Adrian meeting Grace for the first time, hearing how old he is and the fragile state he’s in, and immediately becoming maternal towards this alien. They personally watch over him and make sure he’s getting the best care possible (based on all the information from the earth thinking machine), and constantly has to swat away Eridian press to give him space to rest and heal.

When he’s better, they personally work with him to create the most optimal housing possible. He’s their baby, they’d do and make anything for him 💕

Grace and Rocky (movie) are now orbiting Erid and are docking to the space elevator. Getting ready to meet a whole new planet of possibilities, Grace goes to find Rocky to see what he’s doing. Rocky is waiting at the airlock, wearing something that resembles a sweater. Grace has never seen him wear that.

“You cold or something, Rock?” Grace jokes. Eridians don’t get cold.

“Uhhh, mmmm, Eridians wear clothing like humans. Rocky knew Grace didn’t know, so Rocky wear no clothes on the Hail Mary. Is what you get for making me listen to your internal systems. Gross gross gross.” Eventually, Grace meets other Eridians and they are all wearing clothing.

Grace realizes he’s been living with a naked Eridian for the past decade. (Those overalls Rocky wears in the movie are the equivalent of a human wearing an apron with nothing else on.) He also joked in his head that wearing no clothes was a typical man thing, but Rocky had no gender. Rocky is just a freak.

Makes sense though. If you’re alone for 46(?) years, there’s a point where you just stop caring. Also Rocky totally knows how to say fist bump properly on like, the second or even first time, but it makes Grace annoyed so he keeps saying it wrong. Again, Rocky’s a freak.

Grace showing up to Erid starving, discombobulated, and with every disease known to man is hilarious in a morbid way because I’m just imagine Rocky shows up like “this is my alien friend! He saved my life and we bring back the cure to saving our star! Also, he’s dying and we know little to nothing about his biology to fix it. He saved you all so you better lock in and save his life. Ryland then has to spend a few minutes just curled into a ball having some sort of existential crisis.

Grace: Oh, yeah, humans have this tendency to personify anything, so sometimes kids will draw faces on rocks and give them names. Rocky: Humans see rock with face as person, question? Grace: It's more like play pretend. It's really easy for humans to bond with things and kids will bond with and play with pretty much anything. Rocky: Understand, understand. Does Grace miss humans, question? If Grace draws face on Rocky, would it be like him having another person, question? Grace: Aw, thanks, buddy. I'm okay. I love you the way you are, you know that? Rocky: Good, good. But if Grace ever wish for more humans, Rocky can have face and pretend.

Just sobbing considering the idea of Grace having to explain the concept of ‘failure to thrive’ to the Eridians and that even if they manage every other need, food and air and shelter etc, without physical contact and human socialisation, his body might just give out on him anyway. That it might just shut down anyway.

Grace explaining it to Adrian because he doesn’t want Rocky to blame himself if this doesn’t work and he needs the Eridians to know it wasn’t their fault. If he doesn’t make it, it wasn’t their fault.

I just came up with a really fun idea about Rocky discovering geodes. Like what if on Erid, crystals forming inside of someone is their variant of cancer or a severe sickness.

So basically, really dangerous and probably painful to have sharp crystalline things like that slowly pierce the fleshy soft insides of an Eridian.

Rocky, looking at pictures of geodes on the portable think machine: Grace.

Grace, tinkering with something: Yeah bud?

Rocky; Why earth rocks sick, question?

Grace, stopping: what? Earth rocks aren’t sick.

Rocky: Yes yes yes. Look! Sick rocks. Like Eridian.

And so Grace has to explain the probably horrifying concept of “no those are geodes, that’s natural on earth.” Rocky is horrified, statement.

Thinking about Grace hosting weekly earth culture classes for interested Eridians. Rocky and Adrian are always there (very supportive of their little human). Naturally, the Odyssey is eventually discussed. Grace probably does a dramatic reading, sharing the daring exploits of Odysseus’ on his journey home. Revealing that his wife Penelope waited 20 years for his return. Adrian can only laugh, “Only 20 earth years? Waited 3 times as long as that. 20 years on same planet is easy.” And then Rocky tackles them.

American Cheese is a processed cheese made of Cheddar, Colby, or similar, combined with Sodium citrate. The Sodium citrate keeps the cheese fats from separating during the pasteurization process.

The patent for processing American Cheese was granted in 1916 to James L. Kraft, a Canadian of German descent who had immigrated to the US in 1904. Pasteurizing the cheese prevents it from spoiling, allowing it to be shipped farther and stored longer. It was actually WW1 that gave Kraft (and his company) their big break, as the US government provided cheese (in tins) to the armed forces abroad.

Rocky being fascinated by human's eyesight is kind of canon, but I hope Grace goes really into it with him on the trip to Erid.

Some of our favorite things to draw from a young age are eyes. We evolved to have bigger eye whites so we can better gauge where someone is looking at, to an incredible level of accuracy. We can sense when we're being stared at, be it from another human or not. There are studies that if you stare at someone for long enough, you can develop stronger feelings towards them. The sheer amount of expressions relating to eyes and sight. Eyes are the window to the soul, you're the apple of my eye, a sight for sore eyes, to see eye to eye, to light up someone's eyes. Lack of direct eye contact at the right amount and times can make or break a conversation. To look, to behold, to see, is care, attention, love, devotion.

And Rocky suddenly feels that gap between them grow wider and wider. This is something he will never truly understand, or properly fathom. Grace speaks of it with such poetry, he wants to explain it to Rocky so badly, from what colors are and feel like to what it feels to be seen, to be watched.

Then Grace explains how vision is not enough sometimes. Eyes can judge, accuse, hurt. Eyes can blind you to a deeper truth, concepts like first impressions and how the brain fills in the blind spots in a way that can deceive. How humans often find truth in darkness, away from sight and light. People close their eyes to fully experience music, dance, deep connection, to relish on other senses. The mind adapts and welcomes more sensations when robbed of vision, forsaking that sense for more. To have it is deeply foundational, yet to choose not to is just as important.

‘Adrian who’s jealous-‘ this, ‘Adrian who’s immediately the one who spoils Grace-‘ that, I want Adrian who’s jealous… but of Rocky. Look at that squishy blob sitting in their spouses lap and sighing like he’s got a hard life (Rocky explains contentment sighs to Adrian later, who gets cuteness aggression so intense they put a hole in the ground) and humming all adorably because of how nice Rocky’s claws feel in his soft hair and is too nervous about the human being fragile to tell him that Adrian REALLY wants to pet and cuddle Grace like Rocky does too.

Grace, on the other hand, just waits til Rocky is off in a meeting to take that 20 minute window that is the max amount of time him and Rocky can stand to be away from each other (progress tho, last month it was only 15 minutes) and ask Adrian if they can cuddle and then later on when Rocky and him are alone, ask Rocky what Adrian thought about it.

He is pleased to be told by a very smug Rocky that Adrian was very happy to get human cuddles and wants to know how soft they can pet him since they deserve to pet the human too.

Does anyone ever think about how the only reason the crew were in comas to begin with is that every psych specialist on earth was positive no one could share such cramped quarters together for four years without killing each other or themselves, so the risk of using the brand new technology was lower than the risk of leaving everyone awake?

And then Grace and Rocky managed it WHILE Grace was slowly dying of malnutrition.

Neither of them had any idea if Erid would actually be able to come up with edible food and medical care for Grace. Neither of them knew if he would ever recover. Neither of them knew if he would die from his Every Deficiency Ever before they even arrived. Scurvy and Beriberi both cause severe pain and mental/emotional changes, and those are just the ones he mentioned. But somehow he kept choking down taumeoba for YEARS and stayed sane enough to get them home.
