A lot of innuendo and dirty jokes are really just puns that happen to be vaguely related to sex and I like puns which also makes me a fan of a lot of innuendo and dirty jokes. Which is all well and good but I do worry I occasionally come across as horny and/or flirty when really I'm just nerdy.
Passed a yard sign on the way home which read "defeat socialism communism vote republican" which is pretty run of the mill republican rhetoric and would be fairly unremarkable except it was surround by signs for candidates in upcoming local small Midwest town government and I don't know it just amused me for some reason. Like yeah sure, I'm sure mayor McCornhole in nowhere Ohio will play a critical role in defeating all the "socialism communism" that is so strongly threatening the local corn fields
I still find it hilarious everytime I go back and play Puzzle Star Sweep that it contains what has to be one of the earliest recorded examples of a man completely folding the instant a cute girl gives him a compliment
Having just finished Fleabag there are several things which surprised me about it. The biggest being that I enjoyed it immensely despite it being very much not something I would normally watch. The second is it is slyly, I think unintentionally, one of the most powerfully Christian works I've ever seen. The priest is just such an incredible depiction of real, authentic, messy, imperfect faith as practiced in an imperfect world and I think we desperately need more like it.
I'm totally on board for falling trees being able to harm you in Medieval Dynasty, it's part of the charm of the game but they could have been a little kinder about the damage falling trees which procede to defy the laws of physics deal. Don't get me wrong I'm sure my villagers will forever tell the story of the headman who cut down a tree only for it to vibrate aggressively against the ground for 3 seconds before launching both itself and him several hundred feet into the air. A journey he miraculously survived. Unfortunately he landed, bruised, disoriented, over encumbered by logs and weilding only an axe, next to a bear which promptly ate him. A legend which will surely live for ages but the lost progress is still fairly annoying
I just started rewatching The Mentalist and knowing how things go, I'm fascinated by the contrast in the pacing of Jane and Lisbon in comparison to Rigsby and Vanpelt. Like Jane and Lisbon are a serious slow burn that doesn't get past could plausibly be written off as just really good friends until basically the soft reboot with the FBI. With Rigsby and Vanpelt on the other hand, Jane damn near directly says in the Pilot look I know you guys are gonna get together, you know your going to get together, the audience know you're going to get together, Cho and Lisbon know your going to get together but first Drama and it only progresses from there.
A thing I will never understand is people who disapprove of, and many cases themselves don't seem to understand, silly little jokes. Like there's an attitude out there I've encountered online and in real life that every joke has to be this laugh out loud funniest thing you have ever heard performance or its dumb and bad and not worth saying and I find that baffling and kind of sad. Like I make a lot of jokes most of them I don't really think are all that funny but I do think they are all a little funny and that's fine in fact it's wonderful. There is absolutely nothing wrong with injecting a little levity into most (not all) circumstances and in my opinion a lot to be gained. A joke doesn't have to be hilarious, it doesn't have to shift a mood to uproarious laughter to be good or legitimate. It doesn't even have to make you smile. Sometimes a joke is just a little reminder that most situation aren't really that serious or at least they don't have to be and that humor and joy in some small quantity can be found almost anywhere and almost all the time. I like a silly little joke even the ones that aren't that funny and I don't really understand people who don't

Ironically I think it being a Stargate show was part of its problem. Not it's only or even biggest but part. I just think by the end of SG1 and Atlantis they sorta moved past their own premise. Like earth has space ships and Ftl travel and while yes the statgate is still useful it is no longer like the thing letting us go out and explore. Worse but also inevitably the focus was kinda shifting towards the ships and space battles and space politics and away from using the statgate to explore the galaxy. I think the Destiny was an attempt to go back to hey we are a relatively small group with limited resources or support just going through the Stargate and finding weird things on weird planets.
And then they didn't actually make the show about exploring weird planets and finding weird things... for some reason
Just rewatched Holiday(the body swapping episode) and it remains a tragedy we didn't get more of Michael Shanks as Jack. Maybe it wouldn't hold up as well if it weren't all of two lines and like 12 seconds of screen time but I swear of all the actors playing the wrong part his is the best and tbh RDAs brief Daniel is better then his Tel'c which in fairness is a hard character to play. Christopher Judge's Jack is also fun but I don't know I think Jack and Daniel's dynamic and the way those two played each other could have been so fun

so far the most realistic part of this series is that in the episode "The Nox" (SG-1 s01 e08.), in the cold open, a government official (I'm guessing the secretary of defense, perhaps?) comes to the base to watch a demonstration of the workings of the planet's unique and singular interplanetary wormhole that is capable of transporting not just matter, but living people across lightyears between different human-populated worlds which have not had contact with each other since time immemorial in the matter of seconds.... and then proceeds to complain about how that's a waste of time and government spending because it's not a weapon.
like, my guy, you can literally turn vaguely to the left and have a full conversation in English with the friendly local alien, and you're huffy because the last time they went through that thing, they only brought back a(n I guess silicate-based) life-form capable of creating walking, talking clones of people out of nuclear energy generated by their crystalline bodies? I'm no expert, but even I can think of several people who would be slamming their asses on the corrugated metal flooring out of sheer joy and cumming all over their shorts at such a discovery, and this program basically does something like that every week.
if the story's universe was at all interested in making any amount of sense, the Stargate program would be the single most well-funded research project in human history.
Mild spoiler since it sounds like OP might be watching for the first time but there's a recurring plot through at least the first several seasons of this oh the SGC isn't bringing back weapons and wastes so much money we're going to shut it down. And like aside from all of the above the overwhelmingly powerful counter argument is actually just yeah but like we know there are evil aliens out there with interstellar space ships and energy weapons and a desire to kill and enslave us specifically so like what's plan B if we're giving up on using the statgate to find weapons/allies and the answer is always dunno it'll probably be fine they probably won't even attack us and if they do the power of 'murica will defeat them. A position the stupidity of which is only matched by my horror upon realizing 'politician who has watched independence day one too many times and thinks space ships could be blown up by f-16s and therefore cutting off funding to the find a way to stop the evil alien spaceships program is a reasonable budget cut' is a character I find utterly believable

This sort of thing is why Jack and Sam shipping always catches me a bit off-guard. Don't get me wrong its a good ship, the obviously in love but the show refuses to actually do anything with it thing is like peak ship bait but my experience and love of stargate substantially predates my experience with Fandom and ship culture and so their relationship is kinda permanently filed away in my head as deeply frustrating nothing Burger that is kinda shit actually and everytime I see a Jack and Sam ship post I end up doing a double take of like eww why oh wait no that checks out they're very cute the writers just kinda suck (at least in this one specific way)
You can tell a lot about the health of a civilization by their warning signs. Places with a lot of dumb folks will have very broad, very dumb warnings in public. "No feeding the birds." "Stop swimming in this drainage pond." That kind of thing.
Advanced civilizations have very precise signs. They've covered the bases of their regular, run-of-the-mill idiots, and now they're working hard to cover that other end of the bell curve: the talented idiot. When I was in Germany last time, there was a big warning sign that consisted of a 76-letter-long word that means "stop bothering this particular goose, Sven." I don't know who Sven was, but the goose looked pretty calm. It worked.
Now, I have a secret to tell you. You can just make your own signs. There's no law against it, except perhaps "littering," and the municipal sign factory doesn't have very good security. If you show up there past close and put in the door code that you shoulder-surfed off one of the employees returning from lunch a week prior, you have all night to fuck around with their sign-printing machine, making the most official-looking placards you can think of.
Is this wrong? I don't think so. It's a public space, and being able to put up an aluminum sign that says wacky crank shit is your right. For instance, just last week, I banned pickup trucks from parking by the playground. The cops figured out something was going on, because they didn't get any calls for toddlers getting backed over for a couple of days and sent a patrol truck to investigate. Took my sign right down.
What I discovered after that is that nobody keeps records of what signs are supposed to be there. Why would anyone put up a sign for no reason? They cost money, after all. The city is now suing the shit out of that officer for stealing the "no trucks" sign, thanks to an anonymous tipster who called in the theft. Guy wearing a reflective vest came by and put like four more of them up after the lawsuit made the news, just out of spite. I'm not entirely sure if he's actually a city worker; we ran into each other at 3am at the sign factory and just grunted. He was working on some really crazy signs about not feeding a particular swan. Probably German.
"There's no law against it" followed immediately by so anyway commit a B&E is easily the funniest part of this tomfoolery IMO
i wonder how long i could go without googling anything. as a broad concept, not just google itself. not looking a single thing up on the internet that someone could not have looked up in 1995. no maps no recipes no product lookups or digital store maps. my job requires i be online but how many of the “how to X” or “i’ll just double-check this…” searches i do are really necessary and how many are just convenient or because i’m no longer used to saying “i don’t know”? i’ve been playing a video game and looked up a dozen things instead of just poking around the options and seeing what happens. i look up how long to boil rice in the instant pot every time i haven’t done it in a while in case? idk? the answer has changed? in case my memory is wrong and the cost of failure would be burning a cup of rice?? could i just rely on my human brain and memory and perhaps books i own and a willingness to experiment and explore in the real human world for a week? a weekend? an entire 24 hours?
This made me think of something one of my physics professors in college once told the class there is absolutely no reason to ever intentionally memorize an equation you could easily look up. If you use it often enough you will naturally memorize it and if you don't you probably aren't using it often enough for intentionally memorizing it to be worth the time or mental energy it would take.
There probably is a space of over reliance on various tools whether that be Google or AI or something else but I think it's also easy to look at situations where you could not use those tools and say on no I'm losing my ability to do this manually when in truth you still practice those skills in the situations where they are valuable you just don't necessarily think about it because it happens naturally. I think it was Plato who wrote of earlier Greek philosophers decrying reading and writting as making students stupider by not forcing them to memorize literally everything they knew.
Although I will note when it comes to AI specifically there are substantial other concerns aside from just fear of becoming over reliant and this argument does nothing to address those issues.
