so many thoughts about agott and physical affection....

-most definitely touch starved. Who knows how physically affectionate Adina was, but even if she was, at Qifrey's atelier, she's always secluding herself away from everyone.

-she YEARNS for the touch but is AFRAID of it all the same. every time agott gets a hug (or flopped on by tetia LMAO) she gets all red and blushy.. but she's never seemed to complain, exactly. she only shoves them off, but (at least i don't think) she complains about the touch itself. she just starts talking about something else.

-i say afraid beCAUSE she starts talking about something else immediately. avoiding it. accpeting that affection means forming a bond, and agott doesn't WANT to. she's afraid to.

-the affection is probably also a bit foreign to her. Qifrey can't show too much affection for.... reasons.... Olruggio's always in his room over the catwalk, rarely showing up. Richeh simply isn't a very touchy person. Tetia is the best thing she's had, yet agott traps herself in her room away from everyone, so until agott HAS to leave her room tetia doesn't get many chances. And Tetia's too kind. she isn't as touchy with her because she knows agott doesn't like it.

-what most definitely doesn't help is Sassaran. She was restrained and trapped, and she couldn't even see who was holding her. I imagine being touched when she can't see you or didn't know you were there is a trigger, or at least very startling. (DAMN YOU SASSARAN GGRGRGRRGRGGRRRRGGR)

-Coco. Coco coco coco. Now, Agott can't really seclude herself away. she's her roomate now, and we all know how coco loves giving hugs. This foreign affection agott can't avoid anymore. this warm ball of pure sunlight who is insistent on becoming her friend by any means.

vaguely-concerned

the sweetest thing about this page to me is that coco does understand exactly what agott is trying to say, and her fondness for her when she just stumbles to a stop before she quite gets there is so palpable. the way she manages to communicate that she needs a bit more comfort and contact but in the most amused, affectionate way that doesn't register with agott (nr. 1 'oh I fucked it all up :(' believer on the peninsula) as admonishment for her having gotten something wrong or made a mistake... and then they go off and have one of THE softest most healing conversations in this whole manga

(Manga spoilers!) Theres something about baby Agott growing up in a society where while gender roles are much more relaxed, are still there. Especially as shes essentially considered nobility, she's expected to be ladylike and all the stereotypical concepts that come from it.

And you can see that shine at her young age when she (traditionally enough) has long hair

And yet despite her childhood growing up in a society like that, we don't see a 'ladylike' girl who grew up in high society but rather a short haired child who has a 'masculine' behaviour from the way she sits to how she eats and keeps her belongings

What makes it beautiful is that unlike most stories where the author would have a "masculine" and aggressive girl who would slowly turn 'feminine' over the story because she healed some traumas, Shirahama chooses to go the opposite path, she chooses to let Agott shine past her traumas and stay as she is and enhance her self-expression without having to turn her feminine, and you can see this from the way her hair develops in the manga

To her embracing her love for decorative magic despite witch society and the many ways her family has been implied to make her conform by insulting her use of said decorative magic. It is when she realises that her expression of magic (and in turn, of herself) is accepted and celebrated (From both witch society, the atelier and most specifically Coco) that she truly becomes confident in herself

In a way, you can even argue that her entire storyline and character development can be about the butch experience and slowly finding yourself by becoming vulnerable and embracing your true self-expression (Of course, this applies to any identity but I am relating this to the butch experience). To be butch is not just by dressing up in masculine clothes and looking masculine. To be butch is to stand up against the conformity that an oppressive society imposes on a woman and on queer people, it is to embrace who you are and being true to yourself against all odds and along the way welcoming the people that celebrate you instead of pushing them away.

And even without the storyline for Agott she still has the many traits that come from the butch principles. We watch her go out of her way to protect Coco, risking her life for an outsider and even protecting her own friends such as when Ekoh and Etlan start questioning tetia out of pure chivalry. We see her reject the beliefs the Arklaums imposed on her, we see her reject her envy and instead turn it to motivate her to do something good; we watch her, despite her traumas release her feelings and emotions instead of forcing walls on herself. We see her grow to respect her fellow-apprentices and most especially Coco, and in the events leading up to the Silver Eve arc we watch her take accountability for her actions towards Coco. And above all else, she is starting to find personal joy, liberty and strength in herself and in her surroundings.

I know Agott isnt a canonical butch character, but the way Shirahama has written her, the way her storyline is written in the manga hits so close to home as a butch and I think that sentiment goes for a lot of people regardless of identity

Of all the main characters, I think there's only Olly left to be brimmed haha.

Bsd but there’s dragons. Doesn’t effect the plot by any means. There’s just dragons everywhere. Which makes the dragon head conflict basically equivalent to being named the deer head conflict or the cat head conflict. Also chuuya would still fight a dragon in dead apple it would just be either very basic design wise or a very weird looking dragon to spice things up. I think I’m thinking too hard about this au. I just like dragons 💔
