Synopsis: sometime love isn't as romantic as someone think and the truth can hurt more than they thought, Y/N is about to learn that the hard way

I felt cold. Really cold. But at the same time, everything felt numb.
So this was death?
People usually have this image of depression: someone dressed in black, sitting alone, always looking gloomy. But that's not what it always looks like.
Until my last day, I was the cheerful kid everyone went to when they had a problem. I was the person who would help anyone if I could. I was always smiling, and people often described me as a social butterfly.
So how did I end up like this?
You know, sometimes things aren't what they seem.
At the beginning of the year, I started dating Tanaka. He was one of the beloved teammates of my brother, Daiki.
Daiki always talked about Karasuno's team with such fondness that I never thought badly of any of them.
I'd had a crush on Tanaka for a while, so when he asked me out on a date, I was overjoyed.
We went on one date, then another, and eventually I lost count of how many we'd been on.
I gave him my first kiss, my first time, and every piece of my heart because I loved him dearly.
Loved. Not love.
One day, while walking through the corridor, I heard him laughing with some people from my class. Curious, I decided to listen in.
It was the worst decision of my life.
I heard him laughing along with his friends as he talked about how easy the bet had been.
What bet you might ask ? The bet to make me fall in love with him.
Then I heard his friends joke about giving him even more money for everything we'd done together since those had apparently been part of other bets too.
So that was all I was?
A bet?
Unable to take it anymore, I stepped out from my hiding place and confronted him.
He didn't even try to defend himself.
What a shame.
Soon enough, the entire school knew about the bet and about how stupid I had been for falling for it.
I couldn't stand the stares anymore, but I kept acting as though nothing had happened.
Even Daiki, when I cried to him about the situation, reminded me that he'd warned me not to get too close to Tanaka.
Even my own brother seemed to leave me alone with my pain... As the weeks passed, my mental state slowly worsened.
Yet I kept smiling.
I kept pretending everything was fine.
But eventually, I couldn't ignore the feeling anymore.
I didn't want to live in a world that felt so cruel. A world where the people I loved most blamed me. A world where people could hurt others and walk away without consequences. A world where I had to fake my own happiness.
I felt completely alone.
Now, as the cold spread through my body and everything faded away, I could barely feel anything at all.
The water around me had turned crimson red, and my limbs felt heavier with every passing second.
My vision blurred, the world grew quieter. My body was slowly feeling more and more numb.
Until there was nothing left for me to feel. Maybe this world simply wasn't meant for me.

You stare at your math homework, scrunching your nose in uncertainty. You prop up your elbow on the desk to rest your cheek up on your hand. Scribbles on top of scribbles are written on your scratch paper as you try to figure out an answer to the problem given.
A knock on your door breaks you out of your focus, "Come in!" You shout.
The knob clicks as a familiar figure walks in, its Ryu. He comes in with the usual smile on his face. His eyes scan the room, looking for something. "Hey have you seen my jacket? Kinda need it else daichi is gonna kick my ass again" He scratches his nape, troubled.
You look around before spotting it under the duvet of your bed, "Yeah...bro, its over there." You point to your bed, trying to act normal after what you had said. You knew that he hated being called 'bro', whining that its for 'teammates only!'. He much prefers being called the usual pet names. What a sappy dude.
He raises a brow, tilting his head to the side as he slowly walks to pick up the jacket. "What'd you just say?" He turns to you with dramatic slowness.
"What?" You feigned innocence, tilting your head as well, following in suit. "I said its over there?" You repeated the same statement, leaving out the 'bro' this time. "No, no, no... I mean after that. What did you call me?" He shakes his head as he sits on the floor beside your chair. He genuinely looks so bewildered you almost break out of character.
"...Bro?" You finally say.
He groans as he buries his head into your lap, "Baby... told you not to call me that" He whines, a subtle pout forming on his lips. "Why not?" You began to tease further. He grumbles in response. He knows you're playing dumb to get a rise out of him. "You know why" He responds, looking up.
"Hmm... Dont think I do..." You bring a finger up to your chin, eyes looking up with eyebrows furrowed upwards, pretending to be thinking. Its almost comical to look at. He deadpans at you, frustration growing, "You're being a brat, babe".
"No I'm not" You protest, a slight smile forming on your lips. "You totally are" He shakes his head, picking up on the subtle smile on your lips. "I'm totally not. Plus what are you even gonna do about it" You continue to argue, pushing his buttons. He squints his eyes and gave a grin, "What am I gonna do about it? I know exactly what".
He stood up before lunging at you. He wraps his arms around your waist as he began to attack your neck with obnoxiously loud, sloppy, open-mouthed kisses. "Bro this Bro that! Who's the bro now, hm?" He says in between kisses. You cant help but let out laughs coming from deep within your chest. He picks you up and lays you down the bed, continuing his attack. He began to tickle at your sides. His fingers wriggling up and down.
"Y-hah!-you are!" You exclaimed in between uncontrollable giggles. "Oh I'm so hurt!" He emphasized, bringing a hand up to his chest, pretending to be offended, much dramatically.
Both of you continued till you were chasing your breaths, blanketed by each other's joy and warmth.
i have been ill the past few days and was wondering if you would do a fluffy sick drabble of tanaka taking care of reader (or of how karasuno would take care of reader if you'd rather) i'm a new follower, but have seen a lot of your works and have loved them! i hope you are doing well and that exams went/are going alright 🤍 keep up all your amazing work!!! \(^o^)/

you weren’t dying. you were pretty sure you weren’t dying. at worst, it was just a mild fever, the kind that makes your head heavy and your limbs lazy, the kind where you just want to curl up under a blanket and watch the ceiling. but if you asked tanaka, your sniffles were an extinction-level event. the moment you texted him that you “felt kinda sick,” it was like pressing a big red emergency button labeled “send tanaka into full-blown protective mode.”
he showed up at your apartment within fifteen minutes. fifteen. not even amazon prime could beat that delivery time. he didn’t even knock like a normal person—he rattled your doorknob, called your name through the wood, and when you shuffled to open it, he stood there looking like a deranged knight with two grocery bags in each hand.
“move,” he commanded softly, like the word itself would break you if he said it any louder. “i got you. i got everything. meds. soup. eight kinds of tea. vitamin c tablets. throat spray. some weird herbal thing my sister swears by. a thermometer. a backup thermometer. also a plushie because i thought you’d like it.”
you blinked up at him, your hair a mess, your nose a little red. “ryū, i’m not—”
“shh.” he stepped inside and immediately kicked off his shoes, his entire body a bundle of tense energy and devotion. “you don’t have to be brave for me.”
it should’ve been embarrassing how soft your heart went at that. but there he was, putting the groceries on your counter like he was setting up an altar, muttering little curses under his breath at “whatever bacteria thought they could mess with his girl.” his girl. he didn’t even realize he said it.
he guided you back to the couch, his palm warm and steady on the small of your back. it was like being ushered around by a very intense, very affectionate golden retriever—except this golden retriever had shaved sides, a loud voice, and a tendency to look at you like you were the only thing that ever mattered.
“blanket,” he said, and when you reached for the thin throw draped over the couch, he practically growled. “no, no, no. you’re sick. you need my hoodie.”
before you could argue, he’d stripped off his own jacket—a thick karasuno sweatshirt—and draped it over you. it smelled like him: a little like clean sweat, a little like laundry detergent, a lot like comfort. he tucked it around your shoulders like a cape. “see? now you’re officially invincible.”
you laughed, weakly. “invincible?”
he crouched so he was eye-level with you, eyebrows drawn together in genuine concern. “don’t laugh, babe. i’m serious. you’re fragile. like… like a limited-edition figurine. you’re the last cherry blossom in winter. the final french fry at the bottom of the bag. you can’t just be out here getting sick.”
your face burned hotter than your fever. you tried to hide it behind the hoodie sleeves. “i’m really not that fragile, ryū.”
“you are to me,” he said, so softly you almost didn’t catch it.
and then he was bustling again, because sitting still made him restless. he set a kettle to boil, rummaged through your cupboards like he owned the place, muttering about “hydration” and “warmth” like some kind of dad at a little league game.
he brought you soup, but it wasn’t just soup. it was an event. he set the bowl down in front of you with a dramatic flourish. “i, tanaka ryūnosuke, have personally taste-tested this instant ramen for poison. it’s safe for my princess!”
“wow, thanks, gallant knight,” you teased, but your voice cracked.
his eyes snapped to yours. “too hot? too salty? too anything? i’ll fix it. i’ll make you something else. just say the word.”
“it’s perfect,” you murmured. “just perfect.”
the way he exhaled like he’d been holding his breath for hours made you feel like you’d given him a medal.
then came the drinks. he lined up mugs of tea like a chemist, carefully steeping each one for the exact recommended time. he even blew on the surface before handing it to you, like you were some fairytale princess who couldn’t burn her tongue. and every time you coughed, his hand shot out to rub your back, his brows furrowed like he wanted to punch the germs straight out of you.
at one point, he disappeared into the kitchen for a suspiciously long time. when he came back, he was holding a damp washcloth. “for your forehead,” he said. “i saw it in a movie once.”
he pressed it to your skin with such gentle fingers, you thought your heart might melt right there.
“ryū,” you whispered. “i feel bad you’re doing all this.”
he shook his head violently, his shaved scalp catching the lamplight. “nah. nah. you don’t get it. i like taking care of you. i’d do it every day. i’d do it forever!” his voice dropped lower, rougher. “i don’t want anyone else touching you when you’re like this. you’re mine to look after.”
your pulse skipped. you should’ve been scared maybe, but you weren’t. it felt… weirdly safe. like even if the world crumbled, tanaka would stand there between you and the rubble, teeth bared.
he stayed with you the entire afternoon, switching between fussing over you and sitting next to you quietly, holding your hand. at one point, you started to drift off. half-asleep, you felt him adjust the blanket, his thumb stroking your knuckles.
“you’re gonna get sick too if you stay,” you murmured.
“then i’ll get sick,” he replied instantly. “and you’ll take care of me! that’s fair, right?”
you smiled faintly. “deal.”
he stayed until the evening. by then, your fever had dipped and the world felt a little less heavy. you leaned against him, your head on his shoulder. he smelled like warmth and sunlight and a little bit of sweat from running around your apartment.
“thanks, ryū,” you said softly.
he didn’t say anything back for a moment. then you felt him kiss the top of your hair—quick, almost like he couldn’t help himself. “anytime. every time.”
you tilted your head up, and he froze. his eyes flicked down to your lips, then back to your eyes. he looked like a puppy waiting for permission to jump onto the couch.
“you can,” you said, barely above a whisper.
his breath caught. then he leaned down and kissed you. not the wild, showy kind you’d expect from him, but something careful. reverent. like you were glass and he was afraid of breaking you. his lips were warm, a little chapped, tasting faintly of the honey tea he’d been drinking.
when he pulled back, he pressed his forehead to yours. “don’t scare me like that again,” he muttered. “when you texted me, i thought—i don’t even know. just… don’t.”
“i just had a fever,” you said, smiling.
“yeah, well, next time text me ‘ryū i’m fine but sick’ or something. because i’m telling you, my heart left my body. it left. it’s probably still running here from practice.”
you laughed, weak but genuine. “you’re ridiculous.”
“you love it!”
“i do,” you admitted.
he grinned then, the full tanaka grin, big and bright and a little wild. “good. because you’re stuck with me now. your personal nurse-slash-knight-slash-grocery-hauler. i’ll fight off any germ that tries to touch you!”

Tanaka… oh, Tanaka. The sweet man that he is 🥹 He’s always been the kind of boyfriend who secretly thrives when you’re clingy with him. He’ll never admit it out loud (too shy, too proud), but the truth is he loves it when you hold onto him like you never want to let go. The tighter your arms are around him, the calmer he feels. It’s a quiet, grounding reminder that you want him here, in your space, in your life. After everything, he needs that reassurance more than he can say.
Certified workaholic, yes. But if you text him in the middle of the day with “date? ” he’s already on his way. He will literally drop whatever he’s doing — work will still be there later, but you? He refuses to make you feel like you come second to anything. He’s so determined about this, almost stubbornly so.
Post-Termina, things… change. The festival left its mark on him in ways he doesn’t talk about much. He becomes deeply protective, almost to the point of paranoia. Some nights he comes home shaking, the images still replaying in his head, and the only thing that calms him down is holding you. At one point, it got so bad he didn’t go to work for two weeks. He stayed curled up against you, arms locked around your waist like if he let go, you’d vanish too.
Physical contact becomes a need for him. If you’re out together, his hand is in yours — no exceptions. It’s almost instinctual now; his thumb brushing your knuckles, occasionally squeezing just to check you’re still there.
Every little moment with you feels like proof that you’re both still here, alive, and that’s something Tanaka doesn’t take for granted anymore.
