Breathtaking Nasa footage captures series of cascading solar flares on the surface of the sun

A series of cascading loops on the sun’s surface was captured by Nasa’s Solar Dynamics Observatory.

Active regions of the sun are areas with particularly intense magnetic fields, and cascading loops, also known as coronal loops, are fluxes of charged particles that are often found emanating above them.

According to Nasa, cascading loops are a common phenomenon, but “this one was one of the longest and clearest sequences seen in years.”

Cows, poultry and pigs at the animal supermarket

In an area next to the M5 motorway, farmers from across the south-west of England gather at Sedgemoor Livestock Market. Purpose-built in 2008, sheep, dairy and beef cows, poultry and pigs can be found for sale.

Two regular markets are held on Mondays and Saturdays, with other specialist sales held throughout the week. Photographer Jonathan Browning captured the characters who attend these auctions, documenting the everyday details of this Somerset supermarket.
