What are the chances that Ishida was inspired by the character of Lilith? The fact that she is standing in what looks like red water outside of a white Garden reminds me of the story that Lilith left Eden to live by the Red Sea.
YES. Okay, you guys have to know I’m a big sucker for biblical shit, so Anon I love you for asking me this. I do definitely think Ishida has created Rize with Lilith in mind, especially with the poem he just posted today.
So, to catch anyone up who isn’t familiar with Lilith, she’s described as being the she-demon embodiment of “unclean animals” in Jewish mythology, but there are several stories that introduce her as Adam’s first wife in the Garden of Eden. In the Book of Genesis, the birth of the first humans can be interpreted as God first creating both man and woman out of clay. These two people are Adam and Lilith.
In the Alphabet of Ben Sirah, Lilith immediately refuses to submit to Adam, declaring herself an equal since they were made the same way. She then flees to the Red Sea (notorious as a place of sanctuary), where she remains in spite and feelings of rejection.
Afterwards, God pulls a rib from Adam and creates Eve, who lives only to serve him. Lilith later becomes known for killing children and birthing many ghosts and demons before returning to the Garden as a serpent.
Rize, like Lilith, is an icon for lust and death who escaped lifelong servitude in “The Garden”.
In the bible, “The Agony in the Garden” (Luke 22)– shortly before his trial and crucifixion– Jesus prays so hard his sweat fell like tears of blood.
Lilith, in the form of a serpent, returns to the garden where she tricks Eve into eating the forbidden fruit. She is then said to die by the “seed of Eve”, who crushes her on the day of Judgement. From thereon, God curses them both and dooms the seed of Eve (Furuta) and the seed of Rize (Kaneki) to a rivalry.
