― Don’t Laugh at My Romance (2007) “I’m realizing that there are things in life that I have no power over.”
When something bothered me, I didn’t talk with anyone about it. I thought it over all by myself, came to a conclusion, and took action alone. Not that I really felt lonely. I thought that’s just the way things are. Human beings, in the final analysis, have to survive on their own.
Haruki Murakami, Sputnik Sweetheart (via wordsnquotes)
elija was quite taken aback by the female’s attitude. she first wanted to apologize - it was not her intention to startle the female after all - but as the other kept on speaking, elija couldn’t help but feel a certain feeling of anger and annoyance bubble up inside of her. “are you usually this rude to people who actually take the time to listen to your music?” it was not how she usually acted, she was known as polite and nice. a really well raised girl. but something about this girl just hit a nerve with her. “well to be able to check your sns, maybe you could give me the name of your group. if that.. isn’t too much to ask for.” an almost overly friendly smile curled up on her lips and her brows raised in an expecting manner as she waited to be told the name of that group.
honestly, after the way she was treated she didn’t exactly feel like coming to any of their gigs ever again - but could she really ignore and forget about the beautiful songs she had just heard just because one of the members was.. well, sort of a bitch? “you won’t get far with an attitude like that, honestly. and i’m not saying this to start a fight. it’s supposed to be.. i guess you could call it, advice from someone who actually wants you and your group to someday maybe succeed.”
the more sensible part of riko knew that both the criticism and advice from the stranger were warranted, she’d been unnecessarily rude and that could very well affect the band’s career---especially in their society which relied so heavily on fan support and the ability to keep it. but the other side of her, the side that was bratty and irrational and prideful and currently angry didn’t take too well to anyone, especially someone she hardly knew, telling her what to do with her band. she cocked a brow, in a way that cockily screamed “are you kidding me”. her snarl remained, now seeming more malicious than it’d previously looked. “um, don’t tell me what i will and won’t get far with, i never asked for your advice and frankly, i don’t need it.”
she wanted to go further, to let her mischievous tongue run wild but then the reasonable side got the better of her, what was the point of her standing her and raining hateful, unnecessary words on someone who only wanted to see the group succeed? someone who’d paid attention to them, especially on this night when no one really took notice of them or the hard work they’d poured into their performance. riko sighed, raking a hand through her hair to remove it from her face and forced on something of an apologetic smile. “but, sorry. i shouldn’t have been so harsh and shouldn’t have pounced on you like that. thank you for taking interest in our band, the rest of my members are busy so we can’t make a proper introduction right now but we’re mush&co.” she tilted her head downward in a halfhearted bow at the end of her introduction

⚾ The chirping of birds rang through the sky in the midst of dawn, alarms alerted the participants of the early rush hour, and melodious vocals greeted him in the morning. A voice so soothing yet so mysterious in itself made it worth getting up; it provided justification for waking up before even the sun could reign high above the earth. It could’ve been only a few days, a week, or even a month that the songs had been playing, but he didn’t know. All that was fact was his liking or admiration for the unidentifiable voice. It became such a frequent audible that he expected to hear it every morning. He purposely left his window open when he slept just for it to reach him at a higher volume. What he knew for sure was that it came from right next door. Who was the owner of that voice?·
He had no time to solve the mystery for he had his own priorities to take care of. The male didn’t just wake up so early for no reason. Across the apartment he resided was where the work took place. The diamond, he called it. Baseball was Lucas’ passion. What was once an activity of leisure became an occupation. His job was to swing a bat and to catch a ball, tasks that he grew accustomed to at a young age. Life couldn’t get any better than that, in his eyes. Life was fortunate, good for him·– all the strenuous times of adversity had led up to this, but that didn’t mean it was time to quit. Not one bit. He trained like life depended on it, as if he hadn’t made any progress from when he was a child. While I’m sleeping, someone else could be up practicing. That was his own way of thinking and reasoning, his motivation for doing what he did. Was it logical? Not really, but it made sense to him and that was all that mattered. He continuously swung the bat until his repetitions were in the thousands, until every inch of movement of his body were all ingrained into muscle memory. He pitched the baseball until his arm ached and sprinted the bases until his legs gave out. Only then would he take a break, but it was short lived. Those who saw him would consider him a mad man, but that was the thing; no one else was crazy enough to be awake at such a time to be a witness. At least to his knowledge.·
Once life came to fruition through the commotions made on the streets, Lucas let the metal be heard. The sound that was produced from the contact of the ball and bat was as harmonious as that voice of interest. He swung, the clinging sound echoed, and the ball flew into the heavens and descended back to earth after seconds of flight. He kept going until his arms felt as though they had popped out of its sockets or the neighbors came to inform him of a shattered window (which had never happened, so far).·
Only one ball left and it was going to be off to the races in his journey to retrieve the others that laid hidden. He tossed it up with his right, clutched his bat with his left and right in a split moment, and hit the ball against the grain. It was a poor swing, the velocity wasn’t there. He watched the ball travel deep into the skies and land right against a female’s head. Shit. This was either a happening of great coincidence or the results of his nonexistent luck. It was a combination of both, more or less, but that still didn’t erase what just transpired. Lucas forced his aching legs to run to the girl with great concern. He knew what it felt like to get hit with a baseball– which made getting hit with a basketball or soccer ball equivalent to a pinch of the arm, but never had he gotten struck on the head. He didn’t know what to expect. A giant lump right in the middle of her forehead had already grew. It wasn’t pretty, but at least she wasn’t unconscious, or dead.·
“Oh man, I’m so sorry! Are you okay? I didn’t mean to hit you!” He knelt down beside her (who was now down on the ground giving shrieks of pain) and offered a hand to help the stranger up.·
she was cursed, that just had to be it. it was the only explanation riko could find for her series of misfortunes just that morning alone. she’d gotten up early, 5:25am-early, all to sort through the new song aki had written and string it all together. that had been the only considerably smooth part of the day, when it came time for breakfast she’d found that the grocery items she’d only recently purchased were rotted and her bank account was far too low for her to grab even a cheap meal at her local convenience store, she’d ended up opting for a glass of tangy orange juice since it was her only option. then when it came time for a shower she found that the water was running cold and had no other choice but to stand through a terrifying cold shower, she’d thought the shower was the end of it all but....the universe seemed to think otherwise. somehow the majority of her clothes had shrunk---she chucked it up to a mishap with the dryer and not any considerable weight gain---and her favorite pairs of shoes decided to lose its sole. riko had gotten dressed with an understandably unhappy disposition, throwing on whatever would fit ended up leaving her a little ridiculous looking, she didn’t bother with makeup or anything of the sort because she figured that, with her luck today, everything would go wrong in that department. she’d thought the worst was over once she stepped out the door of her apartment, only for her to find a note taped to the door from her ever-so-unpleasant landlord that the rent was due!
riko was still mulling over her rent and her lack of funds and where she was gonna find the money to pay the rent so soon when, lo and behold, a baseball decided to greet her forehead with the painfullest of thwacks. the impact was enough to knock her off her feet, elicit sounds of pain from her, and make her wonder what she could have done in a past or this present life to lead to so much misfortune. her pondering turned to anger when she heard a voice besides her, the voice was currently apologizing but all riko heard was someone giving her a chance to express her angle, something she enjoyed doing a little too much. slowly, but surely, she got to her feet, curiously feeling her forehead for any signs of injury and mourning her appearance when her fingers came in contact with the giant lump.
her eyes began slits in her head as she fixed her sights on the other, tongue ready to unleash a lashing.
“what kind of person are you?” she began, voice low but filled with obvious malice. “do you think it’s okay to go around, at this time of the morning, injuring people? what will you do, huh? what will you do if i suffer some permanent injury cause of this!?” she pointed to the unsightly lump on her forehead, voice rising just an octave as she did so. and then an idea occurred to her, this could be a quick way to get some money! possibly not enough money that she would be able to pay off her rent, but maybe enough to keep her landlord off her tale for a couple weeks. “ah, i’m feeling a bit dizzy actually...” her voice wavered purposely to add to the effect, wobbling slightly so it looked believable. “i think i need to go to the hospital...and maybe even call the police, ah i might even have to file charges.”

후회하지 마라: Don’t have regrets: 좋았다면 추억이고, If it was good, it was a memory, 나빴다면 경험이다 If it was bad, it was an experience
it was the same awful procedure every single sunday - while other people her age would get to sleep in, maybe even sleep off their hangover - elija had to be wide awake by 7am in order to get ready for church. perks of being the priest’s daughter, huh? either way, as soon as that was over she - as ever so often - decided to stroll through the city, which really wasn’t all that busy on sundays compared to the other six days of the week. it was nice. real pleasant and peaceful even. except for a few people listening to street musicians or older couples sitting by the cafés there wasn’t much to see.
but on this particular day, a certain group of musicians caught her eye - or rather, her ear. with quick steps she closed in on them until she could see and hear clearly. she was captivated by the beautiful play of vocals and instrumental and before she knew it their performance was over. too short. their performance was too short and elija wanted more. a frown drew itself onto her features and once all other listeners left she gathered all her inner strength and stepped closer to one of the members. “hey.. uh.” she cleared her throat. how awkward. “you guys are really amazing. i was wondering.. if you do this on the regular too.. and if so, where and when.. if you don’t mind me asking.”
it was a short set. originally it wasn’t supposed to be, they should have played longer; all night even. but fate didn’t have the same idea as them, the crowd paid less attention than usual on this particular day and their drummer kept insisting that he was too hungry to keep playing, despite the large bowl of black noodles he’d gulped down just a mere hour ago. riko had to fight to keep her annoyance with it all under wraps, she hated having to cut performances short, hated when the passersby gave no attention to the songs they’d all worked so hard on, and hated when a fellow band member didn’t put in as much as she put in.
so with all of this bubbling within her surface it didn’t have to take much for her to snap at someone, even someone who was both complimenting the band and simply asking for event dates. riko met the girl with the most uninspired of looks, a snarl fixed in place of a smile. “do you usually jump at people like this? without giving them a chance to breathe or even clear their set?” she scrunched her nose up, like the way people usually do when a rotten smell tainted the air. “god. anyways, we don’t have specific or set locations to perform at most of the time, we kinda just float around. unless we’re booked some place and when we are we let whoever’s interested know on SNS.” her tone was casual and matter-of-factly, like a teacher explaining the most basic of concepts to the less than smart child in class.
riko had been experiencing a lot more silence than usual lately, mainly because aki was currently in japan visiting family members and riko didn’t really feel the need to hang around anyone else without aki along. so for the last couple weeks it’d just been her and herself. there was music also, she’s charted out a few songs that she was sure were too badly composed to present to the rest of the band, watched a couple movies that she would deny any knowledge of later on, and even sat through one of those dramas that she’d usually consider too obnoxious. it’d all made her realize that she wasn’t too sure how to cope without her bestfriend, that maybe she didn’t exactly like coping without her bestfriend. she was more melodramatic than usual because she didn’t have anyone to angst with over the dumbest of things, riko didn’t have aki to give her song writing advice like she usually did or listen to riko when she played so that she’d be able to correct any skewered notes, and that’s why everything riko did in the last couple weeks came out a disaster. at this point she truly just longed for her bestfriend so she could shed her false shell of hardness and transform into the overly emotional sap she could only be with aki, she needed to listen to sad songs and watch sad movies while gushing over what sad boy was the dreamiest, something that was a tradition of theirs. really, she just needed her best friend.
I don’t think you’re a liar. I can tell by listening to your music. When I first heard your hum, it sounded like a scream to me. And that made me think… I need to protect you. That’s why, to me, you’re more honest than any other person.
there’d always been something fascinating to her about tables like this, round wooded tables where you could still see the rings in the center. anytime she came across one riko would always make sure to trace each circle, wearing an absented minded smile while her mind went off in circles of it’s own; to her there was something a little whimsical about these kinds of tables. reminds her of little surprisingly cozy cafes hidden in dingy alleyways, the types she’d visit only in the winter. and then the cafes in the winter would remind her of winter itself, of christmas and warm fires and hot drinks that would sometimes be overly sweetened and sweaters that’d itch but keep her warm.
a sense of home, of comfort, that’s what these tables would always remind her of.
