything for the first fucking time. why do people treat children so horribly and expect so much. they're brand new. why didn't i get the same grace i give to my child? why did no one have patience for me? why, when it's this easy?
