Don’t forget the rest of the package delivery industry. There are men and women (and neither!) who stay up until 6 am loading the semi trucks and airplanes that get your boxes to the local hub they’re delivered from, and then there are the people who are up at 3 am to load the package cars. I’ve done that job before, btw. It is not easy and not fun. (Currently I’m a training supervisor for package loaders.)

Also fun fact: a lot of the people in the package delivery industry are artists of some kind. The work is hard, but the pay is decent and during the off season, you have a lot of extra time you can devote to an art.

What News Australia’s Tightlacing Article Failed to Mention

A few days ago I was interviewed by a news station about the difference between waist training and tightlacing, what corsets do for me, and the overall ethos of the corset community.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, my words were spliced and used out of context. For anyone who is interested in knowing the FULL story, read my response on my blog here.

So right now I’m making a “WHAT???“ face, because I’m wondering what sort of doctor they talked to for that ‘news’ piece and seeing as said doctor seems to be clueless about where a woman’s urethra is located (a corset is NOT normally going to be near it much less do any compressing of it) ladies in Australia maybe don’t go to that doctor. The hack job by the reporter is bad enough, but Judas Priest wouldn’t it be hilarious if the doctor quoted was a dermatologist or an ear nose and throat doc? Please say it’s not either....LOL.

If she wanted to be so...creative...with the piece she could have used the same crap written about the subject of wearing corsets we’ve all seen many times over - tossed about in her personal style of writing. But why not be straight about her true intentions for writing the piece and stick a giant all caps DANGEROUS THING label on it and hit “publish”. May the reporter find themselves shoe-less on a road paved with Legos and the only mode of transportation they have are their feet.

I’ve hinted at it before, but let me come right out with it: I’m a field engineer for an infrastructure contractor on a full-time professional basis.  So, what does that mean?  Well, my job duties range from managing construction crews, procuring our building materials, surveying, and occasional physical labor.

And, as I’m sure you can guess, that doesn’t make for a particularly waist-training-conducive lifestyle.  Believe me, I’ve tried it.  There was even one time when I wore one of my favorite corsets to work, only to end up doing some “emergency shoveling” to fill in an open hole.  The end result of that was me getting some insane oblique and abdominal muscle cramps that still deter me from waist training at work today.

So, what’s a person to do?  Give up waist training?  Keep trying, even knowing that most any corset would likely end up leaving me impeded on a day-to-day basis?  I didn’t want to negatively effect my ability to basically get things done at work.  My solution, then, was to create something entirely new that fits my personal needs in a very active job.

I shy away from using the word “revolutionary”, but I’m confident it’s the truth when I say that this is a first: A steel-boned corset designed specifically for those with a very active lifestyle or in a “blue collar” profession.

The features of this corset are so specific, it’s pretty clear that I’ve made this with my own demands for daily wear in mind.

Coutil at front and back panels for longevity.

Powermesh panels along sides for extra flexibility and coolness (the thermal sort, though it is quite stylish).

Zipper closure for low profile below clothing.

Waist tape to maintain waist measurement when cinching down the corset.

Flexible binding at top and bottom of corset eliminates back ooze and hip pinching.  A stiff type of binding would eliminate the benefits of a flexible mesh fabric entirely.

Spiral steel boning at back closure for ultimate comfort along the contours of the back.  Note that it takes some patience in tightening any corset with spiral bones at the back, though.

Flat steel boning at zipper closure for extra support along front of corset (but not too much).

Steel boning at each seam between the 12 total panels (6 on each side).

Suspenders at back of corset to keep jeans in their place when bending or moving.

There are a few corsets out there that perform some similar functions to this, but nothing satisfied me.  So, as I often try to do, if there’s something that I wish existed, and it doesn’t, I bring it into the universe.

While I continue to perfect the design, I still want to extend this corset to you all.  For now, I’m going to offer a custom version of this, the “Field Engineer” corset, for a pretty damn cheap price on my Etsy store.

Even if you don’t care to have one of your own, I’d love to hear: what do you think?

Hi there!  Thanks for the compliment, and thank you for proposing that question so kindly. :)

I’m sure you can guess that you aren’t the only person to question the activity of “waist training” or simply wearing corsets in general.  But you might be pleased (or at least relieved!) to learn that corsets aren’t even as remotely harmful as they are often purported by media to be.  As with almost any fashion trend (corsets and their resurgence notwithstanding), the media as a whole LOVES to play of the “dangers” of whatever is popular at the time.  Why?  Because it’s exciting to hear about how some people are just absolutely ruining themselves for fashion!

Like with many things that get that kind of negative attention, corsets are so incredibly demure compared to their reputation.  Back in the Victorian some medical professionals would publish “ideas” about what wearing a corset just might do to the body (no real research behind it), and that’s where some of those awful diagrams of a human body subjected to wearing a corset (you know those ones with the squished organs and re-shaped abdomen?) come from: conjecture.  Unfortunately, today they are often considered as straight-up fact.  Remember, even our ancestors had false information fed to them!

But to actually answer the question of “do corsets squish your insides?”, no.  I always like to compare waist training with a corset to weight lifting: if you have the right equipment, use proper technique, and take your time, then you will get great results without hurting yourself.  It’s tough to quickly describe a “proper corset”, but know that if it’s made right and for your unique body, then it will never, ever hurt.  It’s astonishing really, how comfortable one can be!

As for using the “right technique” and taking your time, it’s about slowly allowing your body to gain flexibility.  In the same way that you can’t force an otherwise inflexible person to touch their toes the first time they’ve ever tried, you certainly can’t tighten a corset on a person the first time they try it on!  It takes months and years for a person to grow accustomed to that little bit of pressure placed on the midsection caused by a corset.  And it’s a slow, gradual process that will cause absolutely no damage if done carefully.  Basically, you should never feel pain.  If you do, it’s not right!

But still, are you squishing your organs?  Nope!  Remember that the human innards are soft and flexible.  It’s the reason that we can eat a big meal, contort ourselves in a yoga class, and even carry a fetus, all without any eminent detriment to ourselves.  When there is a bit of pressure on the middle, the body can (as odd as it sounds), readjust internally.  The stomach can adjust itself upward a little bit, and the kidneys can comfortably shift a bit further down.  Both when we have a very full stomach or when we wear a corset.  And, when we finish digesting, deliver a child, or take off a corset, those soft organs will move right on back to where they were before.  Again, it’s just astonishing to remember what the human body is capable of!

A corset is, both historically and now, generally not worn with much reduction at all.  For me, the corset is rarely more than just a couple inches smaller than my own natural waist, meaning that instead of making me look smaller, it just gives me a different silhouette - not unlike a nice bra!  Oftentimes, the support is what really helps folks, too.  For some, it’s the sensation of a nice hug all day long.  For others, it’s a great way to get some back support when sitting at a computer desk all day.  Professionally and precisely made corsets can even function similarly to back braces!

Remember that a lot of what is made very visible to this world (Doctor Oz, Huntington Post, etc.) is either misconstrued for ratings, or simply poorly researched.  Corsetry is an oft-condemned art, both in the construction of the garments and the enthusiasm in wearing them.

You should never feel the pressure to agree, but I hope you can understand why there are so many of us who truly love and cherish this particular fashion foundation - both for it’s aesthetic and functional uses.

Oooh. I’d be interested in one of these for daily wear. Would the suspenders be removable or are they stitched into place? They at least look adjustable?

The suspenders are definitely optional, and very adjustable! They don’t come off, as it seemed more apt to make them integral to the construction of the corset, but they do pretty much double in length, depending on how you adjust them.

Although I understand the intricacies of how non-matrix sizes are priced higher, i still wish they were priced like the matrix range and widely available like the matrix range. Meaning I’d like to buy a 32G/GG while it’s on sale for the low low price of $25 at a store known to do these more than twice a year. It’s like looking at a bra on Amazon you’ve been searching for, which is listed as “certain sizes and colors on sale” but then you check for it and find out no matter what that sale never involves your size. NEVER! Just finding a few different brands/styles that work was hard enough without the online shopping powers-that-be deciding i can’t have those or similar in my size on sale along with discontinuing whatever style I like most.

The thing with this crap is, I’m 27. This shit is like water off a duck’s back with me. I noticed her comments, reported her, and blocked her. But let’s flash back ten years shall we. Let’s take a look at where 17 year old Penny was… She had people saying things like this to her fairly frequently. She had people telling her she had no value because they thought she was unattractive on a fairly daily basis, and you know where this left her? Inches from fucking suicide every single day.  When you do this to someone… When you leave these comments… You’re not just vomiting into the wind. You’re personally attacking someone. You’re bullying them. There isn’t any way around that fact. If you do stuff like this to people, you are, objectively, a bad person… If your comment doesn’t directly cause someone to kill themselves, it doesn’t make you any less of a bad person. The words you choose to share, and the way you choose to share them have zero purpose but to strip someone of their self worth. These words are meant to kill. Just the Facts, Ms: Timeless Trends Cincher – New Hourglass Silhouette

Quick and Dirty: Even just out of the box it arrived in this corset is surprisingly comfortable! The laces, on the other hand, are definitely going to be swapped out for better quality – with all the attention paid to the details of this corset the cheap and scratchy ribbon is not the sort of finishing touch one would expect. The front is low enough not to be a problem when wearing an underwire bra (even for a 30GG/32G!) and the higher back means that the bra band can fit neatly underneath without any odd gapping, pinching, or muffin-top.  I love the curved shaping of the hips, a design feature that I have admired in many a corsetiere’s work, but simply do not have the torso length to wear (or a budget for custom). Timeless Trends’ new hourglass silhouette is a great move in the curvy direction.

Quick and Dirty: Though the process of putting a corset on when it has no busk is somewhat a challenge, the stealth ability is unmatched.  I previously ordered the RTW white etoile underbust from Meschantes’ Etsy storefront and had no problems, so after seeing a listing for the same corset design with customizable options and some research into the experiences other people have had I contacted them via Etsy and Sandra created a custom listing for an all black satin custom measurements in the etoile corset pattern for a very reasonable price.  I submitted the measurements form about a week before sending the full payment and incredibly, my corset was finished and shipped about a week after my payment method had cleared. The laces require some major extra length to have any hope of getting the corset on. It’s also easier to put your arms in first to pull down over your head into proper position and just skip trying to pull it up over the hips. The laces are shown below laid out across the width of a queen sized bed.

Woooo, they’re finally here! Back in June, myself and Sarah (beside me in the first picture) travelled to Bangkok, Thailand to redesign the Timeless Trends corset patterns.

The corsets still have their “essence” (they are still immediately recognizable as Timeless Trends) but they all now feature a larger rib spring and hip spring, comfortable cupped ribs, and a neutral lumbar curve - these corset patterns were draped on a human body, so they are surprisingly comfortable.

We’ve also added extra features such as an extra pair of garter tabs (now 6 instead of 4) and front modesty placket.

We’ve worked hard to consider every element of the construction process of these corsets so we can preserve their lifetime warranty. I’m extremely proud of the results!

They did have some solid black in the first batch, but they were ALL reserved for another wholesaler who bought them on backorder [*grumble*] so unfortunately we have to wait another month to get the next batch of them - but we absolutely have plans to stock the solid black (and other best sellers like the beige).

I prefer this style to the 301, as it has more bones spaced closer together and a pointed lower front which helps to pull up and in the small pooch that corsets can cause on me.

Design note: as is standard for all Orchard corsets, there are modesty panels on both.

Why do you like Orchard corsets?

I did some research on them and found that they were an awesome source for OTR corsets. I wanted to start waist-training, but I didn’t want to pay for a custom corset without knowing how my body would react, or how I would react. They also offered corsets for short torsos, training videos, FAQ videos, and customer reviews.  So they definitely sold me. And I got a promo code from Lucy’s Corsetry. 

Since I got my first corset from them (my only actually) I’ve gotten it 98% of the way closed! I’ve gone from a 33″ waist to a 31″ waist. I’m going to wait until I’ve closed it and kept it closed for some time before moving on to a second corset. 

If I decide to continue reducing, I’m not sure if I will do another OTR or if I will get a custom one. Price is a factor, but what do others think? After a first successful OTR run, have others gone for custom, or stuck with a brand they know works? Send me suggestions!

I’ve bought several corsets from Orchard in the last few years, all of which I wear on a rotating basis (mostly, some are in the queue a bit less after seasoning because they are satin which I tend to wear when going out somewhere and want to keep them nice...) - the only corsets from Orchard I don’t wear at all are the two 511 overbust originally purchased for photo shoots and realized they are impossible to sit in for me but were fine for the photos as long as I didn’t attempt to pose in any way resembling a seated position. Since then I’ve taken the laces out of both to use with other corsets but the corsets themselves are neatly tucked away into a drawer in my closet so they won’t get dusty or have something put on top of them that might cause damage or bends. In terms of quality and affordability my Orchard corsets are great, and luckily for me their OTR measurements work with my own quite well - though I acknowledge that there are many out there who these measurements do not work for. My only gripe with the many corset purchase transactions is that FedEx seems determined to make me have to drive to one of their locations every time an order is supposed to be delivered to my door - those ridiculous FedEx drivers are lazy about deliveries here in SoCal.

Honestly all but one of the corsets I own is OTR, and largely because I tend to do well with the big 3 measurements the companies use for their OTR styles, additionally the lower price points are nice, but I wouldn’t choose to buy a corset that didn’t suit my measurements regardless of a low price. Doing that would kind of defeat the purpose, since such a corset wouldn’t see much wear. I also stealth a lot, so minor aesthetic concerns (e.g. fashion fabric layer wrinkles, less than perfect stitches on the binding) don’t bother me as much as it might bother others.

One I can still wear a bra with and not get pinched from the overlap. I’m a 32G/GG, and while I put up with the problem and pain of an underwire bra with my corsets, it’s only because there’s not much in the way of alternatives that don’t sacrifice support or finances.
