“Let’s go.” Daichi and Kuroo both say to their teams as they walk to their respective sides of the court.
“Well, I’ll be. They really are goin’ at it.” An older man says as he enters the gym and sees Karasuno and Nekoma warming up.
“Yo! Onoya-san! Over here!” Takinoue calls as he waves.
“Hello!” Shimada greets.
“Hey there, boys!” Onoya greets.
“How many other people did you tell?” Shimada asks Takinoue.
“Dude, this is the first Dumpster Battle in how many years now? There should be more people coming.”
“Don’t you have work to do? Not that I can talk.” Shimada asks Onoya.
“Ha Ha Ha! It’s fine! This is like taking a little time to watch a son’s sports festival, that’s all.”
-On the Court-
Ukai and Takeda are talking when a man walks up behind Ukai.
“Yo!” The man says.
“Hn?” Ukai turns around to see a man with a rectangular-shaped head and a jutted jaw. He has dark, short-cut hair with eyes the same color.
“Ukai! It’s been, what, eight years now? And what the heck did you do to your hair?”
“Oh, shut up. You haven’t changed a bit…Naoi.” Ukai shakes his hand while Takeda watches with a grin, waiting to be introduced.
“We were the eternal bench-warmers!!” Ukai and Naoi turn to announce to Takeda.
“?!” Takeda jolts.
“Though it did give us plenty of chances to watch live games up close,” Ukai says.
”Gifted” players might have no idea why “sucky” players can’t do what they do or how they feel when they’re left out…” Naoi adds.
“...But we sucky players know exactly why sucky players have trouble with stuff and what it feels like to be stuck on the sidelines.” Ukai finishes, and he and Naoi look at each other and laugh.
“Well, well. Keishin! I see you still have the same face as your crotchety old coot of a grandpa.” A 5’8” tall man with light, blondish-gray hair says.
“!!” Ukai and Takeda look at the man, surprised.
“It’s been a while…Nekomata Sensei.” Ukai greets.
“Um! I-I’m Takeda. Th-The one who called you. Thank you very much for agreeing to be here today!”
“Well, if you’re going to keep ringing our phone off the hook, I’d better get out here to make you stop, right?” Nekomata says with a smile.
“ACK! I’m so sorry, sir!”
“I kid, I kid. Don’t worry about it.” Nekomata laughs. “We’ve had some excellent practice games these last three days. I’m looking forward to a fourth.”
“Yessir! We’ll do our best, sir!”
“...I may not be coaching against your crazy grandpa this time…but don’t expect me to go easy on you.”
“...” UKai and Takeda are speechless.
“Oh, come on now, Sensei…” You begin, causing the four men to look at you. “...You won’t go easy on us? Even for me?”
“Now, if it isn’t Little Miss (Y/N),” Nekomata says happily.
“The one and only.” You say cheekily. “I was shocked when I heard you came out of retirement…” You and Nekomata start conversing as Takeda looks at you curiously.
“She used to be one of Gramp's students…” Ukai reveals to Takeda.
“Oh…”
“She also used to go with him to the practice games. She would banter with Sensei just like Gramps.”
“Now it makes sense,” Takeda says, finally connecting the dots. “So that’s why she talks to the players the way she does.”
“Oh, yeah. She definitely picked that up from Gramps.”
-
“Remember. We are blood.” Kuroo begins seriously as the rest of the Nekoma players are huddled around him. “Never stop flowing. Keep moving. Keep bringing in the oxygen…so that our “brain”...” He looks at Kenma.
“...” Kenma looks disinterested and almost uncomfortable.
“...Can operate at his best. Let’s go!”
“Yeah!!” The players respond, raising their fists.
“Kuroo, can’t we please stop that speech thingy? It’s embarrassing.” Kenma whines.
“Why, what’s wrong with it? It’s all about establishing the mood, bro!” Yamamoto says.
“It’s a great way to get us pumped and ready to play.” A boy with jet black hair shaved into a buzz cut says.
“See?” Kuroo looks at Kenma cockily. “C’mon, let’s go.”
“To be totally blunt…” Daichi begins, addressing his teammates. “We’re just a bunch of guys who just met. We’re a patchwork, we’re rough around the edges, and we’re about to play our very first game together as a whole team. We know nothing about our opponents. There’s no telling how this game will go. We could find ourselves charging point-blank into a wall.” Daichi’s facial expression turns to excitement. “But…if we do smack into a wall…that just gives us the chance to climb over it. Let’s go!”
“Yeah!!” Karasuno cheers.
“He’s better at inspiring speeches than we are,” Takeda says quietly. You chuckle.
“The practice game between Nekoma High School and Karasuno High School will now begin!” The Referee announces.
“!!Wow, you’re short!” A 6’1” boy with short, spiked upwards brown hair says to Hinata as he stands across from him on the opposite side of the net.
“?! H-Hey! Don’t underestimate me!!”
“It’s okay. I won’t. Promise!”
“Really?”
“Yeah!”
“Tch!!” Kageyama glares at the two, shocking them. ‘You could at least do us the favor of dropping your guard a little.’ He thinks.
“Y’know…” Kenma begins, catching you and Hinata’s attention. “When you asked about our team, I said I thought we’re good…”
“?Yeah,” Hinata replies.
“But that’s not because I’m on it. It’s because we’re together.”
“...?” Hinata deadpans.
‘I wonder if they have anybody with a killer serve, like The Great King’s. Or maybe they have a mega powerful hitter, like Asahi-san.’ Hinata ponders.
‘Cheeky Kenma…very good getting in his head.’ You think as Kenma prepares to serve.
The whistle blows as Kenma throws the ball into the air. “Server up!” and “Good one!” are heard as the ball flies to the corner of the court on Karasuno’s side, toward Asahi.

“I know you guys will do great. I believe in you guys.” You smile. Yamaguchi blushes and Tsukishima’s ears turn the slightest bit pinker. “Well, I better let you guys get on your way. Don’t want the other two to use all the hot water.” You say as you begin to walk away. “See ya guys tomorrow!” You wave.
-Next Day-
“Feet!! Your feet!! Watch ‘em!! Don’t let ‘em stop!! You’re just swinging your arms around!!” Coach Ukai yells, watching the boys practice.
“Sensei.” Kiyoko says to Takeda as the two of you walk into the gym, each carrying a bag.
“Hm?” Takeda looks at the two of you. “Ah! They’re done?” He asks excitedly.
“Yes. They’ve been repaired and sent out to the cleaners.” Kiyoko replies. “These should be all the uniforms.”
-
Ukai picks up a uniform and admires it. “So we still have just these, huh? I wish we had another set for away games.”
“These weren’t done in time for our practice game with Aoba Johsai.” Daichi says.
“These were the ones I saw on TV! The Little Giant wore one!” Hinata exclaims.
“Okay. I’ll hand them all out!” Takeda announces. After the uniforms have been handed out you see that Noya is already in his.
“Ooh!! Noya-san is in all orange! That really sticks out!” Hinata exclaims.
‘When did he get changed?’ You, Suga, and Asahi wonder.
“Well, yeah! That’s because I’m the star player!” Noya says confidently as you chuckle and playfully roll your eyes.
“Whoa! The star player?!” Hinata asks impressed.
“Idiot!” Kageyama begins. “Liberos get subbed in and out a whole lot during a game so they wear different colors to make it easy to spot them.”
“H-Hey! I knew that! I totally knew that already!” Hinata says before staring at Kageyama’s jersey, number 9. He then looks at his own, number 10. “Kageyama gets a single-digit number!”
“I knew he’d say that.” Tanaka and Tsukishima say.
“Be happy that you’re getting a uniform at all as a rookie!” Kageyama says.
“I-I know…” Hinata replies.
“Oh, okay. So you don’t remember the number, huh?” Daichi asks.
“You did only watch him once on TV, I guess.” Suga says.
“Huh?” Hinata looks at the two.
“Can I tell him?!” You ask excitedly. Hinata looks at you confused.
“Sure.” Daichi says with a chuckle.
“When the Little Giant played in the Spring Tournament…he wore number 10…” You explain. Hinata looks at you, processing your words.
“!!” He looks at the back of his jersey, then holds it up admiringly. He quickly looks at Ukai. “Coach, did you plan this?!”
“Nope. Total coincidence.”
“Then it’s a fate!”
“He said it was a coincidence.” Kageyama says.
“Don’t be jealous, Kageyma-kun. It’s okay.”
“Why would I be jealous of you?!” Before you can try to de-escalate things, Ukai speaks, getting everyone’s attention.
“By the way…back when Hinata’s idol, The Little Giant, was playing…that’s when Karasuno was at the best it’s ever been. But..they still never managed to beat Nekoma. Not even once. The last practice game they played should’ve been a loss too, if I remember right. It all ended with us losing. This time we’re gonna break that streak.”
“!! Yes, Coach!!” Everyone relies.
-Later-
Hinata is sitting, staring intently at his jersey. He’s staring so intently that it causes Kageyama to shiver and whirl around to look at Hinata.
“Hey. Don’t get so nervous you puke again.” Kageyama says.
“?! H-Hey! I’m not gonna puke!”
-May 6th, 8:50am-
-Karasuno General Sports Park, Gymnasium-
The boys are walking up to the front of the building, followed by Takeda and Ukai.
“Sensei.” Ukai says with an intense look on his face.
“Yes?” Takeda replies.
“I don’t smell too much like tobacco smoke, do I? I sprayed so much air freshener on this thing it’s practically soaked.”
“...” Takeda looks at him deadpanned. “No, you’re fine! You have a very lovely lavender scent about you!”
“Dang it! I knew I should’ve used the unscented one!”
“! Line up!” Daichi announces as something ahead catches his attention. The boys run ahead and line up next to each other in front of a set of boys dressed in red tracksuits. On the back of their jackets the word ‘Nekoma’ is printed in big white letters.
“BWAH?!” Hinata expresses as he stands across from Kenma. The rest of the boys stop and look at Hinata questioning. He covers his mouth.
“Line up for the greeting!” Diachi instructs.
“Nice to meet you!!” Karasuno calls.
“Thanks for having us!!” Nekoma replies. Some of the Nekoma players begin to go inside, including Kenma.
“Kenma!” Hinata calls as he follows the boy.
“Ah.” Kenma stops and turns to Hinata.
“Y-You’re on the Nekoma team?!”
“Hm? Yeah.”
“Aww! Why didn’t you tell me?”
“You didn’t ask.”
“...But when you left you said “See you later,” right? You knew where I’m from!”
“Yeah. Your shirt had ‘Karasuno High School’ written on it.”
“ULG!”
“Hey Hey Hey?! What business you got with our setter eh?” A figure appears behind Kenma, making Hinata jolt. The boy is 5’9” with short, black hair with a mohawk that is dyed blonde. He has an intimidating look on his face.
“Hey.” Kenma says.
“Um! I-I’m sorry—” Hinata says scared.
“Him?” Tanaka begins, appearing next to Hinata with his own intimidating look. “What about you, huh? What business do ya got with our rookie?”
“Tanaka-san?!” Hinata says shocked by his sudden appearance.
“Wha’choo lookin’ at punk?” The Nekoma player asks Tanaka.
“You, City Slicker. You tryin’ ta start somethin’, huh?” Tanaka replies.
“The game is what’s going to be starting, Tanaka.” Suga begins. “We’re here to play them, not fight them. And stop calling people “City Slickers.” It’s lame.”
“!!” Tanaka pales.
“Yamamoto, quit picking fights with everybody. It makes you look dumb.” A 5’5” boy with short sandy blonde hair scolds.
“...” Yamamoto pales.
“I’m really sorry about that. Some of our guys can do embarrassing things.” The blonde Nekoma player apologizes to Suga, rubbing the back of his neck.
“No, no. I apologize. That was an embarrassing thing for one of ours to do too.” Suga apologizes as well.
“...” Tanaka and Yamamoto look down embarrassed.
“HWAAA?!” Yamamoto exclaims as he clutches his heart, causing Tanaka to flinch. Yamamoto is looking at something behind Tanaka. It’s Kiyoko. The two make eye contact and Kiyoko bows her head slightly.
“AAAIIIEEEE!!” Yamamoto begins to blush and freak out. “G-G-Girl! Manager! HOT!! Guh! Gyaawaaah!!!”
“Woot! They have a pretty girl for a manager! Haagen-Dazs!” A 6’1” boy with light brown, spiked hair says as he high-tens a 5’4” boy with jet black hair. Their celebration is cut short by a female voice.
“Kiyoko!” You call. The two boys, Yamamoto, and Kiyoko turn to look at you. You say something to her but Yamamoto and the boys don’t pay attention. As you’re talking to Kiyoko the boys are shocked at your appearance. The sunlight was hitting you at just the right angle.
‘So pretty…’ The three Nekoma players think.
“An angel…”Yamamoto whispers. You glance at him and smile while bowing your head slightly. He freezes.
“They have two pretty female managers?!” The light brown-haired boy asks.
“Does that mean we get two Haagen-Dazs?” The jet black haired boy asks.
“You’re gonna pay for this…!!” Yamamoto yells as he runs into the building.
“Ah! Taketora-san, don’t run away.” The light brown-haired boy exclaims.
“Did I do something wrong?” You ask aloud.
“No, don’t worry about it (Y/N). Let’s get inside.” Kiyoko reassures. You walk inside with Kiyoko and see Kageyama walking up to Hinata.
“Hey. How come you know one of the Nekoma players?” Kageyama asks.
“I ran into him when I was out jogging the other day. He said he’s their setter.”
“Setter?” Kageyama asks intently.
“Gah!”
-Inside-
Daichi and Kuroo are facing each other, shaking hands with fake smiles on their faces.
“It’s a pleasure to meet you. Here’s to a good game.” Kuroo says sweetly.
“Same here. Let’s have a fun game today.” Daichi replies with the same sweetness.
‘Ah. I can tell this guy’s a jerk.’ Both captains think. They let go of each other’s hands.
“Let’s go.” Daichi and Kuroo both say to their teams as they walk to their respective sides of the court.

“You sure do have a big appetite today, Suga.” Ashai points out.
“Oh? I’ve got work to do, so I need to be sure I eat enough.” Suga replies, which earns knowing looks from Asahi and Daichi.
-Karasuno General Sports Park, Dormitory-
“So! In two days, we’re supposed to have a showdown with the legendary Karasuno High School, right? Now, the big question I have about our (supposedly) fated rivals is… do they or don’t they have a hot chick for a manager?! I bet one Haagen-Dazs that they don’t have one!!” A boy with a blonde mohawk says.
“Aww! I think it would be cool if they had one, so I’ll bet one Haagen-Dazs that they do!” A boy with brown hair that is spiked upwards replies.
“I’ll bet one too!” A boy with jet-black hair adds.
“Whaaa?! Don’t you two have any brains?! We don’t have a hot chick manager, so they shouldn’t either! The only way I’ll forgive them if they do is if she’s as hairy and ugly as a gorilla! But on the teen-tiny off chance that they have a super-hot, gorgeous supermodel of a manager, I won’t forgive them for the rest of my life!!”
‘He’s crying…’ The other two boys think.
“You’d better be ready, Karasuno!! I’ll make you pay!!” The boy yells out the window.
“Shut up, Yamamoto!!” Kuroo scolds the boy with the blonde mohawk.
“Hey, Kenma! What do you think?” Yamamoto asks.
“Meh? Don't really care either way.”
“Eeh! I figured you’d say that.”
“Still…I’m kinda looking forward to it. Our game with Karasuno.”
“?!” Everyone looks at Kenma surprised except Kuroo.
“What?! Mr. No-Enthusiasm-For-Anything himself is looking forward to a game?!” Yamamoto asks.
“Yamamoto, if you have this much energy left, do you want me to give you extra laps?” Kuroo asks.
“Urk! My bad…”
-The Next Day, With Karasuno-
“Okay!” Ukai begins. “This will be our starting lineup for the game against Nekoma.” He says referring to the boys on the court.
You look at the boys on the sideline. Yamaguchi looks sad, Suga is trying to look unbothered but you can see through it, and the remaining three second years don’t look surprised. You want to encourage the five of them but Ukai continues speaking.
“I know most of you have only just met, so I’m not expecting you to be in sync right off the bat. I hear there was even some kind of trouble between you guys before I got here.” He glances at Asahi and Noya. “Anyway! Just because we have a talented libero now…and our Ace is back…doesn’t mean we’re going to go out and start winning everything. The team that wins…is the one that stays connected the longest. How well you guys pull that off…will determined in the Crows vs. Cats game.”
“Yes, Coach!” Everyone calls out.
“Just getting the chance to practice a real game was no easy feat.” Ukai begins and points to Takeda. “Be sure to thank your advisor for all his hard work.”
“?! W-Wha?! N-No, I haven’t…” Takeda stutters.
“Thank you very much!!” Everyone says before they start cleaning.
Asahi is standing and watching Tanaka and Ennoshita talk as they sweep. Noya is behind him.
“Asahi-san!” Noya says, causing the Ace to jump.
“Yeah…?” Asahi responds hesitantly as he looks behind him at Noya.
“...” Noya looks at him. “Never mind Suga… you’d better not be feeling sorry for Ennoshita too.”
“ULG!”
“Wha?!” Ennoshita responds having heard Noya.
“This isn’t a game of nicey-nice, y’know!” Noya starts. “The best player gets to be out on the court! Period! That’s the way it goes!”
“Noya…Let’s just drop it…” You say, trying to avoid another big fight.
“Um…” Asahi looks at Ennoshita.
“W-Well…” Ennoshita begins. “To be honest…It isn’t as if I’ve been giving my all to the club this entire time either.”
“Huh?” You say quietly.
“I did run away that one time. So um…”
“??” You, Hinata, and Kageyama look at Ennoshita in confusion.
“When you get stronger and better than Asahi-san, then you’ll get to steal that starting spot from him fair and square!” Noya declares. “Right, Chikara?”
“Huh?!” Ennoshita stiffens. “W-Wait, I didn’t say that—”
“Oh yeah. That’s right. If anybody’s gonna lose their spot to you, it’s gonna be Ryuu.”
“?! W-What?! Y-You’re on, punk!” Tanaka yells. “B-Bring it on, bruh!! I can take you!”
“Nishinoya, please stop that…” Ennoshita says, shoving his hand in Noya’s face.
-After Dinner-
Hinata and Kageyama enter the room.
“Aah, that was good. I’m stuffed–GAH!!” Hinata says before seeing what’s going on in the room. “The second years are setting everything up!”
“We’ll do that for you.” Kageyama says as he and Hinata rush over to the second years. Hinata grabs the blankets and pillows from Ennoshita.
“Huh? No, that’s okay!”
“Is everything okay in here?” You ask as you stand in the doorway.
“(Y/N)?” Ennoshita looks at you. “Yeah. Everything is fine.”
“Okay. I just wanted to make sure.” You say. You notice that they are setting up the futons. “Here, let me help you guys.”
“Oh! I-It’s okay, (Y/N). We got it.” Ennoshita says.
“It wasn’t a question.” You smirk. You’re straightening out the futon when Hinata speaks.
“Um, Ennoshita-san…?” The second year looks at him. “I kinda overheard you talking to Asahi-san and Noya-san earlier…”
“You did? So you heard the part about how we ran away, huh.” Ennoshita says embarrassed. “Last year…You heard that Coach Ukai came back for a short while, right?” He asks. “The older one. Not the Coach we have now.” He clarifies.
“Yeah.” You, Hinata, and Kageyama say.
“Well…And this is going to sound really pathetic, but…there were a handful of us who just couldn’t handle practices anymore.” You, Hinata, and Kageyama sit down with you in the middle. “Our captain was an easygoing guy, and we all took advantage of that. But when Coach Ukai arrived, what used to be a just-for-fun club suddenly turned into a serious, in-it-to-win-it team.”
“For those of us who’d gotten comfortable with the old way, it was a shock, to say the least. So…we ran away.” Narita added.
“Soon we all started to miss the game, and we came back. But by that point, Coach Ukai had left again.” Ennoshita explained. You remember Keishin telling you about his gramps collapsing and ending up in the hospital.
“The team has never been all that big. So when we came back, Sugawara-san turned a blind eye to what we did and let us rejoin.” Narita says.
“We’re all pretty pathetic for second years…” Ennoshita says. “But since we’re here, we’re going to work hard and do our best not to let you rookies get ahead of us. So, um…we’re going to try and give you a run for those starting spots fair and square. Okay?”
“Yessir!” Hinata and Kageyama say.
Ennoshita, Narita, and Kinoshita get their bath stuff and start heading toward the bath. You stop them out in the hall.
“Wait up!” You shout at them. They stop and turn to look at you.
“What’s up, (Y/N)?” Ennoshtia asks.
“I just wanted to let you guys know that I’m really happy you guys came back to the team.” They look at you shocked. “I know how hard of a decision it is to come back. I won’t go into details but I left volleyball for a bit and getting up the nerve to come back was tough. But I’m glad I did.” You finish with a smile. The boys are shocked and are unable to find the words to say. The four of you stand there not saying anything until it becomes awkward. “Well…” You begin, breaking the awkward silence. “...I’m going to go say bye to Hinata and Kageyama. I’ll see you guys tomorrow.” You say as you turn and head back to the room where the two first years are.
“(Y/N)!” Ennoshita exclaims.
“?” You look back at the boys.
“Thank you!” All three say as they bow.
“!!” You’re shocked until a smile spreads across your face. “I meant what I said.” You say before continuing to your destination. You’re about to go into the room when you hear Kageyama ask Hinata a question.
“What’re you staring off into nothing for?”
“...It’s kinda obvious…that not everybody on the team will get to play in a game. But…everybody’s working really hard in hopes of getting called on to start.”
“...”
“The only reason that I get to play is cuz you’re setting. I hate to say it, but there’s no way I would’ve gotten this spot on my own.”
“To take a bath! And then I’m gonna go to sleep! And get up even earlier tomorrow morning!!”
“!!” Kageyama starts running after him.
“...” You stand in the doorway as they run past you, not even noticing you.
“Hey!! Dang it, no fair!! You got a head start!!” Kageyama yells as he runs past Tsukishima and Yamaguchi.
“I can understand early practice…but why race to the baths? That’s stupid.” Tsukishima questions with a look of disgust as he watches the two of them race.
“Ugh. Just watching them makes me tired.” Yamaguchi says before yawning.
“Hey guys!” You say getting Tsukishima and Yamaguchi’s attention.
“Oh! Hey (Y/N)!” Yamaguchi replies as Tsukishima just looks at you. “What’re you still doing here?”
“I was finishing a few chores and then listened to a story about the second years. I talked to them and then went to say goodbye to Hinata and Kageyama but they raced off to the baths.” You explain. “So, what are you guys up to?”
“Getting ready to bead to the baths, obviously.” Tsukishima remarks. You roll your eyes at him.
“Are you guys excited to go up against Nekoma?” You ask.
“It’s just a practice game.” Tsukishima replies.
“Well, I’m excited!” Yamaguchi says happily. You smile at him.

“The practice game between Nekoma High School and Tsukinokizawa High School will now begin.” The referee announces.
“Let’s go.” Kuroo says firmly.
-Karasuno High School, Gym 2-
The boys are practicing their receiving skills. After everyone has successfully received five times in a row they move on to practicing serves. When Kageyama calls Asahi’s name it catches your attention. You listen as Kageyama asks Asahi if they can run a few sets before afternoon practice. Asahi agrees happily. Ukai and Takeda are talking about how much stamina Hinata and Kageyama have until Ukai asks Takeda a question.
“Do you think Nekoma’s made the trip up here yet?”
“They should be coming in on the bullet train today. I hear they’ll be staying at the Karasuno Sports Park Facilities and will hold practice games with various schools every day. On the last day of their stay, of course… they’ll be playing us. What sort of team is Nekoma?”
“Can’t say what they’re like now, but back in the day, they had a really solid defense. Every so often they’d have a star player on offense. But even when they didn’t, they were a team with no holes whatsoever. Totally the opposite of us!... The “Cats”... like their name implies…are agile.”
‘And cute.’ You think with a smile.
-Tsukinokizawa High School, Gym 1-
Kuroo dives to receive the ball and it’s successful. He gets praise from his teammates.
“Man, even that big middle blocker of theirs is fast on the digs!” A Tsukinokizawa player on the side of the court says.
‘What the heck is going on here?! We keep attacking, but nothing ever gets through!’ A player on the court thinks.
The ball is heading to Kenma as he stands looking at it. He sets the ball to number 7, who spikes it past the block and earns Nekoma a point. The whistle is blown indicating the end of the game. Nekoma wins with a score of 23-21 in the first set and 25-13 in the second set.
“They don’t have a single stand-out star on either offense or defense…” A Tsukinokizawa player begins as he and a few of his teammates watch Nekoma walk off the court. “...So how the heck are they that good?!”
-Karasuno High School, Gym 1-
“LUNCH BREAK!” Daichi announces.
“Yeah!!” Everyone responds happily. You’re about to follow everyone until you see Ukai looking troubled.
“Everything okay, Coach?” You ask. He doesn’t reply. You see the magnetic board with the player’s names on it and realize what’s going on. “Having trouble with the starting lineup?”
“Yeah. It’s the setter spot.” He replies. “I just…can’t pick.”
“...Try thinking out loud. It helps me sometimes.” He looks at you uncertainly. You smile and nod reassuringly. He hesitates then sighs, giving in.
“If we’re looking at pure athletic ability, it’s Kageyama for sure. But… right now, Sugawara has the best chemistry with Azumane, our Ace. While their two years of experience playing is Sugawara’s biggest strength… Kageyama has such overwhelming talent that I wouldn’t be surprised if he finds some way to overcome even that deficit in no time flat. He’s already using the rough-edged weapon that is Hinata with precision…as well as making good use of the other hitters. It only took him a month to manage that. If he was letting his talent go to his head and sitting back to rest on his laurels, that would be one thing… but the kid is one of the most dedicated players on the team.”
“...” You stand listening to Ukai, not saying anything.
“So. Say I put Kageyama into the starting slot for this upcoming practice match. If he can find some real chemistry with Azumane, even though the two of them have just met…then he’ll end up being the obvious choice for the starting setter when we start playing real games.” As Ukai continues you notice Suga look back at you two with a concerned look. “But that spot has been Sugawara’s for years. He’s worked hard for it and he has the complete trust of all his other teammates.”
“Could I be brutally honest with you?” You ask.
“...Go for it.”
“Could the reason you’re having trouble deciding is because Suga is a third year?”
“...!”
“This tournament season is special for the third years. This could be the last chance they have to play.”
“You’re probably right, kid. When I was in High School…in the whole three years on the team, I only ever cracked the starting lineup once. And that’s because the regular starter, a junior of mine, was injured and couldn’t play. At the time, the fact that I never managed to get a chance to play in a real game frustrated me like you wouldn’t believe.”
“...”
“But! Sure I’m technically a coach now…I can’t let myself think like I’m still a player. I’ve gotta leave personal baggage at the door.”
“Well, whatever you decide I know it will be the right choice.”
“Thanks, kid.” Ukai says,
“Don’t worry about it.”
-Later-
Ukai is getting a drink from a vending machine when someone calls out to him from behind. He turns around and sees Suga standing there.
“Yeah?” Ukai asks before taking a sip of his drink.
“For all of us third years…” Suga begins. “...there’s no next year.”
“...!”
“That’s why… we want to win as many games as possible now. Even just one more victory, to give us a ticket to play one more time. If Kageyama is the one who will give us the best chance of getting that next win… then I think there’s no reason not to pick him as the team’s starting setter.”
“...!”
“Oh…That was rude of me. I’m sorry, sir. Daichi, Asahi and I have been playing together since we were rookies. And frankly, I want to be out there on the court with them. I want to be out there as much as possible… even if it’s just for one rally. When Kageyama’s tired. A trick play. If something goes wrong… sub me in. Throw me in as a stopgap. I don’t care if it’s something so minor that everyone pities the “poor third-year forced into that.” If it means another chance for me to get out on the court during the game, I’ll do anything. Even if I’m not the starting setter, I still won’t give up on getting out there. The more chances I get, the better. That means more games…and that means more wins. I’ve already talked this over with the other third years.”
“...Sugawara.”
“?”
“Heck. To be honest, you’re scaring the crap out of me right now.”
“What?!”
“I’m still a novice when it comes to coaching, but…I promise you that I’ll do everything I can to make sure you keep on winning.”
“Thank you, Coach!”
“Sure thing.”
“...”
“...”
“Time to buckle down. We’re gonna win as many as we can.” Daichi says determined. He’s leaning against a wall around the corner from Ukai and Suga.
“Yeah.” Asahi replies next to Daichi.
-Later-
Hinata is walking down the hallway after using the restroom when his attention is pulled to someone behind him.
“AHA! There you are, Hinata. Do you have a minute?” Suga asks, walking up to him.
“Oh! Sugawara-san.”
“I’ll pass this to the rest of the rookies later…” He says getting something out of his pocket. “But here.” He hands Hinata a folded-up piece of paper.
“?”
“They’re hand signs…” Suga explains as Hinata unfolds the paper. “I’m not Kageyama. I don’t have the skill to set the ball perfectly for you wherever you jump. So instead, I want to establish some signs so that you’ll know ahead of time what set I’m going to use. Either that or I’ll do a simple “Jump here.”
“OOH!”
“I know it may sound boring to try to memorize all of these…”
“No, not at all! Secret hand signs are super cool, so they’ll be easy for me to remember!”
“Great! Then we’ve just got to have to practice together to get our timing down. Whenever you happen to have enough energy left after normal practice would be cool.”
“Sure!! I’ll practice with you whenever you want! I wanna learn how to hit every kind of set!”
-Cafeteria-
There’s a massive amount of food on the table. Tsukishima and Yamaguchi look at it and sigh. Across from them sit the other two first years. Hinata and Kageyama are scarfing down their food.
“Eat! Both of you! Stuff your face even if you’re not hungry!!” Noya exclaims while pointing at Tsukishima and Yamaguchi. “If you don’t build up your strength now, what’re you gonna do when summer comes?! You’ll dry up into sticks and blow away!”
“Yamaguchi, are you going to eat that? Can I have it?” Hinata asks.
“Hey! Let him eat his own food!” Noya scolds.
“You sure do have a big appetite today, Suga.” Ashai points out.
“Oh? I’ve got work to do, so I need to be sure I eat enough.” Suga replies, which earns knowing looks from Asahi and Daichi.

-Last Time-
“Wow! That’s awesome!” Hinata says before he starts asking a million questions. This leads to Kageyama getting annoyed and yelling at Hinata. You laugh as you watch your four friends chat and bicker.
‘I can’t believe I found such amazing friends.’ You think.
Everyone has been working really hard for the training camp.
-The Day Before Training Camp-
-Tokyo Station-
“Whooaa! Dude, this’ll be the first time I’ve ever been on a bullet train!” A boy says.
“What, really?” Another asks.
”W-What, you’ve been on one before?”
“Yeah. Lots of times.”
“Hasn’t everybody?” A third boy joins the conversation. They talk for a bit longer before a tall boy with disheveled black hair speaks.
“Hey, you guys! Stay together and walk properly. We’re in public y’know.” He says as he leads the group further into the station. They’re all wearing red tracksuits that have ‘NEKOMA” written on the back of the jackets.
-Karasuno High-
-After School-
-Gym-
“Everybody here? Good.” Ukai asks.
“Yes, Coach!” Everyone replies. Everyone gathers around Ukai and Takeda.
“Our practice game with Nekoma is in four days. After that, the Inter-High Qualifiers are right around the corner. We’re short on time, and this team is long on holes. If you wanna win, there’s only one thing to do. Practice. Practice. Practice. Get that ball back up in the air even if it makes you puke.”
“Yes, Coach!”
‘Hinata’s done that once already.’ You, Tanaka, Suga, and Kageyama think. Practice starts and after it’s done you all arrive at the Karasuno High School’s Class Field trip/Club Training Camp Dormitory.
“Coooool!! This is the first time I’ve been here!” Hinata exclaims happily.
“It looks haunted.” Yamaguchi says as Tsukishima sighs next to him.
“Don’t worry, Yams. It’ll be fun.” You reassure him as you smile at him. He blushes.
“O-Okay.” He stutters and then sees that Tsukishima looks crankier than before. ‘Wonder what’s up with him…’ Yamaguchi thinks. As everyone goes inside Hinata explores happily.
“Calm down, would you? Ugh.” Kageyama says grumpily.
“Hey! This is my first training camp, y’know!” Hinata replies defensively.
“Let him be excited. It’s cute.” You defend, causing Hinata to blush and the other to feel jealous.
“What’s so fun about being stuck with the same sweaty, smelly, filthy guys all day, every day for almost a week?” Tsukishima asks rhetorically.
“Tsukishima, you twit!! It’s impossible for any space within a 500-meter radius of Kiyoko-san and (Y/N)-san to be either sweaty or smelly!!” Tanaka and Noya yell.
“Uh, Shimizu lives near here. After practice and shores, she goes home for the night. She always has.” Suga explains. The two second years fall face-first onto the ground as Suga happily waddles away like he didn’t just kill his teammates’ dreams, which he did. The two suddenly regain their hope as if just realizing he didn’t mention you. They look at you.
“Oh! I’m staying with Kiyoko.” You say before following Suga and the same way. Effectively killing their dreams again. As the boys get settled, you, Kiyoko, and Takeda prepare dinner. After everything is cleaned, you and Kiyoko head to her house. You guys get ready for bed. As you’re lying down you ask Kiyoko a question.
“What do you think the boys are up to?”
“Probably nothing good.” She says.
“Good point.”
-Dormitory-
“Bath time, rookies!” Tanaka announces as he walks down the hall, only to see Hinata nervously glancing around. “Hinata, what’s up?”
“GYA!! Th-There…”
“There?”
“Th-There’s a stranger here…in this building.”
“Huh? No way, bro! We’re the only ones using this building all of Golden Week!”
“But I saw someone! I swear!”
“Uh-huh. What’d he look like?”
“He…He was small and pale…like a little kid…Do…Do you think it’s…a ghost–?”
“Whoa whoa whoa!! Don’t say that!! I-It’s totally not that! You…You just saw your reflection in a window! Yeah! That’s it! Everything’s fine! We’re totally okay! Now let’s hurry back to everybody else right now. Go go go!”
“Meep!! A figure appears behind Tanaka, making Hinata jump. This causes Tanaka to jump as well. “Th-There it is!!”
“What’re you two screaming about? Quiet down or Daichi will get mad.” Noya says as he looks at the two. He has a towel wrapped around his neck and his hair is down and wet.
“...”
“Huh? Now it looks kinda familiar…” Hinata begins. “Noya-san…?! B-But…Oh…Oh no…Noya-san shrunk!! AAAAIIIGH!!”
“...”
“Hey, now! BFFF!! D-Don’t say that. Haha! And keep it down… Hee Hee Hee!!” Tanaka says as he tries to hold in his laughter, but fails.
“Ryuu, you traitor!! Don’t you dare laugh at me!!” Noya scolds. “ That’s it! Both of you prepare to die!!” Noya jumps on Tanaka and starts pulling on his cheeks.
“ALL OF YOU! SHUT UP!” Daichi yells as he storms into the hallway, causing the three to scream.
-The Next Day-
Everyone is in the gym practicing receives. Hinata receives his fifth one in a row and then Ukai announces that running is next. As the boys get their outside shoes on, you hear Ukai call your name.
“Yes?” You ask, looking at him.
“Can you go with them to keep an eye on them?”
“Sure thing!” You reply as you head to the door to get your shoes on and follow them.
“Thanks.”
“No problem.” You begin in the direction that the boys went. You catch up to the team only to see Hinata and Kageyama a bit ahead of everyone else. “Hey, Captain!” You greet him as you match pace with him.
“Oh! Hey, (Y/N)! What are you doing?” Daichi asks.
“Coach wanted me to keep an eye on you guys, but I’m mainly guessing those two..” You say gesturing to the two ahead of everyone.
“Ah Makes sense.” Suddenly Hinata starts yelling, as if it will make him go faster. “Hinata! Don’t yell like that! You’ll waste your energy!” As Daichi scolds him, Hinata’s speed increases and he starts going in the wrong direction.
“Don’t worry. I’ll follow him.” You reassure as you follow the first year. You can’t match his pace but you’re still close enough to see and hear him. Suddenly, he stops.
“Huh? Uh…Did I go the wrong way?” He wonders aloud, looking around.
“Hinata!” You yell catching up to him.
“(Y/N)?” He looks back at you.
“Geez. You’re really fast.” You compliment as you put your hands on your knees and catch your breath.
“I-I’m sorry! I didn’t mean to run off!” He bows.
“It’s okay. But we should…” You stop talking when you see a boy in a red jacket sitting, playing on his phone. Hinata notices him as well and before you can say anything, Hinata is jogging over to the boy.
“Hi! Whatcha doing?”
“Buh?!” The boy looks at Hinata in shock. “Ummm… Uh… being lost?” You arrive at Hinata’s side just in time to hear this.
“Really? So you’re not from around here?” The boy glares at Hinata and is surprised when he sees you next to him. He quickly looks back at his phone.
“No.” He says as he continues to play his game. You and Hinata stare at him.
‘He’s kinda cute…’ You think. Hinata is all of a sudden crouching next to the boy.
“Is that fun?” Hinata asks regarding the game.
“Huh? Uhhh…not really. It’s just a good way to waste time.”
“Oh really?”
“Yeah.” You notice the boy doesn’t seem very interested in talking to Hinata so you speak up.
“So, what game are you playing?”
“Oh. It’s-” Before the boy can answer, Hinata interrupts.
“You play volleyball?!” His excitement causes you and the boy to jump. “Those shoes! They’re volleyball sneakers, right?!”
“Oh, uh…yeah.”
“I’m on a volleyball team too! I’m Hinata Shoyo!”
“And I’m (L/N) (Y/N).”
“...Kozume…” The boy mumbles.
“Kozume? Is that your first or last name?” Hinata asks.
“It’s okay. Forget about it. I don’t care for that, um… senior-junior stuff in sports. It’s all stiff and formal.”
“Oh. Really…?”
“...” Kenma doesn’t reply. Sensing the awkwardness, you speak.
“So, do you like volleyball?”
“Meh? I’m just kinda playing it. I don’t hate it… I just don’t like getting tired and sweaty and stuff. Some friends of mine play on the team though… And I think they’d be kinda upset if I wasn’t there.”
“I think you’d have way more fun if you learned to like it.” Hinata says.
“I agree.” You say.
“Eh. I’m only going to be playing through high school anyway.”
“What position do you play?” You ask.
“Setter.”
‘Uh oh…’ You think.
“Wow, really? You’re totally different from our setter! He’s more like “GRAAAH!” and “HRRRGH!” all the time! By the way, I’m a middle blocker!” Hinata exclaims.
“Ah.”
“Yeah, it’s really weird, isn’t it? Middle Blocker is supposed to be a position played by all the tall guys.”
“...Yeah, it is, I guess… but it doesn’t seem weird to me.”
“!”
“I get that kind of thing at tournaments a lot too. People look at me like, “Setters are supposed to be the smart guys. What’s he doing there?” I mean… I’m not a gifted athlete or anything.”
“I dunno. I hear we used to be really good, then we got really bad. But the team we’ve got now…I think it’s pretty good.”
“!”
‘It can’t be…’ You think, looking at Kenma’s bag.
“Um…W-What’s the name…of your-” Hinata begins.
“Kenma!” A voice calls, catching you and Hinata by surprise.
“Ah. Kuroo.” Kenma says.
“Um!” Hinata begins.
“Gotta go. See ya later, Shoyo, (Y/N).” Kenma says walking away with Kuroo.
“Quit wandering off.” Kuroo says.
“Sorry.” Kenma apologizes.
“Later…?” Hinata says confused.
‘So he noticed Hinata’s shirt…’
“C’mon Hinata. We gotta get back before they send a search party out for us.” You say.
“!!! Oh crap! That’s right! We’re supposed to be running!” He says before taking off.
“Hey! Wait for me!” You yell, running after him.
-Tsikinokizawa High School, Gym 1-
Three boys are standing and watching a team in red warm-up.
“Whoa. They really came all the way from Tokyo?” One boy asks.
“Doesn’t their setter seem kinda short?” Another asks.
“Yeah. And he looks really skinny too.” The first boy replies.
“Maybe he’s their backup.” The second boy suggests.
“Are these guys supposed to be any good? I’ve never heard of them before.” The third boy asks. “What was their name again? “Neko” something…?”
“That short and skinny kid you’re talking about…” Kuroo appears in the doorway, scaring the three. “...Is no backup to us… he is our spine… our brain… and our heart.”
“The practice game between Nekoma High School and Tsukinokizawa High School will now begin.” The referee announces.

Tsukki didn’t pay attention. Instead he stared at the empty chair in front of him, twirling a pen in his long fingers as the teacher in front kept going on and on about something he had already understood an hour ago.
A poking finger on his arm brought him back to the present. Yamaguchi nodded in the teacher’s direction who had obviously asked a question and picked Tsukki to answer it, which he did with ease, and then went back to focusing on the chair.
It had been a week since you’d been to school. The few texts he had sent remained unanswered and he wondered if you were sick or mad at him for something. Baka, you should tell him if something was up. He watched a leaf being carried on a breeze outside, annoyed that he had to sit in class without you. Club activities were canceled for today. Maybe he could drop by your place once class was over. As a kind of wellness check, he told himself. But maybe you were avoiding him. But what had he done? He rifled through your last couple of conversations in his mind. He hadn’t treated you any differently, he thought. He had snatched up your cocoa to exchange it for his strawberry milk like he usually did, he had made a comment about the messiness of your locker last week. You had caught him staring a couple of times but none of that was out of the ordinary. Annoyance turned into frustration. And then the bell rang. And so did his phone. Snatching it out from under his desk he felt his heart do a silly little flip when he saw your name on the display and amongst the chattering students ready for their day’s end he picked up.
“Hey, y/n. About time you-”, he stopped when he heard a sob, “Y/n?”
Yamaguchi stood next to him, slowly packing his things.
It was difficult to make out what you said next - he held his other hand to his ear to drown out the noise of the classroom.
“Y/n? What’s wrong?”
“Can… could… could you come over, please?”
Out of breath, he rang your doorbell when Yamaguchi, wheezing behind him, closed the garden gate.
A grandmother opened the door.
“Yes, dear?”
Tsukki straightened, inadvertently towering over the small elderly woman in the process.
“Is y/n-san here?”, he asked politely.
“Why yes. Come in, come in. Have some tea, dears.”
The two boys entered and took off their shoes, standing a little awkwardly around in the entryway. He had been to your house a few times in the past to study. At first glance nothing seemed amiss. A bucket of water with a rag and a duster leaning against it, indicated that the grandmother had obviously been in the midst of cleaning.
“Y/n-chan is upstairs, the poor little darling. Terrible thing to lose a mother. I remember when-” Tsukki didn’t let her finish and walked past her upstairs, leaving Yamaguchi to fend for himself.
A little clay sign, decorated with sakura blossoms swirling around your name marked your bedroom. A tray of untouched food, still steaming, was placed in front of it. He picked up the tray and knocked.
A bundle of blankets, shivered slightly as he closed the door behind him.
He had no idea what to do now. Placing the tray on the rather cluttered desk he went over to your bed.
“Y/n.”, he began.
The blanket moved and slowly a face emerged. It was evident you had been crying for quite some time. Tsukki felt weird for thinking that even with your puffy red eyes and nose you were still so pretty to him. He grabbed a packet of tissues from your bedside table, took out a little square and, after hesitating a moment, dabbed some tears away, before clearing his throat and handing the tissue to you.
“Thank you for coming.”, you said. Your voice was hoarse.
“No problem.”, he replied lamely.
Silence fell between you two.
Then you hugged him.
He felt your fingers gripping his shirt and a new wave of tears soaking the fabric.
What would Yamaguchi do?
He hugged you back. Arms tightly wrapping you.
“I’m sorry for your loss.” He felt ashamed that this was all he could come up with. “Your mom… I only met her a couple of times but from what you told me she seemed really great.”
More sobs and because he didn’t know what else to do he just stayed quiet, holding you like this.
Tsukki didn’t know how much time had passed when your breathing finally became deeper again. “The granny from downstairs made you some food.”, he kept hugging you as he nodded towards your desk. You looked up and followed his eyes.
“I’m not hungry.”
“When was the last time you ate?”
“Dunno.”, you mumbled.
“Then, at least have a bite of it. I’ll… I don’t know. I’ll eat with you?”
You raised a squinty brow and let out the first small chuckle you had in days at his awkwardness. Tsukki offered a little smile, glad he seemed to be on the right track. Giving your chubby form one more short squeeze he let go and retrieved the tray, before returning to you and setting it on his knees. You wiped your face on the sleeve of your sweater and looked over the tray. You really weren’t hungry but seeing Tsukki stiffly raise a fork with a speared slice of apple carved into a bunny to your lips made you open your mouth. The sweet tang of the fruit spread on your tongue and you slowly began to eat. Apple bunny after apple bunny was presented to you and when the little plate was cleared, Tsukki dipped a spoon into a bowl of stew. By now you were starving.
Many voices and even some quiet laughter wafted up from downstairs a few minutes later. By now the tray was cleared completely and Tsukki had listened intently to a sweet story you had been telling him about your mom. When a muffled crash sounding like a pot lid hitting the floor was followed by another round of laughter, you two exchanged a look and Tsukki said he’d go investigate. He was pleasantly surprised when you said you’d join him.
As you two headed downstairs you were met by quite a sight.
Yamaguchi, wearing pink long rubber gloves that went up to his elbows and a bandana in his hair, was doing the dishes while Suga expertly stacked mountains of food containers into your fridge. Your father, having obviously come home from work, was in deep conversation with Daichi and Asahi over on the couch. Noya and Tanaka were being instructed in the art of laundry folding by the granny in one corner and Kageyama and Hinata were in a heated discussion about how to properly stack pots and pans into a pantry. From a short glance into the cupboard Tsukki could tell they were both wrong.
But you laughed. You stood next to him holding your stomach, laughing. And Tsukki joined in.

“Right. First and foremost…receiving.” Ukai says addressing everyone.
“If you can’t do that, you’re useless. We focus on that starting tomorrow!” Ukai continues.
“Yes, Coach! Thank you very much!”
“Don’t forget your cool-down stretches.”
“Okay, guys! Stretch out!” Daichi instructs.
“Yeah!!”
“Graaaah…” Ukai sighs.
“...? Are we really so terrible at receiving that it’s worth that heavy a sigh?” Takeda asks.
“Nah. Yeah it’s bad, but… that’s not what I was thinking.”
“...?”
“Back when I was a player and I was on the side that got picked to play, I never gave it any thought, but…when you’re on the side that does the picking as a coach…you can get stuck with some real tough decisions.” Ukai says while looking at Suga and Kageyama talking.
“...”
“Clean up now! Hurry!” Ukai yells.
“Yes, Coach.”
On your way to help clean, you see Hinata looking off into the distance. Just as you’re about to check on him, he speaks.
“Asahi-san!”
“? Yes?”
“I…I’m no Ace, but…I’m gonna be the Greatest Decoy…so that I can open up the way for the Ace!” Asahi looks at him surprised.
‘Way to go Hinata!’ You think proudly.
“Oh! Um! I still can’t do that without Kageyama’s setting though. But, uh…um…ah…uh…er…ummm…”
“Listen, um… It’s usually the wing spiker playing on the outside left that gets labeled the Ace, right? So that’d be me or Tanaka.”
“? Right.”
“Yeah, hitting through triple blocks and getting most of the sets when things get tough… that’s all part of the Ace’s job. But getting your setter to say something like that about you? I think that’s pretty awesome too.”
“...?”
“Uhh…so umm…yeah. A-Anyway! What I’m trying to say is…despite whatever position anybody plays…don’t you think the coolest player is the one the other team watches out for the most? Like if they said “Watch out for that small middle blocker! He’s crazy fast!” and stuff.”
“!!!” Hinata nods ferociously.
“If you want my spot, I won’t let you take it that easily.” You smile at the two.
“Yes, sir!!”
“Um…that’s assuming I get to be back in the starting lineup though.” You deadpan.
“Geez, Asahi! You are so timid for such a big guy.” Suga chuckles.
“It’s good to have you back too…Suga.” Daichi says.
“I’m sorry I was such a wishy-washy, namby-pamby, fidgety-flighty, indecisive wreck.”
“I wouldn’t go that far.” You chuckle. “And it’s good to have our reliable libero back. Right, Noya?”
“Yeah!” The libero answers enthusiastically.
“But no more smacking the vice principal around and breaking stuff, got it?” Noya freezes and has an embarrassed and scared look on his face. “Oh yeah. I guess we got our wuss of an Ace-only-in-name wing spiker back too. I’d almost forgotten.” You giggle at Daichi’s words and Asahi’s facial expression.
“Right. Let’s finish this off and call it a night, folks!” Ukai announces as all the players gather in a circle while you, Kiyoko, Takeda, and Ukai stand to the side.
“Karasuno…Fight!” Dachi cheers.
“Yeah!”
“Oh, Coach.” Takeda says getting the man’s attention.
“?”
“These are the team’s managers. This is Shimizu Kiyoko, a third year.” He introduces, gesturing to the girl, who bows.
“It’s nice to meet you.” Kiyoko says.
“Same to you.”
“And this is (L/N) (Y/N), a first year.” Takeda gestures to you. You bow and then look up to see Ukai has a look of disbelief and hope. When he sees your face fully his expression turns to recognition and shock.
“It’s nice to see you again, Keishin-san.” You say shyly. This surprises Takeda.
“You two know each other?!” He asks.
“Yeah. My gramps used to teach her when she was younger…”
“Don’t forget you would help too.”
“Yeah, you were a terrible student.” He smirks.
“Hey! No, I wasn’t. You were just a bad teacher!!”
“Whatever you say, kid.” You give him a playful evil look. You then get serious.
“So, how is he?” As you and Ukai talk, Kiyoko and Takeda go their ways to let you catch up. The team sees you two talking and wonders if you know each other, and if so, how.
“Okay. Next up…the training camp. Right?” Ukai asks.
“Right.” You reply.
-Bonus-
You’re walking home with Hinata Kageyama, Tanaka, and Noya when Hinata speaks.
“Hey, (Y/N)...”
“What’s up?”
“So I saw you talking with Coach before we left…”
“Okay…What about it?”
“W-Well, you looked like you know each other…”
“Oh!” You giggle. “ Yeah, I know him. His grandfather used to teach me when I was little.”
“Really?!” Hinata, Tanakam and Noya ask. You laugh at their reaction.
“Yup! Keishin-san helped Coach Ukai from time to time as well.”
“Wow! That’s awesome!” Hinata says before he starts asking a million questions. This leads to Kageyama getting annoyed and yelling at Hinata. You laugh as you watch your four friends chat and bicker.
‘I can’t believe I found such amazing friends.’ You think.

“We’re ready to play!!” The two exclaim together.
“...” Ukai watches as Hinata and Kageyama regroup with their teammates. “Sensei.” He says getting Takeda’s attention. “Those two.”
“Hm? Do you mean Hinata and Kageyama?”
“Yeah. They from the same middle school? Wait, it has to be earlier. The same elementary school then?”
“Oh no. They met at the beginning of this very semester. At first they didn’t hit it off at all. In fact, I hear it was pretty rough…? Ukai-kun?”
“...Now that was cold.”
“Huh?...?”
-Small Timeskip- [Score: Municipal Team-20, Karasuno-18]
“Heh! Not bad, kids. Not bad!” Shimada says as one of his teammates tells him it’s his serve. Shimada uses a jump float serve. The ball is heading toward Hinata. He gets ready to receive the ball but at the last second, it swerves in a different direction. Hinata dives for the ball but ends up face-planting onto the floor.
“Bwah Ha Ha! Check that out!” Shimada laughs.
“Someone sure is being mature.” Takinoue comments sarcastically
“Hmmm? What was that?” Takeda asks. “It didn’t seem like a particularly powerful serve from here, but…”
“It’s called a Jump Float serve.” Ukai interrupts with the answer. “You can do one without the jump, just from a standing position. The point is to hit the ball so it has no spin. That way when it’s in the air it’ll wobble erratically, curving or dipping unpredictably.”
“Oh! So it’s like a knuckleball in baseball! Interesting!”
“You can do it in soccer too. They even still call it a knuckleball, though they don’t use their hands. By the way, depending on the ball used in the game, it’ll move differently. The one we’re using today is a type that won’t swerve much…”
“Wait! Wait! Let me write this down!” Takeda says scrambling for something to take notes with.
“Do it again, Shimada!” One of the players encourages as said man serves again. Tanaka tries to receive it but fails due to the ball wobbling. This continues.
“That’s four in a row.” Ukai comments.
‘Gee, thanks, coach.’ You think sarcastically.
“That rookie pair might have a mean quick set, but everybody’s receiving sucks.” Ukai continues. “Especially the rookies.” The whistle is blown indicating that it’s the Municipal Team’s match point.
“Time to wrap this up!” Shimada declares as he serves once again. The ball flies toward Daichi, who receives it and passes it to Kageyama. The setter compliments his captain with a ‘Nice pass.’ Hinata runs to the net and jumps.
“You won’t get past us this time, shorty!” Takinoue exclaims as Ashai, another teammate, and he jump to block Hinata. Kageyama sets the ball to Tanaka, who is in the air on the other side of the net.
“Oops!” Asahi says as he follows the ball with his eyes.
“Gah!!” Takinoue looks at Tanaka.
“Hi there!!” Tanaka says. “Didja miss me?!” He asks as he spikes the ball, completely unmarked. Noya receives the ball, sending it to Suga as he gets praised.
“Suga!” Asahi calls for the ball. Suga smiles and calls to Ashai as he sets the ball to him. Hinata rushes to Asahi and jumps to block him. Asahi spikes the ball with so much force that when it hits Hinata’s hand he flinches. You wince and watch as the ball hits the floor earning the Municipal Team a point. This point secures them the second set win, in turn, it secures them the game. As the Municipal Team celebrates, Tanaka goes to Hinata.
“AAAUGH!! Hinata, I’m sorry, bro! I was totally free and clear on that hit too!” He says, hitting his forehead.
“N-No, that’s okay.” Hinata replies.
“Still, that was pretty awesome. You had them completely hooked! I’m almost kinda jealous. Couldn’t at least one of them mark me? I felt left out!” Tanaka then lowers his voice. “I’ll be counting on you next time too, bruh!”
“!! Y-Yes, sir!”
You walk over to the two.
“Hey, guys!” You say as they look at you and smile.
“Hey, (Y/N)!” Hinata greets happily.
“You guys did amazing! Hinata, that last rally was great. The way you pulled their attention was fantastic!” This causes the boy to blush. “And Tanaka, that spike was amazing and powerful!” Tanaka freezes before falling to his knees and crying about how their Angel praised him. “Oh! Hinata. Are your hands okay?” You ask, grabbing his hands to look at them. Hinata’s blush increases massively. “Ashai’s spike was really strong and I noticed you wince so I wanted to make sure you’re okay.”
“Y-Yeah. I-I’m okay.” Hinata assures flustered. You inspect his hands for a second longer before letting them go. Hinata is slightly disappointed, even though he was extremely flustered, he likes the feeling of your hands touching his.
“What about me, Angel?” Tanaka whines holding his hands toward you. You look at his hands and tell him he looks okay. “She said I look okay!” He celebrates. ‘Okay…’ You think. You look over to the Municipal Team and begin speaking.
“Alright guys, I’m going to go congratulate the others. See ya!” You wave, walking to the other team.
“Bye!” Hinata says as Tanaka is still freaking out.
“Excuse me.” You say walking to the original members of the Municipal Team, since they separated from the high schoolers. They stop to look at you.
“Yes?” Shimada replies.
“I wanted to congratulate you guys on your win. You all played amazingly.”
“Thank you…” Takinoue begins.
“Ah! I’m sorry! My name is (L/N) (Y/N).” You say bowing embarrassed.
“Nice to meet you, (L/N)-chan. I’m Takinoue Yusuke.”
“Nice to meet you too Takinoue Senpai.” You look at the other men waiting for them to introduce themselves.
“I’m Uchizawa Hidenori.”
“Mori Yukinari.” He says pointing to himself.
“And I’m Shimada Makoto.”
“It’s nice to meet you Uchizawa Senpai, Mori Senpai, Shimada Senpai.” You say looking at each man. “Shimada Senpai, your jump float serves were amazing!”
“Thank you, (L/N)-chan.”
“Please, (Y/N) is fine.” You smile at the four. Ashai, Suga, and Noya are talking which catches your attention. The four notices. You turn back to them. “If you’ll excuse me.” You bow. “It was nice meeting you Senpais. Congratulations again!” You say walking to your teammates.
“Suga! Asahi! Noya!” You get their attention.
“Hey, (Y/N).” Suga greets happily.
“Hey, (Y/N).” Asahi greets.
“Hey, Angel!” Noya says.
“Congratulations you guys! You all did amazing!”
“Thank you!” They all say.
“Suga, your setting was spot on! And Ashai, great spikes! Especially the last one! And Noya, your receives were phenomenal. That last one was just…wow!” They all blush and thank you. “I’m really proud of you three.” This shocks them. “I know I haven’t known you guys for very long and I may not know the full story, and may never, but seeing you three play together was heartwarming. Sure, at first it was a bit rocky and awkward but after you called for the ball that first time…” You look at Ashai. “...everything seemed to fall right back in place.” All three of them look at you in shock. “You guys looked so happy playing together after that. I can’t wait to see all of you guys play together. It’s going to be…I don’t know the right words but I can’t wait!” They stare at you, lost for words. You look between the three, and suddenly feeling embarrassed, you speak. “Well, I’m going to go talk to the others. See ya!” You walk away with a slight blush.
‘Wow…’ They think simultaneously while blushing. ‘She’s too sweet…’
-A Few Minutes Later-
“Man! I don’t get half of what happened, but ain’t the glory days of high school great?” Shimada says to Mori. “Call for the ball, Ace,” and all that. Oh, to be that young again!”
“Yeah, yeah! “As long as you’ve got me, you’re the greatest.” I wish I coulda said that in high school.” You look over to see Kageyama and Noya blushing. This causes you to giggle, only making it worse.
“You bet! You kids sure made us old farts feel extra old tonight!” Takinoue exclaims happily.
“Um, w-we’re sorry.” Suga apologizes.
“Naaah, it’s okay. There’s still a rawness to you guys…but once you all start working together, I wouldn't be surprised if you go places.” A huge smile spreads across your face.
“Thank you so much!” Everyone says at once.
“No prob.” Takinoue replies as the four men leave the gym.
“Right. First and foremost…receiving.” Ukai says addressing everyone.

-Last Time-
“AAAA” Asahi yells, frightened.
“GAAAH!!” Tanka yells worriedly.
“HINATA!!!” You scream, quickly running over to him.
You get to Hinata first, with the others arriving right after.
“Hinata! Are you okay?” You ask worriedly.
“...! OWWWW…” He replies.
“Aha! He lives!” Noya says.
“You okay, bro?” Tanaka asks.
“OHMYGOD. OHMYGOD. OHMYGOD. Are you okay I’m sorry I’m sorry!!!” Asahi panics.
“It’s his own stupid fault for zoning out like an idiot.” Tsukishima says nonchalantly.
“Tsukishima! Quit!” You scold, earning a “tch” and an eye roll.
“A-Ambulance! C-Call an Ambulance!!” Takeda freaks out.
“Calm down, sensei.” Ukai says.
Hinata begins to sit up, so you help him by telling him to move slowly.
“Oh, uh, it’s okay. I’m fine. Sorry to make you all worry.” Hinata says, rubbing his head.
“You sure? Maybe you should sit out a rally or two…” Daichi says.
“No! I’m fine! I promise!” Hinata says quickly. “I just…didn’t dodge all the way in time. Besides, I’m used to getting hit in the face!” ‘You shouldn’t be though…’ You think sweat dropping. “I’m very sorry!”
“Don’t be.” Suga smiles. Before you can say anything you feel a very familiar dark aura. You and Hinata look at the source, Kageyama. He’s pretty pissed off.
“What’d you think you were doing? Zoning out in the middle of a rally…” Kageyama asks.
“Um! Uh! I, ah!” Hinata tries to respond but he’s too scared.
‘The fact that Kageyama isn’t yelling is not a good thing…’ You think and know that Hinata is thinking the same thing.
“I know what you were thinking.”
“?!”
“You were thinking about how cool the Ace is but that all you’re good at is being a decoy, which is stupid and boring. You were wishing you were as tall and strong as Asahi so you could be an Ace too.”
“Enough Kageyama…” You say but are ignored.
“I…I was not!” Hinata defends but only earns a glare from Kageyama. “O-Okay…so, uh…maybe a little.”
“Once you realized our team had an Ace…aside from all the idolization or whatever…you got jealous.” Kageyama begins. “Quit letting your brain wander off onto stupid crap during a game.”
“...So I got a little jealous. So what?”
“Hinata…” You say softly.
“YOU’RE BIG AND TALL AND SKILLED ALREADY! YOU COULD NEVER UNDERSTAND WHAT IT’S LIKE FOR ME!!”
“Guys. Stop!”
Suddenly the gym doors open. An older man is standing in the doorway.
“Hey! What are you all still doing here? It’s time to close up!” He says. “Hurry and clean up.”
“Excuse me!” Takeda begins. “Could we please at least finish this game first?”
“But it’s awfully late…”
“I’ll take responsibility and supervise everyone!”
“Well…”
“Once we’ve finished, I will do all the final checks and make sure everything is properly locked up.”
You look at Hinata and see he’s sad and embarrassed. You go over to him.
“...Hey…Hinata…” You softly say. He looks at you. “Are you okay?” HE puts on a fake smile.
“Yup! All good!”
“You don’t have to fake it with me.” He looks slightly shocked and drops his “smile.”
“It’s my fault for delaying the game…”
“You can’t blame yourself. You got hit in the head with a volleyball. At least you wanted to continue playing. Others would’ve taken Daichi’s offer of sitting out.”
“But then I had to go and yell at Kageyama for it.”
“What Kageyama did and said was completely uncalled for. You were upset and defending yourself. It was admirable.” This causes Hinata to blush.
“Thanks, (Y/N).”
“You’re welcome. Now…Are you hurting anywhere? Do you have a headache? Dizzy? Nauseous?”
“N-No. I’m okay. I promise.”
“Good.” You lightly punch his shoulder. “Don’t make me worry like that!”
“! I-I’m sorry! I-I didn’t -” Hinata can’t finish his statement because you suddenly hugged him.
“But I’m glad you’re okay.” You say hugging him tighter. This causes Hinata to turn bright red. You stop hugging him just as Takeda closes the gym door.
“Sorry, Sensei. Thanks for that.” Daichi says and Takeda turns around and gives him a thumbs up. “Okay, everyone! Let’s get back to playing!”
The game is about to resume but Kageyama gets Asahi and Takinoue’s attention.
“This rally.. I’m going to set the ball for him.” He says pointing to Hinata. “Please try as hard as you can to block him.” Hinata, Takinoue, and Asahi look at him confusedly. ‘What are you playing at Kageyama?’ You wonder.
“Hey, Hey! You trying to taunt us now?” Takinoue asks, annoyed.
“Yes, sir!” It’s a blatant taunt! I’m sorry for being disrespectful!!” Kageyama replies bowing. This shocks both you and Takinoue.
“Ha! Well aren’t you a gutsy kid! I like that! Okay, Then! We’ll take you up on that!” Takinoue replies.
“Thank you, sir!” Kageyama says before staring at Asahi intently and then walking away.
“What the heck is that rookie thinking? A quick set is effective precisely because you can’t predict it. Telling the other guys it’s coming means he’s gonna run smack into a triple block. And if that happens short stuff doesn’t stand a chance.” Ukai comments.
“...True…” Takeda begins. “If he runs headlong into a block…that may be the case, yes.” He finishes as Ukai looks at him questioningly.
‘Augh! Stupid Kageyama. What’s he doing telling the other team what we’re going to do next? There’s no way I can punch the ball through blockers that tough. He knows that!’ Hinata thinks nervously before looking at Kageyama, whose back is turned, frustrated.
“Hinata. The way you are right now…you suck. You’re a scrub who’s fast and kinda knows how to jump. That’s it.” Kageyama says darkly.
“...?”
“The Ace is a player who can put the entire team on his back and carry it.” Kageyama continues. “That’s someone you’ll never be.”
“!!” Hinata looks like he’s going to cry.
“Hey, um. Don’t you think…” Asahi begins,
“Yo, man!” Tanaka says.
“BUT!” Kageyama continues again, interrupting Asahi and Tanaka. “As long as you’re with me, you’re the greatest!!” Hinata looks at the setter in shock. “Yeah, Asahi-san’s spikes are super powerful! And yeah, he can go straight through even a triple block!”
“Huh?! Um! N-Not all the time…No, but…” Asahi stutters at KAgeyama’s words.
“Stop acting so modest!” Noya scolds the Ace.
“So what about you? All the times I’ve put the ball up for you… have you ever run into a block? Ever?” Kageyama asks, earning another look of shock from the middle blocker.
The whistle is blown and Shimada serves the ball. Ennoshita receives it as Hinata looks at the other team's blockers and begins getting intimidated.
“Dodge!!” Kageyama yells, pulling Hinata from his thoughts. “It’s not like there’s anything else you can do…you scrub!!”
Hinata runs to the left side of the court with the opponent's blockers following him. He bends his legs and swings his arms back getting ready to jump. ‘That’s right. If we can’t go through…’ Hinata thinks.
“We go around.” He says before jumping back and running to the right side of the court. This surprises Asahi, Takinoue, and Ukai.
‘I hate getting blocked! I hate getting stopped!!’ Hinata thinks as he jumps into the air. ‘If even one blocker gets up in front of me…there’s no way I can beat it the way I am now. I can’t play like the Ace plays. But…! “As long as you’re with me…you’re the greatest!”’ Hinata spikes the ball, surprising everyone, and earns his team a point.
“Yeah, you’re no Ace! But with your speed…your jumps…and my setting…we can take on any blockers out there!” Kageyama declares. “The point the Ace scores by busting through a block…and the point you score by going around them…It’s still a point! Even if you don’t have the fancy “Ace” label you rack up points in games! They pay attention to you, and follow you…and that frees up our other hitters! Including the Ace!! Right?!” Kageyama finishes and whirls his head toward Tanaka.
“Dwah?! Y-Yeah!” The second year begins. “He’s got a good point, Bro! There’s a huge difference in how well our offense works…depending on whether or not you’ve got your decoy game up and running.”
“Despite all that…do you still hate the part you play on this team?! Do you still think it’s boring and uncool?!” Hinata doesn’t answer. He stands still thinking until he looks at his stinging hand.
“...I don’t…”
“What?”
“I don’t think that!”
“Good!!”
Nishinoya is gaping at the two as Suga chuckles. Hinata looks at Asahi.
“That was a really amazing spike you did.” Asahi compliments the first year.
“!! Thank you!!” Hinata says with a blush.
“Hey, Kageyama…” You say catching his attention. He turns to look at you. “That was sweet. What you did for Hinata.” His eyes widen and a blush creeps to his cheeks. He doesn’t know how to respond. “But…maybe next time…be a bit nicer.” You say tilting your head to the side with a closed-eyed smile that’s a mix of sweet and threatening. Kageyama‘s blush increases so he looks away.
“W-Whatever…” He says.
“Awesome! Now I think you know what to do.” You say as the setter goes to Daichi.
“I’m very sorry for interrupting the game again!!” He apologizes as he bows.
“Um! N-No, it’s okay.” Daichi replies.
“We’re all finished now, so…” Kageyama begins as he stands next to Hinata.
