I think what’s truly, wonderfully insidious about Emet-Selch as a character is that his story is genuinely, heartbreakingly tragic. it’s terrible what he’s lost and what he’s endured and you want to feel sad for him. you want to pity him. but then he reminds you, with no subtlety and no pretense, that he is an absolute and irredeemable monster. he wanted nothing less than the total genocide of every living thing on fourteen worlds and he got halfway there before the WoL came along to stop him. you want to mourn what he lost but there is no tragic history that can excuse what he has done
