DESERT Temperatures in deserts usually vary a lot between daytime and nighttime. A variation greater than 30 degrees Celsius (86°F) is quite common. This can be explained by the dry air and the lack of clouds. The heat escapes more rapidly in those conditions. Though my car thermometer is not really reliable, I think I experienced my biggest variation in the Kalahari. So hot during the day and almost freezing cold at night. SIIMPLICITY No fuss, no fridge, no fancy gadget, just a swag, this car was purposely build to tackle some of the toughest muddy tracks in the World in Borneo (Kalimantan). Perfectly balanced with a low center of gravity, this Hilux could slide on the mud with the combination of a bash plate, a skid plate and some good set of mud tires. If 280 L of diesel seem much for a Hilux, imagine driving 60-70 hours without seeing a single petrol station. Wondering how Borneo is like? Just watch some old Camel Trophy videos. By the end of the day, you are covered in mud, trying to recover your car once more. Mud outside, mud inside, mud everywhere. Here I was driving and camping in Bromo volcano on my way to Borneo. A bit of cold and misty air before the suffocating humid heat of the jungle. As much as I love Africa, I love Indonesia. Cohabitation. This shot was not taken in a conservancy. This means wildlife and humans have to share the same land. In the dry bed of the rivers, pastoral tribes dig holes to find water for them and their cattle. This is an issue when elephants use them as weather as waterholes and tribesmen defend them. For both of them, it's about survival. Many orphan elephants are the result of this conflict. Conflict of Interest. Maasai leased their land to conservancies; then come at night to pasture on the land they have leased. Their cattle eating the grass that should be reserved for the wildlife herbivores. The pastoral land the Maasai people should use for grazing is very often poorly managed, driving them and their cattle to graze on conservancies. Education and training to manage the pastoral land should be given to avoid conflict of interest. So strong, so powerful yet so gentle, so peaceful and probably so fragile. This is the second largest silverback in Rwanda. There are around 900 mountain gorillas left in the Virunga Mountains. This might be one of the most fascinating and unique encounter with wildlife. Though you have to stay a few meters away, when the gorillas move, you have to stay still and they might pass by very very close. The permit to see gorillas is prohibitive, 750 $ per person in Rwanda but if this is the price to save them, so be it. These gorillas are now worth so much more alive then dead. Wildlife preservation must be profitable to these countries so they "invest" in their wildlife and its preservation. Totally fine by me.
