Apologize for my rage about S3, if you don’t want to read negative stuff about the ending or if you don’t want to see anger please skip my post I don’t want to argue

The more I think about s3 ending the more anger I feel inside me. I love the parts before they drive to the eternal flames, but everything after that is so odd, cringe and unnecessary. Our beloved characters are dead. They died without saying I love you, or spend a peaceful time together, or talk things through.

I think Crowley’s sudden sacrificial behavior for human is so strange. Throughout all this time, Crowley wants to run away and just be with aziraphale all of a sudden he’s like “I don’t want an US” “let’s die together for the greater good” I was like what is going on bro who are you

Also so disappointed that aziraphale told Crowley he is god’s BEST angel too. Crowley is Crowley. Hug at the very end Crowley is still called an ANGEL FOR GOD I could not tolerate that.

At the end of s1, they know they will face punishments from heaven and hell so they come up with clever tricks to fool heaven and hell. Yet in s3, they don’t even negotiate with god? They just say, ok I give up, I will listen to you and die. This is not the Aziraphale who lies to god about the flaming sword and the Crowley who cursed god for treating human badly; I love their rebellion, defiance, m their rejection of authority, and the so called “free will”. That’s why I love this show so much cuz I thought it’s the soul of the show (for me). But this notion just went down the drain at the end???? They just rebooted the whole world?

Honestly i know this will be a disputed take but I think s3 writers did a terrible job (I think the production crew perhaps tried their best, but I am suspicious about the writing). I am not sure whether they care about the characters - aziracrow, Jesus, etc? Do they just want to tidy this up and say, hey let’s just make them human and end the world so we don’t have to think about it.

In the end, I refuse to accept s3 ending and choose to take the fandom’s happy ending as the true ending for aziracrow. This is the ending written by people who love and care about them, not some random guys.

Book Omens: Two…. well, I dunno if I can say ‘well-adjusted’, but definitely functional and independent people who also just happen to understand and enjoy each other’s company more than they do anyone else in the universe. GO1: Considerably more Not Normal About Each Other and with more Issues, but in compelling way that drives forwards the new romance melodrama angle, kinda mildly codependent to the level that's fun to play around with in fiction, with a Happily Ever After that feels earned and real. GO2: A heartbreaking but realistic depiction of a relationship between two people who honestly feel an intense love towards each other, and yet this love is not enough to triumph over the many personal and interpersonal problems that slowly disintegrate the delicate equilibrium they existed in, can’t wait to see them resolve this by the next season! I bet it’ll be really heartwarming! Whenever I dislike something very much, I change my mind often within a few days. It's been a week, it hurts less, but I didn’t change my mind this time. I don't accept the final. It doesn't feel right to me, and it doesn't feel fair. I wrote a very angry text earlier and it was rather emotional, not gonna delete it though, it made me feel better. I don't care if the s3 ending was intended to be so bitter or did they genuinely thought it's right and good, I just know that it doesn’t match the whole picture to me (and also, it's just not what I wanted, not gonna lie, but there are so many ways to end the story, and they chose THE WORST). I'd like to say it one more time: the problem for me is not the characters make the choice they did, it's the writers put them in this situation in the first place. And EVEN in those circumstances, i believe that our angel and demon would come to any other solution than this one. When I was drawing this, I was thinking about what makes our beloved characters themselves. It is their shared past and experiences, thousands of memories that influence their personalities and choices. It's their long story, their history. It's not just a "soul", though it matters too if it exists. So, when it was erased this easily, no reincarnations could fill the hole that many of us got. Asa and Anthony are sweet and I kinda liked them after all but their happiness doesn't really bother me as much as Aziraphale and Crowley's. Besides, I was so so sad about not only they were destroyed, but all of the people and the world we knew. It felt so wrong, especially when you think about Adam giving the Earth a chance despite it being so twisted and bad in many ways. Because, firstly it's up to no one to decide the fate of everyone, and secondly, it is wrong to give up on trying to fix things and make it better. It's so important to remember our past, our pain and our mistakes so that we don’t repeat them in the future, and when it's just gone it feels like a loss, not a win. I'm not even talking about all the good things that humanity had, and now it's all went different way. We have seen that people live just fine, and in the new world everything is very similar to ours, but this feels so... not related to us? Idk, it feels like something else. I wonder what humanity had to go through during this time, but as I said earlier, I wanted to get a chance to live on for our world, and not for someone else, who didn't even exist yet... Don't we deserve this? That's why I've drawn this picture. I usually draw something for fun or just to create something pleasing to my own eyes, but this one feel special because of so much thoughts behind it. Pretty simple thoughts but anyway. In my head Aziraphale and Crowley are alive as old selves, happy and loved. In the cottage, of course.

The last thing I would like to add is just my opinion (as everything above, sure) but I want to say it anyway. I believe that every author should tell the story the way they want, without necessarily listening to anyone's suggestions about it. But for me this story was a comforting one, the one about and for all of the people, and now it’s neither. After the S2 I felt like this show is going to end somehow lovely, with everyone achieve the peace they deserved, and that the ending would be the most cliché (in a good way) we could imagine. Because this is what we NEEDED. We needed something that ends fair and everyone is happy, that would be a beacon to help us through the hard times in reality. There are not so many stories nowadays that seems like a fairy tale that gives us hope, like the S1. I think we all have the right to grieve about something that was so important to us and turned out to be a kind of betrayal, despite the fact that it was the author's choice. They had that right, and we have the right to say what we think about it. Also, people who paid to watch it have a right to complain about the commercial product they dislike because it is obviously rushed and not really written very well hahaha but that’s not what I’m talking about. Even if this ending would be written brilliant with a full six episodes, it would be easier to accept but I probably wouldn’t.

I'm not the talkative one when it comes to openly expressing my opinions, it's always been a hard thing to me, but this is what happens when you make an introvert feel the pain about something they love deeply lol. I know a lot of people have already said exactly what I just said but I needed to vent it too. I feel so much easier after putting all of this into words and sharing. Glad if you read it! I’m open to discussion if you have anything to add or disagree.

Ok, now that we’ve had a week to think about it, here’s another, more S1-ish fix it (as the last one was desperate and had issues…but let’s be honest, so did the “season”.)

I don't care if this ending was planned last year or 30 years ago. It is still a shit ending for me. Even if we had all 6 episodes, it'd still be shit if what we got in GO3 turns out to be the ending.

Probably the semi-popular GO fandom take that most grinds my gears is how many people eat up the C&A mentor-protégé dynamic that S2 introduces and S3 really commits to. It's just so insidious. Even in relatively benign posts, people's delight in the idea that Crowley is teaching Aziraphale how to live in and see the world, with rarely any acknowledgement of reciprocal influence, is very upsetting to me.

And, now that we have the full show canon, it's apparent that this is what the primary show writer intended to convey. So I can't get mad at people for seeing that.

Tbf, I'm sure plenty of people who liked this note in S2 draw the line at how it played out in S3. Even if it's not my favorite way of looking at the story in total, it's a valid interpretive lens on S2 that Crowley, who has been forcibly ejected by heaven, is showing Aziraphale, who is still somewhat (and increasingly reluctantly) affiliated with heaven, another perspective.

But this is a far cry from S3's message that a) Crowley is solely responsible for any courage, understanding, or growth on Aziraphale's part; and b) it is fitting for Aziraphale to cede control over his own fate, even to the point of death, to Crowley.

And it has been heartening for me to see that even people who have a more critical take on Aziraphale than I do think the S3 message is bonkers.

I hear you thinking "but S2 does show that Aziraphale has influenced Crowley!" And I agree that the joint magic trick theme shows that Aziraphale has helped Crowley learn to trust. But that, to me, is outweighed by moments like Crowley introducing Aziraphale to food, Crowley playing Socrates in Edinburgh, and Crowley scolding Aziraphale for hosting the ball.

I see tiny indications of what was to come in S1, but overall it feels like the S1 narrative actually respects Aziraphale as a subject, an individual in his own right, rather than Crowley's puppet, and shows a more mutually beneficial partnership between them. While S3 turns Aziraphale into an object through which Crowley realizes his One True Heroic Purpose.

And to the extent that S3 does prove Aziraphale right (via some terribly written dialogue) by confirming that Crowley is good and that it would be wrong to run off to Alpha Centauri while humanity suffered, it never feels like victory or vindication for Aziraphale. Instead his correctness on these points merely confirms that Crowley is the new Messiah.

Maybe I'm just annoyed with myself for expecting S3 to recontextualize this stuff, to clearly show that Aziraphale has influenced Crowley, too. To bring them back into balance, shades of grey, different but equal.

So, I’ve been obsessed with Pratchett since I was 15. That’s 23 years for those keeping count. I just finished GO3 and these are my initial thoughts:

Crowley and Aziraphale becoming human: I don’t love, but you could argue that that was what he planned, and I would buy it. It does follow some of his themes.

But there is a knife’s edge that Pratchett balanced between fury and compassion. He absolutely loved humanity, but he also hated what humans did to each other out of malice, spite, or even laziness. Good Omens the novel was filled to bursting with that.

The end here lacked all of that somehow. God in S1 is unknowable, but God is S3 is just a capricious bitch who seems to have it out for Crowley specifically and through him Aziraphale. The viewer certainly gets angry at God, but the narrative seems to be that, while cold, she is doing the right thing and giving them their happy ending. And while Crowley expresses compassion for humanity, it falls on such deaf ears that the narrative doesn’t actually support that.

The closing sentiment seems to be that we can make their lives better by just erasing all their trauma and baggage. No. Sam Vimes did not pull himself out of the gutter and bodily hold himself out of it every day to be told that actually amnesia would be best. If you wanted to make them human: make them keep their memories. That would have been fine.

Terry would have Crowley and Aziraphale say “fuck you” to God and protect the earth as it was. The way they protected Job’s children. The way they did at Tadfield Airbase. Here they just throw in the towel and start a new universe. They accept their failure so quickly as to be farcical.

And you will never ever convince me that TERRY PRATCHETT would have allowed the words “a story shouldn’t live past its ending” to be spoken without the speaker being immediately eaten by a banshee.

Kissing hadn’t been invented yet.

And still. When Crawly looked at the angel standing next to him, he wanted… something. To get closer. He was under his wing, but he wanted to be under his arm. Put his face in his armpit. Was that a thing? He wanted to burrow in the curls of his hair, wrap around his neck, slither under his clothes. He could feel the Angel’s warmth, and Crawly had been so cold since God took back her Grace. A sun warmed rock was good, but an Angel? Getting to feel the aura of pure love and kindness this one radiated, but up close? It would be like being back in Heaven. Crawley ached for it.

Eve would invent kissing in three weeks and five days time. Most would assume she kissed Adam first, but no, it is entirely possible to conceive life without exchanging a single kiss. No, the first Kiss in History would be delivered to Cain’s head, two minutes and thirty-seven seconds after his birth. 

And yet. Crawly was standing on a wall, under the wing of an Angel, looking at the first storm, and he felt the need. To get his face closer to the Angel. And… nuzzle? The lions did it. It was cute. Did he want to eat him? The serpent part of him wanted to open his jaws wide, engulf him and let him live inside of his body for the rest of eternity. But no, that wouldn’t do, either. Licking didn’t work, either. At least, for the moment. Biting? Getting closer, still no. 

Crawly would go back to that feeling, trying to make sense of it, without finding a a suitable answer. It was only three weeks and six days later, when he saw Eve try her new discovery on Adam, that he understood. 

It would be six thousand years, give or take, until he managed to satisfy that need.

So it's been officially one month since GO3 aired. And it already feels like a different lifetime.

I feel like my reaction to it (although always negative) has evolved so much over these four weeks.

At first, I tried desperately to seize onto any elements of it that I considered salvageable, because it was such a devastating idea to me that i would want to toss it all out the window.

After the months and months we all spent speculating, theorizing, and anticipating, to have it all culminate in nothingness and heartbreak? I couldn't accept that.

But the longer I've sat with the ideas presented by the finale, the more determined I've become to just disregard it entirely.

The characters don't act like themselves. The moral and theological frameworks of the setting are completely retconned. And the narrative arcs are incoherent at best.

You can never convince me that this story was "how it was always supposed to end up," because all the evidence points to the contrary.

Nor do I believe this was the original intent when S2 was written. The narrative threads introduced by S2 are almost entirely disregarded: the 25 Larazrii miracle, Metatron as a manipulative villain, the literal Chekhov's gun of the Derringer in the bookshop, the list goes on.

You would think, with a shortened 90-minute runtime, that any sensible screenwriters would pick a few already-established story threads so they could both save time and deliver on something that was promised. You could have just picked ONE of those, and I'd have been satisfied enough.

But instead? Instead they decided to establish completely new story elements put of the blue, such as Michael going insane and the Eternal Flame at the center of the universe.

Why??? Why waste your precious runtime introducing new bits of lore, especially ones that contradict what we've already seen? Just use the lore that was already there, dammit!

Such a baffling decision. But it also makes it SO much easier for me to decide to disregard the finale altogether.

It wasn't just emotionally upsetting, it was altogether incompetent as a narrative.

So most days? I get by just fine. I engage in The Discourse and vent about why it's all nonsense. I look at good fanart and read good fanfic.

And I "touch grass" (i.e., I go to work and do my chores and fulfill family obligations and talk to my irl friends about non-fandom things, because they don't wanna hear about it). I'm doing all the things I'm supposed to do, all the things expected of me.

But sometimes, like today, the sadness starts to creep back in regardless.

And I'm so, so tired of being sad about something that nobody outside Tumblr thinks is reasonable to be sad about. I'm tired of being dismissed and told to get over it. I'm tired of not being given space to grieve or sit with my feelings, when it almost feels like someone i KNOW actually died.

I don't know if i even have a valid point in all this personal rambling. Just that my feelings have ping-ponged all over the place this past month, and just as grief over something "real" isn't a linear process, this grief probably won't be either.

If anyone knows what I'm talking about, if anyone else has experienced these contradictory reactions over these four weeks...well, you're not alone.

Oh, my dear, you do have a valid point. I understand you very deeply, and I know how hard and complicated this is for all of us, especially for those for whom Good Omens became something far beyond just a show.

It’s awful and gross that some people are telling us to shut up, to just get over it, and “enjoy it.” Suppressing emotions has never helped anyone process anything, especially grief. That’s not how it works. You and everyone else have every right to feel what you feel, and no one has the right to silence us or tell us we should just “get over it.”

Sending you lots of hugs and love, dear ❤ Good Omens has always taught us to find friends in grief and to unite against those who say everything is doomed and predetermined (lol, very reminiscent of those who say this was the only way it could have ended… like Gabriel telling Adam everything is fated. And I’m not only talking about the side of the fandom that liked the finale, I also mean those who made the script and decided this was the only option, and now tell us that themselves).

I'm here for all your grief. Even for people who LOVED the finale, there's still grief. There's still an ending.

But as someone who was hurt by it, I fully understand how devastating it can be - I'm only just starting to feel even a bit normal again now, a month on. And still, I can be pulled back into the sadness.

Story is important. Story is very real to me. A story's promise being broken is a wound. Love to you all. As @iforgiveyouprime said - to our world!

And to the incredible things fandom is creating in its grief. xxx

So just to recap: after MULTIPLE teasers emphasizing the romantic arc of Aziraphale and Crowley and a summary by Muriel showing The Kiss (tm), as well as Prime posting kissing art between the Ineffables, we got:

Did I miss anything?

There are two things I want to emphasize. 1) They KNEW what we wanted, because that's evident in how they advertised the show. 2) Not giving us ANY of it HAS to be intentional. They had to actually work to not allow the Aziraphale and Crowley arc to resolve satisfactorily. It would have been the most natural thing in the world, and it was actively prevented from happening.

Do you ever think about how cool the S1 Bodyswap was and how it worked so perfectly as a show-don’t-tell demonstration of Aziraphale’s arc specifically? Like, it was never directly stated it that was (mostly?) his plan, but Agnes’ clue dropped by his hands, deciphering prophecies is his hobby, and Crowley is the one who asked Aziraphale if he thinks the plan worked…

(And even if this plan came from the two of them together that would still be a huge step for him, and even it came entirely/fully from Crowley, it would still mean a lot that he went along with it so gleefully… But I’m still pretty sure it was mostly Aziraphale’s idea)

A life-saving plan based entirely around there not being a meaningful difference between Angels and Demons and Heaven and Hell, and around Crowley and Aziraphale’s deep intimate trusting understanding of each other and working as a big symbolic gesture of them cutting off their ties to their previous sides. AND Aziraphale having no qualms about basically letting Crowley make his former colleagues think he’s a Demon, and so guiltlessly lying and messing around with the Archangel Michael when they take part in ‘Crowley’s’ execution.

It’s just so impeccable, a perfect character moment filled with other little perfect character moments inside.

And then when GO2 tried to walk back on that character development, I was just, like, okay… I guess Aziraphale never turned his face to the camera and directly said “And now I understand…. Heaven is just as Bad as Hell”, sometimes indoctrination takes a long time to truly unlearn, progress isn’t linear… can’t wait to see how they ACTUALLY resolve this character arc for real this time!

And then GO2-3 Aziraphale never fucking got a moment to unlearn it, he fucking got vaporized out of existence still believing on some level that Angel = Inherently Good. The only way he ever really ‘grew out of it’ is when he go fucking reincarnated into a version of himself who never had that indoctrination in the first place.

Finished watching Our Flag Means Death yesterday, and I personally found the ending warm and cute (a pity that Izzy is gone though). Love the fact that Ed & Stede kissed so many times and other obvious queer affection and relationships. So sad to see that this obvious stuff didn’t happen in S3. I thought this is what S3 will look like, a more obvious relationship between azi & crow 😔
