Howdy! Hope you are well. Is there any chance we’ll get a return to DnD planes or characters? It feels like there is still a lot of untapped potential with characters characters and stories

I think a return to D&D is more likely than not. They do work in the building. : )

I want the return to D&D to be more careful. Unlike Magic, D&D sources and adventures never release worldwide at once and most book don't get translation at all, so translations might differ from card and books that gets released later or not even their source gets released, which is infuriating. Or just better communication between translators, I guess.

On the same note, Japanese releases of AFR and CLB were absolute dud. Not a lot of existing Magic fans tried to pick up D&D (unlike Avatar: the Last Airbender) due to lack of popularity, lack of products and simply lack of players to play with. D&D side of WotC Japan have been trying to - there were Honor Among Thieves and Baldur's Gate 3, there's going to be a tie-in anime called Otherworldly Munchkin, but neither WotC or community were powerful just enough to get the popularity out of the echo chamber. So yes, I don't want a D&D collab until Japan catches up for some amount and gets 2024 ruleset is finally released. I just get sad.

Is there any internal push for bringing back products that helped newer players dive into FNM with ready to play standard decks like challenger or event decks?

I don’t think more pre-constructed Standard decks are an impossibility.

Japan WANTS them. Japanese TCG scene is a lot more competitive (partially because there's less "partying" in here) and they wouldn't feel like they're actually getting on-board with low-power Starter Decks. Local c ompetitors in have done that a lot - like Duel Masters and Yu-Gi-Oh releasing incredibly high-powered deck - as onboarding products.

In your most recent making magic you talk about "story based" vs "game based" properties, and I thought that was an interesting distinction to make, especially with the Final Fantasy UB tentpole set on the horizon, where pretty much every Final Fantasy game are extremely story-driven experiences. Where do you think that sort of "story game" falls into that distinction?

There are video games that are more story driven (aka all players experience the same story in the same sequence), and those have qualities that will match elements of story-based properties. Note that each property is different and has to be adjusted for.

They looked like a sliding scale, not a binary choice. Some story-heavy games could handle both in a same set.

From Greater Inkopolis comes H2Whoa, with some refreshing BGM for battles! Despite having just formed, this band has already attracted tons of attention. The rock-loving youths of the Splatlands are puzzled, but can't hide their interest, saying "The pretentious lyrics and visuals are kinda annoying, but the candidness of it is fresh."

One radio station in Splatsville gave one of their songs a heavy amount of play, and H2Whoa began to garner attention. Time to introduce, that song, called "Aquasonic". It's a rather incorrect translation in one part.

正直 isn't about H2Whoa's lyrics and visuals, but the youth in question was being honest.

More accurate translation should be:

"The pretentious lyrics and visuals are kinda annoying, but to be honest, that's the fresh part of it.”

I loved AFR mechanically and flavorfully as a hybrid between two properties. I know it's not perfect, but what set is?

What lessons have R&D learned based on the apparent failure of the set? I feel like it really isn't that AFR is problematic, but that's my personal feeling. What factors led to the decision to call it a failure?

Failure? Who’s causing it a failure? It’s looking to be one of the best-selling sets in the history of the game. I’ll officially call it “not a failure”.

There IS an objective failure in AFR: translation quality control. In Japanese, some cards like Wild Shape or Volo, Guide to Monsters did get neat translation based on existing D&D materials, but many other cards (especially flavor text) were either inconsistent with existing D&D materials (including character names like Wulfgar or Delina) or outright failed to capture the meaning (e.g. ”earth” elemental plane is translated as our “Earth” in Xorn’s flavor text). 

I heard some other languages like French had lot of these (e.g. Owlbear being Ours-Hibou instead of Hibours, a pun.)

1) Would you like to see Magic have cards with other IPs on them, yes or no?

2) If, yes, how would you like us to do them?

1. Yes. 2. D&D: bring on the full set. Other IPs: Cards that are designed to be a crossover card, but with a Godzilla-style lore-friendly name, plausible within MtG's mechanical identity (BG creature with equipment theme? That's a no-no), or just an alternate art of existing card (preferably the one that fits). Also, in a something that thematically fits REALLY well: not even as far as Godzilla and Ikoria was.

As long as NeoKamigawa still had Moonfolk, I'd be pretty much okay with anything.

A fine question. Let’s say we did Return to Kamigawa but things changed massively. If you could pick three things that didn’t change flavorwise, what would those be?

Races, Ninja, Samurai. I just want my culture represented with Theros-like treatment. Original Kami was way too abstract, needs more yokai-inspired reps.
