i have a lot of feelings and thoughts about coelacanths today
like… they’re blue
you have this mysterious fish that no one really cared about, because everyone assumed they’d gone extinct with the dinosaurs. an interesting footnote, but one of many, many fossil species.
and later the coelacanth gets some fame as a so-called “missing link” species, a theory which is now outdated (and not accurate for coelacanths) but was really influential at the time. because they have some weird biological quirks – bones in fins! – people were like “oh, they must be a missing link.” so the coelacanth was launched into some fame with the theory of evolution. it got brought up a lot. drawn in old textbooks as proof.
and then a fisherman finds a weird fish off the coast of south africa and calls a local fish expert who had let it be known she was interested in weird finds, and he brings her the (unfortunately badly rotted) corpse and she’s like “well, this is sure weird,” and sends off the bones to other experts, who start to quietly freak out, and rush to south africa, and rewards are offered for another one, any other one, and a few years later one is caught and frozen before rotting.
and it’s this incredible discovery, this extinct creature come to life (the prehistoric coelacanth lived in swamps and marshes in south america; these now are deep ocean fish in and around the indian ocean, but it’s still recognizably the same species)!
but it’s also blue.
not like, muddy blue, or tumblr-default-background blue.
proper shimmering sapphire blue and white. almost turquoise in some lights. this like… muddy, fossil creature. always drawn in dinosaur browns and grays. and it’s alive and it’s blue. just imagine being the scientist who opened that crate to this creature for the first time. you’re already excited, you’ve known about this fish for decades, you thought it was a story, you know it’s in this box. you expect to see the weird fins and the strange tail. you know it’s large and odd looking. and you open it up and it’s this beautiful, shining blue, you know?

Day 7 of taking care of a baby dinosaur
Moe likes juice :) that's it that's today's update
*Joined with this is a photo of the little dinosaur wearing heart-shaped sunglasses, with a glass full of juice in front of him. He's probably just nibbling on the straw, but the photo makes it seem like he's actually drinking.*

Day 6 of taking care of a baby dinosaur
I think Moe just needed enrichment. I bought him some cat toys, the ones that can move on their own (since I can't really runs around with him for now). He loves it ! It's nice to see I could get some good use out of that Arima Kinen prize money. It also shows that he does have some predator instinct, despite being able to digest food other than meat. The omnivore theory is definitely proven now !
I still don't know how I'm supposed to announce all my new discoveries to the world though... I can't just say I have a real baby Stenonychosaurus, can I ? At least, not if I want to keep Moe. Giving him away to a research institute could greatly improve the quality of the collected data, but I like Moe and I want him to stay with me... Not that it's my choice to make anyway, this is Curren's dinosaur, not mine !
Day 5 of taking care of a baby dinosaur
Today was a productive day ! I got a ton of interesting data about Stenonychosaurus speed, stamina, running technique, etc. It's so interesting, I can't wait to see how Moe's running evolve as he grows up ! But for now, he should get some well-deserved rest. He even got a few potato chips as a treat, since he's been such a good boy !
On an unrelated note, I noticed he started eating bugs recently. As much as I love to see him hunt (it's fascinating, I got tons of videos !), it hurts me to think I have been feeding him so badly that he needs to resort to eating insects. Or maybe it's just an old instinct that pushes him to do this ? Either way, I tried giving him shrimp (aren't they big sea bugs ?), but he didn't seem that interested. Still, I'll try adding more meat to his meals now. He's still growing, he needs his protein !
Day 4 of taking care of a baby dinosaur
Weirdly enough, Moe seems to really like potatoes. I gave him some unseasoned boiled potatoes and he ate all of it, he even asked for more (at least I think that's what he was trying to say). I tried giving him some fish as well, but he didn't appriciate it as much. His favorite food is still potato chips though... Everytime Croix comes by, Moe follows her around. I wonder if she hasn't been feeding him behind my back...
So that gave me an idea. Since Moe follows Croix, what if we could find a way to have him run after her ? That way, I could get a good idea of his top speed, as well as videos of him running. And Croix could get some good training, it's a win-win situation ! Now I just need to find a way to convince her to go along with my plan...
Day 3 of taking care of a baby dinosaur
We went to the beach today ! Moe loved it, he was very intrigued by the waves. Of course, I didn't let him go in the deep water, but I allowed him to dip his toes. He also liked digging in the sand. I hid some toys so he could look for them, and he immediately understood the assignment. He's so smart ! I wonder if I could teach him how to use those speaking buttons that some dogs have...
As for today's food, I looked into what iguanas eat (since they share a similar jaw with Stenonychosaurus, they must have a similar diet) and ordered some iguana food online (I hope this isn't a scam...). In the meantime, I gave him some rice since they said there is some in that iguana food, and let him eat some of the plants we found on our walk. If he eats it by himself it must be good for him, right ?
Day 2 of taking care of a baby dinosaur
Summer camp started ! Moe handled the bus ride surprisngly well, probably because he already experienced travelling in a time machine. I brought a harness and a leash with me so I can walk him around Shizuoka safely. He's very curious and often stops to sniff or nibble all kinds of things (so cute !). People seem very intrigued by him, who wouldn't be ? Some even asked to pet him, but I refused for security reasons and not at all because I'm worried he could get attached to other people than me.
Speaking of which: he seems to appriciate Croix du Nord, a bit too much for my liking. The only possible explanation is that he understood the potato chips were hers (thanks to his sense of smell ? Or is he smart enough to undertand that what is under her bed belongs to her ?). Anyway, he digested those pretty well, but I still wouldn't want to give him anything too salty today. I gave him cat wet food, I think he liked it but I need to find something more appriopriate for an omnivore.

Day 1 of taking care of a baby dinosaur
This thing is so cute I can't focus-
So I have been tasked (by myself) to take care of Moe, a baby Stenonychosaurus. Of course, the first thing I did with him was try to take some mesurements but as it turns out, mesuring the size of a living animal is a lot harder than expected. I'm used to immobile fossils, not baby dinos moving all the time ! I feel like I'm getting better at handling him though, he doesn't bite my fingers as much as he did when I started my experiments. I took a lot of photos as well, and took notes of everything on his body that wasn't preserved through fossils.
I wonder what kind of food I should give him. The diet of Stenonychosaurus is still debated among expert, although most of them say that they were omnivores. I'll go to a pet store and see if they have any food that could be appriopriate for him (I should also buy a transport cage for the ride to summer camp). In the meantime, he found some snacks under my roommate's bed (I knew she was cheating on her diet !) and ate them before I could stop him. I wonder how a dinosaur's digestive system will handle potato chips... I guess we'll find out soon !

That's not mine. This one is a dragon, not a dinosaur. And Moe is very well behaved, he always stays with me !
Honestly Tazuna its better that we let her take the dinosaur with her.
Better that than have to deal with an unaccompanied dinosaur hunting the juniors through the corridors while the majority of staff are away.
Thats my security assessment. Plus I think i have a Beastcatcher that should be able to handle it if it goes on a rampage at the beach.

I suppose you are right... it's good that you have precautions in place, just in case. Due to those, and the... frankly shocking fact that he hasn't hurt anyone yet, I'll trust your report.

*The small beast sniffs her fingers and bumps her paulm with his snout. Mai chuckles. This thing is even cuter than she imagined ! And he seems nice too, he isn't even trying to snap her fingers (not that Mai would mind losing one or two to a BABY DINOSAUR).*
Alright, I can't really hold you... Can you follow me ? Come on Moe, come with me ! Yes, good boy !
*Mai leads the dinosaur to her room. She throws her pillows and blanket on the floor so Moe could have a comfortable place to sleep.*

He's a dinosaur. And it's complicated. Short version is that a Curren Chan got transported to the past where she found this adorable little guy and now she left because of some demon girl and Vine Blossom went after her so I'm the only one left to take care of Moe.
Since I know a lot about dinosaurs, I'm probably the best candidate to do it. If we give him to scientists, they could try to dissect him or hurt him for their experiment ! So you understand, I have to keep him with me.
Can I take him to summer camp ? Please ?
Sorry, I was just dealing with a dragon incident.
...unfortunately, I would have to assume that a dinosaur is... quite the dangerous pet. They haven't had millenia of being gradually tamed as a species, so I don't exactly feel good about letting him be in just the attendance of a student.
What member of staff would be willing to ensure a dinosaur is safe? ...I'm not sure. But... if you find a member of staff who's willing, then the two of you can... keep the dinosaur at summer camp, while I try to figure out how to legally register that we have an ancient animal now.
But he's so small ! He wouldn't hurt anyone ! Or maybe he would, but only to defend himself. And he would only defend himself if he feels in danger. And he could feel in danger if the people around him are intimidating. I'm not intimidating, so if it's only me he should feel safe ! Which means he won't hurt anyone if I'm the one taking care of him.
He doesn't know what an umamusume is, any number of things could be "intimidating". Including you. I'd still need someone else to watch over you two in case something happens, for your safety.
He knows what an uma is, he's been traveling with Curren and Vine Blossom ! And he didn't attack me when I brought him to my room earlier. I can assure you he's completely safe to be around !
How those two and you are still unharmed, I have... no idea.
