let me tell you a story. when i was young, i was the āenrichedā kid. i was in two math courses ahead of most of my grade, i read 2 or 3 books a week, and i had straight aās. everything was really quite easy for me, but people still encouraged me and helped me become a learner. and then, around 5th grade, things started getting hard. i went with it. and kept doing all the work and getting aās, but it really did me no good. i would be up late crying because i hadnāt finished my essay yet and i was always stressed about something academic. no one ever said āgood job!ā or āyouāre trying so hard! im proud of you!ā anymore. all i got was āokay, now do it for seven more years and weāre good.ā as if working hard was expected, as if it was effortless, as if it was nothing for me to waste my entire youth sitting in dumb classrooms, as if i just had to accept that my worth would always be measured in numbers. i got no satisfaction out of it, and my personal goals were so unrelated to school that it really meant nothing to me. learning had become something thoughtless, mindless, repetitive. so i just slowly stopped trying. i still give some fucks, for the sake of college and my parents, but only the maximum fucks i can give without being stressed over it. i am never, ever crying over some math worksheet again. i am never working my ass off just to be rewarded with a pretty little certificate again. im going to an art schoolā they barely glance at my gpa. you want me to work hard? give me an incentive. 100 us dollars for every a+ final grade i get, and itās a deal. i am not letting an authoritarian system designed to drain the individuality out of children and turn them into source-analyzing, equation-solving robots define me ever. again.
