a headcanon/vague fic concept i've had for awhile is that at some point during the end stages of harry and dora's relationship harry started sleeping on the couch or in an easy chair rather than in bed with dora due to fights and coming home late as fuck from work plastered. when she finally left him for good he just continued sleeping on the couch because sleeping in a double bed alone was too painful for him. his pathological avoidance of it comes full circle and it becomes an object of fixation. the Bed of Eternal Loneliness. idk if he ever even got around to propping the mattress up against the wall and disassembling the bedframe. maybe he just let it become another piece of furniture in the room. like half of his wardrobe is bleeding onto his bed and the remaining surface area is covered in paperwork.
i'm not sure whether or not we know what harry's housing situation was after he and dora split (if anyone has sources of canon info on this please send it my way) but most interpretations in fanworks have him still living in the same apartment 6 years on. so when he comes home for the first time after martinaise and has to deal with the ruins of his old life, one of the biggest adversities he must contend with is the Bed of Eternal Loneliness.
i like when people write/talk about kim helping harry clean what is almost certainly a horribly neglected apartment. so in my hypothetical fic kim ends up staying later than he meant to one day by accident, to the point where it's late enough that the buses and trolleys run so infrequently that he'd get back to his apartment in the GRIH area around sunrise. so harry insists he stay the night and offers him the now-clear Bed of Eternal Loneliness to sleep on. normally kim would refuse to take someone else's bed but clearly harry's more comfortable on the couch anyway so he relents. after an uneventful night's sleep kim returns home to his own apartment and to harry's surprise the thrall of The Bed has somehow been broken and it's no longer too painful to look at. For Some Reason. which could honestly really mean anything.
